Exceptionally easy to set up

Just like the rest of the Sonos family, the Sonos SUB is a breeze to get up and running. Place the SUB in the room where you want more bass from your PLAY:3, PLAY:5, or CONNECT:AMP and press a button. The SUB connects to other Sonos players using Sonos' proprietary wireless network, so you can place it anywhere in your room where it'll have access to power. It doesn't need to be connected to your speakers or Sonos player.

From the review The Sonos Sub: big-bass sound, one-button setup

"Before adding the Sub, I thought my Sonos system sounded great. But adding the Sub gave a whole new dimension to every song I play. In the acoustic tracks, the bottom end really filled out and I heard more depth in bass guitar and drum notes. In songs with a deeper, more-pounding bass track, the Sub really took off."

Product Research

Features

Sonos Sub: The Sonos Sub is a wireless powered subwoofer, designed to add deep bass (down to 25 Hz) to your Sonos listening experience. The Sub works with any amplified Sonos player, including the Play:1, Play:3, & Play:5, plus the Sonos Connect:Amp & Playbar (all sold separately). It does not work with un-amplified Sonos players, such as the Connect (ZP90).

Woofer & Amplifier Design: The Sonos Sub features two force-canceling speakers (3" x 6" race-track shaped drivers) positioned face-to-face to provide deep, rich bass with no resonance from the cabinet. The speakers are powered by two Class-D digital amplifiers, perfectly tuned to match the speakers. The speakers are mounted into a unique cabinet that features an acoustic slot and dual acoustic ports that encircle the enclosure to enhance the Sub's performance.

Wireless Connection: The Sonus Sub can be associated with any amplified Sonos powered speaker or the Sonos Playbar. It Works on your home WiFi network with any 802.11b/g, 2.4GHz broadcast capable router. It lso works on SonosNet, a secure AES encrypted, peer-to-peer wireless mesh network dedicated exclusively for your Sonos system to reduce WiFi interference.

Setup: Once you have positioned the Sub in the room, you can press the Join button on the side of the Sub in order for the system to recognize it. The system automatically adjusts the audio settings to perfectly balance the Sub and the paired Sonos component for best performance. All of the filter settings, active equalization, and time alignment are done digitally through a state-of-the-art Digital Signal Processor (DSP). During setup, you will be prompted, through the Sonos Controller software, to set the subwoofer's level and phase. In some cases, you will be prompted to select the size of the stereo speakers (compact, bookshelf/ceiling, or floor) connected to the amplified player. If you move the Sub to another room, you can easily reconfigure the audio and room association settings.

Note: Make sure all of your Sonos components have the latest software update installed.

Ethernet & AC Power: The Sub has only two connections, both located on the bottom of the enclosure: the power cord connection, and a single Ethernet port (RJ-45) for connecting the Sub to a wired home network.

Placement: Out of the box, the Sonos Sub is designed to stand upright on the integrated rubber feet. You can also lay the sub horizontally on its side, if desired. Four self-adhesive felt feet are provided, if you choose to mount the Sub on its side. A guide for placing the felt feet on the Sub is included.

Home Network Requirements: To access Internet music services, Internet radio, and any digital music stored on your computer or Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device, your home network must meet the following requirements:

  • High-speed DSL/Cable modem, or fiber-to-the-home broadband connection for proper playback of Internet-based music services. If your Internet service provider only offers Satellite Internet access, you may experience playback issues due to fluctuation in download rates.
  • If your modem is not a modem/router combination and you want to take advantage of Sonos' automatic online updates, or stream music from an Internet-based music service, you must install a router in your home network. If you don't have a router, you will need to purchase and install one before setting up your system.
  • If you are going to use a Sonos controller application on an Android smartphone, iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or other tablet, you will need a wireless router in your home network.
  • Connect at least one Sonos component to your home network router using an Ethernet cable, and then you can add other Sonos components wirelessly. Or setup your Sonos component wirelessly via WiFi without any hardwire connection.
  • For best results, you should connect the computer or NAS drive that contains your personal music library collection to your home network router using an Ethernet cable.
Note: Although Sonos is compatible with most networking equipment, some network devices are incompatible. Usually when networking hardware does not work with Sonos, it's because it lacks support for the network protocols that Sonos uses to operate, like UPnP, STP, and SMB/CIFS. Click here for a list of networking equipment that is incompatible with Sonos; be aware that the majority of this list is made up of older networking equipment, but may still exist as part of a home network.

Customer Q&A

2 questions already asked

Q
Will this work if laid flat say under a couch?
shane  Sep 23, 2015
4 answers
A
I wouldn't recommend it. I'm sure it'll still make noise in that arrangement, but I doubt it would sound as great as it does in typical setup. If you were going to lay it flat, you'd want to attach some kind of feet to the side it's on to isolate it from the floor. Heat dissipation with the built-in amp could be another issue with putting it in a confined space. It doesn't have forced cooling, so it also might not cool itself as well on its side. Lastly, this thing looks awesome; why would you want to hide it under a couch?
todd  Sep 25, 2015
A
I think it will but not as effective. Give SONOS a call directly for advice if that is your only option before you buy it.
vincent  Sep 24, 2015
A
This will not fit under my couch. Way too big for that.
tim  Sep 24, 2015
A
Yes! Doesn't matter - great sound anyplace

Q
Do you need to have this connected to the home router? I just want it to be used with the soundbar

Jeff - So sorry for the delay. I have this currently connected to a wireless router. Looks like this is what will be required to run this Sub. I hope this helps.
brandan  Feb 23, 2014
A
The sound bar can be paired with the sub for "3.1" surround sound. It must be connected to the sonos network and thus indirectly to the router. It does not need to be physically connected to the router.
michael  Jan 30, 2014
A
No, you do not need to connect it to the router. Only 1 Sonos device (Play 5 or Bridge and perhaps others) needs to connect to the router.
john  Jan 30, 2014
A
I tried, but I was told when calling Sonus that I needed a Sonus Bridge. So I got one. The system works fine.
william h  Jan 30, 2014
A
It will connect to your Sonos system, but will only be used with the soundbar. You will select the way it's used during set-up. Sonos set-up is step by step and very easy to understand.
julian  Jan 29, 2014
A
It connects wirelessly with the rest of your Sonos components. If the only other Sonos comp you have is the sound bar, you need a wireless bridge to tie it to your wifi. Or, if you have any other Sonos comp connected directly by Ethernet to your route that works, too. The Sub only needs to be plugged into AC power to work.
michael b  Jan 29, 2014
A
The sub is completely wireless with the exception of AC power. It can be placed anywhere.
eric  Jan 29, 2014
A
I have connected the soundbar to the home router via the sonos bridge...the sub is configured and used with the soundbar and is grouped together...hope that helps..
sitaram  Jan 29, 2014
A
No you can just add it to the play bar.
paul  Jan 29, 2014
A
The Sonos Sub will connect to the Playbar wirelessly through your wireless network. Just plug it in anywhere in the room and the Sonos App will guide you through the setup pairing it with the Playbar.
kelly  Jan 29, 2014
A
no - just pug it in the wall and its wireless from there. you might need their bridge unit which does hook into the router but i think they give that to you at nocharge. sounds great - i got the sound bar first and the sub really adds to it. i plan on adding 2 singles later to create a full surround.
