Alpine

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Alpine MRP-M500

by Buck Pomerantz
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

V-Power amplifiers deliver the sound quality that made Alpine famous. Highly efficient power supplies housed in sleek black casings guarantee that these amps stand out in performance and appearance. The thermal management system dissipates heat and saves power, so your V-Power amp will run reliably for years to come.

The Alpine MRP-M500 mono amplifier drives your subwoofer system with up to 500 watts RMS — enough to satisfy the hungriest bass setup. The low-pass filter puts you in command of the frequencies that reach your subs, while the variable bass boost is armed with plenty of low-end punch. A subsonic filter prevents wasted energy by eliminating ultra-low bass, putting all the power where you need it.

Preamp- and speaker-level inputs allow you to connect this amp in almost any vehicle. Let a V-Power amplifier transform the sound of your car's audio system.

Features

Power Supply: The MRP-M500 amplifier's power supply uses MOSFETs to convert DC battery voltage to the higher DC voltages needed for high power. It supplies positive and negative voltages around 0V, rather than around 6V as with conventional single-polarity power supplies. The result is higher power levels and a dynamic range wider by as much as 10dB.

Inputs: The amplifier offers both line-level and speaker-level inputs for 2 channels. The supplied speaker-level input harness allows you to connect this amplifier to a receiver without preamp outputs; aftermarket or factory. The speaker level inputs will accept the output from a high powered radio.

Terminal Covers: The amp comes with two plastic covers that protect and insulate the RCA, power, and speaker connections. Four supplied machine screws attach the covers to the amplifier.

Controls

Low Pass Filter: The amp is equipped with a 50-200Hz variable low-pass filter with a slope of 24dB/octave. This being a mono subwoofer amp, the crossover is always engaged.

Subsonic Filter: This amp utilizes a subsonic filter at 15Hz to eliminate super low frequencies that can rob power and damage speakers. The subsonic filter operates at all times, and cannot be turned off.

Bass EQ: The Bass EQ circuit provides a variable boost (0-12dB) at 50 Hz.

Connections

Left Side Of Amplifier:

  • GND (ground): gold-plated screw terminal, 0.33" wide
  • Battery: gold-plated screw terminal, 0.33" wide
  • Remote: gold-plated screw terminal, 0.33" wide
  • Speaker Output: gold-plated screw terminal, 0.33" wide

Note: Alpine recommends 8 gauge power and ground wire (minimum).

Right Side Of Amplifier:

  • Line Inputs: 1 pair of gold-plated stereo RCA jacks
  • Speaker Level Input: Molex plug input for supplied 4-pin harness

Second One!

Written By Janelle, Honolulu, HI on Friday, May 31, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The only reason I am giving this 4 stars is because I had to call tech support and get a replacement one sent out. One morning I go to start my car and my battery is dead. Had it checked out, and found out that the amp did not turn off when the keys were turned off or even when the remote wire was unplugged. Defective unit. Two days later I received a new one - working fine so far!
Pros:
Compact size, perfect for my one 12" sub; customer support; shipping time is quick!
Cons:
First one was defective?!

Fantastic amp!

Written By Anonymous, Bismarck, ND on Tuesday, May 28, 2013

I picked up this amp to replace my aging Pioneer gm-x862 to run 2 JL Audio 10w0v3s. I've always been a fan of the clean, stable power of Alpine amps, and this amp is no different. The bass sounds crisper, deeper, and more full, and the small size is perfect for my application. If you're looking for good, solid power in a small package, look no further.

Love it, Compact design and clean hitting bass. When I first saw the size , I was floored then when I heard the sound I knew I made the right choice. I have this amp firing 2 JL 10" and it bumps hard This isnt the only Alpine product I have. I will always buy Alpine products and keep doing business with Crutchfield ( Awesome customer service) that is why I've been a customer over 15+ years.

First Amp love the sound

Written By Miller, Laurens, SC on Sunday, May 19, 2013

This is my first amp and I couldn't ask for anything better. In my town most people think they have the best sound system, and I simple shut them down. I'm running two 10" Alpine type E's and they do justice. And thanks to crutchfield and friend of my that used to profesionaly install car auido. I was able to build an amazing soud system that didn't kill the bank. I tune the amp to 120 hz max, giving me lows without making the whole thing muddy. It's not only lound it's super clean. In fact most people think i'm running 12's with an amp twice the size. Soon i'm changing out my back 6 1/2's with Alpine type R's 6x9's, adding an 50 watt 4 channel amp. And a new head unit with two outputs for amps. Alpine really sold me with these products. Infact our local rogers sterio (that rips people off) haven't build bass this clean. Btw make box we build my hand with 3/4 inch MDF and fiberglassed and sealed the box completely shut. Makes a world of difference.
Pros:
Clean deep bass, tons of power
Cons:
I'm over powering my mid's and it's cleaner when tuned down two 100 hz

