Our take on the JVC KW-AVX820

Put a sharp-looking entertainment center in your vehicle's double-sized (4" tall") dash opening with JVC's KW-AVX820 DVD receiver. Take your pick from twelve different illumination colors to best match the beautiful 7" screen to your vehicle's interior. You can detach the monitor — an unusual feature with double-sized receivers — to add a measure of security when your car is parked.

Multimedia system
The KW-AVX820 lets you watch your DVDs up front while you're parked, or connect a screen in the back so your passengers can watch movies while you listen to your tunes up front. When your hand approaches the screen, a proximity sensor activates the video controls, which then disappear as you take your hand away.

Control your iPod® and iPhone™
JVC builds iPod control right into the USB slot — no adapter required. Just connect your iPod or iPhone using the cable it came with, and you'll be using the receiver's controls to browse your tunes and playlists in no time. JVC's 2-Way Control lets your passengers use the iPod itself to control your music while it's connected to the radio — and you'll still see song details on the display. An optional adapter allows you to use your iPhone, or watch video from your iPod through your system.

Built-in Bluetooth®
Built-in Bluetooth technology lets you make safer hands-free calls in your vehicle. When a call comes in, the receiver mutes the music and you'll hear the caller over your vehicle's speakers. Mount the included microphone in a convenient spot for maximum sound quality.

Great sound
The powerful built-in amplifier and premium digital-to-analog converter make your movies and music sound their best, while the 7-band equalizer lets you adjust a range of frequencies to create the perfect sound for your car's interior. Play MP3, WMA, and AAC files you've burned to disc, or load them on a USB flash drive. You'll have tunes to spare for your next trip, and you'll see song info on the receiver's display.

Building a system
Gold-plated, 5-volt preamp outputs send a clean, strong signal to your amps and subs. Add an HD Radio™ tuner and take advantage of the enhanced sound quality and additional programming options offered by participating stations. You can also add a satellite radio tuner to access an amazing variety of commercial-free music.

Bluetooth note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

OK, but....

Written By Scott, Maryland on Tuesday, December 08, 2009

Got this to replace a Pioneer unit with built-in Bluetooth I also got from Crutchfield. After
installing, I found some problems. The display was not bright enough during the day
(particularly when using the backup camera) and was too bright at night. The
performance of the Bluetooth connection was not that great either. Every person
complained about static, echo, etc. And yes, I did try adjusting settings for all the above.
Still not happy. BUT, Crutchfield came through with a PAINLESS return process, which is
why I will always buy from them!!

I absolutely love it!

Written By , Vancouver, Washington on Tuesday, October 27, 2009

After a few dash cuts and sanding on my 2005 PT Cruiser this fits amazingly. Not for the squimish if your afraid to cut up your dash, for those with non-double din openings...

As for the radio, Screen is beautiful, touch works first time, every time... motor works smooth, tilt is perfect for my lower mounting spot to allow viewing.

Wiring was simple, pretty much standard radio install, however there is a parking break GROUND that needs to be hooked to the ground on the parking break circuit.

I haven't installed any video in or out on it yet but eventually will hook a wii into it and have 2 headrest LCD's in the rear seats...

Only thing I'm concerned about is the contacts on the detachable screen... Even the books says the contacts will wear out after extended use... Being that I have this in a convertible, I prefer to pull it off every stop... Hoping they just put it in as a disclaimer and it works for many years to come... (detachable face was a HUGE selling point for me on this).

Things I wish I knew

Written By Charles, Frederick, MD on Thursday, October 15, 2009

I installed this a few days ago in a 2009 Jeep Wrangler. Overall I'm very happy with it
and it's a big improvement over the factory stereo. There are a few things that I wish I
would have known and that's what I wanted to share in this review:
- There is no clock display when the unit is off. The only clock in my vehicle is the
stereo, so I miss that feature.
- I don't have an Ipod. I use a 32GB USB flash drive for music. It acts like it's never seen
the drive before each time it's accessed. For example when listening to a song via USB
and switch to the radio when you come back to USB there is a 30 second plus
initialization. It will then continue playing from where it stopped.
- Another thing with USB is that it only sorts by folder. There is no way to sort by artist,
album name, song, etc.
Again, I'm very happy with the performance and sound, just a few annoyances.

