Enclosed Subwoofers 101

An enclosed subwoofer is a box with a subwoofer already installed. The advantage to buying an enclosed sub is that the manufacturer made the sub, then designed and built the box as a perfect match, so you'll get the best possible performance. Every enclosed sub has a maximum RMS power handling rating, so pair it with an amp with a similar RMS power rating to get the best performance.

Our take on the Rockford Fosgate Prime R1L-1X10

by Dominic Devito

Rockford Fosgate's Prime loaded sub enclosures let you put big bass in your car without taking a big hit to your bank account. These tough-as-nails sealed boxes feature 5/8"-thick medium-density fiberboard construction and heavy-duty black carpeting for protection. And Rockford Fosgate used their Loudspeaker Enclosure Analysis Program to create an enclosure that'll draw every ounce of bass out of its sub.

The R1L-1X10 sealed loaded enclosure comes with one Prime 10" sub and is wired for 4-ohm impedance. The sub handles 150 watts and features a polypropylene cone and butyl rubber surround for accurate bass that just won't quit.

Highlights:

  • sealed hatchback-style enclosure with one 10" Prime subwoofer
  • 5/8" medium density fiberboard construction covered with black carpet
  • 4-ohm total impedance
  • power handling: 50-150 watts RMS (300 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 28-200 Hz
  • sensitivity: 86 dB
  • 16"W x 12-1/16"H x 12-1/4"D1 x 7-1/8"D2

At Crutchfield, you'll get detailed, accurate information that's hard to find elsewhere. Features

Overview: The Rockford Fosgate R1L-1X10 Single Prime 10" 150 watt loaded enclosure features high current binding posts, 5/8" MDF construction, and is finished with high density carpet. The R1L-1X10 produces accurate, loud, and punchy bass.

Enclosure: The Rockford Fosgate Prime R1L-1X10 features a sealed enclosure constructed of 5/8" MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard). The enclosure is covered with high density black carpeting. The sealed enclosure features high current compression terminals on the left side of the box (when facing the woofer). The enclosure's terminals will accommodate up to 12 gauge speaker wire and present a 4-ohm load to your amplifier.

Woofer: The R1L-1X10 has a single Rockford Fosgate Prime R1S410 woofer. The R1S410 is a 10-inch, 4-ohm single voice coil subwoofer. It features a solid stamped steel frame, quick-release compression terminals, and a Parabolic polypropylene cone. The Prime R1S410 subwoofer is optimized for sealed enclosures.

    • Parabolic Polypropylene Cone Design: The Parabolic Polypropylene cone design results in solid bass reproduction.
    • Aluminum Voice Coils: The Rockford Fosgate Prime subwoofer uses anodized aluminum voice coil formers that provide excellent heat dissipation. The woofer's aluminum voice coils keep the speaker running cool, even under demanding conditions. Unlike traditional plastic substitutions, aluminum acts like a heat-sink to quickly dissipate thermal build-up on the voice coil. This keeps subwoofers cool during high SPL conditions.
    • Stamped Steel Basket: The R1S410 subwoofer features a stamped steel basket for added rigidity.
    • Compression Terminals: The Prime R1S410 features spring post terminals which accommodate up to 12 AWG speaker wire.
    • CEA-2031 Compliant: Power handling on the Rockford Fosgate Prime R1S410 subwoofer conforms to CEA-2031 industry standards. This means the subwoofer has the capacity to handle power under continuous demand, not instantaneous power handling, that over time, can damage voice coils.

Manual: No paperwork is included in the box, but the manual is available on Rockford Fosgate's web site.

    Great subwoofer

Written By Sw65, Urbanna, VA on Saturday, December 22, 2012

I've had this subwoofer for about a year and a half now and I have never been more satisfied. This little guy really makes my chevy colorado boom. I'm powering it with a dual 300 watt 2 channel bridged and it pushes this sub well. Great smooth and tight bass. Makes my mirrors shake and seats vibrate. Hands down, I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great sub that doesn't take up alot of room. And if anything happened to this sub I would turn around I buy another one.
    Pros:
Awesome bass, well built, simple, and doesn't take up alot of room

I have it installed in the trunk of my Lexus IS300 and it punches nicely, It's the perfect size for my trunk. Make sure you have a good amp, it is 4 ohm sub; I have a 125W Kicker mono and it is maxed out to make it boom.

I bought this sub because I wanted to still have room left in my cargo area, but did not want to have a little tiny bazooka in the back. That said, wow does this thing hit hard! It is a killer product for the price. I would recommend this to anyone that wants to bump but doesn't want to set car alarms off.

at 16 its hard to buy yourself a repectable system. i had a temporary job at my moms work to get my sound system. this was a year and some change ago. i got this sub and box with the r300-4 amp and some sony xplod door speaks. i was all smiles! for starts, this sub has 150 watts rms and it just blasts it beautifully. going back to what i said about a respectable system, ive gotten several compliments on my bass setup, and a few "that little things making all that noise??". its an incredible sub and at incredible deal. now a year later its making some noises that say "im about to start going out" (it was my fault though im new to systems i think the gain was too high) so im alil sad my baby going out but glad that i can upgrade it at the same time. recently i bought 4 new speakers, for the door i got rockford fosgate power t1 6.5" and quantum audio 4x10. i drive a 1998 s10 ext. cab, fun little truck! box space on this sub is great it fit like a glove in the back of my little truck with the seat all the way back (very nice!!).

i highly recommend this sub for any kind of music and any experience level with systems. it plays just about anything and sounds great! for a sealed box it has pretty good low bass notes and tight kicks (sometimes it loosens up if i set my amp for blasting). excellent product, it would last a heck of a lot longer if i hadnt tortured it so much, but hey its my first sub!

