Our take on the JVC KD-AVX77

Excellent security, plus touchscreen iPod® control

The understated elegance of JVC's KD-AVX77 DVD receiver fits any vehicle's interior. Its El Kameleon security system presents a plain, black face without any buttons or knobs to the left of the screen — you make all adjustments with just a touch of your finger. The controls black out and disappear when you're not using them, then light up automatically when your hand approaches the screen.

Gorgeous touchscreen

The KD-AVX77 wastes no space on its single-sized face — it's dominated by the 5.4" wide-angle touchscreen. The controls disappear when you're not using them, then light up automatically when your hand approaches the screen. You make all adjustments with a touch of your finger.

Pick from four viewing modes, including an ultra-wide Cinemascope setting for watching DVDs when you're parked. Split-screen mode is perfect for viewing album art and song info while you're listening to music. Choose from different menus configurations and colors to suit your taste and match your vehicle's interior — you can even use your own jpeg pictures as wallpaper.

First-class sound

Play the MP3, WMA, and AAC files you've burned to a disc or saved on a thumb drive. The powerful built-in amplifier and 24-bit digital-to-analog converter make the most of your music, and the 7-band equalizer lets you adjust a range of frequencies to create the perfect sound for your car's interior. If you're building a complete audio/video system, the 6-channel preamp outputs let you add amplifiers, subwoofers, and even a center speaker.

Movie theater on wheels

Watch DVDs on the widescreen display up front while you're parked, or connect a screen in the back so your passengers can watch while you drive. Dual-zone mode lets you enjoy your favorite driving music up front while they watch in back. And a built-in 5.1 surround sound decoder lets you hook up real movie theater surround sound in the back for a truly rewarding movie experience.

iPod ® and Bluetooth®

Built-in iPod controls keep your favorite playlists on tap, and you can even stream your iPod videos by adding an adapter. If you have a Bluetooth enabled phone, the receiver's built-in Bluetooth capabilities let you take your phone calls through the receiver while you keep both hands on the wheel.

Bluetooth note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

The pixel resolution of the display is 2400 horizontal x 240 vertical (576,000 pixels total). The touch-screen LCD serves as a video monitor, system information display, and control panel. The KD-AVX77 front-panel and integrated 5.4" LCD monitor electronically slide-down to insert and eject your CD/DVD discs. The motorized display can be tilted (up) to one of four angles for your viewing pleasure. The JVC head unit's front-panel display is also detachable and comes supplied with a hard-plastic face case for when the faceplate is detached.

Proximity Sensor Touch-Screen Control: The JVC KD-AVX77' LCD touch-screen control panel features a proximity sensor which allows the touch-screen controls to illuminate when you move your hand close to the head unit's front-panel or turn off when there is no operation for approximately 10 seconds. You can set the unit's motion sensitivity to Mid or High. The touch-screen controls are turned on in the following cases - When you move your hand close to the touch-panel controls, When your finger touches the touch-screen controls, When you use the remote controller, When a call/text message comes in, or When the signal from an optional rear view camera comes in.

LCD Monitor Settings: The unit's touch-screen LCD monitor features the following customized settings.

    • Auto: the correct aspect mode is automatically chosen based on the disc
  • Dimmer: When 12 volts is applied to the illumination lead and the dimmer set to Auto, the display dims. The dimmer can also be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display is always dimmed), or Dimmer Time Set (you program the time for the dimmer to turn off an on).

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the green wire in the supplied 16-pin harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit, as well as a constant power source and ground. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus.

Audio Connection

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-AVX77 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to low, the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to high, and the volume control will range from 0 to 50. The internal amp can also be turned of when all the speakers are powered by outboard amplifiers.

6CH 5V Preamp Outputs With Built-in Crossover: The unit has six 5-volt preamp outputs (stereo Front and Rear, Center, and mono-Sub). The front and rear preamp output feature fade controls while the center and subwoofer preamp outputs are non-fading. The subwoofer output has independent level control, adjustable from -6 to +8. You can also adjust the unit's built-in crossover frequency between the front/rear speakers and the subwoofer output from 80, 120, or 150Hz.

5.1-Channel Decoding: You can enjoy 5.1-channel sound with the built-in surround processor, including Dolby Digital and Dolby ProLogic II (movie and music). In addition to the front and rear speaker outputs, the unit features preamp outputs for front left and right, rear left and right, center, and subwoofer. Dolby ProLogic II Music also has adjustments for Panorama (depth) and Center Width.

