Yamaha

Our take on the Yamaha RX-797

Enjoy rich, natural sound with this capable stereo receiver from Yamaha. The RX-797 delivers 100 watts per channel of clean, room-filling power to your speakers, reproducing your music with authority. Plus you'll get advanced extras like XM Ready Satellite Radio capability and flexible multi-room options, complete with a remote for the 2nd listening room.

Yamaha's engineers have taken extensive care with every aspect of the RX-797's design and construction to maximize audio performance. The receiver incorporates high-current amplification to ensure dynamic, wide-range sound, with ample reserve power to handle demanding musical peaks. You can use its direct modes to bypass the tone, balance, and loudness controls — creating the purest possible sound and reducing potential interference with the audio signal. Plus the RX-797's solidly built chassis is designed to minimize any effects that internal or external vibration might have on sound quality.

The receiver's integrated AM/FM tuner provides 40 presets for quick access to all your favorite stations. And it comes "XM Ready," so it's easy to add exciting XM satellite radio programming to your system. Simply plug in an optional XM tuner kit and add an XM subscription to enjoy instant access to more than 170 digital channels of music, talk, news, and sports.

The '797 provides plenty of inputs for your audio/video gear and offers a separate subwoofer output that makes it easy to add a powered sub to your system. Dual-room/dual-source capability lets you and a housemate watch two different A/V sources simultaneously (TV, receiver, amplifier, or powered speakers required in second room). And a preamp-out/main-in loop keeps you ready for system expansion. You also get a multibrand remote that gives you easy control of your receiver and the other audio/video components in your system.

Highlights:

  • 100 watts x 2 (stereo) into 8 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at 0.019% THD

Audio Features

ToP-ART/High Current Amplification: Yamaha uses the ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design concept, which combines the latest and best technologies, parts, and circuit designs, to maximize sound quality. High Current Amplification uses superior quality components from input to output to achieve high current power with low impedance.

High-Quality Power Amplifier: With 100 watts of power per channel (at 8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.019% THD), the RX-797 delivers solid, reliable audio performance even when driving both A and B speaker systems at the same time.

Wide-range Frequency Response: The receiver's wide-range frequency response, 10Hz to 50kHz, allows you to enjoy the full fidelity of any source with two channel analog outputs.

Dual Zone Capability: The RX-797 allows you to play two different sources in two zones. The receiver has a pair of stereo preamp outputs and a composite video output for Zone 2. You can control the receiver from the second zone using the supplied zone 2 remote control when an infrared signal repeater system is used. A separate amplifier or stereo receiver with a pair of speakers, or a powered speaker system is required for zone 2.

Impedance Switch: The RX-797 has an impedance switch, allowing operation with 4 ohm speakers.

Loudness: The amount of loudness compensation is adjustable, using a rotary knob on the front panel.

CD Direct Amplification: The CD Direct Amp feature routes the CD signal directly to a specially built-in amplifier, bypassing the input selector, bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls. This eliminates any alteration to the CD signal and produces the purest possible sound.

Pure Direct: The Pure Direct feature bypasses the bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls for the best sound from any source.

Record Out Selector: This feature lets you listen to one source, while feeding a different source to the Tape/MD and VCR outputs for recording.

Speaker Terminals: All of the receiver's speaker terminals are binding posts. They are not 5-way binding posts because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and there is no good spot for a pin connector. Bare wire, single banana, and dual banana plugs are compatible.

Pre Out/Main In Loops: The left and right preamp outputs are connected to left and right main amp inputs, respectively, with "U" shaped metal jumpers. The jumpers may be removed to facilitate the connection of an equalizer or external amplifier.

Subwoofer: The RCA sub output voltage is 4 volts.

Phono: The RCA phono input is designed for moving magnet (MM) or high output moving coil (MC) turntable cartridges. If you have a low output MC cartridge an in-line boosting transformer or moving coil head amplifier is necessary.

Headphone Jack: The receiver has a standard 1/4" headphone jack on the front panel for private listening. When headphones are plugged in, the receiver's speaker output is not muted, so remember to turn the A and B speakers off.

Back-Up Memory: The unit is equipped with a back-up memory. This function provides approximately one week of memory storage when the power cord is disconnected.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer turns the receiver off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

Remote Control

RAX100 Remote Control: The main remote control can operate the receiver as well as other remote control capable components from Yamaha and other manufacturers. The remote is pre-programmed with control signals for other brand TVs, VCRs, and DVD players.

RAX17 Remote Control: The zone 2 remote control allows you to switch the second room output on and off, select the source, adjust the volume, and recall preset radio stations from the second room.

Remote Jack: The receiver has a mini-jack input and output for use with other compatible Yamaha components.

Add-on Devices

XM Satellite Ready: The optional XM Direct 2 Home Tuner (220XHD2H1, sold separately) lets you enjoy XM Satellite Radio through the XM-ready receiver. Simply connect the XM Direct 2 Home Tuner to the XM jack on back of the receiver, place and aim the included antenna for optimum reception, and you are ready to start enjoying commercial-free music, plus live sports, new, talk, and exclusive entertainment.

Note: In addition to the XM Direct 2 Home Tuner and the XM-ready receiver, you will need a subscription to XM Satellite Radio to receive XM programming.

