Satellite radio tuners for the car
If you want to add satellite radio to your car stereo system, you first need to decide if you are keeping your existing stereo, or if would you prefer a new, satellite radio-equipped in-dash receiver.

Satellite radio tuners for factory stereos
If you want to add satellite radio to your factory stereo, the easiest way is to use a plug-and-play tuner with the appropriate car kit. There are 4 ways to connect a plug-and-play satellite radio tuner to your factory stereo — cassette adapter, wireless FM transmitter, wired FM modulator, or auxiliary input. See the chart below for details on installation and sound quality issues associated with each method.

Cassette Adapter Wireless FM Transmitter Wired FM Modulator Auxiliary Input
Installation Easy Easy More difficult —
you have to remove the radio to access the FM antenna connection on the rear of the receiver; requires power and ground connections
Moderate —
you have to remove the radio to access the auxiliary input on most radios; most factory radios do not have auxiliary inputs
Sound Quality Fair Fair —
susceptible to interference
Moderate —
as good as your best FM station

"Satellite radio-ready" in-dash receivers
Many aftermarket receivers now include built-in controls for an external satellite radio tuner. If you're thinking of upgrading your car stereo, look for one that has built-in XM or SIRIUS controls, add an external tuner and an antenna, and you'll be able to use your new stereo to surf satellite radio. Best of all, you'll be able to use your new receiver's sound shaping controls to improve the sound of the satellite signal in your car.

In-dash receivers with a built-in satellite radio tuner
There is currently just one in-dash receiver with a built-in satellite radio tuner — Alpine's CDA-9820XM has a built-in XM satellite radio tuner. All you have to do is add an antenna and you'll have XM in your dash.
