Pioneer

Our take on the Pioneer DEH-P6100BT

You want a car stereo that plays your favorite media and offers easy control over your car's audio system. Pioneer's DEH-P6100BT CD receiver delivers all that, along with the convenience and safety of Bluetooth® for hands-free calling.

Keep your hands on the wheel
Built-in Bluetooth connectivity means you won't have to fumble for your phone when you get a call. The receiver mutes for an incoming call and you can talk just by pressing a button on the receiver. The DEH-P6100BT will download your phone's address book automatically when you pair it with your phone, so you'll have all the important numbers you need in the receiver's memory for one-touch outbound calls.

Audio excellence
The DEH-P6100BT really shines in sound quality. The 3-band equalizer allows plenty of adjustments to your music's tonal balance, while the Sound Retriever breathes new life into flat-sounding music files by restoring information lost in compression. High-pass and low-pass filters let you adjust the range of frequencies you send to your speakers. When your iPod is connected to the USB input, the receiver bypasses your iPod's built-in digital-to-analog converter, using its high-quality DAC to deliver your music files with the highest fidelity possible.

System options
Build a high-powered car audio system by connecting amps and subs to the three sets of high-voltage preamp outputs. You can connect a satellite radio to open up a world of music, sports, and news programming, or add an HD Radio™ tuner to access the improved sound quality broadcast by participating stations. However you like to listen to your music, the DEH-P6100BT's probably got you covered.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility with this receiver may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Display Features

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. If the front panel is not detached from the headunit within four seconds of turning off the ignition, a warning tone sounds. You can turn off the warning tone. A face case is included with the unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

LCD Display: The DEH-P6100BT features a black background with a 13-character text (white) display which takes advantage of MP3, WMA, iPod, XM Radio, and Sirius, plus CD Text-encoded discs. This display makes it easy to read and cycle through the song title, artist, and other text used by these sources.

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.

Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-P6100BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-P6100BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-P6100BT are as follows:

  • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
  • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
  • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

Sound Retriever: The Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Sound Retriever effect.

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-P6100BT is equipped with a 3-band parametric EQ with 6 preset EQ settings. You can boost or cut each frequency band by +/- 12dB at 2dB intervals. Features of the Easy EQ include:

  • Selectable Center Frequencies:
    • Low: 40, 80, 100, or 160 Hz
    • Mid: 200, 500, 1k, or 2k Hz
    • High: 3k, 8k, 10k or 12k Hz
  • Preset EEQ Settings: Powerful, Super Bass, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat
  • Selectable Q Factors: 2 Narrow, 1 Narrow, 1 Wide, and 2 Wide

Selectable Loudness Levels: Loudness compensates for deficiencies in the low and high frequencies at low volumes. You can choose from three levels of loudness:

  • Low: +3.5dB (100Hz), +3dB (10kHz)
  • Mid: +10dB (100Hz), +6.5dB (10kHz)
  • High: +11dB (100Hz), +11dB (10kHz)

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6 (Gain: +12dB to 0dB).

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Three 4-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-P6100BT is equipped with three 4-Volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The front and rear speakers are fading with high-pass crossover filters, while the subwoofer output is non-fading with a low-pass crossover filter.

  • Front and Rear Preamp Outputs: If you do not want low frequency sounds to play from the front or rear speaker preamp outputs (or speaker outputs), you can turn on the 12dB/octave High Pass Filter. The HPF has a selectable cutoff frequency (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz). Only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output through the speakers.
  • Subwoofer Output: The unit has a pair of dedicated non-fading RCA subwoofer outputs with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level. When the subwoofer output is turned on, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

AM/FM Tuner

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 levels of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

CD Playback

MP3/WMA/WAV Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA/WAV files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps and WMA files with a bit rate from 5-320 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

AAC Decoding: This unit will playback AAC files encoded by iTunes recorded onto CDs, however files purchased from the iTunes Music Store (.m4p file extension) are not compatible. Tracks recorded at transmission rates of 8-320 kbps are playable on this unit.