The unit was shipped from Crutchfield very well and received in a timely fashion.
The sale price from Crutchfield was the Best on the Net !
The unit has a well built feel to the knobs and buttons, The layout of function is non complicated unlike some Yamaha HTR units but its not fair compare them to each other because they do different functions. It does less but it does what it was built for well !
This RX-797 unit has good usable power and a noticeable difference in quality of sound at high volumes when the cd direct mode is used.
This unit is a bit Bright in the mids for my taste but that can be dealt with.
The RX-797 is clearly at the top of the 2channel amps in this range of new receivers.

Yamaha RX-797

Written By Scott, jacksonville Fl on Sunday, September 26, 2010

I am so glad i got this. It sounds great and the separation of both speakers is also great. I have an Onkyo which is good but not like this unit. I also have a subwoofer to it and a eq and it just blew me away the difference the sound is compared to my Onkyo. I use to have a home theatre reciever years ago but now i don't really care i watch tv and the sound comes through the reciever and it sounds just great especially watching movies. It may not be surround sounds but still has the oomph you get in a theatre. I am glad i got this.

Overwhelmed

Written By Yamaha Dog, Chicago on Friday, December 24, 2010

I bought all other receivers before I bought this one because the Yamaha costed more.
In the end...the extra $$ paid are penauts compared to the sound improvement. The
tone flexibility on this unit is out of this world. I can't say enough. I own vintage 70s
Pioneer receivers as well and I must say that i don't miss those units with the Yamaha
playing. Thinking about buying another one for another room...

Regarding the Yamaha RX - 797

I recently ordered a pair of Infinity P162 loudspeakers and decided to match them with the
Yamaha RX - 797 stereo receiver. I am quite pleased with all that I've been hearing. I delight
in the fact that I can hear not only many things that I never noticed before, but the symbols on
a drum kit can be heard loud and clear on several CD tracts ( such as Led Zepplin 2). I'm
glad that I placed this order. I'm greatful for the friendly advice and expertize that I received
from the techs that I spoke to. If I'd purchased this gear from another source, I'd most likely
would have paid twice as much...my wallet smiles. If I ever need to replace any of my gear or
simply want to upgrade ??, I will give Crutchfield a call.

Nothing but 5 star.

Written By Paul, Woodstock, VA on Saturday, January 29, 2011

I have had this receiver for approx. 18 months and it rocks. I am pushing 4 12" 3 ways, a pair of sony book shelf speakers, and a Yamaha SW315 250 watt sub. It literally blows the place away when I'm in the mood. Any type of music is such a pleasure to listen to. Even at low volume, many friends have commented on the rich flawless sound. Classical or rock, or anything in between it performes perfectly. I replaced a Yamaha amp I purchased in 1981 that was 80 watts per channel, and yes it still works and gave it to my Daughter and she listens to her stereo several times a week using the old amp and tuner. I am a Yamaha fan, only because they last and sound good for decades.

clean, tight, and neutral

Written By raimar, Washington DC on Monday, December 18, 2006

FAR BEYOND MY EXPECTATIONS:

I paired this unit with a pair of bookshelf B&W
speakers- and a Yamaha lower-end dvd player and
can't believe how good it sounds (I managed to
use my high-end SAE separates from the 1980s until
now ---finally broke down and got a receiver!)

The FM tuner (with the single-wire antenna) picks
up stations as far away as Baltimore with ease- again
very clean and easy on the ears.

Music now has that elastic, naturally bouncy
quality...very clean, tight, and neutral.

Rated power of 100 Watts is more than enough for
most. A setting of 3/10 will probably be uncomfortable
for most non-traumatized ears.

A Great Receiver/Amp

Written By CampSpringsJohn, Camp Springs, Ky on Monday, March 22, 2010

I am very pleased with this receiver! It produces a very clear sound that I have found hard to find with todays receivers. I use the THD (total harmonic distortion) as a gauge of quality. I love it. It also does an excellent job with both AM and FM reception. I am receiving stations I did not know I could. I'm receiving FM stations from 100 miles away with no outside antenna, and the AM side does not suffer from any interference from lights or the TV if it's turned on. I had to do some playing to figure out how to use my equalizer on it, but I did it, and works great.

BTW, my receiver does have an indicator on the volume knob. It does not have watt meters, which I was used to, but I can live without them.

I am so happy that this receiver is still sold. I had been looking for months and it is the only one that has a pre amp out and in. It works great and I figured out a way to use my equalizer with another set of speakers (Bose 251's) that can not run though the equalizer. I run the Pre-Amp through my Niles Audio TSB-3 Tape Switch Box. Care full if you do this because you get bad feedback if you don't leave one of the tape decks (#1 or #2) on play while switching over to the amp input for #1 or #2, even if the speakers are off. This receiver had more inputs than my old stereo with one input open still. I was disappointed that I could not use an 8-OHM speaker with a 4-OHM speaker at the same time, so my Bose speakers are no longer used. This receiver replaced my failing Onkyo TX-7000. It is 25 years old. The volume knob was wearing out and the quartz locked FM tuning was drifting.
I finally have a remote control for this receiver and it works through glass. The combination of using the Yamaha remote and the remote for the PC works great with enough power to fill the back yard and house.
I tried a record on the turntable and the sound through the RX-797 is better and stronger than the old Onkyo.
