Features

Overview: The Nikon D40kit includes the Nikon D40 digital SLR camera body and the Nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm Zoom- Nikkor ED lens. The kit also includes a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery pack with an AC quick charger adapter and a USB cable to connect the camera to your PC.

SLR: The Nikon D40 is a SLR digital camera that combines fast start up time with super-fast shutter response and rapid-action shooting at up to 2.5 frames per seconds. Images will be recorded in a 3:2 aspect ratio similar to a 35mm film camera.

LCD Monitor: The Nikon D40 has a 2.5" low-temperature polysilicon TFT LCD monitor featuring approximately 230,000 pixels and adjustable brightness (-2 to +2). The large 2.5-inch LCD monitor enables image preview at up to 19 times magnification and has large type fonts and easy-to view menus. The LCD screen also features three display options - Classic, Graphic, and Wallpaper to display the camera's shooting information. The wallpaper option gives you the ability to display the default picture or a picture of your choice in the background of the information display.

Optical Viewfinder: The D40 uses a fixed eye-level penta-Dach-mirror viewfinder with a diopter adjustment knob. By adjusting the diopter from -1.7 to +0.5m to suit your eyesight (with or without eyeglasses), the viewfinder image will look clearer. The bright and sharp viewfinder makes focusing in low-light situations possible. The viewfinder offers approximately 0.8x magnification with a 95% vertical and horizontal frame coverage.

Focusing Screen: The viewfinder uses a Type-B BriteView clear matte Mark V screen with superimposed focus brackets for clear and accurate focusing of your subject.

Optics: This camera features an AF-S DX 18-55mm Zoom-Nikkor ED lens. This DX lens design is compatible with every Nikon D-Series digital SLR camera. The lens features an exclusive Silent Wave Motor for high-speed auto-focusing with accuracy and super-quiet operation. The ultra-compact 3x zoom lens offers sharpness and versatility in a wide variety of shooting situations.

Image Sensor: The D40 features a 23.7 mm x 15.6 mm Nikon SLR DX format image sensor with a total pixel count of approximately 6.24 million pixels and an effective pixel count of approximately 6.1 million. Nikon SLR DX format image sensors incorporate individual micro-optics on each of the sensors pixels. Micro Optics construction ensures that the image from the camera's lens will be precisely aligned with each pixel's sensor and that performance will be optimized. Nikon's DX format CCD image sensor also delivers vivid color and sharp detail exceptional enough to provide detail enlargements of 16 x 20 inches and beyond. Its high resolution also provides the ability of creative cropping.

3-Area Autofocus: The D40's advanced 3-area AF system and its refined algorithms deliver fast, efficient and precise autofocusing. Its autofocusing system delivers greater precision with fast, more consistent subject acquisition and improved focus tracking for consistently sharper pictures.

3D Color Matrix Metering II System: The D40's 3D Color Matrix Metering II evaluates each scene for brightness, color, contrast, size and position of shadows and highlights, selected focus area and camera-to-subject distance, comparing that information against an onboard database of more than 30,000 actual photographic scenes.

Built-In Speedlight: Nikon's innovative i-TTL flash control built-in speedlight evaluates flash exposure with precision to achieve better automatic flash balance. The built-in Speedlight creates beautiful exposures in darkened conditions as well as adds sparkle for fill flash in outdoor situations for enhanced twilight shots or an added impact to daylight images.

Recording Media: Images are recorded onto SD (Secure Digital) memory cards and SDHC memory cards.The camera can support the following SD memory card capacities - 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB.

Help Menu: The D40 features a Help Menu System that describes many of the cameras buttons and features. The Help System is activated by pressing on the Help Menu button while you have currently selected the feature in question.

Image Size/Quality: The D40 records still images in JPEG and NEF formats. You have a choice of 3 image size options and 5 image quality options. Images are recorded in a 3:2 format similar to a 35mm film camera.

