About the Pioneer DEH-P7700MP

Matt Freeman
Simply put, Pioneer's DEH-P7700MP is one heck of a CD receiver! Its stunning Organic EL display, which features full-motion animations and 3D graphics, is a joy to look at. And its built-in high power, wide range of format compatibility, and extensive sound control features make it a delight to have in your car.

You'll never run out of things to listen to with the DEH-P7700MP. Like any CD receiver, it'll play your standard and home-burned discs. But it's in the digital media realm that it really stands out from the crowd. Not only will it play discs loaded with MP3 and WMA, it'll play AAC files, too. It'll feel like your entertainment options are unlimited! And the faceplate features a 7-way rotary commander, an invaluable tool for sorting through your music files, so you can find your favorite tracks and albums quickly.

Pioneer packed this receiver with a MOSFET50 amp for full-force playback. Meanwhile, Easy EQ lets you dial in a preset EQ curve for a quick sound fix, or fine-tune with the 3-band parametric EQ. For a more engaging listening experience, you can also activate Sound Focus EQ, which blocks the mids and highs from the rear speakers, thereby pulling the soundstage to the front seats, right where you want it. To maximize performance, low- and high-pass filters are built into the receiver.

System expansion is definitely in the cards, too. Three sets of preamp outputs are just waiting to accommodate external amps. The DEH-P7700MP is also satellite radio-compatible; add an XM or SIRIUS tuner, antenna, and subscription, and you'll open up a whole new, coast-to-coast entertainment experience. If terrestrial radio is your thing, you'll be amazed by the Supertuner IIID+. Yep, Pioneer took their world-famous AM/FM tuner and made it even better!

Features

Deep Blue OEL Display: The deep blue OEL (Organic Electroluminescent) display features incredible brightness, clear readability, wide-angle viewing and full-motion 3D graphics. Because OEL creates its own electroluminescent light, its brightness is resistant to washing out in sunlight.

Entertainment Display Modes: You can choose from the following Entertainment Display Modes:

  • Background Visual: In Background Visual mode, you can select one of the following background visuals: Background Visual 1 (crashing waves), Background Visual 2 (moving strings of text), Background Visual 3 (streak of light), or Background Visual 4 (moving patterns of light).
  • Background Picture: In Background Picture mode, you can select one of the following background pictures: Background Picture 1 (vertical and horizontal lines of light), Background Picture 2 (different geometric shapes), Background Picture 3 (illuminated arrows), or Background Picture 4 (dolphins).
  • Level Meter: In Level Meter mode, two analog VU meters are displayed.
  • Level Indicator: In Level Indicator mode, you can select one of the following level indicators: Level Indicator 1 (scrolling vertical bars of light) or Level Indicator 2 (scrolling squares of light).
  • ASL Effect Level: This mode displays the Automatic Sound Levelizer effect level.
  • Battery Voltage: This mode displays the current battery voltage.
  • Movie Screen: In Movie Screen mode, you can select one of the following movie screens: Movie Screen 1 (vehicles racing through the city streets) or Movie Screen 2 (jigsaw puzzle and swimming dolphins).

Display Brightness: The display brightness can be adjusted from 0 to 15.

Demo Modes: This unit has a Reverse Demo Mode and a Feature Demo Mode. In Reverse Demo Mode, if you do not perform an operation for a period of 30 seconds, the display begins reversing colors. It continues reversing colors every 10 seconds until a button is pushed. When the unit is turned off, the Feature Demo Mode is activated. The Feature Demo Mode displays the unit's different features and capabilities using moving graphics.

7-Way Rotary Commander: The 7-Way Rotary Commander is like a musical joystick, allowing you to control 90% of the unit's functions and features.

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: This receiver is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output.

Satellite Radio Tuner Compatible: This unit can control an optional Pioneer XM or SIRIUS tuner (sold separately).

Compatible with Optional TV Tuner: This head unit can control an optional Pioneer TV tuner (not supplied).

Easy EQ Curves: This model has "SUPER BASS", "POWERFUL", "NATURAL", "VOCAL", "CUSTOM", and "FLAT" preset EQ curves. The "CUSTOM" curve is one that you create and store in memory. A separate "CUSTOM" curve can be created and stored in memory for each source.

EQ-EX: This feature allows you to boost the current EQ setting for even more powerful sound.

3-Band Parametric Equalizer: This unit includes a 3-band parametric EQ with Selectable Q Factor. You may select a low (40, 80, 100 or 160Hz), mid (200, 500, 1k or 2kHz) and high frequency (3.15k, 8k, 10k or 12.5kHz) to boost or cut within a range of -6dB to +6dB. The Q factor (slope of the boost or cut) may be selected from one of the following four options: 2N (narrow), 1N, 1W and 2W (wide). Selecting a narrow (steep) Q factor results in frequencies around the center frequency to be affected less by the boost or cut than they are with a wide Q factor. This feature is useful for taming frequency response problems caused by the dimensions, materials and speaker locations of a vehicle.

Selectable Bass and Treble Cut-off Frequencies: The cut-off frequencies for the bass and treble controls can be set independently of the 3-band parametric equalizer adjustments. The bass cut-off frequency can be set to 40Hz, 63Hz, 100Hz or 160Hz. The treble cut-off frequency can be set to 2.5kHz, 4kHz, 6.3kHz or 10kHz. The bass and treble controls have an adjustment range of -6 to +6.

