Our take on the Sony ES STR-DA6400ES

Meet the flagship home theater receiver in Sony's premium ES line. The STR-DA6400ES fills your room with dynamic, involving surround sound and ensures superb picture quality from all of your video sources.

This receiver's precision-built amplifier delivers 120 watts times seven channels of power. Its advanced digital processors decode the latest surround sound formats, including Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD™ Master Audio — two high-resolution formats found on many newer Blu-ray players and discs. And that's just the beginning. The '6400ES also comes packed with flexible options for PC networking and multiroom entertainment.

Versatile video connections and maximum picture quality
Six 1080p-compatible HDMI inputs let you hook up your high-definition video sources and switch between them easily. The receiver's front-panel HDMI input makes it a snap to plug in your high-def camcorder or video game console. And if your home theater room has an HDTV and a high-def projector, two HDMI outputs provide easy connections for both. The '6400ES boasts dual Faroudja DCDi Cinema® processors that can upconvert two non-HD video sources simultaneously. This means you and your family can enjoy crisper, more detailed pictures with all your video sources — even when you're watching different movies or shows in two rooms at the same time. You can also send HD video to a home video distribution system via the receiver's CAT-5e connection.

Easy and accurate setup
Sony's auto calibration makes home theater setup quick, simple, and accurate. Just plug in the included microphone, place it in your favorite seat, and the 'DA6400ES automatically adjusts the volume and delay settings for each speaker in your home theater. The result is precise, well-balanced home theater sound, custom-tailored for your specific room and speakers.

Cool entertainment options
Connect the '6400ES to a wired PC network and you can access music, photos, and video stored on your computer. You can also listen to Internet Radio stations over your broadband connection. Dual Digital Media Ports let you play music stored on your iPod® when you connect an optional Sony iPod dock. This receiver is also XM Ready and compatible with XM's HD surround music channels. Or connect an optional SiriusConnect™ home tuner kit to enjoy SIRIUS satellite programming. Plus, you can use Sony's special digital processing mode to enhance the sound of your MP3s and other compressed music files.

Multi-room music, video, and more
Three-room/three-source capability lets you enjoy surround sound in your home theater room while a family member or housemate watches a different video source in a second room, and another listens to stereo music in a third room. An on-screen menu system offers simple, straightforward operation. Its polished graphic interface features easy-to-use menus that don't block the entire TV picture — allowing you to control receiver functions on-screen while still viewing your programs. The learning/multibrand remote provides easy control of all your components.

Features

Overview: The Sony STR-DA6400ES Elevated Standard (ES) 7.1ch A/V Receiver offers a 120-watt power amplifier (8 ohms, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, 0.09 percent THD) and features sophisticated A/V technology that reproduces the latest audio formats from Dolby Labs (Dolby Digital +/Dolby TrueHD) and dts (dts HD/DTS High Resolution Audio). The STR-DA6400ES features dual Faroudja DCDi Cinema chips that enable upscaling of standard definition content to 1080p via HDMI in your main room and 1080i via component video in your Zone 2 room. There are five HDMI rear inputs, one HDMI front input and two HDMI outputs to connect your HD components. Using the receiver's Ethernet connection, the STR-DA6400ES can share music, photos and videos with your PC even if the receiver is in another room. The addition of the Ethernet connection also allows simple set up and enables network upgrades. The unit's Xross Media Bar-inspired GUI has been enhanced to provide simplified access to content on a networked PC and can also be used in a second room. In addition, you can listen to your music on your iPod and Walkman player as well as SHOUTcast Internet Radio and Rhapsody Music Service in up to three rooms via the receiver's dual Digital Media Port (DMP) inputs. Another unique feature, found on the STR-DA6400ES, is the Quick Click on-screen remote control which simplifies operation of your compatible sources.

