Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Pioneer DEH-P8400BH

by Ken Nail

Packed with features
Check out the features you'll find on Pioneer's DEH-P8400BH CD receiver — Bluetooth® for hands-free calling and audio streaming, an HD Radio™ tuner for the best in radio sound, and Pioneer's MIXTRAX for DJ-style audio and visual effects. When you add in iPod® controls and a great-looking variable-color display, you're looking at a receiver that'll bring safety, convenience, and superb sound to your car.

Pioneer DEH-P8400BH

Bluetooth for safety and convenience
Pioneer's DEH-P8400BH mutes the music when a call comes in and displays the incoming number or contact name. Just press a button and talk — no fumbling for your phone. The receiver stores your phone book if you like, so outgoing calls are easy too. If you've got music on your phone, use audio streaming to send it to the receiver, with no wires to get tangled up.

HD Radio for unparalleled radio sound
HD Radio's sonic advantages are impressive — FM broadcasts that are near-CD quality, with AM that's as good as what you're used to on FM. And if your local HD Radio station employs multicasting, this Pioneer allows you to tune into multiple channels on the same frequency, so you'll have more entertainment choices. Plus, the iTunes® tagging feature lets your save song info when your iPod's connected, so you can purchase the tracks you like later.

Pioneer for great sound
At the heart of this receiver, the built-in amp delivers plenty of power for strong sound. You'll also find an impressive collection of sound-shaping controls. Pioneer's Easy EQ 5-band equalizer lets you adjust the sound to your car's interior, while the Advanced Sound Retriever reverses the compression process to give you more high-frequency sparkle and musical detail from your digital audio files.

Play your music and streaming sources
The DEH-P8400BH plays all your CDs, including those with MP3 and WMA files burned onto them. Plug your iPod into the USB input, and you can use the Pioneer's controls to run the show. Once connected, the receiver bypasses your iPod's built-in digital-to-analog converter, using its own high-quality DAC to deliver your music files with the highest fidelity possible. When you plug your iPhone® into the USB port, you'll be able to take charge of your Pandora® Internet radio stations from the receiver. And this Pioneer's 1-amp USB port will charge your devices in record time.

Choose colors to match your car and your taste
The bright dot-matrix display displays all system information clearly, and you can adjust the display and control colors of this receiver separately, with thousands of possible combinations on tap. The DEH-P8400BH will blend right in, whatever the color of your car's control surfaces and dials.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPhone® 5 Note: You'll need to update this Pioneer receiver to enable Bluetooth control and metadata display for the iPhone 5 or other Apple iOS6 devices. This update requires a laptop with Bluetooth running Windows 7.

Drawing from Pioneer's rich DJ heritage and passion for music, MIXTRAX delivers a unique DJ infused listening experience to listeners in the car. MIXTRAX takes the music from your USB-connected iPod, iPhone, or other flash memory device and plays it back with added transitions and effects, creating a virtual DJ inside the DEH-P8400BH head unit (not compatible with iPod/App mode). Engine Time Alert: This setting allows you to measure the length of time that elapses from when the head unit is turned on and display the amount of elapsed time per set period (15 min., 30 min., or Off). There will also be an audible alarm. This function is handy if you are listening to the radio with the vehicle' ignition is in the accessory position, and the engine off.

Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. You can turn the dimmer on or off. The automatic dimmer function only works when the orange/white illumination wire in the wiring harness is connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit.

      HD Radio

HD Radio: The Pioneer DEH-P8400BH's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-like sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free. The unit's tuner also supports analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to HDRadio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 3 multicast programs (HD1 to HD3, and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible analog or HD AM/FM stations.

iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from a HD Radio or RDS FM broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store.

Supertuner IIID: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

Reception Blending: If a digital broadcast reception condition gets poor, this unit automatically switches to the analog broadcast of the same frequency level. If this function is set to "On", the tuner switches between digital broadcast and analog broadcast automatically. If this function is 'Off', reception will be conducted within an analog broadcast.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest analog or HD stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

XM Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect and control Pioneer's GEX-P920XM XM tuner (130P920XM, sold separately).

Note: A subscription to XM, plus the proper antenna is required in order to receive satellite radio programming.

      Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The DEH-P8400BH is equipped with built-in Bluetooth ver. 3.0 (powered by Parrot) allowing to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. Bluetooth Technology is a short-range wireless radio connectivity technology that was developed as a cable replacement for mobile phones and other electronic devices. Bluetooth operates in 2.4 GHz frequency range and transmits voice and data at speeds up to 1 megabit per second.

Bluetooth Profiles: In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

      • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
      • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

Phone Pairing: Up to 5 Bluetooth-compatible devices can be registered to this head unit. Only one device can be used at a time.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Pioneer DEH-P8400BH.

Hands-Free Communication: The DEH-P8400BH supports wireless hands-free communication (HFP/HSP/OPP/PBAB) for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The head unit will display the caller's information and an audible ring tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker during an incoming call. You can manually answer an incoming call or have the unit automatically answer the call. The DEH-P8400BH allows you to carry on a phone conversation from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone using the head unit's external microphone and your car audio speakers. During a conversation you can adjust the volume, as well as switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode. Using the DEH-P8400BH, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:

      • Phone Book: The phone book in your Bluetooth enabled cellular phone will be transferred automatically when the phone is paired to this unit. After finding the number you want to call in the phone book from the head unit, you can select the entry and make the call. If a lot of numbers are registered in the phone book, you can search for a phone number by the contact person's name alphabetically (A-Z).
      • Call Log: The 80 most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.

External Microphone: During your wireless phone call, you can talk into the head unit's included external microphone, and listen to the other party through the vehicle's speaker system. The external microphone provides better performance in noisy environments than the integrated microphone found on the front-panel of many aftermarket or factory radios. The microphone features a 13' cord that plugs into the back of the radio, and comes with an adjustable visor-mount clip. The microphone measures 0.475" (diameter) x 1.445" (depth).

Note: The unit is not equipped with an integrated microphone. The external microphone must be installed for Bluetooth hands-free communication.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Pioneer DEH-P8400BH also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The DEH-P8400BH will be able to control basic playback features; such as Play, Pause, Stop, Previous track, and Next track. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Note: The Pioneer head unit requires an optional Bluetooth firmware update (HW05-SW01.27.20) to enable Bluetooth AVRCP control and metadata display for the iPhone 5 or other Apple iOS6 device. If you do not own an iPhone 5 or iOS6 device, there is no need to install this update.

iPod Display: The head unit will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music file information, including - Track number, Folder number, Elapsed playing time, Song title, Artist name, and Album title.

Note: There is no music information displayed when this unit is set to 'App Mode'. Instead, all music information will be displayed on your iPod/iPhone's LCD screen. The head unit's LCD will only display the text - 'App Mode'.

Pandora App: The free Pandora App lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the Pioneer DEH-P8400BH using your connected Apple iPhone, via the Pioneer CD-IU50/CD-IU51 iPod connector cable (sold separately) or the USB/iPod dock cable that came with your iPhone. Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Auxiliary Input: The DEH-P8400BH is equipped with a front-panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player. AUX must be turned on in the setup menu in order to be selected as a source.

2nd Auxiliary Input (optional): In addition to the front-panel minijack Aux input (AUX 1), you can connect a second auxiliary component by connecting an IP-Bus/RCA connector (AUX 2). The optional CD-RB10 (130CDRB10, sold separately) lets you connect an additional auxiliary component via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit.

      Disc Playback

Compatible Discs: The Pioneer DEH-P8400BH supports playback of CD-Audio, CD-Text, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3 and WMA files recorded on, CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

AAC Decoding: This unit will playback AAC files with a bit rate of 16-320 kbps (encoded by iTunes) recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs.

Note: The AAC file (.m4a) must originate from iTunes. The AAC file must also not contain DRM protection. Not compatible with Apple Lossless.

WAV File Playback: The DEH-P8400BH offers playback of audio WAV files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs. The head unit supports 8-bit and 16-bit LPCM (Linear PCM) WAV files with a sampling frequency between 16 to 48 kHz.

File/Track Name List: The Name List feature displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD or connected USB device, so you can easily access your music. The Name List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc.