List Features: The List feature allows you to track the title list, folder list, file list, preset channel list, or disc title list, depending upon the source. Once the List button is pressed, you can turn the multi-control knob to view each item on the list. To select the highlighted item, you can press the multi-control. This allows you to quickly make selections from most any source.

Disc Naming: You can use the disc title input feature to store up to 48 CD titles in the unit's memory. Each title can be up to 10 characters long.

External Device Connection

Built-In Bluetooth: The DEH-P6100BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth technology allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver. When you're not utilizing hands-free calling, you can use Bluetooth Wireless Technology to control and listen to a Bluetooth audio player. Up to 5 Bluetooth-compatible mobile devices can be registered to this head unit.

  • Bluetooth Hands-free Communication: The headunit supports Bluetooth's Hands-Free Profile (HFP) communication. During your wireless phone call, you can talk into the head unit's included microphone, and listen to the other party through the vehicle's speaker system. The microphone features a 16.5' cord that plugs into the back of the radio, and comes with a visor-mount clip. The receiver offers five microphone volume levels to keep phone calls sounding loud and clear. You can answer a call manually or setup the unit to answer the call automatically while muting your music. You can even transfer your entire phonebook at a single time to the head unit, which can memorize up to 1,000 entries of reach user (max. 5 devices can be stored in the phone book; each independent entry can hold five phone numbers and genres). You can also dial a phone number directly (using the unit's multi-control dial or remote), from a call history list (the 80 most recent calls dialed, received and missed are stored), or by voice recognition (your phone must support voice tags).
  • Bluetooth Audio Players: The headunit also supports Bluetooth's wireless Audio Streaming Profile (A2DP) and Bluetooth's Audio Control Profile (AVRCP). These features allow you to wirelessly transmit music from your Bluetooth compatible cell-phone or portable audio player to the DEH-P6100BT so you can listen to your stored music files through your vehicle's audio system.

Note: Not all Bluetooth-capable phones are compatible with this receiver.

This unit can play MP3/WMA/WAV/AAC files stored on a USB Mass Storage device in FAT16 or FAT32 file system formats. MP3 and AAC files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, and WMA files with a bit rate from 5-320 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 6,000 folders and 65,535 files per USB device are recognized by this unit.

iPod Direct Control: The DEH-P6100BT can control and playback songs on an iPod. This unit supports select iPods with a standard Dock Connector. You can connect your iPod using the unit's front-panel USB input, along with a dock connector-to-USB cable, such as the one supplied with your iPod, or the optional 130CDIU50 (sold separately).  When connected via USB, you can choose to control the iPod from the head unit or the iPod itself (you can still change songs from the head unit, even when you are controlling the iPod manually). You can perform multiple search functions, including playlist, genre, artist, album, and alphabetical searches. The headunit will also display your iPod's music file information, including Play Time, Song Title, Artist Name, and Album Title. While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the USB connection will power and charge your iPod. Awesome Upgrade!

Written By Prashant, San Ramon, CA on Thursday, April 23, 2009

I just got the Pioneer DEH-P6100BT installed in my 08 Mazda 3 professionally yesterday and thus far I'm loving it. I've got Infinity Reference components up front, Sony XS-V680HP full range speakers in the back, an Infinity BassLink II sub, and an Alpine MRP-F300 4-channel amp hooked to the front/rear speakers (all from Crutchfield!).

Sound Quality: Amazingly crisp and powerful. wow.

Connectivity: iPod control is fast, you get all the ID3 tags, plays everything. Get an inverter if you want to connect usb hdd (hu doesn't give enough current). You don't get thrown back to the first playlist when you back out from the song list.

Bluetooth: Works great, mic is strong.

Other: Great manual, great remote.

Overall: Just a great great job by Pioneer. Everything works WELL! Highly recommended!

Does It All - Well

What more can you ask for in this unit other than variable illumination? Everything that it offers works well (bluetooth, ipod, flash drive access etc....). So far I haven't seen one glitch or bug in my unit and I've explored it pretty extensively so far. In fact I have to admit that some of the features work better/more conveniently than I expected. Sure, there are some design drawbacks (like the absence of preset buttons etc...), but when you look at a picture of the unit, you know what you're getting into.

