Product Research

Features

Overview: The XM SkyDock allows you to receive XM Satellite Radio in your vehicle, using your iPhone or iPod touch. The XM SkyDock has a built-in XM Satellite Radio tuner which is controlled by your docked iPod touch or iPhone, using the free XM SkyDock App available from the Apple App store. The XM SkyDock then transmits the XM Satellite Radio audio to your vehicle's stereo system via its built-in FM transmitter or your headunit's auxiliary input (if applicable). The XM SkyDock will also charge the battery of your iPod touch or iPhone while docked, as long as the dock is receiving power from your vehicle. In addition, you can listen to any music or audio application stored on your iPod or iPhone through your vehicle's stereo system using the XM SkyDock.

Note: Apple iPod and iPhone sold separately.

XM Satellite Radio: The XM SkyDock requires an XM Satellite Radio subscription. XM Satellite Radio offers a great variety of programming such as commercial free music of almost any genre (Pop, Rock, Dance, Hip-Hop, R&B, Country, Christian, Jazz, Blues, Classical, Latin), sports (MLB, NHL, college games, PGA tour), talk radio (NPR), comedy (Laugh Attack, The Foxxhole), news (CNN, CSPAN, CNBC, BBC), and entertainment (Oprah, Cosmo). XM Radio provides superior digital sound quality coast-to-coast. XM also offers instant traffic and weather alerts for 21 major US cities.

Note: . You can also add "The Best of SIRIUS"' to enjoy premium channels from the SIRIUS lineup.

XM SkyDock APP: A free XM SkyDock application is required and available for download from the Apple App Store for your iPod touch or iPhone.

Interchangeable: The XM SkyDock App on your iPod touch or iPhone is not linked to a specific dock. You can use your iPod touch or iPhone in any XM SkyDock as long as that dock has an active XM subscription. All of your personal settings, including your Favorites list, Tagged Songs, Sports and Stock Tickers, will follow your iPod touch or iPhone to any other XM SkyDock.

Note: Some channels available on your XM SkyDock may not be available on a different dock, if it does not have the same subscription package as the original. The available channels are controlled by the subscription package of the XM SkyDock.

iPod/iPhone Compatibility: The XM SkyDock is made for Apple iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd/4th generation) and iPhone (3G/3GS/4/4S). iPod touch and iPhone models require iPhone OS 3.0 or later.

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the device and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to revert to the older software version or wait until an newer software update is available.

iPhone Capability: If you leave your iPhone in the XM SkyDock when you answer the call, the phone audio will come from the speakers built into the iPhone. However, if your vehicle has a built-in Bluetooth hands-free system, then your call will be heard through that system and not the iPhone speakers. As long as you do not remove the iPhone to take the call, the XM SkyDock will automatically tune to the last channel you were listening to before you answered the call.

Magnetic Antenna: The unit comes supplied with a magnetic antenna that is designed to be run outside of the vehicle and placed on the roof of your vehicle. The magnetic antenna will adhere to your vehicle's sheet metal. The magnetic antenna measures 1.4375" wide x 0.5625" tall x 1.75" deep, and features an attached 11' cable terminated by a SMB connector.

Connection: The XM SkyDock Satellite Radio Receiver provides three connection options to transfer XM Satellite Radio audio to your vehicle's audio system.

  • PowerConnect: The XM SkyDock Satellite Radio receiver feature an integrated PowerConnect FM transmitter/cigarette lighter adapter which allows the XM Satellite Radio receiver to wirelessly transmit audio to your vehicle's in-dash headunit over and FM frequency. You can choose from any FM frequency between: 88.1 and 107.9 MHz. You can store up to 4 FM stations so you can quickly access the stations which give you the best audio reception when using the PowerConnect. The PowerConnect FM transmitter/cigarette lighter adapter simply plugs into the power port of the included vehicle dock and the cigarette lighter or 12-volt accessory port of your vehicle.
  • Auxiliary: The XM SkyDock Satellite Radio receiver also has a minijack audio output (3.5mm) to connect the unit directly to your in-dash headunit's auxiliary input (if applicable), using the supplied stereo minijack cable. When using the line output jack, you can adjust the level to match your headunit's other sources.
  • FM Direct (optional): The FM Direct Adaptor (607FMDA25, sold separately) connects directly in-line with your vehicle's existing AM/FM antenna input (Motorola) and the XM Satellite receiver's FM output (2.5mm). This optimizes the XM receiver's built-in FM modulator to your vehicle's radio, especially in regions with a high density of FM radio stations and few open FM channels.

Mounting: The XM SkyDock mounts into your vehicle's cigarette lighter or power adapter socket. The XM SkyDock's integrated PowerConnect FM transmitter/cigarette lighter adapter features a flexible stalk which allows you to adjust the angle of the XM SkyDock. The XM SkyDock's flexible stalk give you lots of freedom to position your iPhone or iPod touch so it is convenient for you to use. You can twist the stalk up to 90-degrees in either directions, and bend it to the be clear of controls or other items in your vehicle.