Got this to go into the back of my bassless Sorento. Paired it with a Sound Ordnance mono amp. This sub sounds great, I listen to all types of music and it sounds good from classical and jazz up to rock and rap. it has PLENTY of kick to it, even as small as the enclosure is. It easily tops my old 12 inch sub, I must admit I was pretty surprised once I got it dialed in that it could hit that hard. I recommend this sub highly!

    Very good product

Written By Proboscis, Covington, Tn on Monday, March 28, 2011

Good bass does sometimes come in small packages. If you are looking for tight and accurate bass in a small, lightweight box, this product is for you.

I replaced a worn out 12 inch Sony xplode (in a ported box) with one of these. I have my sound ordinanace m-2100 amp bridged to 200 watts and pushing it with my gain about halfway and my bass boost on 12db and it rocks hard.

Now the bass isn't quite as deep as the 12 and it doesn't resonate as much. It does however hit really hard and takes up very little space in the trunk of my Nissan Sentra. It looks really good back there, too. I would definately recommend this to someone who is just looking to add bass to a system for personal use. Someone whom isn't trying to boom around the block. It's not for competitions (unless you buy three or four). I am considering buying another to make a stronger punch at lower volumes. As small as the box is, it won't be an issue to slide another back there.

    Great Little Sub

Written By ShaneF, Arkansas on Thursday, August 26, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I found this Subwoofer and thought it would add a little bass to my factory system in my 2009 Wrangler 2dr hardtop, without taking up what little space I have behind the rear seat. Let me tell you, It met all my bass and space needs and then some. Every time I get a hair cut and turn up a bass heavy song I can Feel my hair moving! People who ride with me typically think I've got 2 12's back there. I have it facing rearward and shoved over to the passenger side. I'm pushing it with an old amp I"ve had for about 10yrs. It puts out 175w bridged at 4 ohms. It took a little tuning with the ReQ bass enhancer that I'm using, and playing with settings on the amp, but once I got it right it blends great with the factory system (and sounds better than the factory sub that some of these Wranglers come with) If you want to impress people down the block, or you want competition level bass, then you probably won't like it, but for my purposes I love it. Small package, Great price, Great sound, Can't beat it.

    Holy Cow...

Written By Alex, ft worth texas on Thursday, January 21, 2010

I had purchased a 400W Polk Audio Db1212, along with the kicker 400.1 amp, and man it hit hard. I think I had a bad sub from the manufacture though, because smelt very strange from the get-go, and blew a week later. I then saw a video on youtube of this sub, being pushed from a Rockford Fosgate Prime 150-2, that I HAD from previous amprige of my 6x9.s I upgraded the speaker amp to the eclipse 4ch 60W amp, and thought I was now at a loss because my Fosgate amp had nothing to power. Long and behold that video sold me on this sub. I thought, heck, why not try it. Crutchfield has a great reputation and if i wasn't satisfied I could return it.

So I hooked this all up and WOW. Just WOW this thing sounds EXACTALLY the same as my old 400W, for nearly a fourth of what I paid!!! When the trunks open and your showing one, it's no magic show and doesn't seem to hit hard, but once your buddy hops in the car and the doors closed, it'll 'wow' them. My friend asked if I still had my old kicker/sub, and I said no and showed him what I had now. He said it didn't sound that loud because he was standing behind the car, listening to it with the trunk open. I said listen to it from the car, closed the trunk, and he got in. He was blown away, and kept saying "wow dude that's amazing, haha it feels like my hairs moving"

On the fosgate, I have the gain at about 3. Yes 3, i'm scared to turn it up any more xD. You'll be amazed at what this little 10" does!!!

This sub was is installed in my corolla. Now I get full sound scene. With proper
wiring and good amp you will get a clear, deep bass without distortion. Sub
handles 150 W easily. I think RF R1L is a very nice sub for mid size car, worths
its money 100%, especially for its price. You would not be disappointed.

    Surprise

Written By sam, Munford, TN on Wednesday, April 15, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was just looking to add some low end sound without spending too much. I shopped around and thought this looked like a good deal. I paired it with an Orion Cobalt CO500.1, also from Crutchfield, and got them both for a good price. But when I hooked them up together, I was really surprised at how well it sounded, plenty of deep bass, punchy, and clear. This 10 inch sub is neck and neck with the 12 inch I have in another vehicle. If you are looking for good bass without spending a fortune, try the combination I have here and I don't think you will be disappointed.

    small but fierce!

Written By Shawn, Norfolk VA on Tuesday, March 24, 2009

This little sub rocks out!! I have a no name 150W amp with a 1/2farad cap behind this sub, crossed over at 100Hz and it flat out sounds GREAT! Its tight, punchy, has very good low end extension and blends in seamlessly. Even in the trunk of my 07 corolla that is pretty well Isolated from the car this sub really sounds great. Not even broken in yet .. it sounded awesome right out of the box. I HIGHLY recommend this sub to anyone considering it. Its small and lightweight (though very solid) as well so you wont pull muscles on the install or loose much for trunk space. Five stars all the way.