Dual Video Conversion With Scaling: The Sony ES STR-DA6400ES receiver utilizes a dual video conversion function that allows you to minimize the number of connections needed from the receiver to up to two televisions. Video scaling (up to 1080p) is performed by dual Faroudja chipsets to correct image jaggedness, reduce block noise, and reproduce true to original colors through the receiver's two HDMI outputs. All Composite and component video input signals can be converted to either the receiver's HDMI A or B connection and scaled to a resolution up to 1080p. Composite video signals can also be converted to component video and scaled to a resolution up to 1080i (including Zone 2). In addition, component video signals can be down converted to 480i and output as composite video. Video input via HDMI must output via HDMI.

Note: No audio is output from the two HDMI outputs when an analog video signal is converted. The receiver's dual HDMI outputs cannot be used simultaneously. Only one HDMI output can be used at a time.

HDMI Switching: The receiver has six HDMI ver.1.3 inputs (5 front/1 rear) and two HDMI ver 1.3 outputs which support high definition video, including 1080p, 1080/24p, deep color, and xvYCC. Menu options include:

  • Resolution: Direct, Auto, 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p
  • Sub Level: auto, +10 dB, +0 dB; to set correct bass output
  • Audio: amp or amp+TV; sound output through amp only, or amp and TV speakers
  • Control: control compatible Sony components connected via HDMI
  • HDMI Output: switches between either the receiver's HDMI A or HDMI B output (cannot output video simultaneously from both HDMI outputs)
  • Video Direct: lets you output the video input signal from the HDMI input jacks directly to the HDMI output jacks of the receiver without going through the unit's video processor

xvYCC: The STR-DA6400ES supports xvYCC color, offering a wider color range than the current broadcast standard. For the xvYCC feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Deep Color: The STR-DA6400ES also supports Deep Color which allows the color depth of video signals passing through HDMI to be raised. The number of colors that could be expressed by 1 pixel was 24 bits (16,777,216 colors) with a standard HDMI jack. However, the number of colors which can be expressed by 1 pixel is 36 bits with a Deep Color enabled HDMI jack. Since the gradation of the depth of a color can be expressed more finely with more bits, continuous color changes can be more smoothly expressed. For the Deep Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Bravia Theater Sync: Sony's Bravia Theater Sync feature allows you to easily manage select BRAVIA televisions and Sony HDMI audio and video components with a single remote. By connecting Sony components that are compatible with the HDMI Control function with a HDMI cable, operation is simplified in the following ways.

  • One-Touch-Play: When you playback a component such as a DVD/Blu-ray Disc Player, the receiver and the TV are turned on automatically and switch to the appropriate HDMI input.
  • System Audio Control: While watching TV, you can select to output the sound from the TV speaker or the speakers connected to the receiver.
  • System Power Off: When you turn off the TV, the receiver and connected components are also turned off simultaneously.

H.A.T.S. (High Quality Digital Audio Transmission System): H.A.T.S. for HDMI is a flow control playback system for HDMI transmission. A master clock, important for audio quality, is provided by a crystal transmitter beside the receiver's DA covert and controls the playback speed of the components connected to the receiver using HDMI CEC (Consumer Electronics Controls) for HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) to match the playback rate. This gives you high quality sound with exceptional clarity, because there is nearly no transmission of jitter when transmitting the clock.

Digital Legato Linear (D.L.L.): This is Sony proprietary technology that allows low quality digital audio signals to be played back with high quality sound. Old recording or compressed audio often have noise on the waveform and out-of-frequency distortion, as well as harmonic distortion, as well as harmonic distortion when the audio frequency is generated. The D.L.L. feature eliminates these problems, and give you rich sound for music and movies.

Auto Calibration: The STR-DA6400ES is equipped with Digital Cinema Auto Calibration technology which uses the included microphone to automatically check the speaker connections and polarity of the speakers. It then optimally sets the distance for each speaker (from the listening position), the angle of each speaker, each speaker's size (large/small), each speaker's output level, and the frequency characteristics for each speaker (to correctly set a crossover point). The microphone has an 18' cord attached and has a threaded insert on the bottom so it can be mounted to a tripod.

