Features
LCD Monitor: The Canon PowerShot
G10 has a large 3" PureColor II LCD
monitor featuring approximately 461,000 pixels. The monitor has a near 100%
picture coverage. You can adjust the brightness to any of 15 levels using the
Set Up menu, or temporarily increase the brightness using the Display button.
Optical Viewfinder: In addition to
the LCD monitor, the camera has a 0.59" (15mm), real-image optical zoom viewfinder with a dioptric adjustment to let you focus the image in the viewfinder to your vision.
The viewfinder has approximately 77% picture coverage. When shooting closeups,
it is recommended that you use the LCD monitor to frame your shot.
Image Stabilizer: Canon's
exclusive Optical Image Stabilizer helps you achieves excellent quality images
in situations prone to camera shake and image blurring. Whether you're
shooting outdoors at dusk, inside without a flash, or at the end of the zoom
range, camera motion is detected and a corrective signal is generated to prevent
any degradation of image quality.
DIGIC 4 Image Processor: The PowerShot G10 features Canon's
proprietary DIGIC 4 Image Processor. The DIGIC 4 chip improves Face Detection,
and adds Servo AF, Face Detection Self-Timer, and Intelligent Contrast
Correction for greater flexibility. The DIGIC 4 chip gives you more accurate
noise reduction, and delivers better image quality, even at higher ISO speeds.
iSAPS Technology: The iSAPS (Intelligent Scene Analysis
based on Photographic Space) technology uses an internal database of thousands
of photographs to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and
white balance.
Face Detection Technology: The DIGIC 4 chip includes Face
Detection Auto Focus/Auto Exposure technology. Face Detection finds all the
faces in the frame and sets the most suitable focus point. Exposure and flash
are controlled to ensure proper illumination of both the faces and the overall
scene, eliminating the common problem of overexposed faces.
Face Self-Timer: The Face Self-Timer automatically detects
an increase in the number of faces in the shot and makes the appropriate
adjustment. This allows the photographer to be included in a group shot when
using the self-timer. The photographer has up to 30 seconds to get into the
picture, so there is no longer a need to rush. The camera will take up to three
shots starting two seconds after the face has been detected.
Servo AF: The Servo AF retains focus on a moving subject
after the shutter button is pressed halfway. This allows you to wait for the
perfect shot without having to refocus.
Intelligent Contrast Correction: The Intelligent Contrast
Correction system controls the compensation level in pixel units to brighten
dark areas while leaving bright the areas unchanged to make better images where
the main subject is dark, and for a more natural transition. I-Contrast can also
be used in playback mode to adjust images that were shot without the setting
activated.
Image Sensor:
For optimal image quality, the camera uses a 1/1.7" CCD image sensor with
approximately 15-million total pixels and 14.7-million effective pixels.
Recording Media:
The camera records still images or moving images with mono audio on SD Memory
Cards, SDHC Memory Cards, MultiMediaCards, MMCPlus cards, and
HC MMCplus cards. Still images are recorded in
JPEG or RAW, and the movies are recorded in MOV format (Image data: H.264, Audio
data: Monaural Linear PCM).
Still Image Resolution/Compression:
You
can choose from the following still image resolutions: Large (4416 x 3312),
Medium 1 (3456 x 2592),
Medium 2 (2592 x 1944 pixels), Medium 3 (1600 x 1200 pixels), and Small (640 x 480
pixels). You can also select a Widescreen (4416
x 2480) size for displaying large images on a computer monitor or HDTV. For each resolution, you can set the compression to Superfine, Fine or
Normal.
RAW File Format:
The RAW file format records the image data as captured by the camera imaging
element without further processing. The images show almost no deterioration in
image quality, and are a higher quality than JPEG images. To view RAW images on
your computer, you must use the supplied software (ZoomBrowser EX/Image
Browser). Using the software's image processing function, you can broadly adjust
the images without deterioration, and then convert the image to a JPEG, TIFF, or
other type of image in line with your intended use. You can choose to record RAW
files or JPEG files alone, or you can record RAW files and JPEG files
simultaneously.