Pioneer DEH-P6100BT

Written By Greffy, Bismarck, ND on Thursday, July 30, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

I just purchased this head unit from Crutchfield about 2 weeks ago and I couldn't be happier! I was able to get an open box unit (not sure what this means because it was brand new), plus the wiring harness, a dash pocket, and the installation guide custom to my Subaru Legacy for a great price with free shipping!
Currently, I'm using the stock 6.5" speakers and just added an 8" Kicker Solobaric L5 subwoofer.

Source Options:
Radio - sounds just as good as the factory except the EQ options extend the already great sound
CD- I would recommend creating MP3 CD's if you don't have an MP3 player. I was able to fit about 140 songs on the CD. I'm no audiophile, but I can definitely tell when there is distortion/bad quality. All my MP3's are at least 256kbps which sound awesome. iPod- iPod Touch 2nd gen running the 2.2.1 software works amazing! I'm not a fan of using the head unit to control the iPod, so I just switch it over to the iPod control with is very slick.
Bluetooth Music- No review.
Bluetooth Calls- The included 16' microphone allowed me to position the microphone right up by my visor. The connection was very fast and the calls sounded great. The other end could not tell that I wasn't talking to the actual phone!

This unit is definitely worth the money... IF you are the type of person who's willing to read instructions. I had a pioneer in my old car, and was used to the dial control, so there wasn't much to learn. However, I would recommend reading the instructions!

Interface is fine, read the manual!

What a great product! Others have written about the difficulty of the user interface of this unit. I found if you just read and understand the manual, the operation is a snap. Others have also made comments that the designers didn't take into consideration that people would be operating this unit while driving, I beg to differ. Once you know how to operate the multifunction controller, I find that I don't have to take my eyes off the road as often. I also purchased the wireless steering wheel remote which helps a great deal. I definitely like this unit 100% better than my old Sony. The Bluetooth is great, no problems at all! I have the Sirius and HD tuners daisy chained to this unit also. What a difference in sound quality with the HD tuner! The Ipod connectivity is another great feature. I find with the SWR, I can control the Ipod with ease. Overall extremely happy with this purchase!

Works with iPhone 3.0

Written By Daniel, SF, California on Sunday, June 21, 2009

using my 6100bt for about a week. so far so good.

i'm no audiophile. i just wanted a decent, straight forward to use HU that
works smoothly with my iphone that wouldn't cost too much. i'm pretty
happy with the 6100bt.

first, it works great with my iphone 3g (OS 3.0) which was very important to
me since i use iphone all the time listen to music & podcasts (adam carolla
podcast ftw). you connect it with the standard apple usb cord that came
with your iphone and you'll be able to control your music through the HU,
the remote, or the iphone directly (all simultaneous too). i will note that it is
a pain to find songs (or control the unit in general) through the faceplate. i
rely on the remote control and the iphone for almost all my controls. I rarely
touch the faceplate for anything.

the "Advanced Sound Retriever" function that suppose to restore mp3
sound quality works really well too.

you can also use iphone 3.0's new stereo BT ability to listen to music
wireless through bluetooth. it's not as great as i thought it would be. you
can only pause/play with the HU controls when using BT and the sound
quality isn't as good because "Advanced Sound Retriever" can't be turned
on for BT Audio.

but, BT for phone calls is great. the unit comes with a long wired mic (kind
of annoying) you position on your blinds (or wherever). The sound quality is
really clear. people can't tell i'm driving and i never have to repeat myself
or ask "can you hear me now?"

Just installed this headunit in my 03 Ford Superduty. All of the features on this unit work really well! There are a lot of options available that I am still learning but the manual explains them pretty well.. The variety of available music sources is outstanding and installation is very straightforward.

If there is a downside to it, it is that the microphone for the Bluetooth apparently lets in a lot of background noise. That may be able to be adjusted out, I don't know just yet but the people I have spoken to over it all say it sounds like I am driving with my window down (and in one case, I wasn't driving at all but just idling in a parking lot). A noise cancelling microphone would be a good option (if it exists)...