Speaker Manual Settings: If you choose not to auto calibrate the speaker levels, you can manually adjust each speaker as follows:

  • Speaker Pattern: 2/0 to 3/4.1 (16 patterns)
  • Speaker Impedance: 4-ohm or 8-ohm
  • Level Settings:
    • Front: left and right individually adjustable from -10.0dB to +10.0dB in 0.5dB steps
    • Center: -20.0dB to +10dB in 0.5dB increments
    • Surround: left and right individually adjustable from -20.0dB to +10dB in 0.5dB increments
    • Surround Back: -20.0dB to +10dB in 0.5dB increments left and right individually adjustable when 2 surround back speakers are connected, single adjustment if only one surround back speaker is used
    • Subwoofer Level: -20.0dB to +10dB in 0.5dB increments
  • Distance Settings: each of the eight channels can be individually set between 3'3" and 32'9" in 1 inch increments
  • Speaker Size: set the size of each set of speakers (front, center, surround) to small or large; center and surround can also be set to no (if the front speakers are set to small, none of the other speakers can be set to large)
  • Crossover: the crossover point can be adjusted for any speakers set to small; 40 Hz to 200 Hz in 10 Hz increments
  • Center Mix: allows the center-channel information to be fed into your system's front right and left speakers when you do not have a center-channel connected

Surround Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of surround modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software. This receiver can receive Multi-Linear PCM (up to 8 channels) with a sampling frequency of 192 kHz or less with an HDMI connection. The surround modes include:

Remote Control

Dual Remotes: The STR-DA6400ES comes with two separate remotes, the RM-AAL012 (Main Room) and RM-AAP026 (Zone 2/3 Remote). Since both remotes are IR, an IR repeater system is needed in order for you to control the receiver from the 2nd zone.

RM-AAL012: The Main Room RM-AAL012 wireless remote control operates the receiver and is pre-coded and programmable to control other components. Pre-set codes are built-in for multiple brands of CD players, DAT decks, MD recorders, cassette decks, LD players, VCRs, DVD players, TVs, DSS receivers, and cable boxes; plus Sony tuners, DVD recorders, hard disc recorders, and Blu-ray players. Two programmable Macro buttons allow you to perform up to 20 sequential commands by pressing only one button.

Quick Click On-Screen Remote: Another unique feature, found on the STR-DA6400ES remote control, is the Quick Click on-screen button which simplifies operation of your compatible sources by allowing you to operate connected devices using an on-screen remote. You can control components connected to the receiver, a projector, and a lighting control unit using the unit's on-screen remote displayed on your TV screen. It is necessary to plug the supplied IR blaster into the IR remote output of the receiver and attach the emitter end of the blaster to the component you would like to control using the Quick Click feature.

RM-AAP026: The Zone 2/3 RM-AAP026 wireless remote control is designed to operate your second and third zone operating system using an optional IR repeater system kit (sold separately).

Input and Output Notes

HDMI: There are six HDMI ver.1.3 inputs with dedicated input selection for both video and audio through the single cable (5 rear/1 front). Each can also be assigned to any of seven non-HDMI inputs (Video1, Video2, Video3, DVD/BD, Sat/CATV, MD/Tape, SA-CD/CD). Dual HDMI ver.1.3 outputs feed your TV monitors and any video signal routed to the STR-DA6400ES can be converted to HDMI. A video signal input via HDMI must be output via HDMI. The receiver's dual HDMI outputs cannot be output simultaneously. Only one HDMI output can be displayed at one time.

Component Video: The receiver has three component video inputs which can be assigned to specific sources (Video1, DVD/BD, SAT, etc). The component video bandwidth is 80 MHz, making them high-definition video compatible. A single component video output feeds the TV monitor and any video signal routed to the STR-DA6400ES via composite video can be converted to component video. The receiver also features a component video output for Zone 2.

External Video Input with Picture and Picture: The receiver's additional composite video input lets you enjoy the convenience of picture-in-picture capabilities. You can use this video input to connect a baby monitor or security camera and monitor room activity or view a 2nd video source while still watching the main video source.