Portrait or Landscape View: The XM SkyDock allows you to use your iPod touch or iPhone in portrait or landscape view. Your iPod touch or iPhone will display XM Satellite information such as the current tuned channel, the song or show being played, the artist's name, an other information.

Note: The XM SkyDock is not equipped with its own display.

Controls: The XM SkyDock only has two control buttons which allow you to power the unit on/off and select FM presets. You will use your docked iPhone or iPod touch to control all other functions of the XM SkyDock from the downloaded XM SkyDock App.

Real-Time Channel Guide: The on-screen Real-Time Channel Guide allows you to browse programs, artists, and songs playing on other channels, without having to channel the channel you are currently listening to.

Favorites: You can save and enjoy fast access to up to 12 of your favorite XM Satellite Radio channels.

Direct Tuning: An on-screen keypad (0-9) allows you to directly tune in an XM Satellite Radio station.

Song Tagging: Song Tagging allows you to discover new music and easily purchase from iTunes to expand your personal music library. You can tag any artist/song combination and set the XM Sky Dock to alert you when either the artist or song is paying on any channel at any time. You can then choose to purchase the song from iTunes. The XM SkyDock can track up to 50 of your favorite songs or artists.

Alert: You can set alerts to notify you when your favorite song, artist, or sports team is playing on other channels.

Stock and Sports Tickers: The Stock and Sports Ticker allows you to track  your favorite stores and sports teams. The XM SkyDock can display a ticker that shows you the scores of y our favorite sports teams and the prices and movement of your designated stocks (up to 64).

Traffic & Weather: You can jump to your pre-selected traffic and weather channel with one touch.

Parental Controls: The Parental Control screen lets you lock channels you do not want others (such as children) to access without your permission. Your locked channels are protected by a 4-digit code.

Q
How does this work with an iPod in a car if there is no 3G or 4g signal?

Through your aux port and xm antenna.

hi scott, its works good, the xm works off your fm transmitter in your car radio, you only need 3g/4g when you are using maps or your iphone. i love my xm skydoc, i even use it with my old iphone 3 and get great reception, i use it just for music. hope this was helpful.

The skydock uses the xm antenna connection so you don't use your data plan
calvin e  Mar 31, 2014

The XM skydock's signal comes from the included satellite antenna. You don't need any cell tower reception. You only need to download the app and your good to go. We use ours in the desert when we go off roading where there is no cell phone signal at all.
john  Mar 31, 2014
A
too cumbersome.

Sky Dock does not require WiFi or phone service. Once you have the Sky Dock, plug in your iPod and get the XM App and get the radio receiver number, you can start listening to XM. Although you have to have XM service paid and an XM antenna plugged into it. If you do not have an AUX on your radio and will be using the FM, I recommend the FM transmitter as well
kenneth  Mar 31, 2014
A
The Skydock is a SiriusXM receiver and it uses a satellite signal (just like a GPS) not a cell signal. You have to purchase a subscription to SiriusXM radio in order to receive the signal.
laura  Mar 31, 2014

There are certain frequencies on the radio stations that allow for shortwave radio transmission. By programming your stereo to like 88.3 or 87.9 just depended upon your location. This allows the SkyDock to transfer the transmission over the air on an open frequency of your radio.
jeffrey  Mar 31, 2014

The xm works through satellite feed so 3G or 4g is not necessary...u can play prerecorded and stream audio through the sky dock and charge your phone.

The overview says that the SkyDock is compatible with the iPhone 3G/3GS/4/4S. Is it also compatible with the iPhone 5 series?

I'm using a iPhone 4 with iOS7 (big mistake, but that's another story) and it works. You'll need a 30 pin converter..

How - how difficult is it to set up the antenna? How do I get the cable to the exterior of the car?

If you haven't bought it yet, don't. Mine is still in the box. They make you think it is very easy to set up. Just plug it in and go with it. But that is not how it works, The antenna is a real problem. I didn't think it had an antenna. Your better off with another radio than to buy this one. If you have it, you probably won't be happy with it. If I could get my money back and get something else, I would. Dennis C.

The antenna lead is quite long. I mounted the magnetic base in from of my windshield since I have a soft top Jeep. I ran the lead between the hood and windshield and found an opening in the firewall to pass the lead through. The whole process only took about 5 minutes. The lead is very thin and the connector is small so it will fit through just about any opening.

Installing the antenna is not difficult. I mounted my antenna above the center of the front windshield. I routed the wire behind the weather stripping of the windshield down to the door. Next, I ran the wire behind the weather stripping of the door and behind the dashboard. I brought the wire out from behind the ashtray near the cigarette lighter/12 volt outlet. I used a video on youtube as a guide. Just do a search on "How to install satellite radio antenna". The video I used is 6:27 in length.
