About the Olympus Stylus Tough-8000

Chris Egner
Capture cool underwater pictures at the beach with this waterproof camera from Olympus. The rugged Stylus Tough-8000 is built to withstand immersion down to 33 feet, accidental drops from five feet, or the 220-pound pressure of someone or something on top of it. You can even film movie clips of kids or dogs swimming below the surface of the water. And because the body is airtight, you can take photos at a campsite or on the baseball diamond without worrying about dust or dirt getting inside the camera.

A unique tap control feature lets you select key settings with a simple tap against the top, back, or side of the camera — handy for underwater photography, or when you're wearing gloves. You also get an in-camera panorama mode that records three images and automatically stitches them together. Just hit the shutter button and pan slowly across the scene to take pictures of a whole school of fish, a ship from bow to stern, or a shoreline full of sand sculptures. A powerful 12-megapixel image sensor gives you plenty of detail, from closeups of seashells to snapshots of friends having fun in the sun.

The camera's built-in 45MB memory holds about seven pictures at top resolution — add optional xD-Picture Cards™ for more storage.

Shock/Crush/Water/Freeze-Proof: The Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 is a rugged, everyday camera, designed for on-the-go photographers. The camera has a durable metal body and a floating circuit board, making it able to withstand a 5.0-foot fall, drop or other mishap (MIL-STD-810F standard). With its rugged body and reinforced LCD, the ST-8000 withstands up to 220 pounds of pressure so the camera and your images are protected. Its innovative waterproof seals and gaskets allow you to take underwater movies and pictures in the pool, lake, or ocean, up to 33 foot depths (IEC60529-IPX8/JISC0920 standard). For those who want to take pictures on the slopes, the camera can withstand temperature extremes down to 14° F (MIL-STD-810F standard).

Tap Control: You can operate picture playback, shadow adjustment and flash mode just by tapping the top, back and sides of the camera. Ideal for underwater use, wearing gloves or other situations where traditional buttons may be impossible to use.

LCD Monitor: The camera is equipped with a 2.7" HyperCrystal III color TFT LCD monitor with approximately 230,000 pixels. The monitor features a 5-step brightness adjustment, anti-glare technology, and an extra-wide viewing angle. The LCD monitor allows you to view images being taken as well as review stored images, even in direct sunlight.

12.0 Megapixel Image Sensor: The digital camera's high-resolution 12.0-megapixel image sensor delivers superior quality for larger prints without sacrificing detail. The camera features a 1/2.33" CCD (primary color filter) with 12,700,000 gross pixels and an effective pixel count of 12,000,000.

Image Processing: This camera uses the TruePic III image processor, which was developed for the professional Digital SLR, to deliver superior images with true-to-life color, sharper detail, and less noise.

Optics: The ST-8000 is equipped with a 5.0-18.2mm zoom lens (equivalent to 28-102mm in 35mm photography), with 10 lenses in 8 groups, including 2 aspherical lenses and 1 ED lens.

3.6x Optical/5x Digital Zoom: The camera has a 3.6x optical zoom to deliver sharper, clearer images and bring you closer to the action without taking a step. In addition to the 3.6x optical zoom, the camera has a 5x digital zoom. This gives you a seamless total zoom of 18x. The camera also features a Fine Zoom setting which combines the camera's optical zoom and image cropping for approximately a 21x zoom which does not reduce the image quality of your picture.

Dual Image Stabilization: Dual Image Stabilization combines Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization with high ISO sensitivity and fast shutter speeds so you can capture crisp, clear images even if the subject is moving. Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization compensates for camera shake to keep your shots steady while Digital Image Stabilization captures crisp, clear images in any situation.

Recording Media: The Olympus ST-8000 digital camera records still images or motion video on the internal memory (45 MB), an optional xD Picture Card (16MB-2GB) or an optional microSD/SDHC card using the supplied microSD attachment. Still images are recorded in JPEG format. Motion video is recorded in AVI (Motion JPEG video and WAV audio).

Image/Video Resolution: Several recording settings are available for still pictures and motion video, requiring varying amounts of memory:

AF Mode: There are two AF (auto focus) modes:

  • iESP: The camera determines the subject, even when not in the center
  • Face Detection: The Olympus ST-8000 has a Face Detection feature which tracks faces within the frame, and focuses and optimizes exposure for sharp, brilliant portraits. Tracks up to 3 faces and automatically focuses and optimizes exposures for sharp, brilliant portrait pictures.
  • Spot: The camera focuses on the subject located within the AF target mark.

Shooting Modes: The Olympus ST-8000 offers the following shooting modes.

  • Single Shot: The camera records one picture each time the shutter release button is pressed.
  • Sequential Shooting: The camera can take one frame at a time, or a sequence of pictures at a time by holding down the shutter button. Normal speed sequential shooting locks the focus and exposure on the first frame, and the shooting speed depends upon the image quality setting. High speed sequential shooting takes pictures at a faster speed than normal speed sequential shooting.
  • Smile Shot: Smile Shot detects a smile on your subject's face and automatically fires off three consecutive shots to capture that perfect smile.
  • Self-Timer: You can take pictures of yourself with the built-in 12-second self timer. When activated, the Self Timer LED on the front of the camera glows for 10 seconds, then blinks for 2 seconds before the shutter is released.
  • Pre-capture Movie: After pressing the shutter button, a movie that lasts 7 seconds (2 seconds before pressing the shutter button and 5 seconds after) will be saved. No sound will be recorded.