Digital Audio: Six optical digital (5 rear/one front) and three coaxial digital inputs are assignable to various inputs (Video1, DVD/BD, SA-CD/CD, etc). There is one optical digital output to feed a digital recording component (CDR, MiniDisc, etc).

Speaker Outputs: All the speaker outputs are binding post connectors, including front A left and right, front B left and right, center, surround left and right, and surround back left and right. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs, but they will accept bare wire, single banana, and dual banana plugs. The front A and B speaker pairs are wired in parallel.

Multi Channel Input: Eight analog RCA inputs are used for outboard 5.1 or 7.1 channel processors.

Preamp Outputs: Eight analog RCA preamp outputs are used for connecting the receiver to external power amplifiers.

Dual RJ-45 Ports: The receiver features two RJ-45 ports. One is used for a network connection while the other is used for Zone 2 video distribution.

  • LAN Port (Network): An RJ-45 jack which connects to a router when you want to connect the receiver to your home PC network.
  • Zone 2 Video Out: An RJ-45 jack is used to send a video signal to a component in Zone 2. A CAT-5 cable must be used for connection. This connection supports up to a 1080i video signal.

Note: The receiver's Zone 2 Video Out RJ-45 connection is not an Ethernet LAN connection. It is only to be used for Zone 2 applications.

RS232C: The receiver can be configured in the menu to receive commands from 3rd party control systems (Crestron, AMX, etc.) via the RS232C port.

Control Jacks: Two sets of 3.5mm mini-jack connectors are supplied for the following control methods:

  • Trigger Out: three +12V trigger outputs to turn external equipment on/off along with the receiver or with activation of zone 2 or Zone 3
  • IR Remote: two IR out and one IR in jacks will support an IR repeater system

Front Panel Inputs: The STR-DA6400ES features a set of front panel inputs with and HDMI input, left and right RCA audio input, RCA composite video input, and optical digital input.

Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.

Awsome Sound

Written By Bart, Alb, NM on Wednesday, January 14, 2009

1st off, the minute I lifted it out the box I knew this was a top notch receiver. The quality materials and workmanship is evident just in the weight of this thing.

Hookup was very straight forward as I have just two sources, a new BDPS5000ES Blu-Ray player and a Direct TV HD receiver both hooked via HDMI. The only gripe I have about this and nearly every receiver, is the speaker posts are too close together for really big speaker cables. I guess I need to belly up and buy some banana plugs.

I have not done the automated room equalization yet, but from a little tinkering with the volume controls for the surrounds and mains, this baby really sings! The quality of sound is amazing through all channels! I really look forward to some really intense effects on some of the action movies I have!

Still have lots to explore on this machine, but right now everything is a 5! Nice unit SONY!

Anoying for the money

Written By David, Huntingtown on Friday, December 26, 2008

Well, I coughed up the big bucks for this unit so that I could hook it up to my home network and tap into my Home Server PC for music and pictures. For some reason with music, it will only find .wav files; since almost all of my music is in .mp3 it is very frustrating. Likewise with the photos; all most all of my pictures are in .jpg, but all it finds is the .bmp files. So far, I have not found a video file format that it will recognize, but I have not tried converting video into other formats although I have video in .mpg .mp2 .wmv .avi that it just ignores. The auto calibrate does the distance fantastically, but it sets the volume a bit too low on the rear speakers. Shoutcast is handled very well and is a welcome addition to my music choices. The annoying things, every time you turn off the receiver, it takes the receiver an annoyingly long while to find the servers again and re-connect. If you have a device that is DVI out and use an adapter to connect to the HDMI, don't bother; the receiver will momentarily connect, then the receiver disconnects and ignores the device. When you set the network settings manually and save them along with all of the other settings in the receiver with the ES utility software, when you write them back to the receiver, it loses parts of the DNS server addresses and you will need to go back into the receiver and set them again manually.
