Don't have a wired Ethernet connection where you need one? Belkin's Powerline AV+ can route Internet signals through your home's existing AC wiring.

Amanda: Hi. I'm Amanda.

Tara: And I'm Tara, and we're here in the Crutchfield video studio to talk about Belkin's Powerline AV+ system today. Now these days, aside from connecting your computer to the Internet, a lot of AV gear really benefit s from having an Internet connection. Some TVs are Internet-ready. Some devices let you stream movies straight from Netflix on your TV, and if you're into gaming, there are some online multi-player games that are pretty cool too.

Amanda: Yep. Exactly. But the problem is that in most homes these days, you don't necessarily have an Ethernet jack sitting, you know, right there behind your TV. And at the same time, maybe you have kind of a weak Wi-Fi signal -a little slow, a little laggy. Well that's where Belkin's Powerline AV+ comes in. It gives you the kind of strong, fast signal you'd get from a wired Ethernet connection, without having to run any new wires. That's because it actually uses your existing power lines to pass the Internet signal from your service provider to different rooms around your home.

Tara: Yeah. And we think this is really cool. And in fact, some of our co-workers here at Crutchfield took it home and tried it out. So what we're going to cover is what they found. Now this Belkin system comes with just about everything you need to get started. In fact, those co-workers of ours who tried this system out said they had it up and running in a matter of minutes. It was that simple. It's practically plug and play.

Amanda: Yeah, it really is easy to get up and running. All you've got to do is connect your modem from your service provider to your router, the same way you always would. And then you connect your router to this first adapter here. You can use one of the included Ethernet cables if you want to. And then this second adapter you can plug into a wall outlet that's up to 300 feet away from this first adapter here. And you can see on the bottom there are three Ethernet ports for connecting up to three different pieces of gear.

Tara: And it's going to give you a really reliable signal that's like having another wired connection in your home. It'll give you up to 200 Mbps.

Amanda: Really fast.

Tara: Which is way faster than what you're going to get from most Internet service providers. So it can really handle anything that you're going throw at it, whether you're downloading content from the Internet or streaming music and videos around your home network to your TV.

Amanda: Yep. Now one installation consideration that we wanted to pass on: these adapters need to plug directly into the outlet in your wall. They can't be plugged into power protection first. But you still want to make sure all the lines coming into your system are protected. So to do that you'll want to use a power protection unit that has Ethernet inputs and outputs built in, and you'll install that between the second adapter and your home theater gear.

Tara: Yeah, because it's really important to protect your home theater gear. Now to sum up, this system is great for just about anyone who wants an Internet connection in a room where they don't have one, whether it's because of Wi-Fi® interference or maybe they just don't have a wired Internet jack there.