Automatic Sound Levelizer (ASL): During driving, road noise in the car changes according to the driving speed and road conditions. The Automatic Sound Levelizer monitors the road noise and automatically increases the unit's volume level, if the road noise becomes greater. The sensitivity of this feature can be set to one of five levels (low, mid-low, mid, mid-high, or high).

Adjustable Loudness: You can select "Low", "Mid" or "High" for different levels of loudness compensation.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.

High-pass Filter: When you don't want sound in the subwoofer frequency range output from the front and rear speakers, you may activate the built-in high-pass filter. You may select a filter frequency of 50Hz, 80Hz, or 125Hz.

Subwoofer/Non-fading Preouts: In addition to the front and rear preamp outputs, there is one set of outputs that may be set for "subwoofer" or "non-fading" output. When set to "non-fading", the signal is full range and the output level is user selectable from -6 to +6. When set to "subwoofer", the outputs are non-fading, and they may be set for normal or reverse phase, 50Hz/80Hz/125Hz low-pass output, and the level is user selectable from -6 to +6.

Rear Channel Output: You can choose to use the rear channel output (speaker and preout) for full-range speaker or subwoofer. If you select "subwoofer", you can connect a 4-ohm subwoofer directly to each rear speaker lead without using an external amplifier.

Supertuner IIID+ Enhanced Performance Tuner: This version of Pioneer's tuner technology takes FM and AM radio performance to a new level. Called Supertuner IIID+, it delivers significant improvement in the following areas:

  • cancels FM multi-path noise often found in downtown areas, resulting in a much cleaner signal
  • cancels AM noise, which can occur when you're driving where the AM signal is weakest
  • improves sensitivity, locking in on the signals from your selected stations
  • improves the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio and decreases distortion, especially when the signal is weak. The result is a higher-quality signal.

iTunes AAC Playback: The DEH-P7700MP can play CDs with AAC files ripped using Apple's iTunes Media Player. This unit can play AAC files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. AAC files with a transmission rate from 16-320 kbps are supported.

Note: This unit can play "unprotected" AAC files ripped into iTunes, but it cannot play the "protected" AAC files downloaded from the online iTunes Music Store.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported.

Compression and BMX Functions: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "BMX" functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the CD player. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortion caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "BMX" function controls sound reverberations to give playback a fuller sound.

CD-R/CD-RW Skip Function: Some CD-R/W recorders allow you to assign skip ID tags to tracks that you never want to hear. When a track has been assigned a track skip ID, compatible units will recognize the skip ID information and skip over that track. This player recognizes track skip IDs, so CD-R and CD-RW discs with skip ID information will be played back as intended.

Disc Title Memory: Titles of up to 10 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 48 discs. When a compatible changer is connected, titles of up to 10 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 100 discs in the changer.

Optional Aux Input: When used with item 130CDRB10 (sold separately) or item 130CDRB20 (sold separately), this unit can accept input from an auxiliary source, such as a portable CD or MD player. When item 130CDRB10 is used, a CD changer cannot be connected to this unit. Item 130CDRB20 allows you to connect an optional Pioneer CD changer and an auxiliary source to this unit.

Dimmer Feature: When the illumination wire of this unit receives power and the dimmer feature has been turned on in the "Initial Setting" menu, the display will dim to a preset level. When the power and constant wires are connected and the illumination wire is supplied with voltage (when you turn your lights on), the button illumination remains on even if the unit is turned off completely.

Warning Tone: If the front panel is not detached from the head unit within four seconds of turning off the ignition, a warning tone will sound. This feature can be turned On or Off.

Changer Controls

ITS (Instant Track Selection) Programming: The ITS function can be used to program automatic playback of up to 99 tracks per disc for up to 100 discs. With changers sold before the CDX-P1250 and CDX-P650, up to 24 tracks can be stored in the playlist.

Disc Title Memory: Titles of up to 10 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 100 discs.

Disc Title List: This feature allows you to display disc titles that you have entered. From the list, you can select a disc for playback.

CD Text Display: When used with a CD Text compatible Pioneer CD changer, this unit will display the titles of CD Text encoded discs that are played in the changer. When playing a CD Text disc on a CD Text compatible changer, you cannot switch to the Disc Title Input mode. CD Text disc titles, artist names and track titles longer than 14 characters may be scrolled to reveal the entire string of text.

CD Sound Quality Adjustment: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "DBE" (dynamic bass emphasis) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the changer. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortions caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "DBE" function boosts bass frequencies to give your music a more full sound.

Note: For these functions to work, they must be supported by the Pioneer CD changer.

DVD Operation: This unit can control an optional Pioneer DVD player or DVD changer.

Note

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has not been turned on, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. This unit's clock is "keyed" only when the Clock Display has been turned on. When power is supplied to both power wires and the illumination wire is not receiving voltage, nothing illuminates if the Clock Display has not been turned on and the unit is off.

Note: When the power and constant wires are connected and the illumination wire is supplied with voltage (when you turn your lights on), the button illumination remains on even if the unit is turned off completely.
