Inputs and Outputs Notes
Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration (MCACC): The Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration system allows you to manually calibrate the listening area and setup the receiver to your liking using a series of test tones. After entering the speaker size and distance data, the receiver will play test tones from each channel, allowing you to set the level of each speaker and the channel delay relative to the the left front speaker output. In addition, you can set separate channel levels and store them for different listening modes if desired.
DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 Decoding: This unit is equipped to decode DTS-ES software. You get 6.1-channel home theater, including a discrete "back surround" channel for even stronger three-dimensional effects. With 100 watts x 5 channels of built-in power, you can drive your front, center and surround home theater speakers with this receiver. The back surround channel has a preamp output only, and will require an additional amplifier. Note: This receiver cannot decode DTS 96/24.
Dolby Digital EX Decoding: Similar to DTS-ES, Dolby Digital EX offers 6.1-channel home theater sound, including a "matrixed" back surround channel preamp output.
Stereo/Direct Mode: In the Stereo mode, you'll hear the source through the left and right front speakers (and subwoofer if connected). Dolby Digital and DTS multi-channel sources are downmixed to stereo, and you can still use the Midnight, Loudness and Tone control functions. When switched to Direct mode, you will bypass all effects and surround settings, so the audio remains as close to the source audio signal as possible.
Standard Surround Modes: The Standard Surround Mode options are used to decode Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby Surround sources. Other options can add multi-channel sound to regular stereo sources. The Standard Surround modes include:
- Dolby Digital
- Dolby Digital EX
- DTS
- DTS ES
- Dolby Pro Logic
- Dolby Pro Logic II Movie
- Dolby Pro Logic II Music
- Neo:6 Cinema
- Neo:6 Music
Advanced Surround Modes: The Advanced Surround modes are designed to be used with multi-channel surround audio/video sources. The Advanced Surround modes include:
- Music: Simulates the acoustic environment of a large concert hall and is suitable for music sources.
- Movie: Simulates the relaxed environment of a movie theater and is suitable watching movies.
- TV Surround: Produces surround sound for both mono and stereo TV sources; useful for older movies with mono soundtracks.
- Sports: Designed for sports programs with a lot of action, it adds excitement by bringing background action to the forefront.
- Game: Useful when playing video games and works well with sound moving from left to right in game software with a lot of movement.
- Expanded: This mode is designed to give sound depth to stereo sources. The overall effect builds a dynamic and broad sound field, allowing a 2-channel signal to faithfully imitate a five-speaker sound (or 6 speakers if using separate amp and surround back speaker). You can use this mode with Dolby Pro Logic sources.
- 6-Channel Stereo: Used to output a stereo source from all the connected surround speakers.
- Phones Surround: When listening through headphones, you can hear the effect of overall surround sound.
5.1-Channel Input: In addition to the built-in Dolby Digital, DTS and DTS-ES processing, this unit also has a 5.1-channel input for use with external multi-channel decoders. The 5.1-channel input can accept left front, right front, center, left surround, right surround, and subwoofer signals.
Surround Back Channel Modes: You can select Auto, On or Off for the Surround Back channel preamp output. The Auto setting provides audio from the SB channel only when playing 6.1-encoded sources. When the setting is switched to "On", audio is generated from the SB channel for 6.1- and 5.1-channel Dolby Digital and DTS sources. You can switch the SB channel off if the multi-channel source sounds better in the 5.1 format for which it was originally encoded.
Virtual Surround Back: If you do not have a surround back amp and speaker connected, you can select a Virtual Surround Back mode (VSB) to hear a virtual back channel through your surround speakers. Like the Surround Back Channel modes, you can select VSB Auto, VSB On or VSB Off.96kHz/24-bit Audio D/A Conversion: This unit will accept and play 96kHz/24 bit linear PCM digital audio.
Midnight Listening Mode: The Midnight Listening mode preserves the dynamic range and full intelligibility of a movie sound track, while reducing the peak volume level.
Component Video Switching: In addition to composite video and S-video switching, this unit can switch between two component video sources. There are 2 component video inputs and 1 component video monitor output; each input and output has jacks labeled "Y", "Pb" and "Pr". This feature allows you to connect, and switch between, high resolution video sources equipped with component video outputs. The bandwidth of the component output is 28MHz.
Crossover Frequency Setting: You can select the crossover frequency from 100Hz, 150Hz or 200Hz. This setting will filter out the low frequencies from any speaker designated as "small" in the setup, and send it to those speakers designated as "large" and to the subwoofer.
Display Dimmer: The display brightness may be set to one of three levels, or it may be turned off (display of volume level stays on).
Sleep Timer: You can set the receiver to turn itself off automatically after a preset amount of time. You can set the sleep timer to 30, 60 or 90 minutes.
Signal Select: If a component is hooked up to the receiver using both digital and analog connections, you can select the input you wish to use. For example, you can select the analog, digital or 5.1-channel input for a DVD player, if all connections are made.
Multibrand Remote: The VSX-D712 comes with a powerful remote that is programmed to control not only the receiver's functions, but also most popular brands of audio and video equipment, including DVD players, CD players/recorders, MD players/recorders, cassette decks, televisions, cable boxes, VCRs, satellite receivers and other home-theater equipment.
Assignable Digital Inputs: The rear panel digital inputs (Optical 1, Coaxial 1 & 2) can be "assigned" to a specific component, so that when that component is selected, the receiver automatically switches to the digital input setting. The component choices include: DVD, TV, CD, CDR, VCR and OFF. Note: You cannot assign a component to more than one digital jack.
Assignable Component Video Inputs: The two component inputs can be assigned to a specific component. The choices are DVD, TV, VCR and OFF.
Front Panel Inputs: The VSX-D712 offers an analog audio input, as well as composite and S-Video inputs. These are located behind a flip-down panel.
Speaker Terminals: Binding post outputs are used for all speakers. The posts are not 5-way binding posts, because each post has a plastic collar that prevents use with spade lugs and they are spaced too far apart to use dual banana plugs.
Front Speaker Outputs: This receiver has A and B front speaker terminals internally wired in parallel. You can select A, B, or A+B speakers from the receiver's front panel.
Multi-Channel Analog Input: If you want to use a separate component for decoding DVDs (such as a DVD-Audio player), you can connect the decoder or a DVD player with multi-channel analog outputs to the "DVD 5.1-Channel (analog) Input" located on the back panel.
Control Out Jacks: The receiver has a Mini-jack output for connecting the receiver to the control in jack on other Pioneer components to transfer remote control signals. The Pioneer VSX-D712K replaces these items
