Sound Ordnance

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Sound Ordnance™ M-4075

by Buck Pomerantz

Win the battle for great sound in your ride. Sound Ordnance amplifiers feature tough construction, rugged looks, and a 3-year warranty, so you can enjoy the full power of your music for the long haul. Even better, you can add Sound Ordnance to your arsenal at a surprisingly affordable price.

The Sound Ordnance M-4075 4-channel amplifier deploys 75 watts RMS to each channel, giving your music plenty of firepower. You can also bridge the amp to 2-channel mode to mobilize a pair of subs with 240 watts RMS each, or send 240 watts to a sub while the front channels run your full-range speakers. An adjustable high-pass filter makes sure your full-range speakers operate within their optimum range and give you the best tone possible. If you're driving a sub, the low-pass filter and selectable bass boost allow you to control your bass barrage at will.

The M-4075 amplifier uses sophisticated power supply and output technologies to ensure clean amplification from its inputs all the way to your speakers. Special circuits protect the amp against overheating and short circuits, while a turn-on delay virtually eliminates that annoying thump when you turn your system on.

Highlights:

Power Ratings: The Sound Ordnance M-4075 is a 4-channel Class AB amplifier with an RMS power rating of 75 watts per channel into 4 ohms, and 120 watts per channel into 2 ohms. The amp can also be bridged into a 4-ohm load for a power rating of 240 watts (x 2). Power ratings are measured with an input power of 14.4 volts.

Crossovers: The M-4075 is equipped with both high-pass and low-pass crossovers. The front channels (channels 1 and 2) and the rear channels (channels 3 and 4) have separate crossovers. You can set the low-pass cutoff frequency between 50Hz and 250Hz, and the high-pass cutoff frequency between 80Hz and 2 kHz. Separate switches let you select low-pass, high-pass, or full range operation for the rear channels, and high-pass or full range for the front channels. The crossovers have a 12dB per octave slope.

Bass Boost: The amplifier has a bass boost switch, labeled Super Bass, to give small subwoofers more volume in the low frequencies. You can select the amount of boost with the 3-way switch: 0dB, 6dB, or 12dB. The Super Bass feature is available for the rear channels only.

LED Indicators: The M-4075 features two LED indicators: a green LED that illuminates when the amp is powered on, and a red LED that illuminates when the amplifier is in protect mode due to overheating or a short circuit in the speaker wire.

Connections

Removable End Caps: The end caps on the M-4075 are removable with a 3mm Allen wrench (not supplied) to make it easier to attach the power and speaker wires.

Power Connections: The power and ground connections are set screw terminals that will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. (An 8-gauge amplifier wiring kit is recommended.) The remote turn-on terminal is a set screw terminal that will also accept up to 8-gauge wire. A Phillips-head screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

Speaker Connections: The speaker connections are set screw terminals that will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. A Phillips-head screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

RCA Inputs and Outputs: The amplifier features two pairs of stereo RCA inputs for connecting your head unit--one pair for the front channels and one pair for the rear channels. If your head unit only has one pair of preamp outputs, you can feed all four amplifier channels by connecting optional Y-adapters. (You will lose front-to-back fader capability if you connect the amplifier using Y-adapters.) There is also a pair of stereo RCA outputs for feeding the preamp signal to another amplifier, if needed.

Fuses: The M-4075 features two 30-amp ATC blade fuses.

Great product

Written By Mike, Live Oak, Texas on Thursday, June 06, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The amp was recommended by a friend and it couldn't have been better for my application. I replaced factory speakers and added this amp. Car sounds great w/o the overwhelming boom that subs add. Just looking for better sound, not rattling everything I own. Still messing around with fine tuning the amp, but was happy even before adjustments. Install was easier than expected even for a novice like me. Amp looks good, but is rather large, so keep that in mind. Imo it's a small price to pay for what it gives you.
Pros:
Quality look/sound Versatility Ease of use
Cons:
Size, if anything

plenty of clean power!

Written By Tom P., Folsom Ca on Tuesday, June 04, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Lots of clean power for a great price. At less than half the gain this amp cranked my G35 and really woke my Bose speakers. I switched to a 12" alpine sub and some kicker 6 3/4 speakers in the front doors (all from Crutchfield) and WOW! This 4 channel amp has more than enough power for this system using its 2x 75watts for soundstage front speakesr and 270 watts bridged for a mono sub in the trunk. It is insane loud and clean...no hum or distortion. The amp also runs nice and cool even when I push it. Performance is a 5+ but because of the case I have to give it a 4. The box design is a bit odd as others have posted. Its big; the vents r on the bottom so you have to elevate or mount upside down; the ends have an overhang ledge which interferes with the wire connections esp. in tight hookup locations; and wires connects and controls are intermixed on opposite ends making it a bit challenging to hookup and adjust. But I consider these minor given the price and performance
Pros:
Lots of clean, cool, power. Price. Easy install if you have the space. looks cool
Cons:
Minor but, big and somewhat odd case design (vents and end plate overhang)

Awesome

The amp works great!! I was using a Sony xplod amp for my subs and I thought that was good until I put this amp in. It definitely puts off a lot of power and it still sounds clear and crisp. I love the amp I would definitely buy again!
Pros:
Sounds great, not to big, looks good

