Video Features

VideoD/A Converter: This unit uses a 54MHz/10-bit video digital-to-analog converter, which reduces digital artifacts for a better picture.

Video Connections: The Toshiba DR430 is equipped with the following video connections.

  • HDMI Output: The DR430 has a single HDMI output. You can set the HDMI output resolution to 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p.
  • A/V Outputs: The DVD audio/video outputs include a component video, composite video, and S-video output along with a pair of stereo RCA output terminals.
  • A/V Inputs: The DR430 features two sets of A/V inputs, one on the rear-panel and one on the front-panel, each featuring stereo RCA audio, as well as composite video and S-video jacks.

Progressive Scan: This unit may be set to output a progressive scan video signal from the Color Stream Pro component video output. Progressive-scan picture quality is more film-like, with more fine detail and less flicker. Progressive-scan viewing requires a TV with a progressive scan compatible component video input.

Video Output: You can set the DR430's video output to 4:3 Letter-Box, 4:3 Pan&Scan or 16:9 Wide to match the aspect ratio of your connected television.

Rapid Playback: This function is available only on disc recorded in the Dolby Digital format, and plays back in a slightly faster (1.3x) or slower speed (0.8x) while keeping the sound output.

Time Search: This feature allows you to go to a specific point on a disc by entering the exact amount of time you wish to skip in order to reach the point.

Black Level: You can adjust the black level to control the brightness of the picture in order to get a better picture.

Camera Angles: Some DVD-video discs have scenes shot from two or more angles to choose from.

Audio Features

Audio D/A Converter: The unit has a 192kHz/24-bit audio digital-to-analog converter for excellent audio reproduction.

Great recorder for the price

Written By Dave C., Galesburg, IL on Saturday, February 04, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

I use this unit to archive shows from my Directv DVR and also to record a popular automotive show from PBS radio every Saturday morning. It is relatively simple to operate and it actually has a plethora of features that I really never use but would probably be appreciated by some. This is actually my second DR430 and I purchased this one because of past good experiences with Toshiba DVD recorders.
Pros:
Price and ease of operation.
Cons:
I wish it had a digital tuner so I could record TV shows using my rooftop antenna.

Easy 480 DVD Recording

Written By Peanut, Anchorage, AK on Sunday, October 31, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

Very easy because it does NOT have a tuner, so there's less to mess with. The
only inputs are either RCA jacks or S-Video, so I've recorded 480 resolution,
but nothing more defined than that. Records in 61min, 2:02, 4:04, 6:06, or
8:08. Use DVD-R discs to record in 16:9 or 4:3 - this is good for recording
shows. Use DVD+R to record in only 4:3, but you can insert chapter marks
wherever you like, so this is good for recording sports because you can start a
chapter at each half-inning or quarter of the sporting event. I'd give this
unit 5 stars if it were able to record in more than 480, but it's limited by the
inputs. I'm very glad I own this unit - it's so easy and dependable.

The recorder works great. A little difficult to set up with other componets as the instructions
are a little misleading. The recorder is a little slow to respond to commands but something
you can live with.

manuals are very important!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bot the Toshiba DR430KU mainly to copy my 8 mm camcorder tapes via my 8mm vcr, to dvd's. I think it's doing the job ok, BUT. I wish it had an easier way to start titles and chapters (I still can't figure out how to start chapters where I want them to start), and I wish it came with a decent manual.

Hardware manufacturers don't seem to realize that the user manual represents their product. The product may be fine, but a lousy manual makes the user think the product is lousy. The dr430ku manual was obviously not written by people fluent in English, but that's ok. The problem is, the manual writers don't know how to explain how to use a product. It probably was written by engineers who know very well how to use the product, but don't realize they are explaining something to someone who's not familiar with the subject. (I'm a retired engineer--this was and still is a common problem..)

A poor replacement for a long-used, Samsung recorder.
Pros:
It functions. The manual is satisfactory. 1080P and HDMI work ok.
Cons:
Awkward & arduous method of naming DVD or CD ! No method of setting specific recording period, as with Samsung, resulting in having to use an extra two (2) hours at lower resolution for only a few extra minutes required for project . Erratic operation resulting in no action at times. No more Toshiba !!!

Too complicated to record

I was looking for something simple to record and back up my videos onto DVD. I started about 2 weeks ago and haven't finished even 1 yet. I recorded a tape, or thats what I think, but I cannot play it due to some finishing requirements that need to be done in order to play it on other devices. It is frustating and my wife wants me to return it. I'm not a electronics buff.
