About the Onkyo TX-SR500
Onkyo's powerful TX-SR500 delivers all the high-impact excitement and realistic three-dimensionality that Dolby® Digital and DTS® have to offer. Quality amplification is key. Not only does the TX-SR500 give you 65 watts x 5 channels, but it features Onkyo's high-current Wide Range Amplifier Technology (WRAT) to maximize signal accuracy with high-res sources like DVD-Audio and SACD. And its oversized internal components and anti-resonant chassis are critical when Dolby Digital's dynamic peaks start rocking your home theater.
An advanced 24-bit Crystal processor provides precise decoding for all 5.1-channel sources. And Dolby® Pro Logic II lets you transform stereo and Dolby Surround-encoded sources into convincing 5.1-channel sound. You also get 9 DSP modes that let you enhance your movies and music with the ambience of your choice. And Onkyo's CinemaFILTER adjusts the tonal balance of soundtracks mixed for movie theaters, for optimal playback in home theater settings.
The TX-SR500 also provides three digital inputs, plenty of ins and outs for all your analog sources, a 5.1-channel analog input for multichannel audio, and a front-panel A/V input with S-video for quick hookup of a camcorder or other portable device. Two sets of main speaker outputs let you hook up stereo speakers in two rooms.

Inputs and Outputs
WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.
24-bit/96kHz Digital-to-Analog Decoding: This receiver is equipped to decode 24-bit/96kHz PCM digital signals for playback of high-resolution recordings.
Adjustable Crossover: This receiver has a built-in high pass crossover for the satellite speakers. The frequencies that you can choose from are: 80, 100, and 120Hz. Using this feature determines the size of your main speakers. If you set the crossover at 120Hz, the receiver will assume that you have small speakers. For floor speakers or larger bookshelf speakers, use the 80Hz cross-over point to start.
Subwoofer Mode Button: Using this button allows you to filter off bass information from speakers that may not be able to handle that information, and direct that information to a powered subwoofer. There are four modes:
- Mode 1: Low frequency information is filtered off of all channels and sent to the subwoofer.
- Mode 2: Low frequency information is filtered off of the center and surround sound speakers and sent to the subwoofer.
- Mode 3: Low frequency information from the LFE channel of a 5.1 channel source is sent to the subwoofer.
- Off: No subwoofer being used.
Assignable Digital Inputs: Allows you to tell the unit which input source is connected to which digital input jack.
DVD (5.1 Multi-Channel) Input: The DVD input on this receiver also doubles as a 5.1 multi-channel input, which can be used for future 5.1 channel decoders, DVD-Audio players, and SACD players. The input consists of left front, right front, center, left surround, right surround and subwoofer RCA inputs. Note: If you choose to hook a stereo source to this input, just use the left and right stereo RCA inputs.
Listening Modes:
- Stereo: All input is sent to the left and right front speakers.
- Direct: For purest sound and minimal sound adjustments and filtration, this mode sends all sound is directly sent to the front left and right speakers only, past all the internal processors, and no sound is sent to the subwoofer.
- Dolby Pro Logic II: Pro Logic II is a new Dolby Laboratories technology that produces surround sound from any stereo source, including CDs, VHS tapes, TV shows, digital audio files like MP3 and AAC, cassette tapes, and FM radio broadcasts. Like Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II has stereo surround output, giving you a more realistic surround sound experience. Unlike Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II allows you to enjoy a "5.1-like" presentation using any analog stereo source. There are two Pro Logic II modes, which have been designed to ensure optimal playback of movie soundtracks and music-only sources; you may select Pro Logic II Movie or Pro Logic II Music to match the type of audio being decoded.
- Dolby Digital Surround: standard Dolby Digital with up to 5.1 channels
- DTS: standard DTS with up to 5.1 channel surround output
- Orchestra: This mode is best suited for classical and opera music. The center channel is turned off and the surround channels are emphasized to widen the stereo image. This will simulate the natural reverberation created in a large concert hall.
- TV Logic: The TV Logic Mode offers the acoustics of a TV program being aired in the studio. It enhances the entire surround sound field and clarity of conversation.
- Unplugged: This mode is suitable for acoustic instrument sounds, vocals, and jazz music. By emphasizing the front stereo image, it simulates the acoustics encountered at stage front.
- Studio-Mix: This mode is for rock and pop music. Playing music in this mode will give you a lively soundfield with a powerful acoustic image that will make you feel like you are in a club.
- All Ch Stereo: This mode can only be used with 2 channel sources and is designed for playing background music. The front, surround and surround back channels create a stereo image that encompasses the entire area.
Speaker Set-up: Sets up delay time for the center and surround speakers for proper surround sound playback based on the distances and locations of the main speakers in your system. See chart in owner's manual for more details
- Center Speaker: delay can be set from 0 to 5 milliseconds
- Surround Speakers: delay can be set from 0 to 15 milliseconds
CinemaFILTER Circuitry: This circuitry provides a subtle high-frequency rolloff for proper playback of soundtracks in the home. This feature provides the means to easily remove excess treble response from soundtracks that were originally equalized to sound best in a large theater. This function only works in the Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II Movie, DTS surround modes.
"Late Night" Feature: The "Late Night" feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings that have been encoded with dynamic range data. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume control setting that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to Dolby Digital recordings encoded with dynamic range data without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: "Off", "Low", and "High". Note: This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.
Sleep function: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90 minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10 minute increments.
Display Dimmer: Allows you to set the display illumination to normal, dark or very dark.
B Speaker Outputs Powered by Surround Amps: The B speaker outputs are powered by the left channel and right channel surround amplifiers. Since the B speaker outputs are powered by the surround channel amplifiers, the surround modes cannot be selected when the B speaker outputs are being used. If you select the B speakers while using one of the DSP modes, the surround mode will be cancelled. Note: The minimum impedance for speaker B is 6 Ohms.
Multibrand Remote: The supplied wireless remote is a multibrand/learning remote. The remote is pre-programmed to operate Onkyo CD, DVD, MD, and cassette players. In addition, the remote is pre-programmed to operate other popular brands of equipment including DVD players, VCRs, and televisions.
Note: Onkyo made a running change in the model of remote being included with this receiver. Although the RC-478M remote is shown in the receiver's instruction manual, the remote included with the receiver is model RC-518M. A separate four page manual, specific to the RC-518M remote, is included with the receiver.
