More details on the Kenwood KMD-D400
Product Research
Features:
General Overview: This unit is an in-dash, single-DIN size, passive 3+1 MD player that must be used with a compatible Kenwood changer controller head unit. Features such as intro-scan, random, direct track access from remote, etc. are all controlled by, and depend on, the capabilities of the head unit. This in-dash MD changer can be mounted as an I, E or J size, so it can be mounted along with a compatible Kenwood changer controller in a double-DIN dash opening (as per install guide). Also, the unit can be mounted in our standard DIN under dash mounting kit. When used with Pre 1994 head units, it must be used with the optional 113CASD200 adapter.
3+1 MD Capacity: Three MDs can be loaded and stored in this unit, and a fourth MD can be inserted for immediate playback. When a fourth MD is in the unit, the other MDs cannot be selected for playback.
Flip-down, Removable Face: The faceplate flips downward to expose the MD slot and the eject buttons. The face can be removed to deter theft.
Display: The display has white, blue, amber and green indicators and characters. The display includes a title display line, an 11 band spectrum analyzer, a demo indicator, a menu indicator, a disc indicator and disc number indicators. The title display line displays disc titles, track titles and the selected spectrum analyzer name. There are 9 spectrum analyzer display patterns (user selectable) and a mode which cycles through each of the 9 patterns for five seconds each; the spectrum analyzer may be turned off. All track indications, time, etc appear on the controller unit's display, not this unit's display.
Note: The display works in all modes (CD, Radio, Tape, etc) as long as:
- the input harness is connected to the front left and right speaker outputs of the head unit.
- there is output to the front speaker outs of the controller head unit. If the head unit is a preamp only unit, or if the fader is turned all the way to the rear, the display will not function.
Title Scrolling: You may set the unit for automatic or manual scrolling of MD titles.
Spectrum Analyzer Level Adjustment: You can adjust the spectrum analyzer level. Note that this does not "dim" the display, it simply causes the analyzer to become more sensitive and occupy more of the display.
Contrast Level Adjustment: The contrast level of the title display line and indicators may be adjusted for optimum viewing. Contrast adjustments do not affect the spectrum analyzer.
Selectable Button Illumination: The button illumination may be set to green or amber.
Controls and Technical Information:
Controls: The only controls on this unit are the display button, three eject buttons on the front panel (behind the face), and an "O-N" switch on the front panel (behind the face).
Compatibility with Multi-changer Switcher: This unit can be used with the optional KCA-S210A changer switching unit (item 113KCAS210) allowing you to connect this unit and another changer to a Kenwood changer control head unit. For instance, you could mount this unit and a Kenwood cassette player equipped with changer controls in a double-DIN dash opening, and you could control a trunk mounted Kenwood CD changer. When used with the KCA-S210A adapter, the "O-N" switch of this unit must be placed in the "O" position.
Wiring: There is a 22" standard Kenwood round 13-pin male DIN cable attached to the back of the unit. There is also a harness with 22" left and right, positive and negative speaker INPUT wires. These wires should be connected to the head unit's left and right speaker outputs so that the unit will receive an input signal for the spectrum analyzer. Note that if the speaker input wires are not connected, or connected incorrectly, this unit's spectrum analyzer will not display.
"O-N" Switch: There is an O-N switch on the front panel of the unit. When used with a Kenwood head unit equipped with a O-N switch this should be set to N. If the head unit does NOT have an O-N switch, this unit must be set to O. When the "O-N" switch is set to "O", MD text cannot be shown on the display of the controlling head unit.
