Our take on the Sony XDR-S10HDiP

Sony's compact XDR-S10DiP clock radio brings a host of entertainment options to your nightstand, den or office. Its built-in dock lets you enjoy music from your iPod. The system's tuner receives regular AM and FM signals, as well as the crystal-clear digital HD Radio versions that many stations now simulcast. And you'll have access to the free, additional digital-only HD Radio programming some stations offer.

The XDR-S10DiP also features iTunes® tagging. Some of the HD Radio signals stations broadcast let you select songs for purchase through iTunes. When you hear a song you like on one of these tagging-enabled HD Radio broadcasts, press the "tag" button on the XDR-S10DiP. This saves the song information (but not the song itself) to the system's memory. These saved information tags automatically transfer to your docked iPod, and the next time you sync the player to a PC, your tagged song list appears in iTunes. Then just select the ones you want to purchase and download through the iTunes store.

Overview: The Sony XDR-S10HDiP Table Radio is a high fidelity FM/AM/HD Radio with a dock on top for an iPod. The radio has an LCD display with dark characters, a lit background, and adjustable brightness and contrast. HD Radio delivers crystal-clear, all-digital fidelity HD FM/AM broadcasts including HD multicasting which brings near CD quality sound to FM, and current FM sound quality to AM. HD Radio signals are already broadcast by more than 1,000 stations nationwide in hundreds of markets to the majority of the U.S. population.

Note: There is no subscription fee required to receive HD Radio broadcasts.

iPod Dock: The XDR-S10HDiP features a built-in dock for your iPod on the top of the unit. You have basic transport function control using the buttons on the top of the radio, and complete control using the included remote. Your iPod remains fully functional so you can operate your iPod's advanced menu functions from the iPod itself. The unit charges your iPod when docked, even when the power is turned off (when listening to the tuner at volume 25 or higher, the iPod is not charged). Compatible iPods currently include iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod touch (1st/2nd gen), iPod nano (1st/2nd/3rd/4th gen), iPhone/iPhone 3G, iPod video (5th gen), iPod photo (4th gen), and iPod mini (1st/2nd gen).

Note: This unit will not charge the iPhone 3G, iPod touch (2nd generation), or iPod nano (4th generation).

Alarm: The alarm will sound with your choice of an AM radio preset, an FM radio preset, the line input, the docked iPod, or a buzzer. When not using the buzzer, you can also select the alarm volume.

Sleep Timer: You can set the sleep timer to turn the radio off after 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes.

Full-Range Speakers: The XDR-S10HDiP radio uses two 2-5/8" full range speakers. The radio is also magnetically shielded, so it can be placed next to a CRT television.

iTunes Tagging: The iTunes Tag function allows you to mark songs you like when they are broadcast by HD Radio stations. Information about these tagged songs is stored by the receiver and transferred to your iPod. When you connect your iPod to your computer, iTunes automatically presents the songs in a new tagged playlist so you can preview, buy, and download them. The XDR-S10HDiP can save the data of up to 50 songs.

Note: iTunes Tagging requires iTunes 7.4 or later and is currently compatible with 5th generation iPods, 3rd generation iPod nanos, and iPod classics.

Clock radio dead on arrival

Written By James, Seattle , WA on Friday, November 27, 2009

When this unit arrived, it did not function at all. However, Crutchfield sent a replacement unit the very same day. See separate review for the second unit which worked fine. Crutchfield paid shipping for the new unit and the return of the inoperative unit.

Sony XDR-S10HDiP

Written By Donna, Baltimore MD on Thursday, April 09, 2009

LOVE IT! Purchased this radio for my office and wanted one that was also an
iphone dock. Music and talk radio sound great and I keep finding more stations
on the HD 2 channels that have great programs and most have no
commercials. Its really easy to use, has a great little remote control too. The
iTunes tagging feature really rocks! The radio is on in the office, I hear an
awesome song but have no clue what its called or who the artist is.
Information is on the display on the front and even better....there's a
button on the radio that "tags" the song and later when I plug my i-phone into
my computer, it brings up the song info in iTunes and asks if I want to save it
or purchase the song for my library. Great sounding radio and really cool
features...get one!

