Overview: The Sony PRS-700 Reader Digital
Book holds about 350 eBooks using its built-in 450MB memory or hundreds more with optional removable memory
cards. Its portable size makes it great for traveling, allowing you to read a
variety of books wherever you are. With thousands of eBook titles
available from the Sony eBooks Store and other participating Websites, you can choose to download new
releases, classics and popular book titles as well as view other document
formats such as Adobe PDF10, RTF, TXT, BBeB and Microsoft Word. Its built-in
rechargeable battery lasts up to 7,500 continuous page turns, and the
amazing paper-like screen technology is easy on your eyes during the day or at
night.
6" Touch-screen Display: A sizeable 6-inch display with
touch-screen technology lets you interact with the Reader just like a real book.
A simple movement with the slide of your finger or tap of the included stylus
lets you easily turn pages or activate bookmarks. It also features a virtual keyboard that can be used for
quick annotation or search. Up to 48 characters can be input. In addition,
the Sony Reader features soft-touch front-panel keys.
Paper-Like Display:
The Sony Reader
features an impressive 6 inch black-and-white display, utilizing breakthrough
E-Ink technology that's almost paper-like. The Reader also boasts features such
as high contrast, high resolution and a near 180º viewing angle to make the
display easy to read even in the sunlight. In addition, the text can be
magnified for sight-impaired readers. The screen's orientation can also be
displayed either vertically or horizontally.
Built-In LED Reading Light: A built-in LED reading light gives you the
ability to read at night or other low-light situations without bothering others
around you.
Portable
Design: The Sony Reader uses a very compact and lightweight
design and comes with a soft, black vinyl case to protect it from dings and scratches making it safe
and easy to take with you almost anywhere. The unit comes attached to the case
but can also be removed from the carrying case. The PRS-700 measures
approximately 0.425-inches thin and weighs around 10 ounces.
Dual Memory: The Sony
PRS-700 features a 420MB of internal memory and two memory card slots for
optional removable memory cards so you can take various titles, user-selected
Web content, or other supported documents for reading on the go. The unit will
hold up to 350
electronic books in its internal memory and hundreds more with Memory Stick Duo
or Pro Duo media up to 16GB and SD or mini-SD cards up to 2GB, and SDHC cards up
to 16GB (sold separately). You can transfer content back and
forth between the internal memory and the optional external memory card. The
unit is compatible with the following memory cards.
Note: The Reader does not come supplied with any external
media card.
Media
Formats: The PRS-700 will support the following media formats using the
supplied software.
- Unsecured Text: BBeB Book, Adobe PDF, TXT, RTF, Microsoft Word
(conversion to the Reader
requires Word to be installed on your PC)

Date and Time: This function allows you to set the date and time
displayed on the Reader.
Device Lock: The Device Lock features gives you the ability to set a 4 digit password to operate the
Sony Reader. Once the password is inserted, the next time you turn on your
Reader it will ask for the 4-digit password to access the Reader's Menu
Screens.
Rechargeable Battery: The Reader features an internal rechargeable Lithium Ion battery that allows you
to turn up to 7,500 continuous pages on a single charge. The integrated battery
will last up to 4 hours with built-in light set to Bright or 8 hours with
built-in light set to Standard. The internal
battery can be recharged from the USB cable when
plugged into your PC. The internal battery will fully charge in 4 hours using
the USB cable. An optional AC wall charger (AC-S5220E) is also available that
will charge the Reader's internal battery in 2 hours. You can verify the
remaining battery power by checking the indicator in the bottom left of the
Reader's screen.
Power Management: The Reader has a Power Management feature to avoid
unnecessary battery consumption. After 60 minutes of inactivity, the Reader
enters sleep mode automatically while the battery power is consumed slightly.
After 5 days of inactivity, the Reader automatically shutdown and stops
consuming the battery power. If the battery power is at a low level, the Reader
will shutdown after 60 minutes of inactivity.
Resume Function: The previously displayed
screen appears when turning this unit back on unless the reset button is pressed
or the battery is completely depleted and needs to be recharged.
Reading Files
eBooks:
The Sony Reader will allow you to search,
browse and discover thousands of popular electronic book titles from the Sony eBook online store
and other participating Websites. You can then purchase and download these titles to your PC
and easily transfer to your Sony Reader via the supplied USB cable.
Text Media: The Reader Digital Book isn't just capable of reading
eBooks. Using the included eBook Library 2.0 PC Software, you can easily
transfer Adobe PDF documents, Microsoft Word documents, BBeB Book, EPUB files,
Text files, and RTF files to the Reader, allowing you the flexibility to access and view
multiple files at any time.