Repeat & Random: The Pioneer DEH-P8400BH offers Repeat (disc/track/folder) and Random (disc/folder) playback modes.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Auto Off Eject: When you eject a disc, the unit will automatically power off (unless you switch sources before ejecting the disc).

Installation Angle: Optimum CD playback performance is obtained when the unit is installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.

      Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Pioneer in-dash head unit utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-P8400BH is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-P8400BH are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-P8400BH are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

3-Way Rotary Knob: The Pioneer DEH-P8400BH features a 3-way rotary knob combined with a 4-way lever for easy control. You can scroll through your music and audio settings with greater ease using the 3-way rotary knob and 4-way lever.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. Hear the detail, warmth, and clarity, the way the artist intended it, from all of your highly compressed MP3 and WMA files stored on your USB device, iPod/iPhone, and portable media players. By restoring data (especially higher frequencies) that tends to get lost in the digital compression process, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever technology enhances audio reproduction nearly all the way up to 20 kHz frequencies

Preset EQ: The Pioneer DEH-P8400BH is equipped with seven EQ presets. You can choose from Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2.

Graphic EQ: The DEH-P8400BH's two Custom EQ modes (1 & 2) let you adjust the head unit's 5-band graphic EQ (100Hz, 315Hz, 1.25kHz, 3.15kHz, & 8kHz). You can adjust each band between +6 to -6.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6 (Gain: 0dB to +12dB).

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Three Pair of 4.0-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-P8400BH features three pair of 4.0-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Crossovers: The DEH-P8400BH employs high pass and low pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speakers.

      • High Pass: The head unit's 12dB/octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
      • Low Pass: The subwoofer preamp output features an18dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.

Subwoofer Controls: The Pioneer DEH-P8400BH lets you adjust the subwoofer preamp output's phase (normal/reverse) and volume (+6 to -24).

Rear Channel Speaker Output: You can choose to use the rear channel output (speaker and preout) for full-range speaker or subwoofer. If you select "subwoofer", you can connect a 4-ohm subwoofer directly to each rear speaker lead, or a 2-ohm subwoofer to one of the rear speaker leads, without using an external amplifier.

      Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The DEH-P8400BH comes with an IR wireless remote control. The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. The mute button allows you to quickly lower the volume by about 90% (function that cannot be performed from the front panel). In addition, the remote provides answer/end phone controls for Bluetooth.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

A little difficult to use, but figuring it out OK. I wish the volume control knob had some sort of friction quality on the edge of the knob.

You can't beat the features / price ratio on this headunit. Where else can you get HD radio, rear USB, Pandora support, Bluetooth, and 4V pre-outs at this price? Nowhere! I bought this headunit to replace the stock HU in a 2003 Ford Focus so I'd have USB and aux-in. It does the job perfectly. Sound quality is definitely better than the stock HU even though it was an "Audiophile" system. The included USB extension cable was a nice touch. I haven't install the BT mic yet but look forward to having that feature in the future. The only cons are its flashy appearance and the difficult navigation. I didn't realize how much I would miss the preset buttons until I didn't have them! Everything is still perfectly usable, just not intuitive as it should be.
      Pros:
Tons of features! Good sound quality Great price Included accessories (USB cable, BT mic, remote)
      Cons:
Difficult navigation Flashy appearance instead of classy appearance Mixtrax is worthless

This deck was purchased to replace a Clarion CZ500 that kept having problems (I am glad I bought the extended warranty). I enjoy the bluetooth, sound and Ipod controls. Overall I am very pleased with the product. We will see if it lasts since the Clarion did not (had problems with the clarion after only 6 months and had it fixed three times with no luck).
      Pros:
Sound, ease of use once I played with it, ipod controls, HD built in
      Cons:
Manual is vague, hard to figure out if electronics are not your thing (but since you bought from Crutchfield you must know something), the display is very small.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In my experience Pioneer has some of the best receivers available. The instructions are not very clear so it helps to have previous experience with Pioneer auto receivers. The sound quality is excellent and the radio reception is outstanding. I installed this unit in a 1993 Miata and the lever on the multi control knob is in a very good location for this car. I also liked being able to select an illumination color that is very close to the instrument lighting on the Miata. The bluetooth works very with my Kyocera cell phone but I wouldn't call it hands free since you have to select phone numbers by looking and not talking to into the mic.The Pioneer replaced an Alpine unit that I was very dissatisfied with from the day I purchased it. bought it. I am very pleased that I made the switch.
      Pros:
Sound quality, radio reception, wide selection of illumination colors, Pioneer quality.
      Cons:
Sketchy instructions. When disconnecting the car battery everything except the bluetooth needs to be reprogrammed.

