Kenwood

Our take on the Kenwood KTC-HR200

Get rid of the popping, hissing, and interference in your daily commute, and switch to digital radio broadcasts with Kenwood's KTC-HR200 HD Radio™ tuner. The tuner works with all 2003-up satellite radio-ready Kenwood receivers with CD changer controls, along with 2008-up audio/video receivers with Kenwood's KAB data bus system.

Once you connect the KTC-HR200, you'll still receive current analog radio signals, but tune to an HD Radio station and the tuner will switch automatically to the digital signal. You'll hear FM stations that approach CDs in sound quality, along with AM stations that sound as good as today's analog FM.

HD Radio™ technology allows a station to create up to three separate channels on its assigned frequency. The KTC-HR200 will receive these additional channels, so you'll enjoy a wider selection of entertainment and information provided by your favorite radio stations. And when you tune to any HD Radio or Radio Data System (RDS) station, you'll see song, title, and artist details, along with other text information, on your Kenwood stereo's display.

Important Note: The KTC-HR200 does not have a pass-through connection. Call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 if you want to connect this tuner and another Kenwood component to your Kenwood car stereo.

Specifications

Features

HD Radio: HD Radio technology, where available, offers higher quality sound than conventional analog broadcasts and receives text data. HD Radio provides FM broadcasts that are equal to CD sound quality and AM broadcasts that are as good as analog FM stereo broadcasts. HD Radio also provides a variety of data, including station name, song title, artist name, album name, etc.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

Head Unit Compatibility: The KTC-HR200 tuner can be controlled by most 2003 and up HD Ready Kenwood receivers which feature either Kenwood's 13-pin connector or Kenwood's KAB 9-pin connector. The KTC-HR200 is both digital and analog, so the tuner can receive all FM and AM stations.

Receive Mode: You can choose one of the following receive modes:

  • Auto: analog broadcasts and digital broadcasts are switched automatically. When both are being transmitted, the digital broadcast will have priority.
  • Digital: receives digital broadcasts only
  • Analog: receives analog broadcasts only

Tuning Mode: The KTC-HR200 tuner has the following three tuning modes: Auto seek, Preset station seek, and Manual.

Preset Memory: You can store 18 FM and 6 AM stations in the receiver's preset memory.

Auto Memory Entry: This feature selects stations with the strongest signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency.

Information Display: When listening to HD Radio, you can cycle through the following information on the receiver's display: station name, song title/artist name/album name/genre, and frequency.

Inputs and Outputs

To Head Unit: 13-pin jack attached to a 57" cable that connects to a compatible Kenwood head unit which features a 13-pin CD changer port. The Headunit also comes supplied with a 13-pin to 9-pin KAB adapter to connect to compatible Kenwood head units which feature the new KAB port.

Note: There are two dip-switches on the tuner that need to be adjusted based on whether you are connecting the KTC-HR200 to a Kenwood head unit with a 13-pin port or 9-pin KAB port.

Antenna: Motorola jack which is used to connect your vehicle's antenna. (unit come supplied with a 59" antenna extension cable)

Works with DNX6140 without any problem

Written By dharma, Boston, MA on Sunday, August 08, 2010

This module can become quite hot after some run time. However, it works flawlessly with my DNX6140 with firmware 3.10 (latest). One of my complain is that DNX6140 cannot memorize the additional multicast station channel. So every time that I want to go to the 3rd channel of an HD station, I have to start from the main channel and go up to the 3rd one. I hope that this may be fixed through firmware. Sound quality of HD radio also depends on the quality of the materials transmitted. Lower noise, better freq response, but not necessarily as sensitive as analog FM.

Worth every penny--Denver area/ Jeep install

Written By arturixtl, Longmont Colorado on Thursday, June 24, 2010

So I got this and installed in my Jeep Grand Cherokee to complement a KVT 512 and wow--worth every penny--the KUVO jazz station sounds killer. In terms of install, it won't fit behind the head unit, so you have snake the wires up the passenger area--kinda of a pain but they conceal well.
---Set the box on Auto and you will get HD and non-digital stations, and if you drive quite a bit it will make the commute much more feasible.

Bulky, simple

Written By , San Diego County, CA on Sunday, May 02, 2010

The HR200 works, but is extrememly large for what it does and three times the size of comparable equipment from competitiors. As large as it is there should be many more features. Biggest disappointment was there is a single input for the antenna. My new Kenwood 9960 head unit (flagship model eXcelon) only has one "hi speed" antenna input. Therefore I can only plug my HD Radio tuner or Sat Radion tuner in at a time. This is a problem with the new Kenwood head unit, but if the satelite radio could input to the HR200 and there still be only one output, this could ease installations, clean up wire clutter behind the dash and centralize all am/fm/sat/HD input through one system.

