About the Pioneer ND-BC8

Alexander H.

While you're at it...

There's no better time to install a backup camera in your vehicle than when you're already installing a new DVD or navigation receiver. Take advantage of your in-dash video capabilities by gaining a wide-angle view of what's behind you every time you shift into reverse. The Pioneer ND-BC8 backup cam enhances your rear view by counteracting harsh overexposure on bright days as well as giving you a sharp picture in low light.

Installing this camera yourself? Here's what you should know.

What does it do? Unless otherwise noted, a backup camera is only intended for use backing up your vehicle. (If you require a front-view or constant rear-view camera, check for that capability.)

What tools and supplies will I need? A panel tool, a wire cutter/stripper, a soldering iron, and a rosin-core solder with heat shrink tubing are recommended, along with whatever tools are needed to remove the radio from the dash.

How much wiring is required? Wiring instructions vary from camera to camera. Some cameras have power wiring that can only be connected near the radio. Others let you power the camera at compatible reverse lights. In all cases, the camera must be wired for power and ground, the camera's video output must be connected to the radio/monitor, and the radio/monitor must be connected to a reverse trigger in your vehicle. Some radio replacement interfaces supply a reverse trigger wire for the radio -- using that wire to power your camera will damage the interface.

Will the included video cable be long enough? You'll need to route the camera's video cable from its mounting location outside your vehicle into your vehicle's cabin and all the way to the screen in the dash. This often requires drilling a small hole in your vehicle or filing some metal and or plastic. You'll also need to estimate the length of cable needed to run from the camera to the dash, which will not be a straight shot. Each camera's cable length is listed.

Note: A rear-view camera provides an additional view when reversing your vehicle. It is intended to be used in conjunction with your rear- and side-view mirrors to give a fuller picture of what's behind you. It is not intended as a replacement for your mirrors.

Features

Compatibility: The Pioneer ND-BC8 universal rear-view camera is designed for use with Pioneer and other manufacturer in-dash Multimedia/Navigation head units that feature an integrated monitor and rear-view camera composite video input.

Note: This rearview camera is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rearview camera when backing up. In addition to using the rearview camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

Waterproof Aluminum Chassis: The camera is built into a compact waterproof aluminum case, making it perfect for mounting outside the vehicle.

CMOS Image Sensor: The ND-BC8 universal rear-view camera utilizes a 1/4" color CMOS image sensor that has approximately 310,000 pixels to deliver a high quality picture. A CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensor offers improved resolution and eliminates the vertical light "smear" phenomenon that occurs when a camera using a CCD sensor is exposed to a very bright light source or direct sunlight.

Wide Angle Lens: The 129° horizontal and 105° vertical viewing angles provide an excellent near field view of anything behind you.

Automatic Sensitivity Compensation: The camera automatically adjusts to the available light, from 0.9 lux to 100,000 lux. The 0.9 lux rating ensures you'll have visibility at night in low light, while the 100,000 lux rating means the picture won't be washed out in bright sunlight.

Mounting: The rear view camera comes supplied with a pre-installed self-adhesive bracket which can tilt the camera up and down.

A
Yes it will, it is designed for pioneer as long as you have a backup camera connection this camera is compatible.
herbert c.  Mar 01, 2022
A
It worked great with my 2550NEX head unit. I don't imagine you'll have a problem with it. It uses simple RCA style cabling to plug into the head unit. Check to see if your 2440 accepts a backup camera with an RCA jack.

I don't know the specs but I love having a rearview cam on my commercial truck. The daylight resolution is very good. Night time is much less but at this price point, fine.
jon  Sep 06, 2021
A
The resolution will depend on the screen you use. I installed this on my tundra with a pioneer AVH-1550 and the image is crystal clear. Better than the stock camera my Camry came with.

traci  Jul 26, 2021

It's grainy but adequate. Very clear in daylight. Better than the wife's Lexus cam. Love having the cam on my cargo van.

Red wire goes to purple and white normally. (Reverse trigger) I have bought 3 of these and it's my favorite one. You can always call Crutchfield tech support they are awesome and they can get vehicle specific.

Q
Is the back up camera ND-BC8 compatible with a ND-BC5? We need to just replace the camera/lens part. Will BC8 work or is there another camera part that is more compatible? Thanks
denise  Jun 04, 2021
1 answer
A
It sounds like you want to only replace the camera and reuse the wiring that runs to the radio location. We did not research that cable's connection to be able to answer your question and recommend contacting Pioneer using 800-228-7221 to see if they can confirm
jason  Jun 19, 2021 (Staff)
Q
Can the ND-BC8 be mounted in spare tire of jeep wrangler as is meaning what comes already in the box or do I have to purchase a mounting bracket?
kevin  Jan 09, 2021
1 answer
A
If I remember correctly, there is no cover plate that goes in between the spare tire and the lug nuts that hold it in place. I cannot think of a way to mount this backup camera in that location with the included parts and expect you will want to get a mounting bracket designed to help install a backup camera in this location.
jason  Jan 25, 2021 (Staff)
Q
Does it include a wire to tap into the rear reverse light so it automatically switches on when I reverse car?
zeyad  Sep 29, 2020

Yes when you switch to reverse the camera comes on. You can also wire it to come on when you want.

kirk  Nov 21, 2019
A
No. Not unless your head unit has the capabilities. Camera simply plugs into back of the head unit. No storage capabilities on camera.
john  Nov 21, 2019
A
No, it is just a camera. It has a cord that carries power and video signal, which must be plugged into something else (such as an AV receiver) for anything to happen.
mark c  Nov 21, 2019
Q
Will this work Pioneer AVIC -W8400NEX to get that dual camera feature?? It only says for rear camera even though receivers can do dual cameras.
andres  Jan 07, 2019
1 answer
A
I cannot see why it will not work. As long as you say your receiver has dual input Ports, the camera does not know if it's a front or rear. The receiver will be able to distinguish the two cameras
michael  Jan 07, 2019
Q
Is the Pioneer ND-BC8 lens glass or plastic?

if put on a Pioneer MVH-200EX does it show guidelines?