And the blue tooth is not hands free callin rememer that! All in all this unit sounds good but thats all. I would not buy this again if it breaks oh and the menu interface... Terrible!!! This is the first unit ever i needed to read instructions on.

Best car stereo Ive ever owned!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This new Pioneer head unit is the best Pioneer I have ever owned! Bluetooth works great and automaticly links to known bluetooth devices. The bluetooth phone feature is great it even works with my old cheap flip phone! Mixtrax is pretty cool for show and is easily disabled when not wanted. The display actually has the option to dim when you turn on your headlights so your not blinded by the bright colors while night driving. All around sounds quality is great and highly adjustable! I did alot of research on this unit before I bought it and it is even better than I expected! I have no regrets on upgrading to the bluetooth version. The install was easy as pie and it looks great installed!
      Pros:
Bluetooth,HD radio,Charges USB devices, 3 high volt pre outs for auxillary amps and speakers, display lighting customization, Great sound! You can customize the sound and lighting to fit your style. You can turn off the display completely if wanted and still use the unit. When you hit a button it will only display for a few seconds and shut back off. Good for road trips at night when you need to focus on the road. I shopped around and this is the BEST price I found anywhere!
      Cons:
Its a little complicated to adjust some of the settings. Sometimes I have to scan through the manual to figure it out. Wish I could change ringtones for incoming calls. The unit only has one ringtone. Also the background display has a limited selection such as some of the older Pioneer models. Maybe they could make them to where users could download new ringtones or backgrounds and upload them via I pod or I phone? The unit did not come with a protective case for the face plate.

      Pioneer DEH-P8400BH

Written By Earthwateruser, Germantown, MD on Friday, April 20, 2012

Overall, I am very satisfied with this purchase. The Bluetooth works great with both my old HTC Aria phone and my girlfriend's much new HTC EVO4G. HD radio comes in loud and clear, although you have to connect the tabbed blue lead that says 'remote amp' to the blue antenna wire lead. Apparently the 'remote amp' is an antenna amplifier. I almost had to call Crutchfield to figure that one out. I think the MIXTRAX feature is very cool, but it appears to not work with HD Radio or CDs. Only MP3s, WMAs, etc. Of course that might be wrong because the freakin' documentation w/ the stereo is literally laughable. Figuring out how to set the tuner pre-sets isn't even clearly described and it is NOT intuitive (and this about my 10th aftermarket unit).

Installation was a piece of cake in my 2009 cube, but I might have to reinstall it using the front mount brackets to get the faceplate to detach. The rear mount bezel (in the cube at least) doesn't leave enough room to detach the faceplate. But the installation is WAY clean. I stuck the Bluetooth microphone on the inside edge of the Double DIN cubby and it works great and has a swivel to aim it at the center of the car for my passenger. Bluetooth audio quality is good. The rear USB includes a very long USB extension cable, but you'll have to ream out one of the holes in the cubby if you are going to run the cable through it. It's not an iPod cable, just a USB extension.

Sound is MUCH better even w/ factory speakers.
      Pros:
Lots of great features for a very reasonable price. Pioneer quality. USB extension cable included. Great installation accessories from Crutchfield (as always). A solid upgrade from a factory head unit.
      Cons:
Poor documentation of MIXTRAX features and other tuner operations in typically lousy Pioneer manual. Antenna connection required some trial and error. Not enough clearance for faceplate to detach when installed rear mount w/ the DIN+cubby bezel.