A big box that doesn't provide much!

Depends on same factors car stereos already have

Written By Michael, Akron, OH on Friday, January 01, 2010

I've had this in my truck for about 9 months. I figured that the HD stations
would have a better signal, but it doesn't appear that they do. This only
performs as well as a regular receiver would perform, only when you do get an HD
station tuned in, and it stays tuned in, it does sound very good. Just like
regular radio, if it's cloudy, rainy, (easier for electrons to pass through
atmosphere) you get better reception, the HD works better. If it's clear out,
same as regular, the station goes in and out, you lose HD signal, the weaker
signals go out completely, leaving you in silence, then come back, which if
you're blasting, I don't think that's too good. If you have a bad antenna, same
results. I give it a 3, because as stated by some others, it will receive a
clean HD signal. The AM seems to be a lot better. But it doesn't give you any
advantage on keeping your radio tuned in and locked over a non-HD radio. When
it works, no complaints, sounds great, I'd rather have it than not, but don't
expect a magic radio that all of a sudden grabs every HD station and locks it
in. I do also have to say, regular FM, (same conditions) does sound better,
there is a significant decrease in hissing and popping all around. But, it's
still radio, improved, but still affected like any other radio.

cannot recommend

Written By bob, staunton illinois on Wednesday, December 02, 2009

i thought the kenwood kdc-mp238 was usable but not user friendly after i installed it. the addition of the ktc-hr200 makes the receiver even more frustrating.

the limited instructions are inscrutable, the size of the unit makes it impossible to fit in the dash and the mounting 'system' (velcro strips) is useless.

i waited a couple months before submitting this to see if my opinion improved with use but i cannot say i am happy with my purchase after two months.

i have installed a number of car stereos over forty years starting with a 1967 vw bus thru a 2007 honda accord and this unit is the sorriest thing i have spent money on to date. it gets two stars instead of one because yes, it will pick up hd signals.

should have waited until an affordable hd receiver was available instead of getting 'hd ready'

lesson learned. as an aside i have been a happy owner of a number of kenwood products in the past including ham radio, home audio and other car audio, but doubt i will be buying from them in the future.

It works

Written By ab-76, Eastern PA on Monday, October 26, 2009

I added this onto my order for the Kenwood KDC-MP342U head unit. I'd never been curious enough about HD radio to buy an adapter, but it was definately worth a try. I have an '09 Tacoma regular cab and despite the fact that it's rather sizeable, it was easy to find a spot to mount it. I have it attached to a metal bracket near the rear of the passenger side kick panel. I'm impressed with the number of HD stations I can pick up and I'm also impressed with the sound quality - MAJOR difference - however, as others have said, the signal does cut in and out a little too frequently. However I have no way to tell why - it could be that I'm in a fringe area, or it could be the car antenna, or it could be this tuner, or it could be that the technology is just not optimal yet. Overall I'm satisfied though. When the signal does cut out, the transition back to non-HD is smooth 99% of the time. In a few years when I'm ready for a new vehicle and a new head unit, etc., I will definately get a built-in HD tuner because of the pleasant experience with this one.

I hate this thing!!!

Written By Yvie, Oakley, CA on Tuesday, September 22, 2009

I installed this unit along with my new Kenwood stereo in my Camry. The
stations constantly switch back and forth from analog to HD which causes
the stations to echo during the flip-flop. SO ANNOYING! I can't enjoy
listening to the radio because of this. The stations do sound great once the
HD signal comes through, but it's only for a minute at the most, then when
the signal goes out and there is nothing but silence. So, needless to say all
I do is listen to my same old CD's. Definite buyers remorse with this unit.

Great addition to a Kenwood receiver.

Written By Douglas, Richmond, VA on Thursday, July 23, 2009

If you have a compatible Kenwood receiver, just get one.

Easy to install and works as advertised. Not much to say except it works and I should have picked this up earlier when I bought my DNX-8120.

Manual isn't great but the unit is easy to figure out anyway.

A must for high fidelity

Written By cherrytroy, Phoenix, Az on Thursday, June 11, 2009

If you invested all your money in your mobile stereo you must invest in HD radio. It turned my sub-par sounding stereo into a mobile rock concert. Think I am kidding, try listening to regular FM with component speakers. You will wish you didn't FM is the way of the 8 track; old technology trying to work on new technology stuff. Unless you like paying for Satellite, I would say stick with free; support your local stations and buy this.

works great

Written By , waldorf, md on Tuesday, June 02, 2009

It works great, but in combination with the Kenwood in-dash radio(KDC-MP822) I have it does not allow for selecting either analog or digital radio...it's digital only with this unit. Relatively easy install, but I didn't find the installation instructions (amplifier add-on) provided by Crutchfield particularly helpful...instructions should be vehicle-specific to be useful.
