Our take on the Kenwood Excelon X1200M

Power is the name of the game

The Kenwood Excelon "Gouriki" Series amplifiers sport the Japanese characters that stand for "power" and "strength" because these amps are strong and powerful. "Gouriki" amps feature dual power supplies that deliver more consistent voltage so your amp doesn't break a sweat when you're driving your system hard. Unique circuitry analyzes the signal going to and coming back from your speakers to increase the amp's control over cone movement, for tighter, punchier bass.

The X1200M subwoofer amp pumps out up to 1,200 watts RMS to your subwoofers — plenty enough for even the most power-hungry subs to fill your car with bass. Variable low-pass and infrasonic filters help you tune your sub system to sound its best in your vehicle, while preamp outputs send the audio signal to another amp in your system.

Features

CEA 2006 Compliant: The X1200M's power ratings are measured according to the strict standards dictated by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards allow you to accurately compare the rated power output of all CEA 2006-compliant amplifiers, even if they come from different brands. Manufacturers who adhere to the standards can display the CEA 2006 logo on their products and packaging. The amplifier features the following power specifications.

  • 4-Ohm RMS Power Rating: 800 watts x 1-channel in 4-ohm at 20-200Hz with 1% THD
  • 2-Ohm RMS Power Rating: 1200 watts x 1-channel in 2-ohm at 100Hz with 1% THD
  • Max Power Output: 2400 watts x 1-channel Peak

Mono-Power Amp Design: The Kenwood X1200M is designed with specific features to power your subwoofers with a frequency range between 20-200 Hz. This amplifier is not designed to power a full-range speaker.

Class D Amplifier: For subwoofer applications, Class D amps are very efficient and their small size offers installation flexibility. Before amplifying an incoming signal, a Class D amp converts the signal to digital. Digital signals can be amplified very efficiently, so you get a lot more power with less current. Less input current reduces power supply size and generates less waste heat, thus reducing the heat sink size. The amp then converts the amplified signal back to analog.

Dual Sigma Drive: This advanced negative feed back circuit improves damping factor and increases accuracy and sound quality. When a signal is passed to a subwoofer, like a 50Hz note, the speaker will move and create the note. However, because the speaker has mass and a suspension, it will not stop moving once it is in motion. This extra movement (sound) creates a type of distortion that is not part of the original signal. The negative feedback circuit senses this unwanted movement and send out an opposite pulse to stop the speaker like an electronic brake.

Dual Power Supply: This design provides one power supply for positive current and one power supply fro negative current. The result is cleaner voltage source, less failure due to short circuit or power loss due to variances in transformer tolerances, and less transformer noise even when the positive and negative loads are unstable.

Dressing Cover: All of the amplifier's control are located under a removable extruded aluminum dressing cover. The dressing cover also hides the amplifier's connections for a neat installation. The dressing cover can be removed using the included small hex-wrench to unscrew two M4 x 8mm hex-head screws that hold the dressing cover in place.

Cooling Fan: There is a cooling fan, one top vent, and two vents located on each side of the amplifier to help dissipate heat and ensure cool, reliable operation. Make sure not to block these vents or fans when you install the amplifier.

Protection circuitry: The amplifier features protection circuits that will turn the amp off in case of the following events:

  • Speaker output contacts ground
  • Speaker wire short-circuits
  • Unit malfunctions and DC is sent to speaker output
  • Internal temperature is too high
  • Loss of ground of head unit or amp

Controls

Gain Control: The X1200M features a gain control with the following adjustable input sensitivity - 0.2V to 5.0V.

Variable Low Pass Filter: The built-in variable LPF (50-200Hz) allows you to select a variable frequency and remove damaging high frequencies from the subwoofer pathway for more bass output with less distortion.

Infrasonic Filter: The infrasonic filter eliminates inaudible ultra low frequencies that can cause unwanted distortion. The filter can be adjusted between 15Hz to 40Hz depending on the subwoofer and enclosure being used.

Bass Boss Wired Remote Ready: The optional KCA-WR10 wired remote (113KCAWR10, sold separately) allows bass boost frequency adjustments (15-40Hz) and level adjustments (0-18dB) for bass. If you are using two amps, you can use a phone splitter so one bass boost can operate both amps.