Digital Vari-Programs: Using the mode dial, you can choose from the following Digital Vari-Programs:

• Auto: camera settings are automatically adjusted (flash is turned off)
• Portrait: main subject stands out clearly while background details are softened
• Landscape: use for vivid landscape shots that enhance outlines, colors, and contrast in subjects like skyscapes and forests
• Child: use for snapshots of children; clothing and background details are vividly rendered while skin tones remain soft and natural
• Sports: high shutter speeds freeze motion for dynamic sports shots in which the main subject stands out clearly
• Close Up: use for close-up shots of flowers, insect, and other small objects
• Night Portrait: use for shots that provide natural balance between main subject and background when shooting portraits under low light

Shooting Modes: The shooting mode determines how the camera takes photographs. You can choose from the following shooting modes:

• Single Frame: camera takes one photograph each time the shutter release button is pressed
• Continuous (burst mode): camera records photographs up to 2.5 frames per second while the shutter release button is held down
• Self-timer: can be used to reduce camera shake or for self-portraits. The shutter release delay time can be set to 2, 5, 10 or 20 seconds.
• Delayed Remote: shutter release is controlled using the optional ML-L3 remote; you can choose how long the camera will wait for a signal from the remote before cancelling delayed or quick-response remote modes from 1, 5, 10 or 15 seconds
• Quick Response Remote: shutter release is controlled using the optional ML-L3 remote; the picture is taken immediately after focusing is complete

Memory Buffer: The camera is equipped with a memory buffer for temporary storage, allowing shooting to continue while photographs are being saved to the memory card.

Focus Modes: You can choose from the following focus modes:

• Autofocus (AF):
  • Automatic (AF-A): camera selects AF-S or AF-C mode automatically depending upon shooting conditions and whether the subject is moving.
  • Single-servo Autofocus (AF-S): camera focuses automatically when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. The focus remains locked while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. The picture will only be taken when the in-focus indicator is displayed.
  • Continuous-servo Autofocus (AF-C): camera focuses continuously while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. Photographs can be taken whether or not the camera is in focus.
• Manual (M): focus must be adjusted manually using the lens focusing ring

Focus Lock: Focus Lock can be used to change the composition after focusing, making it possible to focus on a subject that will not be in a focus area in the final composition.

AF Assist Illuminator: The built-in AF assist illuminator enables the camera to focus even when the subject is poorly lit.

AF-Area Modes: The D40 offers a choice of three focus areas that together cover a wide area of the frame. The AF-area mode determines how the focus area is selected and what happens if the subject moves out of the selected focus area while the camera is still focusing. You can choose one of the following AF-area modes:

• Single Area: you select the focus area manually and the camera focuses on the subject in the selected focus area only
• Dynamic Area: you select the focus area manually, but the camera uses information from multiple focus areas to determine focus
• Closest Subject: camera automatically selects focus area containing subject closest to camera

Exposure Modes: Using the mode dial, you can choose from the following exposure modes:

• Programmed Auto (P): camera automatically adjusts shutter speed and aperture according to a built-in program for optimal exposure in most situations
• Shutter-Priority Auto (S): user chooses shutter speed; camera sets aperture for best results
• Aperture-Priority Auto (A): user chooses aperture; camera sets shutter speed for best results
• Manual (M): user controls both shutter speed and aperture for complete control over exposure

Metering: When the camera is set to one of the exposure modes, you can choose one of the following metering modes:

• 3D Color Matrix: metering is performed by 420-segment RGB sensor, which sets exposure based on a variety of information from all areas of the frame.
• Center-weighted: camera meters the entire frame but assigns greatest weight (75%) to the area in the center of the frame (6, 8, 10, or 12mm circle)
• Spot: camera meters circle 3.5mm in diameter. The circle is centered on current focus area, making it possible to meter off-center subjects.

AE/AF Lock: If your subject is off-centered in the frame, it can become difficult to achieve proper exposure and focus. By engaging the AE/AF Lock feature, you can focus and meter on your subject, lock the exposure and focus by pressing the shutter release button halfway, then recompose your shot before taking the picture. You can choose from the following AE/AF Lock settings.

• AE/AF Lock: both focus and exposure lock while the AE/AF lock button is pressed
• AE Lock: exposure locks while the AE/AF lock button is pressed while the focus is unaffected
• AF Lock: focus locks while the AE/AF lock button is pressed while the exposure is unaffected align
• AE Lock Hold: exposure locks when the AE/AF lock button is pressed and remains locked until the button is pressed again

• AF-On: the AE/AF button initiates autofocus while the shutter-release button cannot be used to focus

Exposure Compensation: You can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure from -5.0 to +5.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps.