Great Amp for the Money

Written By RyanJ, Albuquerque, NM on Saturday, March 16, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first mobile audio amp. I picked it for the power, price, and warranty. The amp provides plenty of power to my front components and a 10" sub. This amp has plenty of features for the beginner car audio enthusiast. The body of the amp itself is stiff but the cover feels flimsy. The screw holes for mounting the amp weren't aligned very well and I couldn't get a drill bit into one of the holes. The amp is indeed huge but still fit perfectly behind rear seats of my double cab Tacoma. All in all, a great amp for the money.
Pros:
Price, power, adjustablility
Cons:
Size, fit and finish

excellent but some design changes are needed

Written By chris, Virginia Beach, VA on Sunday, March 10, 2013

its a good up and sounds excellent but some slight changes are needed. i think its weird to have the vents to the amp on the bottom for cooling. if it is mounted to the floor it wont vent at all. it has to be elevated for it to vent properly. would be easily fixed if the vents were on the top or had a built in fan. a problem that the designers sound not of missed. the vents sound always be on the top. anyways still a solid. would by again if design changes are made.
Pros:
quality amp for price. exllecent sound
Cons:
needs to be redesigned

Good amp over all
Pros:
Plenty of power. Great quality. Very pleased. I would highly recommend to anyone unless space is a concern or your going for comp.
Cons:
Power and ground terminals dont support very large wires. And the angle of the terminals could be a hindrance. hex key screws would be better i picked up some from the hardware store.

great amp for the price

Written By jeff, texas on Friday, December 07, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

this amp is as good as any CEA compliant amp that i have ever owned. its pretty big, so check the specs. the plastic end caps are pretty heavy duty but don't over tighten when you mount them. some reviews complained about them being plastic but metal end caps would conduct electricity.(bad). i noticed a slight hiss between songs, but not bad. also a little engine noise, but not bad either. stays cool too.
Pros:
value warranty quality customer support tons of power

Fantastic amp here! It is a little on the big side but thats fine for me. Using it to drive 2 kicker 6x9's and a 12 inch sub. So far it has done a great job and never had a thermal shutdown, and i am maxing this thing out!
Pros:
Looks great! Works as expected

Great amp. Excellent clean sound and doesn't distort at all. Also doesn't get very hot and looks pretty neato.
Pros:
Sound quality, stays cool, sharp looking, good power, filters are handy, easy as pie installation
Cons:
Big. But that probably contributes to it staying cool without fans

Awesome Amp!

Written By ed, Janesville, WI on Wednesday, July 18, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used this amp as a replacement for my tried and trusted Rockford Fosgate 600a4 that I've had for over 10 years and has served me well. Both amps match out to same specs, 75x4 rms. But WOW, what a difference! I was considering replacing my polk audio 6x9s and my jl 5 1/4. This amp breathed new life into the speakers. I did'nt know amps could "wear out" without failure but this amp proves it to me. I knew the fosgate was at the end of its life cause it would overheat and go into thermal shut down. but I had no idea how much a fresh amp would help the system. My only regret is I spent a lot more money on my sub amp and should have bought a Sound Ordnance.
Pros:
great sound. Easy layout of crossovers.
Cons:
watch the ground and power. On the bottom of the ground it actually says "Power input" I hooked my ground up to that terminal and the ground up to the power and blew the fuses. It actually says ground and positive above the terminals but you must look at it strait on, hard to do when mounting on sub box already in trunk. not a fault of the amp, just be careful.

Great Power- Small Price

Written By Black, Hartford, CT on Sunday, June 17, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this amp to replace my aging (and fried) Alpine v-12 amplifier. I was in the market for something under 200.00 and with more power than the alpine's 45 W rms. My car audio needs have changed and I didn't want to pony up 400 bucks for a new amp.

I run the amp in the 3 channel mode, Rear bridged to 240 W rms to run a single sub, fronts powering MB quart 6.5" separates.

I installed it using the existing wiring from the Alpine. I had pretty low expectations to be honest, i haven't purchased an entry-level amplifier in 10 years, and was expecting to be dissapointed.

The amp performs Very well- the extra power really woke up the Separates and the Sub-woofer. EQ's were easy to adjust using a 100hz test tone, and gains were set about midway. At higher volumes the amplifier really pushes the speakers hard with no distortion.

One problem I am chasing- Noise. It was not present with the alpine, but it is definitely there with the Sound Ordinance. There is a hiss with no signal, and now- engine whine. Also, there is a soft turn on thump that was not present with the higher priced amplifier.

I'll chase the noise, probably re-do some grounds, but the noise is what kept this from a 5 star review- especially when there was no noise present with the old amplifier.
Pros:
Great price, surprising power for the price! , good connections, easy to use.
Cons:
Soft Hiss when no signal present, Engine noise present when old amp had none, Size (it's big)

Glad I got it!

Written By Bklynyc, DC on Saturday, June 16, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great amp. The sound is crystal clear and you can adjust it to the exact power level you need according to what sound you're looking for. The only small issue I have is its HUGE and takes up quite a bit of space (very long, that's why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5). If you want some eye candy with great sound in your trunk then you'll probably love it, if you want the same power with something that's not as big then you might be slightly (not totally), disappointed. Overall I'll take it.

As for the Crutchfield Team, this a company that runs like none I've ever seen. They repeatedly contact you after every sale to thank you, make sure your satisfied and to let you know they want you to contact them with any questions about ANYTHING! Who does this nowadays? Some businesses may do one or maybe two of those things but not all of them. I'll continue to purchase my electronics from Crutchfield fo a while to come.
Pros:
Great for the price. Clear sounding and powerful. Easy to work.
Cons:
Very long therefore taking up a lot of space.