Optics: The camera features a
5x optical zoom lens. The 4x digital zoom extends the telephoto capabilities to
a total zoom of approximately 20x. Its focal length is 6.1mm (W) to 30.5mm (T),
which is equivalent to 28mm (W) to 140mm (T) in 35mm photography.
AF Frame Modes: The camera
utilizes TTL (through-the-lens) automatic focusing with four focusing methods:
- Face Detect: camera
automatically detects the position of a face and uses the data to set the
focus and exposure while shooting
- AiAF: camera detects the
subject and highlights the AF frames, from 9 evaluative points, that it will
use to determine the focus
- Center: camera focuses using
the center AF frame, convenient for focusing on a specific part of a subject
- FlexiZone: the AF frame
can be moved manually to the desired area. This is convenient for making
sure the focus is exactly where you want it.
Focus Settings: You can choose
one of the following focus settings:
- Continuous: the camera is
continuously focusing on whatever it is aimed at, even when the shutter
button is not pressed
- Single: the camera only
focuses when the shutter button is pressed
Focus Bracketing: In this mode,
the camera automatically takes three shots; one at the manual focus position,
and one each with focus positions preset farther and nearer. The three shots are
taken at the same interval as continuous shooting.
AF-Assist Beam:
The AF-assist beam will sometimes emit when the shutter button is pressed
halfway to assist focusing in certain conditions, i.e. dark conditions. The
AF-assist beam can be turned off. If animals are your subject, you can turn off
the beam when shooting in the dark to avoid startling them.
Shooting Modes: Using the Mode
Dial on the top of the camera, you can select from numerous shooting modes:
- Auto: camera selects the
settings according to surroundings and conditions
- Image Zone:

Auto Rotate Function:
The PowerShot G10's Auto Rotate function uses an Intelligent Orientation
Sensor to sense whether your images were shot horizontally or vertically. During
playback, the camera automatically rotates the image to the correct viewing
orientation in the display. Auto Rotate can be turned on or off in the menu.
Flash Modes:
The PowerShot G10 has a built-in
flash. Using the Function/Set button, you can select Auto (flash fires in low
light), On (flash always fires), or Off (flash doesn't fire). In the menu, you
can add the following flash functions when the flash is set to On or Auto:
-
Flash Exposure Compensation: Can be adjusted in the
range of -2 to +2 stops in 1/3-stop increments.
-
Flash Output: Can be controlled in three steps, up to
Full, when shooting.
-
Shutter Sync: You can switch the timing at which the
flash fires:
-
When 1st-curtain is selected, the flash fires right after the
shutter opens, regardless of the shutter speed.
-
When 2nd-curtain is selected, the flash fires right before
the shutter closes, regardless of the shutter speed.
-
Slow-Synchro: The flash timing is
adjusted to slow shutter speeds. This reduces the chance that only the
background will appear dark when a person is photographed against a twilight
background or night scene, or when an interior shot is taken.
-
Red-eye Correction: Automatically searches for and
corrects red eyes in the image when the flash fires.
-
Red-eye Lamp: When activated, the red-eye reduction lamp fires when the
flash is used in dark areas. This reduces the light reflecting back from the
eyes, making them appear red.
-
Safety FE: The camera automatically changes the
shutter speed or aperture value when the flash fires to avoid overexposing
and blowing out the highlights in the scene.
Flash Range: The
built-in flash has a range of 12" to 15' in Wide Angle and 1.6' to 9.2' in
Telephoto.

Metering Modes:
You can select from the following metering modes:
-
Evaluative Light
Metering: used for
standard conditions. The area within the frame is divided into several zones
and light is measured based on subject position, brightness, direct light
and backlighting.
-
Center-Weighted Averaging: averages
the exposure from the entire image, but places more weight on the subject at
the center
-
Spot: allows
you to select Center, which meters the area within the spot AE point frame
at the center of the LCD monitor (or viewfinder), or, AF Point, which meters
the spot AF point corresponding to the AF frame
Exposure Compensation:
If you are shooting against a bright background or strong backlight, you may
need to correct the exposure so that the subject doesn't come out too dark. You
can set the adjustments from -2 to +2 in 1/3-step increments.
Auto Exposure
Bracketing: With auto exposure
bracketing (AEB), the camera automatically changes the exposure level up to +/-2
stops in 1/3-stop increments for three successive shots. The three shots are
taken at the same interval as continuous shooting.
Locking the Exposure
Setting (AE Lock): You can set
the exposure and focus separately. This is effective when the contrast is too
strong between the subject and background, or when a subject is backlit.
ND Filter:
The brightness can be decreased by
setting the ND filter on. This allows you to select a smaller aperture and a
slower shutter speed than usual. Standard brightness is decreased to
approximately 1/8 with the filter on. Use of a tripod is recommended when using
this mode.

Auto. An ISO 3200 setting is available as a special scene mode.
Self-Timer: The
self-timer starts when the shutter button is pressed. The delay time can be set
to 10 seconds, 2 seconds, or Custom Timer. The Custom Timer allows you to choose
the timer delay setting: 1-10, 15, 20, or 30 seconds for up to 10 shots. The
Face Self-Timer automatically detects an increase in the number of faces in the
shot and makes the appropriate adjustment. The camera will take up to 10 shots
starting two seconds after the face has been detected.
Editing Movies:
The Edit function in the movie control panel enables you to cut unwanted
portions at the start or the end of a movie clip.
Sound Memos: You
can attach sound memos (up to 60 seconds) to an image while in the replay mode.