Line Out Filter: The Line Out Filter switch changes the audio signal output to the Line Out terminal on the amplifier. You can choose for the X1200M to filter the audio output to the other amplifier connected via the amp's line output, or allow the X1200M to pass a non-filtered audio signal onto the additional amplifier.

Connections

Power And Ground Terminals: The amplifier features hex-head set-screw Power and Ground terminals that will accommodate 6 to 4 AWG wire.

Turn-On Terminal: The amplifier features a hex-head set-screw Turn-On lead terminal that will accommodate 12 to 8 AWG wire.

Speaker Terminals: The amplifier is equipped with two pairs of gold-plated speaker terminals for an easy parallel subwoofer connection.

RCA Inputs: The amplifier features one pair of gold-plated RCA input connections.

RCA Outputs: The amplifier has a set of line level outputs for feeding a stereo audio signal to another amplifier.

Fuse: The amplifier contains three 30-amp fuses.

this is the power house for my two G510_4 subs. this amp powers them
with no problem. i get some sweet low bass from the amp into the subs. i
did have some problems setting the amp to sound good. but don't like that
stop you. I'm not to good at doing that. so i took it in to be done right. they
did better then i did. now the system sounds great. i love this amp.

I got exactly what i paid for, price is high but it is totally worth the 1200rms
watts. I used this to power two 12's alphine type r 500 rms each (SEALED
BOX) and it has no problem at all pushing the 2 subwoofers. Comparing the
amount of power and the price to other amps, you should be able to tell for
yourself that 1200 rms watts is enough to let your neighbors know you got
an arsenal in your car. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND GETTING THE BASS WIRED
REMOTE CONTROL WITH THIS.

Written By Tom, kirksville, mo on Monday, November 02, 2009

bought this amp about 2wks ago and i was very impressed with it!
i bought the factory refurbished one becuz it was so much less and i don't regret that at all! kenwood did a great job making sure it was at least up to it's specs.
i have it pushing (2) 15's and i can't even turn it up all the way yet becuz i'm afraid it'll kill my car but i just gotta get a new alternator and batt.
Very good product! definitely worth the money and don't be afraid of the factory refurb...it's just as good!

this amp is well worth its price. it is a little costly but if you want a lot off bass this is the way to go. i have it driving two 10" and it doesn't even break a sweat and u can hear me coming from down the road. however it draws A LOT of power so if you get this i would suggest getting a cap with it too. if i turn my music up above about 20 then my lights start to go on and off with the bass. any1 who says this isn't worth it needs some wiring lessons or something

Written By David, Mass on Friday, August 27, 2010

this amp is amazing... period. i had an old kenwood amp giving my subs 125w each, they are 300w rms a piece. now i have 600ish going to them and when i connected them the gain is at its minimum and with the bass boost knob all the way up and volume at 23 out of 35 it is overwhelming. i am going to upgrade to 2 new 12" type r's and see what can really happen, now all i need is new subs, a cap and alott of dynamat, and i mean alottttttt

this amp has a step price compared to some but you wont be disappointed. 1200 rms gives you a lot of room to work with upgrading sups, so it is sure to be a sound addition to your car. also the controls are nice and a face plate to hide them.
..not one problem with this amp for over half a year.

What a amp!!!!

Written By CHRIS, Fort Stewart, GA on Friday, May 07, 2010

This amp is awesome! This was a big upgrade from my old Kenwood. If you want bass, this is what you need. I'm pushing two 2000 watts/1000rms per Audiobahn AW1205N. This amp feeds them more power than they can handle. I had it tested. This amp was putting out 1354rms instead of 1000rms into my 2ohm load. Not bad at all. The cooling design is great too. I ride with my volume on 11, but my max volume is 30. That should give you an idea of the power. I highly recommend the bass boost controller (KCAWR10). You get full control of your bass right at your finger tips. You won't be disappointed. Kenwood really did it this time.

I got this amp as a refurbished item and it slam after i hooked it up. Then a day after having it wired up at 2 ohms and the amp was only 3/4 the way up it went into protect mode and wouldn't come out. I thought it had bad sound quality. If I could i wouldn't have gave it any stars.