Speaker Adjustments: The KD-AVX77 features the following speaker adjustments to customize your car audio experience.

  • Speaker Size: Like home surround receivers, you can adjust the following speaker size settings:
    • Front: Small or Large
    • Center: Small, Large, or None
    • Rear: Small, Large, or None
    • Subwoofer: On or Off
  • Speaker Level: You can adjust the output level of each individual speaker relative to the main volume from -10 dB to +10 dB.
  • Speaker Distance: You can adjust the speaker output timing separately for each individual speaker (excluding the subwoofer) according to the distance from the speakers to the listening position. The distance for each speaker can be adjusted from 6" to 240" in 6" increments.

7-Band Equalizer: Along with a flat preset, there are eight preset EQ curves and three user programmable fields; Hard Rock, R&B, Pop, Jazz, Dance, Country, Reggae, Classic, User 1, User 2, and User 3. The user presets can be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. For each User preset, you can independently adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz, 150 Hz, 400 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.5 kHz, 6.3 kHz, and 15 kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from -10dB to +10dB in 2dB increments.

D. Range Compression: This feature allows you to enjoy a powerful sound at low or middle volume levels while playing back a disc with a Dolby Digital soundtrack. The KD-AVX77 compresses the volume range between the loudest and softest audio sections of the disc

Source Volume Control: The volume of each source (other than FM radio) can be adjusted relative to the FM volume, so the level is constant as you change from one input to another.

Dual Zone Operation: You can enjoy disc playback from a connected external monitor and pair of wireless headphones (both sold separately), while listening to any source (other than USB), through your vehicle's speakers.

Note: When Dual Zone is in use, you can only operate the built-in DVD/CD player using the supplied remote control.

Discontinued?

Written By Chuck, Niceville, FL on Sunday, February 05, 2012

This is a great head unit if you want video, USB connectivity, blue tooth, and CD/DVD in a single DIN. My car cannot accommodate a double DIN, or a flip out screen, so this JVC is perfect. Unfortunately JVC discontinued this unit. I also had some trouble getting video to play on the JVC from my iPhone. I called JVC directly and they were extremely unhelpful. I called Crutchfield and talked to Tom, and he helped me through the set-up. Crutchfield is truly a great company. My loyalty is secured.
Pros:
Everything you could want in a non flip out screen single DIN
Cons:
Small screen (should be obvious)

Not Bad For A Single-DIN

Written By RickW, San Diego, Ca. on Tuesday, January 17, 2012

I wanted something with more than 2v preouts. Something that fits in the wierd DIN and a half, Ford location(with no modification). Great bluetooth! The iPhone connection wire was extra, and doesn't always work right. Sometimes I gotta turn off the unit to reset the USB. I think it's a bad wire.
Pros:
Customizable Pretty
Cons:
iPhone 4 connectablity

Great Looking and Great Sound

Written By Nelson, Redding, CA on Friday, September 16, 2011

I put this in my Audi TT convertible. It fit perfectly, works great, and looks awesome. The Ipod integration is flawless and the bluetooth works great. I have it hooked up to a Kenwood 5 channel digital amp and have installed a new subwoofer. The connections worked great. This unit has 5v outputs, which allows me to turn the amp gain way down. This keeps the potential for distortion very low. The touchscreen is difficult to read during the day, but no more so that any other screen. But, at night it is incredible. The colors can be changed to match the interior exactly. Also, it can be toned down so that it matches the look of the car. There are no cheap looking flashing lights or fake chrome knobs to spoil the look. It just has a clean, quality look. And great sound. I absolutely recommend it.

Tight Head Unit

Written By Carl, Chicago on Wednesday, September 07, 2011

5/5, if looks AND performance are important, buy this one. The touch screen is super clean, and doesn't make the dash of your car look cheap w/ a bunch of crazy lights and knobs. So many extras and options, you will not be disappointed.

High Quality Receiver

Written By Big D, Toms River, NJ on Thursday, February 24, 2011

I have purchased this high end receiver almost 2 years ago and it is by far the most quality receiver i have owned. In order for your vehicle to have great sound it starts with the receiver. Have a sub woofer with an amp built in plus an extra amp and quality speakers and presto!!! You got serious sound! The features on this receiver are fantastic and once you understand how to navigate into the system you can adjust the sound to your liking. The crossover and equalizer built in really fine tunes the sound to my liking. I recommend this receiver as i have had nothing but beautiful crisp power when i want it, anytime! The price hasn't changed in 2 years which tells you that this receiver is high-end quality piece! Spend the money and you will know what i am talking about! Cheers!