Yes
kyle  Mar 01, 2018

I imagine it is. I've had mine for almost two years in the rain and snow. Picture quality is the same as when new.
zachary  Mar 01, 2018
A
Well, not water-proof (like under water in your Jeep as your fording a river). However, you can wash your car and spray it with water and it's no big deal.
john  Mar 01, 2018
Q
Will this work with a Sony AX-AV100 Receiver?
brad  Sep 24, 2017
1 answer
A
This is a universal camera, and should be able to work with any Head unit that has a video input. I do not have the exact head unit that you do, but if it has a back up camera jack or a video input, should work fine. You will have to POWER the camera though. The unit must be wired into the reverse light circuit and grounded under the dash or to the frame.

Wondering what the ideal location to mount on a 2008 dodge 1500 would be?
bernard  Jul 18, 2017
4 answers
A
I don't have a pickup, but you might want to put it just above the hitch (if you have one). You get a 2-fer. Can sight the ball to the trailer receptacle, and have good visibility too. Have it above the bumper (protect from rocks / dirt, but low enough for you to easily run the wire under the bed.
john  Jul 20, 2017
A
I have a small car i place on the back plate works great
danny  Jul 20, 2017
A
Most pickups mount the camera at the tailgate handle. As long as you can see the rear bumper from where you choose to mount, you'll be OK.
zachary  Jul 20, 2017
A
On my truck application I mounted in in the upper center of license plate area on bumper. Can attach to bumper or I riveted it to license plate.Camera angles up and down for best view.
nathan  Jul 19, 2017
Q
Will this be compatible with Boss BV760B stereo. Also i have a Rav4 2010. The spare tires might get in the way if i install it near my license plate. Can i install it somewhere else so the spare tire is not blocking some of my view? Thanks
erin  Jun 17, 2017
1 answer
A
The Boss features the standard composite video (RCA) input for connecting a rear view camera and the Pioneer ND-BC8 camera offers the same composite video connection. So, yes, the two are compatible. The Pioneer camera comes packaged with a self adhesive bracket which can tilt the camera up & down so, you can secure it in the best spot to get the angle you'll need. I hope that helps. Q
Is it compatible with Garmin Dezel 760?
birdie  Apr 29, 2017
1 answer
A
The Dezl 760 should offer a 3.5mm video input on it's mounting cradle. This allows you to connect a rear-view camera (like this Pioneer) but you will need a Composite Video (RCA) to 3.5mm (minijack) adapter for the connection. I hope that helps. Does this work good with AVH-291BT?
sphereboy  Nov 04, 2016
4 answers
A
I'm not sure, I have the AVH-X4600BT. But this camera is extremely clear and looks better than a lot of the factory systems that I've seen.
kimmar  Nov 18, 2016
A
Yes
zachary  Nov 08, 2016
A
I am not familiar with the AVH-291BT. However, I did install this camera on a 2006 4Runner that did not come with a back up camera originally. This camera will work with any head unit that has a backup camera interface. The camera gives a very good picture during the day (at night picture is a little degraded), but well worth the money. I liked the fact that you can tilt this camera, rather than having it in a fixed position. Mounted well and never moved due to vibration or just from being on the rear hatch. You will have to provide power from the backup light system and a ground.
john  Nov 08, 2016
A
I have no problem with it. The only knock on it that I have is that it's wide view which makes things seem farther back than they actually are. Which might be all cameras. But had it a year and have had no problems.
robert  Nov 07, 2016
Q
Is there any way to set this up so I can manually choose to look at the camera/ not have to be in reverse to use it? I want to mount to the front of my lifted truck, I have an avh-x7700bt.
jdjuker  Oct 03, 2016
3 answers
A
Power the camera with 12V constant instead of the power from the reverse lamps. The head unit has an option to switch to camera view.
zachary  Oct 03, 2016
A
I think it would depend on your receiver. I've got the AppRadio 4 (SPH-DA120) from Pioneer, and there's a mode to leave the camera display on while the car is on. I used it on a camping trip when my car was loaded up quite a bit and I had reduced visibility out the rear window. It definitely came in handy. I'd check in your radio's manual to see if there's a similar feature.
alexander  Oct 03, 2016
A
Not sure...I guess it would depend on the radio you use!

I am looking to add a camera for my trailer. I currently ave the AVH 2800 with a back up camera for the truck. What would I need to hook up a camera for trailering purposes?
robert  Jul 17, 2016

This camera is hard-wired, so is probably not a good choice for mounting on a trailer. A wireless camera might be a better bet.

what other equipment/software would be needed to show the guidelines when paired with the AVH-3800BHS. Aren't these guidelines crucial for safety? Would it not just make sense to include the piece? Should I buy a different backup camera? Which one would you suggest?

Thanks for your question. For information on comparing two or more models I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences and help you make the best choice for your system and your budget.

Q
When combined with an Avh-x3800bhs would this show the guidelines when viewing on the head unit display?
donald  Feb 29, 2016

A
The Pioneer ND-BC8 in combination with the AVH-X3800BH wouldn't provide any distance guidelines; however we do have some cameras that provide distance guidelines to any video screen unit, including the AVH-X3800BH. If you want to discuss those options, you can reach out to our Product Advisors--either by phone at 888.955.6000 or by chat/email using the "Contact Us" link at the top of our website.