      Cons:
A little difficult to navigate through the menus, but once you learn how - it's all good!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The main reason I replaced my factory radio was to get Bluetooth connectivity. Using FM transmitters and cassette plugins was a pain and does not work well. The P8400's bluetooth works without any problem with my Droid X. I had some questions in doing the replacement and Crutchfield support was very responsive and knowledgeable. I can't praise the support enough, and my daytime job is networking tech support/

I have yet to put a CD in but the sound is very good, glad I spent the extra bucks and very glad I bought from Crutchfield.

The microphone for the bluetooth seems to work OK, I am still trying to find the right location to attach it. Putting it on the steering wheel column was not great for those who I was talking to, but I am not sure I have done all that can be done.
      Pros:
      Bluetooth works well.
      Cons:
      None that I have found

      Great Purchase

Installed in a 2008 Chevrolet Colorado
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great stereo! Purchased for a 2008 Chevy Colorado, wired with the GMOS1 harness in about 90 minutes (GMOS1 poor instructions took the most time, will review that too, follow the wire colors and your fine). Installed the stereo as darkness fell with a flashlight in about 15 minutes. The trim plate is a little larger than the opening of the Colorado dash trim, I filed the bevel off of the Pioneer trim plate on both sides (plus a little more) and it fits snug. I also added the Pioneer XM module. This is a great addition and puts the dash mount add on units to shame. The Pioneer XM sounds amazing. I bought an iPod Touch to use with this stereo - works great, very intuitive, plug it in and it just works. My cell phone (Casio G'Zone) paired up right away with the stereo, not as intuitive as the iPod, but works excellent. I am able to easily take calls with my stereo! The callers say the sound is great and they didn't know I was driving. I have not figured out the bluetooth audio yet, it pairs and starts playing my cell phone mp3's but the sound doesn't come through. I haven't spent much time trying to figure it out though. The sound has a little too much base for my factory speakers, needed to the the high pass filter and take the bass down with the Graphic EQ - will upgrade those later. My girls love the MIXTRAX when I play the iPod - very cool I bought a 8 GB USB drive and loaded it up with hours of tunes, will leave that in the glove box
      Pros:
Price - nothing else compares with this for the cost / option ratio iPod is cool and intuitive XM Module far superior to a dash mount XM add on Cell phone through Bluetooth keeps your eyes on the road Remote is a nice touch, again, keeps your eyes on the road MIXTRAX - very cool option Stereo has the COOL FACTOR - my teenager and her friends love it Background and color options - like getting another stereo for free!
      Cons:
Graphic EQ is touchy, takes out too much or not enough - but you can mess around with the various filters, boosters, EQs etc until you get a sound you want. Makes you want to spend more on the options and speakers (is that a bad thing?)

Installed in a 2011 Subaru Impreza
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this unit into my 2011 Subaru Impreza 2.5i - First of all, Crutchfield supplied everything needed like usual and made the install a breeze!

I did quite a bit of research before choosing this unit and here's why I did; HD Radio Built-In, Bluetooth Built-In, REAR USB!!! It's really sad to see the extreme lack of REAR USB input in todays aftermarket stereo's. I hate seeing a big USB jump drive sticking out the front of the stereo just begging to be smack and cracked or broken off. I've been a Pioneer fan for a long time and have installed them in my Wrangler, and Dodge trucks, and went to them again for my new Subaru! Can't wait to get some new door speakers and a small sub to really fill out the sound and use this stereo to it's fullest.

Although the navigation is a little quirky, it works. The color matching display looks great with the stock dash cluster and accent lights.

      Great Stereo - OK Bluetooth...

Written By Adam, Springfield, MA on Monday, April 02, 2012
Installed in a 1998 Toyota Camry CE

The stereo in my 98' Toyato Camry died and I figured it a good opportunity to upgrade. I really wanted something with good iPod controls and Bluetooth so I can talk hands free and have everything integrated through my stereo. I originally was looking at the Alpine unit that it similar but seeing as it was out of stock checked out this unit as well. I LOVED the fact that the USB was in the back of the unit, if I'm going to install a new head unit I don't want to STILL have wires littering my dash... I figured it had Bluetooth and I once had an older Pioneer that worked well, so what could go wrong?