Screen
Orientation: The PRS-700 allows you to view the text or image in a
horizontal or vertical manner.
Zoom
In/Out: The Reader allows you to change the size of the image or text
from Small, Medium, Large or XXL.
Collections Screen: The
Collections screen displays books that you wish to store together that are in a
collected series.
Books By Title Screen: The Books By Title Screen is a list of all the Book titles that have been stored
on the units internal or external memory that you can choose from. The PRS-700
comes with 15 book title excerpts already stored. The Book By Title Screen is displayed in
alphabetical order.
Books By Author: The Books By Author Screen displays the books you have stored by the Author's
name in alphabetical order.
Table of Contents: The Table of Contents selection displays the selected
book's table of contents, as well as its copyright notice and Authors'
summary of the book.
Book Info: The Information screen displays the Title, Author's name,
Publishing company, Category, eStore ID, Type of e-book, Date downloaded,
Space the book takes up, Location (internal or external memory, and File
name of the current book selected.
Continue
Reading Screen: The Continue Reading function allows you to jump directly to
the last page viewed without displaying the Book list so you can go directly to
the book and page where you stopped reading last.
Jump Page: You can jump directly to a page by inputting the page
number with the on-screen numeric keyboard.
Previous View: The Reader stores previously displayed pages in its
internal memory for easy recall.
Bookmark:
The Sony Reader features Bookmarking which allows you to select certain pages
that you wish to come back to at a later date.
Highlights: You can highlight words on a Book page so you can access
that word or phrase at a later date more easily.
Notes: You can add a comment to a bookmark or a highlighted word using
the on-screen keyboard in the Comment editor.
Music Files
Music Playback: The PRS-700
will playback un-encrypted MP3 (32-320 kbps) and AAC (40-320 kbps) music
files stored on its internal or external memory so you can listen to music while
you read using optional headphones (sold separately)
Audio Screen: The Audio screen
displays the list of songs you have stored on the Reader's internal and external
memory. When more than 10 tracks are stored, the index bar appears on the right
side of the list. You can display the next page of the list by scrolling the
bar.
Now Playing Screen: The Now Playing screen
displays the following information of the current song that is playing - Track
name, Artist name, Album name, Elapsed playback time, Total time of current
track, current track and total number of tracks. The screen will also display a
full screen picture of the thumbnail image saved for song that is playing.
Playback Features: The Sony
Reader allows you to skip to the next or previous track as well as fast forward
or rewind within a track. The Reader also feature Repeat (1 Song or All Songs
)and Shuffle playback functions.
Headphone Output: The PRS-700
features a 3.5mm headphone jack to listen to the unit's music with a pair of
headphones. The unit does not feature a built-in speaker.
Audio Background: The PRS-700
allows you to playback an Audio file and view a Document file at the same time.
Picture Files
Still Image Files: The
following still image files can be viewed on the Sony Reader's internal or
external memory - BMP, JPEG, GIF
and PNG still image files.
Sort Images: Still images can be sorted by Title or Date.
Picture Playback: The Reader
allows you to move from the previous and next picture, as well as zoom in and
out on the subject in 20 steps. Once you have zoomed in
our out on a subject you can scroll through the image
left to right or up and down.
Slideshow: You can also view
your pictures back in a slideshow fashion. You can select which picture to start
from and the slideshow will begin from there and then go in order starting with
the picture that is after the one you chose to begin the slideshow with. The Slideshow
setting allows you to turn the Slideshow feature On or Off as well as change
the picture duration time between 1 second to 60 seconds in 1 second
increments.
Connections
Top Panel Connections: The following
connections are located on top panel of the reader.
- Memory Stick Slot: The unit's Memory Stick slot will accommodate Sony Memory Stick
Duo and Pro Duo
- SD Card Slot: The unit's SD card slot will accommodate SD,
SDHC, and mini-SD memory cards.
Bottom Panel Connections: The
following connections are found on the base of the PRS-700 reader.
- USB Connection: The reader
uses a mini-USB Type-B port for connection to your PC via the supplied USB
type-A to mini-USB type-B connector cable.
- DC In Jack: The unit's
power connection is located on the base of the unit and is used with the
optional AC adapter (AC-S5220E) to power the unit and charge its internal battery
- Headphone Jack: The
PRS-700 features a single 3.5mm headphone output for private listening of
your audio content.
Note: This unit does
not feature a built-in loud-speaker
