Our take on the Panasonic TC-P50G10

Just as THX-certified A/V receivers and speakers can deliver more theater-like sound, a THX-certified HDTV like Panasonic's TC-P50G10 can provide a more cinematic picture. This set's THX refinements make it easy to enjoy an exceptionally accurate, lifelike picture when viewing your favorite movies and TV shows.

THX enhancements close the gap between movie screen and TV screen
THX's strict requirements are based on tests that measure a TV's display quality (resolution, brightness level, color accuracy) and video processing (scaling, deinterlacing). To earn a passing grade, the TC-P50G10 had to meet performance benchmarks for both standard- and high-definition video, ensuring that all your sources will look their best. Simply choose the "THX" picture setting to see a beautifully balanced picture — without paying for an expensive professional calibration.

Panasonic's 2009 plasma TVs eliminate motion blur for a clearer picture
All 1080p HDTVs have the same number of pixels, but they don't all deliver full picture resolution at all times. Plasma and LCD TVs are equally good at displaying still images, but when the action picks up the pace, plasma has a clear advantage. Panasonic's 2009 plasmas employ improved panel drive electronics that flash the screen's pixels on and off at high speed — 25% faster than last year's models. Video motion looks effortlessly smooth and clear.

Advanced "NeoPDP" panel design improves picture contrast and black levels
Panasonic's new NeoPDP plasma technology significantly improves both picture contrast and black levels. The latest version of Panasonic's Real Black Drive System reduces the illumination level when plasma pixels shut off, yielding very deep black levels (to see an illustration, click on "more photos"). Note that the TC-P50G10's impressive 40,000:1 contrast ratio spec is "native" contrast, which is a more accurate measure of real-world performance than the much higher "dynamic" contrast spec.

Have fun viewing photos, videos and websites — without touching your PC
Panasonic also included direct Internet access, so you can connect the TC-P50G10 to your broadband Internet connection and use Panasonic's easy VIERA Cast™ interface to stream videos at YouTube™ and Amazon™ Video On Demand.

And "G10" plasmas include advanced memory card playback. You can view high-res AVCHD™ video recorded with a Panasonic's high-definition SD™ card camcorder, or display digital photos you save to SD with a digital camera. Simply insert the card into the TV's side-panel slot and sit back while the whole family enjoys beautifully lifelike home movies or the latest vacation pics in the comfort of your living room.

    Features

Built-in Tuners: The TV has both analog (NTSC) and digital (ATSC) tuners, as well as a QAM tuner for unencrypted cable signals. With these built-in tuners, you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode HDTV/SDTV signals.

100,000 Hour Panel Life: The TC-P50G10 features a G12 Progressive 1080p HD Neo PDP (Plasma Display Panel) with a 100,000 hour panel life.

Neo PDP Technology: The TC-P50G10 features a new Neo PDP (Plasma Display Panel) technology which delivers sharp, detailed images, deep blacks and remarkable brightness, and all with lower power consumption.

THX Certified Display: The TC-P50G10 is THX Certified for faithful movie image reproduction. The Panasonic G10 Series Plasma HDTVs meet the high standards set by the Lucasfilm THX Certified Display Program, to faithfully recreate the visual ambience intended by the original movies creators.

Native Resolution: The TC-P50G10 has a display resolution of 1920 x 1080. All incoming signals are converted to this native resolution. The HDMI digital and component video inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i, and will display them as 1920 x 1080.

Anti-Reflective Filter: The TV's flat panel features a new AR (anti-reflective) screen coating that acts as a filter to reduce annoying reflections and improve picture quality.

2,000,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio: The Panasonic TC-P50G10 Widescreen VIERA plasma HDTV utilizes an infinite black panel that has a native contrast ratio of 40,000:1 and dynamic contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1.

600Hz Sub-field Drive: The 600Hz Sub-field Drive produces crisp, focused images for sports, dramatic action, and all other fast-moving scenes. Your full-HD movies and games will look clear and sharp.

6,144 Shades of Gradation: Plasma displays can suffer from an artifact called false contouring, where transitions between different shades of the same color are too sharp. These transitions can appear as distinct lines between the different shades of color. Having 6,144 shades of gradation helps minimize the false contouring artifact so color transitions take on a smooth, natural appearance.

Deep Color/x.v.Color Compatible: This unit is compatible with the Deep Color and x.v.Color technology that corresponds with the HDMI Version 1.3 specification. This technology supports higher bit rates and more color possibilities than previous HDTV signals.

