Crutchfield experts Todd and Ken discuss some of the features that make Infinity Kappa Series car speakers such a popular choice in car audio.
Ken: Hi, I'm Ken.
Todd: And I'm Todd.
Ken: Today we're going to be looking at Infinity Kappa car speakers. You know, I've been in the car industry a while — car audio industry — and Kappas have always been a real touchstone, a really good, high-quality speaker from Infinity.
Todd: Yeah, these are definitely some of the higher-end, higher-quality, full-range car audio speakers that we carry. They incorporate a number of elements from their home speakers. One particular element that's worth pointing out is that these are actually 2-ohm design car speakers. Most car speakers that are full-range are 4-ohms. This is a 2-ohm design, which means basically that it pulls out more power from the amplifier or the head unit that you're drawing it from.
Ken: Right. More power equals better sound. It just works that way.
Todd: That's right.
Ken: One of the design features I like about this is the tweeter. The tweeter in this is a nice size, and it's a metal matrix dome. So it really radiates a lot of sound out. And in most models, you can rotate it, too. So when you rotate that, you can direct the highs — which are real directional — and get a perfect-sounding sweet spot, you know, right up there. So it feels like you're right in the middle of the audience.
Todd: So you can point up the highs from down in the doors to where your ears are.
Ken: Absolutely. Speakers aren't always where they really should be, and this will help compensate for that.
Todd: Now, what is this little button here on the tweeter?
Ken: That's a good question. If you don't like your highs too bright, or you know, you like them tamped down a little bit, this will attenuate it. It'll drop the highs 3 dBs. That's a pretty big drop. So you have even another level of customization with the highs.
Todd: Sure, sort of smooth it out a bit if you want to go that route.
Ken: Absolutely, it's just a matter of taste.
Todd: So another feature to point out here is called the Plus One woofer cone. What this is, is a design of the woofer that allows it to have 30% more surface area than another typical standard, in this case, 6" x 9" speaker. They do that a couple ways. It has a little bit deeper design of the cone here. This cone, by the way, is made out of woven glass fibers, which are very lightweight and yet very strong — which are the two key elements that you want in any sort of cone material. And then we also have a high-roll rubber surround here. Rubber's important. It's more durable than, say, a foam surround like you might find in a lot of factory speakers. And it also allows for greater excursion of the cone here. Basically, it allows it to move further out and further down, which gives you more sound and more power.
Ken: You hit them all on the head — a lot of excursion, lightweight, strong material — you'll get good mids and lows.
Todd: That's right.
Ken: I like the crossover that comes with this. You know, component speakers will come with external crossovers — high-quality capacitors and resistors — to make sure the highs get where they need to go and the lows where they need to. You don't see it too often that a full-range speaker like this will have an external crossover, and that has a big effect on how good the sound is.
Todd: Right. It basically says, okay woofer, you do what you were made to do best, and that's produce lows or mids. And tweeters, you do what you were made to do best, which is produce the highs. And so it separates out the frequencies like that.
Ken: Right, everything working in concert, just like a traffic cop, directing where it needs to go. These speakers are versatile.
Todd: They are. They can work well with either a factory stereo or an aftermarket car stereo. And they can certainly accept power from, you know, a factory head unit or even from an external amplifier.
Ken: Yeah, combined efficiency and good power handling, right?
Todd: That's right.
