About the MTX Thunder6000 T6124A

Steven Johnson
Bruising bass in an eye-catching package — that's what MTX's Thunder6000 series T6124A 12" subwoofer is all about. A spun aluminum coating gives the injection-molded poly cone a sleek, armored look. The cone's 8 stiffening ribs reinforce the structure for when you unleash those punishing power surges.

The one-piece NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) gasket/surround creates a tight seal for superior sonic accuracy and greater overall durability. An oversized magnet structure and 2" four-layer voice coil deliver blazing lows, while the Spider Plateau Venting cools the speaker.

Enclosure Compatibility

Features

NBR Surround: The woofer is made with a one-piece NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) surround and gasket combination.  When bottom-mounting the woofer, the one-piece surround and gasket make an air-tight seal, to prevent any loss of performance due to air leaks around the woofer.  When the woofer is top-mounted, the one-piece surround and gasket combination enhances the overall cosmetic appearance of the woofer. NBR has the added benefit of being resistant to ozone and UV rays for extreme durability.

Mica-filled Polypropylene Cone: The woofer cone is made of Mica-filled poly with a bright aluminum finish and 8 stiffening ribs for improved cone stiffness and higher mechanical power handling.  Concentric rings are molded into the cone and dust cap surfaces to give them a machined appearance. The "MTX Audio" is embossed on the poly dust cap.

Asymmetrical Linear Drive: This system improves linearity and permits high output with low distortion.

Spider Plateau Venting: Heat from the voice coil is vented through metal-mesh covered vents that surround the back of the spider.

Enclosure Compatibility: This woofer can provide extended bass in sealed, vented and bandpass enclosures (see below for more information on enclosures).

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by MTX range from 1.0 cu/ft to 2.0 cu/ft.  The sealed enclosure MTX highlights on their spec sheet is a 1.25 cu/ft enclosure, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: The vented box sizes recommended by MTX range from 2.0 cu/ft to 3.0 cu/ft.  The vented enclosure MTX highlights on the woofer specification sheet is a 2.0 cu/ft enclosure, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield.  One 4" diameter x 15" long port should be used with a 2.0 cu/ft enclosure; a 2.0 cu/ft enclosure with a 4"x 15" port has a tuning frequency of 32 Hz.

Recommended Single Reflex Bandpass Volume: The bandpass box sizes recommended by MTX range from 1.79 cu/ft to 3.46 cu/ft.  MTX highlights two bandpass enclosures on the woofer specification sheet.  One highlighted enclosure has an "S" value of 0.5, and the other highlighted enclosure has an "S" value of 0.6.  The highlighted bandpass enclosure with an "S" value of 0.5 is a 2.03 cu/ft enclosure, with a sealed chamber volume of 0.65 cu/ft, a vented chamber volume of 1.17 cu/ft and (2) 4" diameter x 8.25" long ports.  The enclosure with an "S" value of 0.6 is a 2.79 cu/ft enclosure, with a sealed chamber volume of 0.79 cu/ft, a vented chamber volume of 1.69 cu/ft and (3) 4" diameter x 10" long ports.

Note: The bandpass enclosure with the higher "S" value produces a more narrow bandwidth with better transient response; the enclosure with the lower "S" value produces a wider bandwidth at the expense of transient response.