24p Playback: This TV is capable of displaying film-based video at the frame rate of 24 fps via HDMI. Some Blu-ray and high definition discs offer special 24p frame rate video for most accurate display of film-based material.

Aspect Modes: Depending on the input signal, you can choose one of the following aspect modes:

    • Full:
      • stretches a 4:3 picture horizontally to fill the screen (recommended for anamorphic sources)
      • 16:9 source displayed in original aspect
    • Just: stretches a 4:3 picture to fill the screen but with aspect correction applied to the sides of the screen so that elongation is only apparent at the left and right edges of the screen (recommended for normal TV broadcasts)
    • H-Fill: 1080i, 1080p, or 720p inputs only; enlarges a 4:3 picture horizontally to fill the screen, the side edges are cut off
    • 4:3: displays a 4:3 picture in original aspect ratio with bars along the sides
    • Zoom: magnifies the picture uniformly (vertically and horizontally) to fill the screen; the top and bottom of a 4:3 source are cut off (recommended for letter box sources)

Picture Menu: The Menu list allows you to make the following adjustments in picture quality:

    • Picture Modes: You can choose one of the following picture modes:
      • Vivid: provides enhanced contrast and sharpness when viewing in a well lit room
      • Standard: recommended for normal viewing conditions with subdued room lighting
      • THX: faithfully reproduces the image quality that the movie makers intended in order to provide the ultimate cinematic experience at home
      • Game: for playing video games; this mode will be set automatically if "GAME" is selected from the input label setting
      • Custom: adjust picture, brightness, color, tint, and sharpness
    • Color Temperature: This feature selects the level of warm colors (red) and cool colors (blue); choose from a Cool 2, Cool 1, Normal, Warm 1, or Warm 2.
    • C.A.T.S: Adjusts the brightness and gradation according to the ambient lighting condition. You can select On or Off.
    • Video NR: Video Noise Reduction removes snow from a weaker analog TV signal.
    • Zoom Adjust: adjusts the vertical alignment and size when aspect setting "Zoom" is selected.
    • Advanced Picture: Some advanced picture settings include:
      • Digital Comb Filter: The motion adaptive 3D-YC comb filter minimizes noise and cross-color in the picture when the composite video input is used.
      • Color Matrix: When viewing a signal input through the component video inputs, this TV will automatically optimize the color parameters based on the color matrix setting:
      • MPEG NR: Reduces the block noise specific to digital signals from DVDs, STB's etc.
      • Black Level: You can adjust the TV's black level to Dark or Light.
      • 24p Direct In: 24p Direct In achieves more cinematic playback by reproducing the movie contents at twice the speed of 24 framers per seconds (60Hz or 48Hz).
      • HD Size: Selects between 95% and 100% for the scanning area with high definition signal. Select 95% if noise is generated on the edges of the screen.
      • H Size: Adjust horizontal display range to reduce noise of both side edges of an image or adjust image size according to aspect mode for reducing noise.

Anti-Image Retention Features: The TV's Pixel Orbiter feature helps to prevent image retention (burn-in) by shifting the display image. You can set the feature to automatic or force, and designate the time interval for the "Force" setting as 1, 2, 3, or 4. You can also change the brightness of the side bars that appear in 4:3 mode, or start a scrolling white vertical bar across the screen to prevent burn-in.

Photo/Video Viewer: The SD card slot on the side-panel of the TC-P50G10 allows you to view JPEG photos and high definition AVCHD or standard definition MPEG2 video from an SD, SDHC or miniSD card (an adapter is required to use a miniSD card). The maximum capacity for each type of media is: SDHC (16GB), SD Card (2GB), miniSD card (1GB). You can view images as thumbnails (up to 12 images), view them individually allowing you to rotate the image 90-degrees clockwise or counter-clockwise or view them as a slide show, with adjustable picture duration. You can adjust the time duration for the slide show (Very fast, Fast, Medium, Slow, Very slow) as well as the transition effect (Off, Fade, Wipe, Slide, Zoom, Comb, Dissolve, Checker, or Random). You can also choose to playback your photos with a Sepia or Gray Scale effect. In addition, you can adjust the TV's picture settings (Contrast, Brightness, Color, Tint, Sharpness) for your still photos and videos. You can adjust the audio settings for your videos, as well. You are able to select the video you want to play from an on-screen movie list. You can move to the previous or next movie move, as well as repeat video playback.

