Zak and Dave, Crutchfield camera experts, share their impressions of Canon's EOS 40D digital SLR.

Zak: Hi, I'm Zak.

Dave: And I'm Dave.

Zak: And we're here today with the Canon 40D digital SLR. This is a newer model from Canon. It's got a magnesium alloy body. It's ruggedly constructed. It's fast and smooth to use, through the menus and focus and everything. It's got a nice big three-inch LCD screen on the back for reviewing your shots. And it shoots really, really fast for action stuff — 6.5 frames per second.

Dave: Oh, man. That is smokin'.

Zak: Check that out.

Dave: Yeah. That's a nice camera. It feels really good. It's got a nice sticky rubber grip. Solid body. Man, I love that kind of camera. You know, I'm looking at this Zak, and I notice on this mode dial on top here that I see a lot of familiar settings, like manual mode and shutter priority and portrait mode and things. But there's a few here that I'm not familiar with, labeled C1, C2, C3? Can you tell me something about that? I don't know what those are.

Zak: I love those, Dave. What they are is complete camera setup memories. So every setting that I would need to make a shot is saved on one of those three slots. For instance, I shot a wedding recently, and I was constantly going inside, outside, different lighting situations, different buildings — and I was able to pre-program exactly what I needed. That's ISO, white balance — all the fine settings that you would need. And each time I switched locations, I just twist the dial and I'm ready to shoot.

Dave: Oh man. Nice way to get to all your settings very fast.

Zak: Very fast, yeah.

Dave: Yeah, I like that. That's very convenient. Well, this is the Canon EOS 40D. It's available as you see it here, with a 28-135 image stabilizing Canon zoom lens for nice, sharp photos. And it also comes as a body only, for those of you who have a stable full of Canon lenses at home. And that is the Canon EOS 40D.