Got a better sound in my 2008 FJ Cruiser

Written By Doug, Frisco, TX on Monday, September 28, 2009

Just installed this unit in my 2008 FJ Cruiser and was easier then I thought.
Crutchfield sent everything I needed for the install, including clear
instructions with pictures of how to remove the factory unit from my specific
vehicle. I just followed the easy instructions for connecting the vehicle
specific wiring harness that was included - The wire colors on this JVC
receiver matched the harness colors which made it extremely simple. Then
the wiring harness plugged right into my car. The included mounting
adapter also fit my car's existing mounting holes perfectly but was a little
off from the holes on the HU but still worked since it was made of plastic
and had some give. After bolting it in, the HU sat too high and was to snug
against the car's panel which kept the motorized screen from working. I
got the dremel out and knotched out the top of the mounting holes which
lowered the unit a little. I kept the screws loose on the ones going into
the HU so I could move the HU in and out to hit the perfect sweet spot and
then tightened it with a Z shape screw driver. Also, had to trim off the top
and bottom part off the mounting brackets trim plate because it kept the
motorize screen from working too. I really only needed the side parts of
this trim plate to hide the gaps on the side. Looks great. Turning it on, I
was surprised how much better it made my factory speakers sound -

JVC KW-AVX820

Written By philip, Rustburg VA on Thursday, September 24, 2009

I just installed this product in our 2006 kia sorento EX. And we are very happy with all the features. Blue tooth hands free phone works flawlessley. Dvd picture clarity is great, and that FREE rearview camera from Crutchfield works like a charm. I'm not a tech. guy but with Crutchfields' easy to understand instructions and online videos I had no trouble with installation. Great Buy!

This does everything

Written By Exped_04, Columbus, OH on Wednesday, August 05, 2009

Just installed this receiver in my 04 Ford Expedition. Crutchfield sent everything you would need, just pull the old one out and put in this baby!

This thing works great, easy to setup and all the controls are effortless to use. I'm so happy with this, can't believe I was without before now.

Bluetooth is great, Ipod controls are great and the various other inputs you can connect this receiver are just amazing. Make sure to buy the steering wheel control module too!

Great Unit

Written By Mitch, Delaware on Tuesday, June 30, 2009

This is an excellent unit. Video quality is great. Video play back via USB is a plus. Detatchable face is great. Touchscreen is very accurate. Sounds is great. 7 band equalizer is very good. Has a proximity sensor that works great. While watching dvds when your hand approaches the screen the menu pops up. Remote works very well full functioning. Bluetooth is excellent. Sound quality is 5 stars. No echos. Other bluetooth functions are excellent. Ive installed several dvd units this is the best one. Only thing its lacking is theres no info via radio reguarding songs or info from the radio station.

high expectations not met

Written By matt, oahu, hi--2008 tacoma on Friday, April 03, 2009

Here are some of the things that i was dissapointed about.

The USB port is only for audio. So that means you can't use if for loading up pictures or watching movies through it. The IPOD feature is also for sound only. If you want to watch movies from your IPOD you have to purchase another ipod adapter that has the USB end and also three coax cables for the video feed. I had to get last years model because no one has this years model is stock.

The back ground design only features four options to choose from (all pretty boring, especially the "blank" one)and then about 20 different colors you can pick. The only built in video is a demo showing the features of the deck. I was really hoping to put picks of my son as the back ground but according to JVC there is no changing or adding back ground dispalys

I am still trying to get all the face plate pieces just right. The deck doesn't sit high enough so i am using a combination of washer to adjust the hight and what is still touching i will be trimming off.

I hope this helps you out. Had i known all this i probably would have spent a little more and gotten a product that does more than i wanted, not less

Wonderful Unit

Written By Michael, Kansas City, KS on Monday, March 30, 2009

I've just finished installing the JVC this weekend. Totally didn't think I could do it. This stereo has so many features it's been hard just to discover them all, but it's been fun playing around with it. Honestly I haven't even seen the video capabilities yet but who cares. I have the HD tuner, the steering wheel interface module, the bluetooth is fabulous and my iPod is connected. I'm like a kid in a candy store. The factory speakers are still in the car and the sound now is so much better than the OE radio. The 7 band EQ was important to me for control of the sound. The bluetooth was needed for my constant road trips while handling multiple business calls. For comfort, it was important to have the ability to play my iPod with a hard- wired connection and have total control through the head unit. Now I just want to spend more time in my car.
