U - Shaft style U - Shaft style
"Shaft-style" receivers fit a "3-hole" dash opening. The large rectangular hole accommodates the "nosepiece" of the cassette receiver. The small round holes on either side of the nosepiece are for the shafts that hold the knobs.
E - Euro DIN style E - Euro DIN style
Modern Euro DIN-style receivers fit through a single rectangular hole in the dash. They mount from the front, sliding into a metal sleeve that attaches to the front of the dash.
I - ISO-DIN style I - ISO-DIN style
ISO DIN receivers attach to the factory radio's side-support system. The mounting sleeve and trim ring that come with the receiver are not used.
J - ISO-DIN style with a wider control panel J - ISO-DIN style with a wider control panel
J-size receivers attach to the factory radio's side-support system. "J" receivers mount like a standard ISO DIN receiver (I-size), but have a wider control panel.
CG - GM/Chrysler Factory Style CG - GM/Chrysler Factory Style
These factory-style receivers fit the taller factory radio openings found in many GM and Chrysler vehicles. They are sometimes called "DIN-and-a-half" models. If you were to install a regular DIN-style receiver in the taller opening, you would need an installation kit with a trim piece to cover gaps above and below the trim panel. With a factory-style receiver, no installation kit is needed.
DD - Double DIN DD - Double DIN
Double DIN receivers are twice as tall as regular ISO-DIN-style receivers and usually house both a CD player and a cassette player. They fit many Japanese cars.

Tips on receiver size
  • Some receivers may be installed in two or three different styles. For example, many models come with the parts and screw holes to go in your dash as an "I" or as an "E."
  • Some older vehicles only take a shaft-style receiver.
  • Newer vehicles take DIN-style receivers. With the proper installation kit, a shaft-style receiver will go into a DIN-style opening.
