Metra

Our take on the Axxess ASWC

Are you looking to install an aftermarket stereo in your car, but want to keep your handy steering wheel audio controls? This ASWC interface from Axxess allows you to connect the steering wheel controls in a wide variety of vehicles to almost any brand of aftermarket stereo, including Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Jensen, Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, and more. (Note: your new stereo must have a 3.5mm steering wheel control or wired remote control input.)

Installation is straightforward - you usually have to connect a few wires to your factory wiring. In most cases, this interface automatically detects which vehicle it's connected to — if not, you can manually program the interface for your vehicle by following a step-by-step process with LED confirmation. Once connected, the adapter's memory retains its programming even if battery power is interrupted. A USB slot lets you keep the ASWC current as updates become available. Dimensions: 2-3/4"W x 11/16"H x 1-7/8"D. Warranty: 1 year.

Installation Note: Please identify your vehicle or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to see if the ASWC adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap or splice into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a Metra Axxess OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this Axxess ASWC adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. Axxess does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Features

Overview: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface (ASWC) lets you retain your vehicle's OEM steering wheel controls when replacing the factory radio with an SWC-compatible aftermarket radio.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to hardwire this adapter into your vehicle's wiring. In most vehicles, the factory radio plug does not have a wire dedicated to the steering wheel audio controls, so splicing is often required. Metra does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Compatibility: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface is universal and can be used on most any vehicle with factory steering wheel controls. The Axxess ASWC supports the following aftermarket headunit manufactures - Pioneer, Sony, Alpine, Kenwood, Eclipse, JVC, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, Visteon, and Valor. The aftermarket headunit must have a SWC (Steering Wheel Control) 3.5mm input.

Note: Please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to see if your vehicle and aftermarket headunit is compatible.

Programming: The ASWC can be programmed in one of two ways. It can be done automatically or manually.

  • Auto Detection: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface has the ability to auto-detect certain vehicles and aftermarket radios. It will preset the steering wheel controls to the aftermarket radio automatically, so no programming is required.
  • Manual Programming: If your vehicle is not auto-detection compatible, you can still manually program the ASWC to your vehicle's factory steering wheel controls and aftermarket headunit.

Reconfiguring Controls: If desired, the ASWC can be manually programmed so you can make your vehicle's steering wheel controls function the way you want them to; limited only by the functions of the aftermarket radio.

LED Feedback: The steering wheel control interface features an integrated LED to indicate programming status.

Non-Volatile Memory: The Axxess ASWC has a non-volatile memory, which means the steering wheel control interface will remember the programming even if the device is disconnected from your vehicle.

Bottom Line --

"THIS PRODUCT DOES EXACTLY AS ADVERTISED"

I installed this product with the Kenwood DNX9980HD inside a 2008 Toyota Sequoia. Prior to installation I did a lot of listening to other customers that had this product via web posts in multiple forums. For Instance 2011 model Kenwood radios use a firmware similar to JVC's so the ASWC will recognize the radio as a JVC. To correct this use a 12K ohm resistor between the brown wire of the ASWC and the blue/yellow SWC wire from the kenwood deck. Run the auto program sequence, all of 15 seconds, get a solid red light on the device. Remove the 12K ohm resistor and reconnect the brown wire to Kenwoods blue/yellow and Lo and behold I have full SWC controls... illumination on SWC buttons, Vol up, Vol down, mode, seek up, seek down, etc. I must say I am 100% satisfied with this product, the total set up took about 15 min. For Toyota vehicles Metra makes an adapter for the ASWC so you dont have to cut any steering wheel control wires and the stock number is 70-8114. You can google Metra 70-8114 and find it pretty easily. No lag or delay between button push and response by the radio. SWC just as responsive as factory radio set up. Very pleased!

Documentation could have been more clear (papers that shipped with item differed from the instructions on Metra's website). I ended up going with the directions from their website and everything went smoothly from there. Unit programmed itself automatically and controls work great with no delay .

This product worked just fine in my 2005 Ford F150 Crew Cab, it was worth the money. If you have any trouble just call or go to the web site for information on your car. But I do not think you will have too.
Pros:
It was just wire, plug & play

I installed this in my 2007 GMC Sierra (Classic Body) along with a new JVC stereo. It went together very easy, but didnt work. I called the 800 number and spoke with a customer service rep (no wait time) who identified my problem. I had connected the divice to the wrong wire. He told me how to fix it and it worked great!
Pros:
Easy Install, Great Customer Support, Ease of Use.
Cons:
I have nothing bad to say.

My 2002 Acura MDX doesn't have a very sophisticated steering wheel control. The module hooked automatically programmed itself and all was fine. Had to call a rep because the instructions were not too clear on tapping into the wiring harness, but that was easily resolved. No problems.
Pros:
did what it's supposed to do. connected automatically with my Acura MDX
Cons:
nothing.

i must have read two or three different references for the install of this product in my car and got three different wiring schematics. Ultimately, the wonderful folks at Crutchfield tech support directed me to yet a different schema and got it to work. I am very happy with it's performance, it just took me a long time to install.

Works fine, once you figure out all the wiring. A little confusing compairing the installation instrutions and the info on their website. But, once installed, works great, very pleased.
