Niles Audio

Our take on the Niles RS6

Get spacious outdoor sound from a speaker that will blend right in with your backyard. Niles designed the RS6 speaker to look like an actual rock, so it will disappear into the surrounding landscape. Plus, you'll enjoy exceptional outdoor audio thanks to Niles' careful design and attention to detail. Pick up a pair of RS6s for stereo sound, or more to fill a very large outdoor area with bold, wide-open sound.

The RS6 features a 1" dome tweeter for crisp highs and a 6-1/2" woofer for rich midrange and bass. Niles mounts the drivers closer behind the grille than most rock speaker manufacturers for more accurate sound with better imaging. And the tweeter is angled upwards 20º, so the high frequencies are aimed at the listener and not the ground.

The RS6 is completely weatherproof — you can leave it outside fully exposed to the elements, worry-free. It has passed some of the most stringent environmental tests ever devised for outdoor speakers, including extensive Salt Fog and UV Exposure testing. Plus, it can handle extreme temperatures, from -50º to 185º Fahrenheit. You'll enjoy "rock"-solid sound for years to come.

Overview: The Niles RS6 loudspeaker is a two-way loudspeaker in an acoustic suspension enclosure. The cabinet is styled to look like a rock. It is supplied with a security bracket and cable to insure it stays where you put it. The speaker is designed and built to withstand the environmental stresses placed on an outdoor loudspeaker.

Driver Technology

ConeForward Design: This design mounts the woofer and tweeter as close to the grille as possible giving you excellent imaging from an outdoor loudspeaker.

Woofer: The RS6 uses a 6.5" TCC (talc, carbon, ceramic) filled polypropylene woofer. The unusually stiff cone, the butyl rubber surround and substantial magnet and motor structure are optimized for large excursions of the woofer. The 6.5" woofer is designed to provide rich deep bass and outstanding weather resistance capabilities.

Tweeter: The RS6 uses a 1" Teteron tweeter that utilizes a tri-laminate design consisting of an inner textile layer which forms the dome, a high damping layer to kill unwanted resonances and an outside layer of urethane to add stiffness and prevent breakup modes. The result is a transparent clear, natural sounding tweeter which still maintains its extended frequency response and is completely weatherproof.

Tweeter Placement: The tweeter is angled twenty degrees up from the woofer so it is aimed at the listener and not at the ground. This improves the high frequency coverage of the loudspeaker and ensures that all the benefits of the tweeter are heard and not lost in the surroundings.

Precision Crossover: A customized electronic dividing network inside the cabinet precisely distributes the music to the woofer and the tweeter. The three-pole, two-way design of the RS6 crossover provides excellent stereo imaging, low distortion and superior sonic performance.

Enclosure Design

GeoRealistic Styling: The RS6's enclosure has unique textures and colors to make it look like a natural rock. The speaker grilles are designed so they blend into the cabinet.

Weatherproof: The cabinet is made from fiberglass; it utilizes double seals on the tweeter, woofer and enclosure cover. The drivers are designed to drain water away from them and are made from weather resistant material. The grilles are painted aluminum to stand up to the harsh outdoor environment. The speaker has passed test requirements for salt fog, operating temperature, storage temperature, UV exposure and humidity per military standard 883.

Rigid Acoustically Inert Cabinet Construction: Niles utilizes a unique 4-layer cabinet construction to achieve superior non-resonance of the speaker cabinet. This insures that all your hear is the music and not cabinet noise.

Grille: The aluminum Microperf grille on the RS6 has hundreds of precisely sized perforations, creating an acoustically transparent grille. The aluminum construction resist oxidation enabling years of trouble-free operation in the harshest of conditions. Niles paints both sides of the grille for added protection.

Connections

Speaker Cable Connection: To make sure the speaker connection is trouble-free, the RS6 features a two-foot connection cable rated for burial underground and specialized waterproof wire nuts. The wire nuts are filled with a waterproof sealant.

Wiring Requirements: 2-conductor direct burial cable is recommended at the following sizes depending on the longest length of cable required:

  • 16 gauge: maximum distance of 60 ft
  • 14 gauge: maximum distance of 100 ft
  • 12 gauge: maximum distance of 160 ft

Power Rating: An amplifier rated at 10 to 150 watts is recommended to power the RS6.

Fabulous Speakers

Written By Mike M, Lincroft, NJ on Thursday, June 23, 2011

I spent a few months debating which outdoor speakers to buy for my deck. I listened to countless models, but could not make up my mind. My deck covers most of the back of my house and it seemed I would have to buy two sets of traditional outdoor speakers mounted on my house. Instead, I decided to go with one pair of the Niles rock speakers and was blown away by the sound. The bass is strong and the mid and upper range is crisp and clear. Two speakers adequately covers my entire deck area when placed in the flower beds which are some 10 feet from and 4 feet below the level of the deck. I could not be happier.

Nice outdoor speaker

Written By JoeA, Ohio on Wednesday, March 23, 2011

I needed a speaker for my outdoor patio and didn't want to run wires through the house siding. If I was going to buy the regular speakers I would need two speakers for adequate sound. The single rock speaker seemed more than adequate as I was able to place it in a corner to help with the bass. The bass is adequate, it's still not the same as having a subwoofer, but it still sounds good. The sound quality is very good from the speaker overall. The rock speaker looks nice and fits in with my stone walls etc. The sound is very good for one speaker, I didn't need a 2nd speaker. I didn't mind the price considering it has a lifetime warranty, who knows if the company will be arround in 10 years though. I only recently bought the speaker, so I can't vouch for the durability. Crutchfield had the speaker for $60 less than the local big box, you do the math.

Great Outdoor Speakers

Written By PaulS, Lorton, VA on Tuesday, October 05, 2010

I have two pair of speakers around our deck / pool - both Polk Audio and the Niles RS6.
The Niles RS6 have great fidelity sound - far better sound than the Polk speakers. The
bass sound is almost unbelieveable. Honestly, I was surprised at the clarity. I do have
them hooked up to a Yamaha A/V 250w per channelReceiver.

Only drawback - lost the tweeter in one after 5 years of use and the Niles replacement
warrantly does not apply to the older products.

Amazing sound and Definetly recommend

Written By jasontv8, St James, NY on Sunday, April 04, 2010

I purchased these speakers after researching extensively, and I was going to buy a lower end model. I didn't want to spend this money on a single speaker. I AM REALLY GLAD I WENT FOR THIS!
My original intent was to use this speaker around the backyard to SUPPLEMENT a pair of JBL outdoor bookshelf speakers, and was hoping these would fill in music by the pool area, as well as buy the kids play area. Little did I know, these WOULD BLOW AWAY THE BOOKSHELF SPEAKERS.
I am now going to order ANOTHER SPEAKER and not hang the JBL speakers, as there is no need. The sound from these rock speakers fills out my backyard (.5 acre) really well. Great range of sound, and I'm using a 15 year old Sony stereo amp to power these. The 60 db range low end really provides a great range of sound. Using Pandora via ipod and the radio, so lots of different music and all sounded great.

Buy as many as you can afford!!!!

Great Sound, Clean Appearance

Written By James, Richmond, VA on Friday, May 18, 2007

Great sounding speakers. I installed these speakers outside around the foundation of my house (of which the granite color blended in perfectly) to be listened to around our pool. These are heavy duty speakers and will require some power. Running through a whole house audio set-up without an amp the volume was minimal. However, after I hooked up this pair to a Niles amp these speakers really came to life! They produce a great bass note in an outdoor setting which is impressive for a 6-1/2 speaker! Highly recommended.
