Niles Audio

Our take on the Niles SVC100R

These in-wall stereo volume controls from Niles offer intuitive operation for your multi-room audio system. The high-power, impedance-magnifying design lets you safely connect as many as eight controls and eight pairs of speakers to a typical receiver or amplifier without installing a speaker selector or any other type of protection device. The sliding control design provides an attractive, modern look.

If your amp's minimum impedance is 8 ohms, you can connect up to 8 pairs of 8-ohm speakers using these volume controls. If your amp's minimum impedance is 4 ohms, you can connect up to 16 pairs of 8 ohms speakers, or 8 pairs of 4 ohm speakers.

Features

Overview: The Niles Audio SVC100R is a high power stereo speaker sliding volume control that connects between the speaker-level output of an amplifier, speaker selector, or a Niles VCS HUB8 distribution hub and a pair of speakers. Premium-quality parts and construction ensure high-fidelity sound with flat frequency response (+/-1.2 dB), 54dB maximum attenuation, and 100 watts continuous power handling.

Universal Impedance Magnifying Circuit: A universal impedance magnifying circuit enables the SVC100R to act as both a stereo and an impedance magnifying volume control. You can magnify the speakers' impedance by a factor of two, four, or eight, allowing you to connect up to eight pairs of speakers to a single amplifier or receiver.

12-Position Control: The make-before-break switch design delivers 12-step, pop-free control for a wide range of listening volumes.

Autoformers: Precision autoformers provide superior sonic performance, exceeding the audio quality of non-impedance magnifying volume controls.

Removable Screwless Speaker Connectors: Two piece, screwless speaker connectors make installation quick and secure. Each connector can accept up to 14-gauge wire.

Isolated Grounds: Isolated left and right-channel grounds ensure safety with any amplifier.

Mounting: The SVC100R fits into most 18-cubic-inch single-gang junction boxes.

Impedance Compatibility: The SVC100R can be used with 4-, 6-, or 8-ohm speaker systems.

Installation Considerations

Junction Boxes: The mounting depth of the SVC100R is 2-9/16". When installed, the unit extends 2-1/16" behind the sheetrock (assuming 1/2" sheetrock). For installation, you must use a standard 18 cubic inch or larger junction box.

Speaker Wire: The SVC100R will accept stranded copper wire up to 14-gauge. Larger (lower gauge) wire is not recommended, as it will not fit into the connectors. Solid-core, aluminum, or "Romex" wire is not recommended. Most states require in-wall speaker wire to have a specific "CL" fire rating.

Mounting Location: You can install the SVC100R in just about any location where in-wall space exists, though it should not be installed into a junction box with 110 volt devices, such as light switches or dimmers. Speaker wire can act as an antenna for electrical noise, and locating speaker wire too close to a light switch or dimmer may cause the speakers to emit a popping or buzzing sound.

Required Tools: To install the SVC100R, you will need the following tools: 1/8" standard slotted screwdriver, 1/4" standard slotted screwdriver, and wire stripper. Other tools may be required to prepare the wall and junction box to accept the volume control.

Well worth the extra cost

Written By DavidD, Beverly Hills, FL on Wednesday, August 31, 2011

I bought a complete home stereo system from Crutchfield but tried to save a doller on the volume control switches by buying another brand from a different supplier. BIG MISTAKE!!! The switches arrived at my home and two were broken on arrival, quality of construction on the other units was a joke, and I did not even attempt to try out the ones that were not broken. It was so obvious that I should have purchased the Niles units from Crutchfield that I promply returned the poor quality units to the supplier and contacted Crutchfield for 8 Niles sliding volume control units. The saying, "A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link" definitely holds true when building a home stereo system. All my work in installing quality speakers, wiring and a Niles amp would have been for naught had I used anything but the Niles volume control switches. Buy them, you won't regret it.

worth the money

Written By Jeremy, Lafayette, LA on Sunday, February 01, 2009

excellent product. I ran speakers throughout my house and have these controls in every room. I prefer these slider controls over the turn knob controls because you can tell from a glance across the room what level the volume is set at before you turn on the music and accidentally blast your eardrums out (especially useful if you have kids that like to adjust everything in your house ;-)
They are also easy to install and fit in a normal sized junction box easily. I have a few of the Niles weatherproof volume controls, and this was not the case, for those controls I had to cut out the back of the junction boxes for them to fit. But these inside slider controls are great and easy to install.
I highly recommend this product and would buy them again.