Keep rockin

Written By Nate, Logan,WV on Tuesday, May 14, 2013

Where do I begin. Jvc deck,m500 amp, and type e alpine 10. I know I'm not using the amps full potential, but on budget I can buy another and bridge them down to 2 ohms. After 2 days(after work) of full throttle building, from the custom .55 cubic ft box to fit under the back seat of my f-150 to replacing factory speakers(pioneer 3-way) to wiring and installing the hu and amp. Finally I get to turn it on! 30 minutes of tuning and I'm in rock heaven. 2 hours of wide open punishment and the amp is cool,10is begging for more, and I have to retune the whole system. That did it, my rock is clean, crisp, and heard the way it was intended to be. Can't say how this setup sounds with any other type of music, but I can't imagine it would be bad. I am truly satisfied with crutchfield and the end product I have. Thank you!
Pros:
Sound, price, style, the neighbors don't like it, the kick in the back when the bass hits, the duration it plays without that annoying fade
Cons:
The install is done and that's half the fun

Great Amp!

Written By Magnus, Lindsborg, KS on Sunday, May 12, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this amp for over 6 months, and it's great! I have it powering two 10inch Audiobahn subwoffers, they hit a lot harder than other systems I've heard. Definitely worth the money!
Pros:
Hits very hard, and clean
Cons:
Will shut off the amp, when the subs are hitting too hard.

great product

Written By Matt, Bridgewater, Ma on Friday, May 10, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound quality and build quality. Had the older model and loved it. There are two drawbacks I can find though. One, no remote bass level control. This would be a great improvement and very helpful. Two, no "automatic on" for high level input. I'm running this in my dodge magnum with the stock radio, it sounds great, but I had to find a way to turn it on and off through the factory wireharness and it wasn't easy.
Pros:
Great power and sound
Cons:
No remote level, no automatic on for high level inputs

Clean Power

Written By YogaDon, Rome,GA on Friday, May 10, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have this amp powering a 10'' Type R, this amp brought this sub to LIFE. Sound is clear, no distortion, my hu is a Kenwood X796 with 4v pre-amp, so it has plenty of signal to drive it. Driving the amp @ 2ohm, only gets warm after an hour of heavy use. Use 4 gauge leads, this thing likes juice.
Pros:
clean power quality heatsink
Cons:
size, fairly large for a 500 watt amp cheap speaker and pwr/grnd terminals blue light on amp is annoying in the cab of a truck (fixed that with a perm marker)

I got this amp and installed it right away into my truck. It powers my 2 10" subs perfect and sounds way better then the previous 3 amps I have tried! I can turn it up all the way and it won't shut off like my last amps did. Much more power then my last setups and I'm happy with it so far!
Pros:
Strong continuous power, small, clean look
Cons:
none.

Great Amp

Written By All Day 808, Kauai, Hi on Monday, April 08, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Small amp with plenty enough power. Perfect amp for people that don't wanna go big and spend alot of money. I get 4 vehicles and all of them have alpine amps from the PDX 1000x1 with a JL audio w7 to this amp with 2 10's. Cant go wrong with Alpine and Crutchfield. Free shipping to the 808 is almost unheard of.
Pros:
Great all around bass amp. Lots of subs that is perfect for it.
Cons:
If you find one let everyone know. I can't.

The power is clean but is picky about the power source input. I had to put the gain all the way up to get close to the same volume of my old amp that finally burnt after ten years.
Pros:
Clean sound
Cons:
Does not seem to put out the power it is rated at.

Great amp even tho low cost

Written By Richie K, Columbus, ohio on Thursday, March 21, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this for a couple weeks now with 2 10 inch Polk audio dxi subs and it says 500 watts on here but I think it's actually 600. Because of how hard it hits and it's 300x2. I don't know how they got 500. But it's a great amplifier. Even though its fairly cheap for an amp it still preforms very well and meets all my expectations. Works perfect. Easily mounted and wired. Great amp
Pros:
Easy to wire, easy to mount, preforms excellent.
Cons:
Nothing so far. Only have had it working for a few weeks though. Great amp

Cheater amp!

Written By Dale W, Wahpeton ND on Wednesday, March 20, 2013

I can say nothing negative about this amplifier! I've owned the amp for going on three years now and it's output is as strong as the first day of power up. (bench tested 2/30/13 @ 1 ohm load 590 @ 12v) I've had this beast running a 15" Memphis mojo at one time, I now have it running Two 10" dual 2 ohm Orion competition HCCA102. The amp has never clipped or heated up, I run the gain @ 2/4 power. bass boost 11db. crossover 50Hz. Like I said "Cheater Amp" If your responsible and don't abuse this amp it will not disappoint!
Pros:
Runs stable @ 1 ohm. underrated power supply. reliable, trusty, honest amplifier.
Cons:
none for the price!