BMW INSTALL

Written By RAAB, Florida on Monday, February 07, 2011

Very nice After market Cd Player. I installed it in my BMW X3 and it came out pretty clean! I took advantage of the ipod integration by running the USB port to a iphone docking mount. I also am going to install the Steering Wheel Control interface once it gets delivered. Pretty simple install with all the correct mounting, and wiring kits... All the options are very convenient and make for a much safer and upgraded ride sound system. Operation is very user friendly, and I would recommend it for anyone looking for a new Cd Player!

Needs new software

Written By Steve4, Seattle, WA on Tuesday, November 02, 2010

I'm looking to replace the AVX77 after just 4 months use. The hardware is high quality, the sound is very nice, and the unique single-DIN full-face screen has a lot of potential to make this a terrific car stereo. It's just the software that I don't care for.

There are lots of options in the setup menus, but however I set them, I end up with a screen that is cluttered, unattractive, and functionally awkward to the point that I feel unsafe trying to select an iPod playlist while driving. The iPod interface is what I use most, and its lack of the usual track progress bar is annoying. Album covers use only 2/3 of the available screen height, and they alternate with track data rather than displaying simultaneously. Even with the nice wide screen, track data is limited to about 20 characters per line, and the data display is not customizable. Meanwhile screen space is wasted on logos and hard-to-press soft buttons, some of which don't even work and most of which belong on a sub-level screen. The photo wallpaper feature does not seem very practical to me since text is hard to read on top of most photos (although a digital photo of a blank section of your dash might be a solution to the otherwise harsh background color choices).

Ideal main screen IMO: max height album cover (more legible) next to generous space for customizable track data; most of screen button-free and available for expanded finger-motion controls intended to be done blindly with eyes on the road.

Very surprised!!!!!!

Written By Antonio, Greenville, IL on Wednesday, August 25, 2010

This deck is remarkable. I have had and installed Kenwood, Pioneer, VR3, Sony, and a JVC a few years ago that I didn't care for. I decided to take a chance on JVC again after reading some of the reviews. I am glad I did. You have to be tech swavvy to operate this deck, so be prepared for that. Bluetooth works great. The buttons do hesitate sometimes when you tap them but the key is to push for a second. You cant just tap sometimes. However wasn't enough to give it 4 stars, 4 and a half maybe, but they didn't have that option. The search problem one reviewer was having wasn't a big deal to me because I only load about 200 songs at a time on a usb drive. However if you have thousands don't even think about this deck unless you operate it from your ipod. Sound quality is outstanding and this deck gives you a lot of control over your music adjusments. This deck is loaded with options. If you do decide to get it I hope you enjoyed it as much as I have. Crutchfield as usual sent everything I needed for the install. I have been shopping with crutchfield since 1993 and as usual I am pleased with there service. By the way I have a 2005 dodge ram quad cab I installed it in and it looks great.

Holy Cow! Seven Years of Pain Gone

Written By Land Rover Discoveries Look Li, Grosse Pointe, MI on Monday, August 16, 2010

The Disco base head unit is to audio the way fish 'n' chips is to haute cuisine.

After seven years of underwater midrange, I woke up, grabbed a bagel and coffee at a local shop, got back in the car and started 'er up. The front driveshaft fragged my transfer case like an IED. Fifteen hundred dollars later, it drives like new. Which is like saying your new girlfriend is America Ferrera. But it became clear that the Disco was going to last a few years. I decided I'd suffer back surgery caused by the rock-hard suspension; but no way could I take a second more of that sound.

After careful research ("Oh, I can only get a one DIN unit? Let's buy that flashy one."), my life has changed for the better. The KD-AVX77 not only has a really cool name but it gave new life to some pretty good speakers that my head unit kept hidden. Now I have more punch than a UFC champ, sweeter highs than any drug and a taut midrange, unlike my middle-age body.

I disagree with reviewers who don't like the iPod controls on the unit. They're simple and load quickly. My iPhone 3GS doesn't transfer its phone book, but I only have three friends not including my parole officer. One of the coolest features is buried under five layers of menus. It's the "Subliminal Messaging Center." It gets me more play than the three wolves moon shirt. Okay, now I'm kidding. But it really is a good unit.