Sensitivity: When lighting is poor, the camera will automatically increase sensitivity, permitting faster exposures, and minimizing blur caused by inadvertent camera movement, up to a maximum equivalent of ISO 1600. In the menu, you can manually select on of the following ISO settings: Auto, 200, 400, 800, 1600 or HI 1 (approximately ISO 3200).

Noise Reduction: This option controls whether photographs taken at shutter speeds slower than 1 second are processed to reduce noise before being recorded to the memory card.

White Balance: White balance is used to preserve natural colors under different types of lighting. When the camera is set to one of the exposure modes, you can choose one of the following white balance options:

• Auto: white balance is automatically adjusted to suit the lighting conditions
• Incandescent: for use under incandescent lighting
• Fluorescent: for use under most fluorescent lighting
• Direct Sunlight: for use with subjects under direct sunlight
• Flash: for use with built-in Speedlight or optional Nikon Speedlights
• Cloudy: use when taking pictures under overcast skies
• Shade: use under sunny skies when subject is in shade
• Preset: a white object is used as reference to set white balance under unusual lighting conditions

Image Enhancement: When the camera is set to one of the exposure modes, you can choose from the following image enhancement options:

• Normal: recommended for most situations
• Vivid: enhances saturation, contrast, and sharpness to produce vivid images with vibrant reds, greens, and blues
• More Vivid: maximizes the Vivid settings to produce sharper image outlines
• Softer: softens outlines
• Black and White: takes photos in black and white
• Portrait: lowers contrast while lending natural texture and rounded feel to skin of portrait subjects
• Custom: allows you to adjust the following settings: sharpness, contrast, color reproduction, saturation, and hue. The color reproduction setting allows you to select one of the following color modes:
  • Ia (sRGB): choose for portrait shots that will be printed or used as is, with no further modification
  • II ( Adobe RGB): photographs taken at this setting are adapted to Adobe RGB color space
  • IIIa (sRGB): choose for nature or landscape shots that will be printed or used as is, with no further modification

Flash Modes: You can choose one of the following flash modes:

• TTL: output of built-in Speedlight is adjusted automatically in response to shooting conditions
• Manual: allows you to adjust the power of the Speedlight to one of the following settings: 1/2 power, 1/4 power, 1/8 power, 1/16 power, 1/32 or Full power

Flash Sync Modes: The following flash sync modes are available depending upon the shooting mode currently selected with the mode dial:

• Auto Flash: When lighting is poor or subject is backlit, the flash pops up automatically when the shutter release is pressed halfway and fires as required.
• Red-eye Reduction: The AF-assist lamp lights before the flash fires to reduce the red-eye effect
• Slow Sync: Flash is combined with shutter speeds as slow as 30 seconds to capture both subject and background at night or under dim light
• Rear-curtain Sync: The flash fires just before the shutter closes, creating effect of stream of light following moving subjects

Flash Exposure Compensation: In P, S, A, and M modes, the flash exposure compensation can be used to increase or reduce flash output from the level chosen by the camera's flash control system. The flash exposure compensation can be set to values between -3 EV and +1 EV in increments of 1/3 EV.

Histogram: The D40 features the ability to view a histogram on the LCD monitor screen. A histogram is a graph showing the distribution of tones in the image.

Playback Menu: The playback menu contains the following options:

• Delete: allows you to delete the current image or all the images in the selected folder or folders

• Playback Folder: allows you to play back the images in the current folder or all folders

• Rotate Tall: portrait photos are displayed in tall orientation during playback

• Slide Show: allows you to play back images one after the other. You can adjust how long each picture is displayed, allowing you to choose one of the following frame intervals: 2, 3, 5, or 10 seconds.

• Print Set: used to create a digital "print order" that lists the photographs to be printed, the number of copies, and the information to be included on each print

Full Frame Playback: The following options can be viewed on the LCD monitor in full-screen playback.

• Delete: allows you to delete the current image or all the images in the selected folder or folders

• Protect: allows you to protect current photographs from being accidentally deleted

• View: allows you to play back the images in order recorded or reverse order

• Information: allows you view detailed information about the current image

• Zoom: allows you to zoom in on current photograph

• Thumbnails: allows you to view multiple photographs at one time

• Retouch: allows you to create a retouch copy of the current photograph

• Shooting: allows you to display your shooting information

• Menus: allows you to view the menu screens

• Exit: allows you to return to the shooting mode

Image Review: When this setting is enabled, the camera displays the image on the LCD monitor after the picture is taken.