VIERA Cast: Using the television's rear-panel RJ-45 Ethernet port you can access select internet services (TV content) from the television via VIERA Cast, a web menu that's built into the television. With Panasonic's VIERA Cast technology, you can enjoy online content like Amazon Video On Demand, YouTube videos, Picasa Web Albums, stock information (Bloomberg) and weather through the TV's easy-to-use, built-in Web interface via the supplied remote control (no extra equipment or PC required). WOW!!!

Written By Tim, Lexington, SC on Friday, July 10, 2009

This TV is simply amazing. Beautiful picture and a great price. Online reviews of this set have been consistently high, so you can't go wrong. Setup was incredibly simple. I don't quite understand why Panny is coming out with the G15. The only difference in specs is the G15 is a tad bit thinner, but it also costs hundreds more. Why would you pay that much extra cash to get a cabinet that's maybe 1/4 inch thinner? The G10 is the much better choice unless you want to make a big performance (and price) jump to the V10 or Z1 series. I haven't hooked the TV up to the internet yet so I can't speak to the Viera Cast features, but I worry that even with high-speed internet the bandwidth is not sufficient to have a very good picture on this beautiful screen. I'd rather watch a Blu-ray. My only complaint is the remote. Some of the buttons are closely spaced and you end up hitting two buttons at the same time.

    really great product

Written By Garrett, Colorado on Monday, June 22, 2009

spent the extra $$ for vieracast Internet features. It's really worth it -- especially if you use Piscasa for web-post of pics and/or youtube for post of vids.

    Picture quality is good.

Was surprised that my Pro 650 backup complained of overload when powering ONLY this TV. I understood that plasma draws large amounts of power -- but was surprised about UPS overload. I hooked to alternate 950VA UPS and all is well.

Unit does pump out some heat. "A" for picture quality.

I would grade the remote at a solid "B" -- but could be improved. The primary frustration is backlight only works on volume and channel buttons -- two of approx 25+ buttons on remote.

    Great TV

Written By jeffthebaptist, Rutherfordton, NC on Saturday, June 13, 2009

The picture is awesome, and I don't even have HDTV yet. Very attractive looking tv. The speakers aren't that great, but I bought it for the picture. Glad I made this purchase, and Crutchfield is an awesome company!!!

    Great looking set...AWESOME picture

Written By JAMES, Smithfield, KY on Friday, June 12, 2009

Set looks great on the console, and is very stable on the pedestal even though it appears small and unobtrusive. The picture is absolutely awesome. I have been use to some pixelation and delay on my 40" LCD upstairs, and now I am sold on plasma's. I guess if you watch alot of day time tv, or movies with all your lights on; you might still require an LCD, but otherwise I will always now prefer the crisp lines and deep darks of the plasma. The THX mode, when watching movies, is great...takes all the guess work out of color adjustment, and the picture will blow you away. I use a Klipsch component surround system when watching movies, but usually only turn on the tv when watching shows, and am very pleased with the sound of the tv by itself.

    Spectacular Picture

Written By Timothy, Fort Worth, Tx on Sunday, May 24, 2009

The first TV I received had a shattered screen. The second one was flawless and the picture is spectacular with Blu-ray (1080p) and upconverted standard (480) DVD resolutions. The picture is smooth and film-like and I discovered nuances in color and detail that I never saw with my standard definition 32" Sony CRT. I also purchased a Sony Blu-ray player (BDP-S550). Standard definition is noticeably fuzzier, but watchable and not as bad as I thought it would be. It has a lot of video settings for each input, such as color temperatures and video presets (such as THX) that you can tweak to your liking. I did a lot of research before I chose my first HD television and it paid off, because this one is fantastic.

    Great TV!!

Written By Brandon, Denver, CO on Tuesday, April 07, 2009

This is a fantastic TV and Crutchfield was flawless in service and delivery. The setup was very quick since all I had to do was put in into THX mode for movies. I use an antenna for HD networks and have a blu ray player hooked up for movies. The picture is better than I anticipated. I do not use the speakers for movies, but they sound good for normal tv. I still have a couple of questions regarding some of the vieralink features, but haven't had a chance to try and figure them out either. The Crutchfield reps were very easy to deal with (as always) and the delivery guy was prompt and helpful. The delivery guy helped me hang the TV on the wall (bracket was already in place) and took all the trash with him. Overall a great experience! Thanks!