Sony XDR-S10HDiP

Written By Ricardo, Arlington, VA on Friday, April 03, 2009

I just received the radio today. The wake up buzzer was not too annoying for my ears, nor the light too bright. I figured out some things myself, but it would have been nice to have received directions with the radio. There was nothing in the box. Sony has to do better!

Brilliant FM, Great HD, ok AM and iPhone

Written By Amlan, Santa Clara, CA on Monday, March 30, 2009

I was looking to replace my bedside radio with a slightly better one that will charge my iPhone 3G and play it as well. This one fit in nicely. Setup was simple. But the FM Antenna included required some innovative hiding to put up on bedroom wall. I believe Sony should have done an internal one. Anyway, the reception for FM was mind blowing. One of the best I have ever seen, and believe me I have the $800 HD tuner in my living room. It simply blows it out of the water. HD reception was fantastic in the FM range but not so great in AM. The surround option is a nice touch and so is the tagging. Very cool. The AM reception was ordinary, AM-HD as I said, a little better than ordinary but nothing to write home about. The speaker quality I think is a bit too ordinary in this unit. I am a bit of an audio junky so may be it is ok for most listeners. But I like deep bass and wide open midrange and touching highs. Which I think is just not there. The surround option does help a little. iPhone charging is first class. Finally I dont have to put my phone in airplane mode any more, thanks to it's great GSM shielding. The light is super bright and even with 3 levels of brightness of the display still too bright for my taste. The multiple display options help (just press display button multiple times) to arrange clock next to ever streaming HD feed.

Overall I'd say a winner from Sony.

Great unit.

Written By Michael, Newtown, PA on Monday, January 26, 2009

We had limited radio reception for some of our favorite stations. Most of these stations had HD "sister" stations so we bought this HD radio.

Great clarity. Excellent unit.

Typical Sony Product.

Written By Paul, Spokane, WA. on Thursday, January 22, 2009

When I say typical Sony product, I mean a product that has been well thought-out as far as design, features and performance. The smaller size makes it appropriate for just about any area of the house, not just the night stand or head board. But don't let the small size fool you into thinking this is no powerhouse of sound. Crisp sound quality from the radio or iPod including high highs and low lows, with no distortion at elevated levels. And the ease of setting the alarm and channel preferences is unmatched.

I admit, the price is a little high but the enjoyment you get from the quality of the product more than offsets the pain you feel in spending your hard-earned money. I recommend this player to anyone who is looking for a replacement alarm clock or even just a standalone iPod music player.

Good things really do come in small packages.

Much better reception than our previous ipod compatible radio. FM stations are perfect, AM are improved. Small footprint, fits nicely in our kitchen. I would buy it again.

Excellent Product For Price

Written By Michael B, Fullerton, CA on Sunday, October 26, 2008

I really like this alarm clock radio.
Then only problem that I have with it, was the transformer in the middle of the power cord. It makes it a little hard to put the cord thru a hole in your Headboard! This could be fixed by having a connector between the transformer and the radio.

Stunning audio quality

Written By William, San Leandro, CA on Monday, August 04, 2008

I needed to upgrade my ultra-cheap bedside alarm clock radio, and was looking for something that did HD radio and could play iPod. I was initially concerned there wouldn't be much content but after looking on the web it seemed this was not going to be a problem in the SF Bay Area.

When I plugged this puppy in and started listening I was simply amazed at the quality of the sound. My previous $20 unit had static and poor, muffled sound. HD radio -including the surround option that this unit has- was like daytime after night. It's uncanny. Public radio really sounded like people sitting down next to me chatting. No static, beautiful dynamic range (for a bedside unit). Five star material.

The display is a little quirky. SUPER bright, although you can ratchet it down a little. It lights up my bedroom at night. Also - when I'm listening to HD radio there's so much information on the screen that there's no room for a display of the time -- look at the picture of the unit. When I wake in the morning I like to keep track of the time, and you can't if it's in HD mode.

The tagging facility is SO cool. If I'm listening to music I like , I can hit a button and it syncs up with iTunes (via the iPod). I haven't done this yet (I got the unit yesterday) but I was so pleased with the unit I completely had to write a positive review. Get it!
