Garmin Edge Explore 1000

Edge Explore 1000 can notify your emergency contact in the event of an accident.

Edge Explore 1000 taps into the power of your iOS® or Android™ smartphone with a suite of features accessed through the free Garmin Connect™ Mobile app. You'll enjoy features like live tracking, social media sharing, and weather reports, both during and after your ride. Plus, Edge Explore transfers ride data to your smartphone via Bluetooth®, so you can share the details with your circle of friends immediately.

Safety first

If you're out on a long ride or race, your friends and family can follow your progress with real-time map updates on the Garmin Connect web site or mobile app. Edge Explore's incident detection works with your smartphone to send location information to your contacts if you've been involved in an accident. Edge Explore 1000 is also compatible with Garmin's advanced Varia rearview radar and bike lights, for an extra measure of safety when you're riding.

You can quickly check iffy weather conditions while leaving your smartphone safe and dry in your pocket or jacket. And you can operate the the computer's touchscreen with gloved fingers and in wet conditions, too.

Advanced metrics

The Edge Explore 1000 is compatible with ANT+-enabled power meters (not included), including Garmin's inovative Vector™ power meter system, so you can track your power output in watts when you ride — one of the most effective training methods available. And when it's paired with a heart rate monitor (not included), the Edge Explore 1000 tracks your heart rate, so you can train in the proper heart-rate zone to optimize your workout. Plus, you can customize the touchscreen to display the info that you want to see while you're riding.

Even without optional tools, the computer's high-sensitivity GPS receiver records speed, distance, time, plus ascent and descent. A built-in barometric altimeter yields precise elevation measurements. You can compare successive rides over the same route with the Courses feature, and you can compete against past performances. Product Research

Features

Overview: The Garmin Edge Explore 1000 is an advanced, GPS-enabled bicycle computer with connected features, such as live tracking and social media sharing via Garmin Connect, weather, and the ability to send and receive courses. It contains a pre-loaded Garmin Cycle Map, and has the option to add detailed maps via microSD card. The Edge Explore 1000 is waterproof (IPX7 rated), and comes with two standard handlebar mounts and the Extended Out Front Bike mount so you can mount it on multiple bikes. Also included is the Garmin Edge Remote, along with two mounts, so you can control the Edge Explore 1000 without taking your hands off of the handlebars.

Touchscreen Display: The Edge Explore 1000 has a 3" diagonal backlit color touchscreen LCD (1.5"W x 2.6"H), with a display resolution of 240 x 400 pixels. The unit can also be turned 90° for viewing in landscape mode. You can maneuver through the menus and make selections directly on the touchscreen display. The display can show navigation maps along with your speed and distance, or show your elapsed time, speed, distance, elevation, and total ascent. With available accessories, your pedaling cadence, calories burned, and heart rate can also appear on the display.

GPS Navigation: The Edge Explore 1000 has a built-in high-sensitivity GPS receiver. The time of day and the date are automatically set by the GPS receiver. The device has preloaded Garmin Cycle Maps, showing on-road and off-road routes and points-of-interest. The device is also compatible with optional detailed street maps and topographical maps available on microSD card. The maps, in combination with the GPS, can guide you while you're touring, commuting, competing, or working out.

Smartphone Compatible: You can wirelessly link your device to a smartphone (Android or iOS) using the Garmin Connect Mobile app. At the end of your ride, you can transfer the ride data directly to your phone via Bluetooth. Using the app, you can analyze the details of your ride, or share it with others. You can also search out courses and workouts stored at Garmin Connect, download them to your smartphone, and send them to your Edge Explore 1000 wirelessly. Real-time weather updates and alerts can be sent from your smartphone to your device.

Live Tracking: Another connected feature of the Edge Explore 1000, Live Tracking, allows your friends and family to follow your races and training activities in real time. You can invite your followers via email or social media to view your live data on the Garmin Connect tracking page. Once they see your invitation, they can click to follow your progress on a map and see your stats.

Controls: Most of the controls are located on the touchscreen. On the Home screen, you can access your bike profile, change your activity profile, manage your history, courses, and workouts, and start a new ride. During your ride, you can use the front panel buttons to start/stop the timer and mark a new lap without having to look at the screen. The power button is located on the side.