Single-Image Playback: During single-image playback, you can view all the pictures stored on the memory card one at a time.

Thumbnail Playback: This feature allows you to view four or nine images at once on the LCD monitor so that you can search for an image quickly.

Playback Zoom: During single-image and thumbnail playback, you can zoom in on the selected image. You can zoom in up to 19x for large images, up to 15x for medium images, and up to 10 for small images. Once the image is enlarged, you can move it around on the LCD monitor using the multi selector.

Auto Image Rotation: Photographs taken while this feature is set to "On" allow the image to be played back automatically in the orientation it was taken such as Portrait or Landscape.

Folders: The camera allows you to create and name separate folders so you can divide your photographs into different categories.

Auto Off Timers: This feature allows you to choose how long the monitor and exposure meters remain on when no operations are performed. You can choose from the following selections.

• Short: monitor and exposure meters remain on for 4 seconds; when image review is on, pictures are displayed in the monitor for 4 seconds after shooting
• Normal: monitor and exposure meters remain on for 8 seconds; when the image review is on, picture are displayed in the monitor for 4 seconds after shooting
• Long: monitor remains on for 20 seconds and exposure meters remain on for 1 minute; when image review is on, pictures are displayed in the monitor for 20 seconds after shooting
• Custom: allows you to choose the monitor off delay and the image review time from 4 seconds, 8 seconds, 20 seconds, 1minute or 10 minutes; you can choose the auto meter-off delay from 4 seconds, 8 seconds, 20 seconds, 1 minute or 30 minutes.

Retouch Menu: The Retouched Menu allows you to create trimmed, resized or retouched copies of the photographs you have taken on the memory card. The Retouch Menu gives you the following editing options.

• D-Lighting: brightens dark or back-lit subjects or produces effects similar to a flash
• Red-Eye Correction: corrects "red-eye" caused by the flash
• Trim: creates cropped copies of existing images
• Monnochrome: copies photographs in black/white, sepia or cyanotype color tones
• Effects: creates copies with color filter effects; you can choose from Sky Light, Warm filter, or Color Balance
• Small Picture: creates small copies of existing photographs; you can choose from 640x480, 320x240 or 160x120
• Image Overlay: combines two RAW images into a single image

Text Input: The digital SLR camera allows you to input up to 36 characters of alphanumeric text to a recorded image and is then stored in the Exif header.

Protecting Images: The protect feature allows you to protect important images from accidental erasure.

PictBridge Printing Capability: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer. PictBridge is a new standard that allows you to connect a PictBridge compliant camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer and make prints, regardless of brand.

DPOF: The DPOF feature enables you to create a digital "print order" for PictBridge-compatible printers and other devices that support DPOF.

Exif Print (Exif 2.21): The D40 conforms to "Exif Print", a worldwide standard. Vital camera settings (such as: exposure mode, white balance, exposure time) and scene data are recorded to the image file when it is captured. Printers compatible with "Exif Print" are able to use this information to produce high quality photographs, exactly the way they were intended at the time of capture. This intelligent communication process also allows the printer to correct for poor lighting or mistakes, resulting in photos that can be even better than the originals.

Quick Charger: The D40 comes supplied with an AC quick charger that allows you to recharge the supplied EN-EL9 Lithium Ion battery back. The EN-EL9 will charge fully in approximately 90 minutes using the supplied AC quick charger. The EN-EL9 Lithium Ion battery can last up to approximately 470 shots in single-frame mode or 2,200 shots in continuous mode depending on operating conditions.

TV Playback: The camera features a 3.5mm minijack video output plug to playback still images on your TV or monitor using the optional EG-D100 video cable (sold separately). You can select between NTSC or PAL video playback.

Optional Lens Compatibility: CPU lenses (particularly type G and D lenses) are recommended for use with the D40. The supplied lens is a type G CPU lens.

Optional Flash Compatibility: The D40 is equipped with an accessory shoe that allows you to use the optional Nikon SB-400, 800, 600, 80DX, 28DX 28, 27, 23, 22S, and 29S speedlights if needed.

Optional AC Adapter: Use of an optional EH-5 AC adapter and optional EP-5 AC connector is recommended for extended playback.

PictureProject: The supplied PictureProject software allows you to do the following: view pictures, print pictures, transfer pictures, retouch pictures, and send pictures by email.