Pioneer DEH-P6100BT

Overall the unit fills my needs. However, as a designer, the ergonomics and usability of the unit receives 2 stars.

Back to the positive - the USB -iPod interface is great. Exactly what I was looking for. Love the fact that the iPod shuts down and starts up from the same spot. Click wheel takes a little getting used to but after figuring it out, it works fine. My car has been broken into (in San Francisco not Walnut Creek) so the detachable face is a great feature. The first place I took it to for installation was not up to speed on the installation of this unit in my car. They kept insisting on a different wire harness. Crutchfield customer service set me straight and I was able to explain the installation to the second installer with a complete understanding of how to install the unit. The installer needed about 2.5 hours to perform the work. The Bluetooth app is great. I talk on the phone a lot in the car and everyone I talk to on a regular basis have commented on the clarity of the new unit. Not a single problem with connectivity or pairing with the iPhone...works like a charm.

On the downside - the remote control is not intuitive and definitely not something I would have paid extra for. The controls are not similar to the in-dash unit. The remote is directional so you need to be pointing it at the dash for it to work.

I have recommended the product to friends and colleagues. Great service from Crutchfield, as always.

good: Bluetooth Audio - playing music on my Storm through my car
stereo is killer. Had my brother over and I showed him "Slacker Radio" we
paired his phone and just like that we're listening to internet radio...Hard to
beat that.
The USB is also pretty cool, I can access all my music on the Storm or my
Ipod..lots of choices here.
Making phone calls is Ok but the microphone seems to be weak. I've moved
it closer to me so hopefully that will improve.
bad: The controls are hard to operate while driving, I find myself using the
remote more often then not. The big issue is this. When you hook up an HD
Adapter you lose the tuner option on your stereo instead it is replaced
with HD Radio...apparently this is typical....didn't know. The HD Tuner
I bought is not great (GEX-P10HD). FM stations come in nicely but AM is a
different story. It's very choppy reception, you'll either here it or you
won't...Since I didn't know that the HD tuner overrides the standard
turner, and apparently neither did CrutchField, they sent me a Y-adapter
which I put in to no effect. If Pioneer is eliminating the ability to access the
head-unit tuner then they should atleast make a better, more sensitive HD
tuner. Maybe they do and I just need to replace it for the one I bought. In
any event, if you listen to a lot of talk radio or sports radio on AM don't
choose this HD adapter. The tuner on the unit itself is aok. The head-unit I
love - the HD tuner not so much

Great Value!!

Pros: Great sound and features, bluetooth calls are great, front USB is good, easy install.

Cons: Automatic connect of Bluetooth doesnt always seem to work consistently, but once bluetooth is connected it works very well.

*I want to first thank Crutchfield for their awesome support on this install. I have never installed a radio before on a car. In an effort to save money I was willing to give this install my first try. I have a 2005 Honda S2000. I Installed a Pioneer XM tuner and also installed replacement Polk speakers in the doors. Crutchfield gave me great installation instructions with pictures and also answered my calls quickly when I had any questions during my install.

*As far as the Pionner DEH 6100BT, I was looking for a while to replace the stock Honda unit and was drawn to the 6100 for its Bluetooth capability and front USB input. The Unit works very well and after several days of use I have gotten comfortable with the controls. The S2000 is a very loud car and has a harsh ride, so I have been very impressed with the Bluetooth Quality for phone calls. Obviously many people know that I am in the car when I call, but nobody has yet complained that they can't hear me well. My only complaint about the bluetooth is it is a little inconsistent as far as automatically connecting to my phone, but then again that could be my phone. I am looking forward to eventually getting an Iphone or so and actually being able to stream Audio through the bluetooth.

The features and quality are every bit as good as other reviewers have said. However, I miss the simple push button, turn dial controls from years gone by. Nothing about the controls on this unit are intuitive (save the volume control). I use the remote so i don't have to pull over and try to read the labels on the controls. The Ipod connection works great, but the receiver preempts the Ipod read out and the unit doesn't display the music that is playing. As one reviewer said, you had better not bump the wrong control when you're driving, or you will find new features you never knew about before.

If I were thirty years younger these probably wouldn't be major issues.