Waterproof: The Edge Explore 1000 is waterproof to IEC Standard 60529 IPX7. It can withstand immersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. The casing is totally sealed, including the front-mounted controls, and the microSD card slot and USB port have a water-resistant cover to prevent corrosion.

ANT+: ANT+ is a wireless technology that allows certain accessories to communicate with the Edge Explore 1000. ANT+ sensors generally work within 10 feet of the unit. In addition, an increasing number of health clubs and fitness centers have ANT+ compatible equipment in their facilities, so you can use the same accessories separate from your device. Compatible Garmin ANT+ accessories include:

  • Heart Rate Monitor: When the Edge Explore 1000 is paired with the optional Premium Heart Rate Monitor, the unit tracks your heart beats per minute and calculates your calorie consumption as you train. You can train in a certain heart rate zone to improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to past performances.
  • Speed/Cadence Sensor: The Garmin Speed/Cadence Sensor measures your speed and pedaling strokes per minute. The Edge Explore 1000 has a Non-Zero Averaging option to let you include or exclude the zero values (when you're not pedaling) when calculating your power ratings.

Auto Pause: The built-in timer will pause automatically when it detects you're not moving. The timer will restart when you resume your ride.

Auto Lap: The Auto Lap feature lets you automatically mark the lap at a specific position. This helps you compare your performance over different parts of a ride (i.e. a long climb or training sprints). You can also use Auto Lap to mark laps at a specific distance.

Data Storage: The Edge Explore 1000's built-in memory (approximately 50 MB) stores at least 180 hours of ride data. The unit not only has an odometer to keep track of your mileage, but includes data on your last ride, longest ride, fastest ride, and all rides. Ride data can be sent to your smartphone via Bluetooth using the Garmin Connect app.

User Profile: The Edge Explore 1000 allows you to enter data about yourself to create a User Profile. This data (gender, birth year, weight, and height) is used to calculate accurate ride data.

Activity Profiles: In addition to User Profiles, the Edge Explore 1000 allows you to customize ten activity profiles. You can create separate activity profiles for training, racing, and mountain biking. Each activity profile contains such data as activity totals, alerts, training zones (heart rate and speed), training settings (AutoPause and AutoLap), and navigation settings.

Garmin Connect: Free web-based Garmin Connect software lets you store your workout data for comprehensive analysis. Garmin Connect is used by cyclists worldwide, and presents your data in an easily understood manner, with maps, reports, and suggested activities. As you complete activities, they are tracked on both the device and on Garmin Connect. In addition, the Garmin Training Center software lets you track and analyze your fitness activities and create workouts to send to your device, without requiring Internet access after the initial download.

Incident Detection: The Edge Explore 1000 offers Incident Detection in the event you take a spill. A built-in accelerometer can detect when you have an accident, and the Garmin Connect app can send an automated text message and an email with your name and GPS location to your emergency contacts. The message will appear on your device and paired smartphone that your contacts will be alerted in 30 seconds if you do not cancel the message. You must first set up emergency contact information in the Garmin Connect mobile app. Your contacts must be able to accept texts messages.

USB Port: A Micro-USB port is provided on the back of the unit for charging and connecting to your computer, using the included Micro USB cable. A water-resistant plug keeps moisture out.

Power Requirements: The unit is powered by a built-in Lithium-Ion battery. It charges via the included USB cable when connected to your computer or an optional AC adapter. The battery charge level is expressed as a percentage on the display. Under typical usage, the battery life is approximately 15 hours. Extremely cold temperatures will also reduce battery life.

Mounting: The Edge Explore 1000 can be mounted to your bicycle's handlebars or stem. Two sizes of O-rings are included for best fit. Two complete standard mounts and the Extended Out-Front Bike Mount are included to allow you to use the unit on multiple bikes.

Edge Remote: Included with the Edge Explore 1000 is the Edge Remote control. The 3-button remote mounts to your bike's handlebar, allowing you to operate it with a thumb or finger. It uses ANT+ wireless connectivity to transmit remote codes to the device. The Lap key lets you indicate to the Edge device that you have completed a lap and beginning a new one. The Page key lets you scroll forward or backwards through the data pages. The Action Key functions are programmable. Its default function is to start and stop the timer, or to turn on the backlight of the Edge display. The Status LED in the center flashes green or red to indicate the attempt and success or failure to send a command or pair with the device.