I'm very happy with the way the install turned out! I driller a small hole in the back of the pocket I had to install below the radio and ran an apple iPod cable from the stereo into the pocket. I can plug my iPhone in easily and still have access to it but with NO cables littering my car :D! I love the way the stereo works and the controls are nothing to complain about! The Pandora function is super cool as well.

My only unhappiness is with the Bluetooth, to put it nicely, it sucks. As soon as you answer a call or have a call answered you'll know what I mean. The other person says, 'It's loud, I can't hear you, and why are you screaming?' You know how that goes... I should have gotten the Alpine unit which allows you to control the sensitivity of the microphone...
      Pros:
Interface is great. Ipod controls are awesome! Pandora app is really cool!
      Cons:
Bluetooth micro sucks! It's really sensitivey and in older louder cars it makes for terrible sounds to the other perosn on the phone! I don't think this is adjustable. I installed the microphone in a spot with no wind or which would be noisy and it still sucks. I am still using my headphones for call which I was trying to avoid in the first place... NOT happy with the Sound Quality of calls! Also it is the slightest bit glitchy with the ipod interface if you plug in headphone during a call...

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The reason i had began looking at a new radio was because i had my car stolen. As you can imagine everything that had been of any value was taken. I had a cheaper model pioneer and had decided to stick with pioneer. i was kinda hesitant about getting it and did a lot of looking around and found that crutchfield really had the best deal. The main reason i had gone with the radio was for the bluetooth ability. i ordered it and it came in exactly when they said it would. got the package open and found the installation kit and instructions which was above and beyond.the instructions for removing the factory radio, install of the new one and was well detailed and had good pictures. was a perfect match to my 99 acura tl, even had instructions for door panel removal. the install kit is WAY better then the one i had bought from bestbuy. first impression after install overall is an awesome radio. could have used a few more options like with the mixtrax it would be nice to change the sound of changing tracks and also a better selection of backgrounds. i have infinity reference door speakers and it sounds amazing in radio, cd and usb. 5 band equalizer makes it for great customization according to your preference. bluetooth works okay with my samsung infuse, music occasionally skips and wont show you track title on the songs you play but allows for full control of playing music.
      Pros:
it has plenty of customizing options
      Cons:
radio doesn't come with anything to put the face in when detached.

Not As Good As I Expected, But Still Worth Having

Written By TechBoyBen, Memphis, TN on Saturday, March 31, 2012
Installed in a 2001 Ford Mustang
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace my failing OEM receiver in my beefed up 2001 Mustang GT. The car is loud, but with the Dynamat Extreme sound dampening material lining the interior and trunk of the car, I can still hear enough of the sound system to enjoy it over the road noise of the car. I was torn between this unit and the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X996. The descision came down to a diffrence between this unit having the MixTrax feature, and the Radio Data System while the Kenwood was $100 more, offered Pandora support via Blackberry (my job provides a free Blackberry phone which I use constantly), and better output based off the RMS output. I went with this unit becuase I understood that the RDS would let me search stations by genre and MixTrax just seemed like it would be a cool feature taht made my receiver stand out. Well, the RDS features don't offer station searching and MixTrax is poorly documented and not nearly as cool as the computer application that supports it. So, at the end of the install, I wish I had gone with the Kenwood unit.

I will say that this receiver sounds amazing though! If you're looking for a good quality digital radio receiver with rear USB support, handsfree phone features including a satelight microphone, and good audio controls then this receiver exceeds expectations. The useless features that won me over make me want to give a bad rating, but at the end of the day the quality of the receiver still stands out enough to receive a good one.
      Pros:
-Great sound and audio controls -Good quality handsfree phone support -Customizable color buttons and screen for a look that matches your style -Overall outstanding features.
      Cons:
-Not all features are as good as they sound -The control lever on the front can be awkward when driving -MixTrax is pointless except for annoying lighting effects -USB playback takes about a minute to initialize.

Very nice unit with a lot of features.
      Pros:
Lots of features and power for the price. Bluetooth works great.
      Cons:
Dial is a little awkward to adjust while driving. If you accidentally press in the button while turning it it throws it in another mode. The display is hard to read in all but a couple modes and light settings making the amount of options in this area a bit of a moot point.