Panorama Shooting: The Olympus ST-8000 allows you to create panoramic images within the camera or using your computer via the supplied software. You can choose from the following Panorama Modes.

  • Combine In Camera 1: Three frames are taken and combined by the camera. The user only composes the shots so that the target marks and pointers overlap, and the camera automatically releases the shutter. The shooting functions are already preset to the optimum settings for panoramic shooting.
  • Combine In Camera 2: Three frames are taken and combined by the camera. The user composes the shots using the guide frame and manually releases the shutter.
  • Combine In Computer: Using the included software it is possible to connect images with overlapping edges together into a single panoramic image. You can connect together up to 10 images either horizontally or vertically. This function requires the use of an xD Picture Card.

Exposure Modes: The Olympus ST-8000 offers the following camera exposure modes.

  • P/Auto Mode: In this mode, the camera automatically adjusts the aperture value and shutter speed while allowing you to change to a wide range of other shooting menu functions such as exposure compensation and white balance.
  • Intelligent Auto (iAuto): In this mode, the camera automatically select the best shooting mode for the scene from: Portrait, Landscape, Night+Portrait, Sport, or Macro.
  • Scene Presets: The ST-8000 camera offers various scene presets, optimizing the shutter speed and exposure for specific conditions and subjects. You can choose from the following scene presets: Portrait, Landscape, Night Scene, Night + Portrait, Sport, Indoor, Candle, Self-Portrait, Sunset, Fireworks, Cuisine, Documents, Beach, Snow, Underwater Snapshot, Underwater Wide, Underwater Wide 2, and Underwater Macro.
  • Beauty Mode: The camera finds a person's face and gives the skin a smooth, translucent look.

Exposure Compensation: In some situations, you may get better results by adjusting the exposure slightly using exposure compensation. You can adjust from -2.0 to + 2.0 EV in 1/3 stop increments.

Exposure Metering: You can select the camera's range for measuring the brightness of your still shot.

  • ESP: Shoots to obtain a balanced brightness over the entire screen.
  • Spot: Shoots the subject at the center during backlighting.

ISO Sensitivity: The higher the ISO value, the greater the camera's light sensitivity and better its ability to shoot in low light. The ST-8000 can automatically (Auto or High Auto) set the camera's sensitivity according to the conditions around the subject, or your can manually set 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, or 1600.

White Balance: The camera offers an Auto White Balance function which automatically adjust the camera's white balance according to your shooting scene. you can also choose between the following preset settings - Outdoor in sunny, Outdoor in cloudy, Incandescent, Warm Fluorescent, Neutral White Fluorescent, or Cool white fluorescent.

Built-In Flash: The camera's built-in flash operates in the following modes:

  • Flash Auto: The flash fires automatically in low light or backlight conditions.
  • Red-eye Reduction Flash: This emits pre-flashes for red-eye reduction.
  • Fill-in Flash: The flash fires regardless of the available light.
  • Flash Off: The flash does not fire.

LED Illuminator: In a dark location, the LED illuminator can be used as an auxiliary light to see things or compose shots.

Backlight Boost: This function immediately boosts the brightness of the camera's LCD monitor. The monitor returns to the original brightness if no operation is performed for 10 seconds.

Shadow Adjustment: The camera finds a person's face that has been darkened by backlight and makes it appear brighter for taking the picture.

Still Image Audio Recording: The camera's built-in microphone can be set to record four seconds of audio after the shutter button is released and the picture is taken. In the playback menu, you can add up to 4 seconds of audio to still pictures.

Shooting Display: The display of the camera's screen information can be changed to best match the shooting situation, such as for the need of a clear view of the screen, or for making a precise composition by using the unit's grid display.

Histogram: A histogram is a graph showing the brightness of an image. The graph display indicates a bright image when skewed to the right side, and a dark image when skewed to the left side.

Time and Date Information: The camera has an internal clock, and the time and date information can be recorded on each image, if desired.

Pixel Mapping: In rare cases, the camera may acquire dead or stuck pixels in the CCD. Pixel Mapping allows you to engage a menu function and refresh the CCD, instead of having to send the camera back to an Olympus service center. It is recommended that Pixel Mapping be done once a year.

Play, Edit, and Print Features

Image Review: When this function is activated, pictures that are taken are automatically briefly displayed immediately after being shot.

Vital camera settings (such as exposure mode, white balance, exposure time) and scene data are recorded to the image file when it's captured. Printers compatible with Exif Print are able to use this information to produce high quality photographs, exactly the way they were intended at the time of capture. This intelligent communication process also allows the printer to correct for poor lighting or mistakes, resulting in prints that can be even better than the originals.

Print Reservation: Applying Print Reservation to your pictures allows you to take the xD-Picture Card to a DPOF-compatible photo lab for printing, or print them on a DPOF-compatible printer at home, without using a computer.
