Monster Cable

Our take on the Monster® iCarPlay® Wireless 300

by Ralph Graves

The Monster iCarPlay Wireless 300 transmitter lets you easily enjoy music from your iPod or iPhone through your car's stereo system. The iCarPlay's compact transmitter plugs into the docking terminal of your player, and sends out a low-powered FM signal. Just tune your radio and the transmitter to an unused frequency and you're done.

And because this system is wireless, you can leave the iCarPlay connected to your player as you move through your day. Your iPod powers the transmitter — no batteries necessary. You can even sync and charge your player without detaching the Wireless 300 — just use the provided USB cable to connect to your computer.

Highlights:

  • for all docking iPods, including 160GB iPod classic, 3rd generation iPod touch, and 5th generation iPod nano
  • compatible with iPhone and iPhone 3G
  • tunable across full FM spectrum
  • sync and charge player through transmitter
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

    Worst Purchase ever

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I would rate the Monster® iCarPlay® Wireless 300 product a 0 if I could. This product works about 1/3 of the time. When it does work there is plenty of static. I have tried it with and without the link cord. This product is very disappointing. I am returning it, if possible.

    Just didn't work for me

Written By Tano, Staten Island NY on Tuesday, June 14, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had high hopes for this little unit, but the signal it puts out just isn't strong enough to overpower the local stations. I went with the pre sets and for the first few minutes I thought I had a winner, but static would quickly overcome the unit. No matter what location I tried it just couldn't hold the setting. Now I do live in NY where there are a lot of radio stations so that may be part of the reason for the inabaility to locate a truly free channel. But at this point I have kind of wasted money that I could have put towards a dedicated unit for my cars radio.

    Limited Frequency Range

Written By Tom, Pleasanton, CA on Wednesday, March 23, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like Monster products, as a musician I've used their cables and stuff but this
was a little disappointing. The problem is that it only goes down to 88.1 but
that frequency has static to it and I need to go down to 87.9 (like my old one did,
a different brand). I can't honestly rate this because the reception on 88.1
sucks. Who knows? it might work just fine on a clear frequency.

Since I took it out of the package I'm not sure I can return it but will if possible.

This product does not work in San Diego. I only got static with the iPod barely audible. I do not recommend it.

    Monster® iCarPlay® Wireless 300

Written By Mally, AL on Sunday, March 13, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product actually worked pretty well. I was a bit skeptical at other reviews I
had read, but as long as you choose the right frequency, there's no problems.
You do, however, have to keep the item close to the radio, otherwise it won't
pick up the frequency. As long as you choose a good frequency and keep the
item near the radio, it works perfectly.

    Monster® iCarPlay® Wireless 300

Written By JonE, Chesapeake, VA on Sunday, February 20, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Read the other reviews and hoped this type of adapter would work. It did not. The reception was poor at best. When I held the ipod my body acted as an antenna and the reception was just OK. When I put the ipod down reception was terrible. I attempted to use the usb cable as an antenna; the reception was better but not good enough to keep. I have returned the item and will purchase a hardwired adapter. Crutchfield handled my return professionally and in short order.

    It works.

Written By R81949D, Alexandria, VA on Monday, February 14, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a stupendous Focal Audio System in my sports car that I can plug my iPod
into. But my regular driver, the Subaru Outback, just has the factory install
(albeit with theoptional subwoofer under the driver's seat). I just plug that
Monster iCarPlay into my iPod, set it in the pocket above the radio, tune the
radio to 88.1 and 'viola' - I have all my tunes.

The only time it seems to have some trouble is when I find myself under really
heavy duty high power lines. But my normal radio and XM don't work well in
    those circumstances either.

This is an easy to use and neat product. I've heard others say this kind of
unit doesn't work. Perhaps they just didn't get a Monster! Highly recommended.

    Very Disappoining

Written By Bee Jay, Delray Beach, FL on Thursday, February 10, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having used cheap, imported wireless transmitters in the past, I thought i would try a quality
name brand product. However, I found this to work no better than the cheap ones. It
constantly gets static and cuts out. It's pretty much useless unless you can put up with that.
Unfortunately, after many attempts to improve its reception, I've pretty much cast it aside and
    just listen to the radio.

    Forget burning CDs

Written By Aimee, Tennessee on Tuesday, January 18, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you have an IPOD addicted teen and a vintage (10 year old) car like i do, this is an
excellent product if you want to avoid burning CDs of IPOD playlists. Great value, easy
easy to figure out and install on ipod. Only con is device has to be close to radio...we
have actually thought of velcro'ing it up directly by the car stereo...it seems to get
interference (even on all 3 preset channels), especially if in an urban area. so, as long
as teen/ipod/device is in front seat (unless you velcro) you will enjoy clean sound and no
more homemade CDs of playlists! Would give it 5 stars but until she can get in the back
    seat with it...am holding out...

    Works Great

Written By Jesse, New York on Sunday, September 27, 2009

Works great, but its just like all of the other fm transmitters available. it
has good sound but somtimes has a little bit of static. its nice to be able to
bring my ipod and play it through any radio around house or any car im in.
The screen is a mirror also which is nice but it can be dangerous if the sun
hits it wrong while driving. This fm transmitter is tiny which is great
because i can put it into my pocket when i need to. fits on my 30gb ipod
video and gen 2 ipod touch without a problem. setting your stations is very
    simple also.
