About the Sony KV-36XBR800

Steve Kindig
The KV-36XBR800 is one of Sony's highest-performing Hi-Scan™ TVs. This stylish 36-incher comes loaded with innovative technology that will enhance your viewing for years to come, from regular TV shows and VHS tapes all the way up to today's best video sources — HDTV and progressive-scan DVD.

You get a total of 7 A/V inputs, including two "wide-bandwidth" component video inputs. You can use one component video input to hook up a separate HDTV tuner, and the other to connect and enjoy maximum performance from a progressive-scan or standard DVD player. When it comes to HDTV sources, the KV-36XBR800 is compatible with both 1080i and 720p signals (720p is converted to 1080i — a big advantage, as many TVs must downconvert 720p to 480p). And thanks to this XBR's HD Detailer™ wideband video amplifier, you'll experience for yourself all the breathtaking color, detail, and dimensionality HDTV has to offer. A DVI digital input is also included for greater compatibility with future HDTV tuners — especially tuners that receive satellite and/or cable HDTV signals.

While over 90% of U.S. households have access to at least one digital TV signal, most of us will continue to watch regular analog material for a while, too. Sony's solution is to combine a standard 4:3 aspect ratio screen with their ingenious 16:9 Enhanced viewing mode. 16:9 Enhanced mode engages automatically when the TV senses a widescreen source — HDTV broadcasts and "anamorphic" DVDs are displayed in a 16:9 window. This approach preserves maximum picture detail on widescreen formats because all of the TV's scanning lines are concentrated in the 16:9 window and none are wasted on the non-usable portion of the screen (the black bars above and below the picture area).

Each year, Sony's Digital Reality Creation™ digital upconversion circuitry has gotten a little better at enhancing picture quality and reducing the visibility of horizontal scan lines. It's a way to bridge the gap between conventional analog video signals and HDTV. DRC has always done a superb job with DVD. Now their latest version, DRC Multifunction V1, gives you better results than ever with lower-quality signals like cable TV and VHS tapes. You can fine-tune the level of DRC picture enhancement to match your personal preference and the quality of the input source, storing your own custom settings for easy adjustment. It's one of the best new features on this XBR!

If you own a Sony Memory Stick® digital camera, you'll love the fact that the KV-36XBR800 has a front-panel Memory Stick slot to let you easily view your digital photos on a big 36" screen — much closer to life-size than a computer monitor!

Features

Flat Screen: Sony's flat glass panel delivers images that are virtually distortion free and helps to eliminate screen glare.

Hi-Scan 1080i Display (HDTV Receiver Compatible): Two component video inputs allow you to connect an optional HDTV receiver or a source with component video outputs. This television is capable of receiving 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i digital TV formats.

CineMotion 3/2 Pulldown Processing: This function provides an optimized display by automatically detecting film content and applying a reverse 3/2 pulldown process. Moving pictures will appear clearer and more natural-looking.

16:9 Enhanced Mode (V-Compression): This set uses a special technique that gives you maximum picture quality when using anamorphic sources, such as some DVDs. When using an anamorphic source, the height of each scanning line is compressed for 33% better resolution, giving you the benefit of all 480 scanning lines. This mode can be set manually or automatically.

Digital Reality Creation Multifunction V1: Unlike conventional line doublers, the DRC Multifunction feature replaces the signal's NTSC waveform with the near-HD equivalent, while doubling the number of vertical and horizontal lines. This results in four times the density for quality sources, such as DVD, satellite, and digital camcorders. The Video Menu allows you to select interlaced, progressive, or CineMotion output. The DRC Palette option lets you customize the level of detail (Reality) and smoothness (Clarity) to create up to three custom palettes.

HD Detailer Wideband Video Amplifier: All televisions have a video amplifier, the device that takes the original video source and "amplifies" it to deliver a useable signal to your television screen. The bandwidth rating of a video amplifier determines the amount of detail that can be displayed on a television. Sony's HD Detailer wideband video amplifier delivers great detail on even the finest images by getting the most out of high-bandwidth sources, such as the 1080i signal available from some set-top boxes and satellite feeds.

10-bit 3D Digital Comb Filter: Sony's 10-bit 3D digital comb filter analyzes picture information horizontally, vertically and over time. You will get high resolution under most picture conditions. 10-bit signal processing renders superb gray-scale gradation, resulting in superior picture detail.

ClearEdge VM Velocity Modulation Scanning: This system separates the object and its background, producing clearer edges, better picture depth and improved overall picture quality. You can select High, Medium, Low, or Off.

Dynamic Focus Circuitry: This Dynamic Focus Circuitry adjusts the picture during each scanning line for consistent corner-to-corner sharpness.

Dynamic Picture Processor: The Dynamic Picture Processor maintains image detail in the very bright and dark areas of each scene.

Twin View: Using the Multi-Image Driver, Twin View allows you to watch two programs side-by-side with the ability to zoom in on one picture and listen to the program in the selected window. You can watch pictures from two different sources (1080i, 720p, 480p, or 480i) simultaneously. Note: Only the left Twin View window can display 1080i, 720p, and 480p sources.

Favorite Channel Preview: This feature allows you to preview up to 8 favorite channels without leaving the current channel.

Scrolling Channel Index System: The system splits the screen into one main picture and four smaller pictures that automatically scroll through all the available channels.

Freeze Function: This function allows you to temporarily capture a program's picture. The TV switches to Twin View mode and displays the "frozen" picture on the right, while the current program continues on the left. This function only works in normal view mode; if you are in Twin View mode already, it will not work.

Video Mode: You can select Vivid, Standard, Movie, or Pro. The Vivid setting enhances picture contrast and sharpness. The Standard setting displays a standard picture for normal viewing environments. The Movie setting displays a finely detailed picture for low light environments. The Pro setting displays a picture with minimum enhancements.

Steady Sound: This feature stabilizes the volume level, preventing unwanted blasts of sound during commercials.

Sound Effects: To enhance the sound, you can select TruSurround, which adds a three-dimensional sound to stereo programs, or Simulated, which adds a surround-like effect to mono-channel programs. The sound effects can be turned off.

Parental Control: V-Chip technology allows you to block unsuitable programming for younger viewers. Blocked programs are protected by a 4-digit password.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 15, 30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes.

Timers: This unit has two timers that can be set by day, time, duration, and channel.

Memory Stick Playback (JPEG): This television has a front-panel Memory Stick slot to let you easily view your JPEG images. You can choose from an index of the images stored on the Memory Stick, or you can run a slideshow of those images. You can also customize the features of the slideshow by selecting the length of time that each image is displayed, toggling the display of file information, and rotating each image. Note: The TV's Memory Stick viewer is compatible with Memory Sticks up to and including 128MB. It is not compatible with Memory Sticks that exceed 128MB.

Remote Control

Flip/Joystick Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of A/V components, including VCRs, satellite receivers, cable boxes, DVD players, and Laserdisc players. Several controls are located under a lid that covers the top half of the remote. A joystick allows you to move the on-screen selector, making menu navigation simple and efficient. The jump, enter, volume, channel, and numeric keypad buttons glow in the dark (blue).
