Compose and share photos on the fold-out, rotating LCD screen, or set them up using the electronic viewfinder. Face detection helps you take true-to-life portraits and group photos. The camera focuses on the faces in your frame and adjusts exposure, flash, and white balance settings to accurately portray skin tones, regardless of the surrounding light. Can't decide whether to film a movie clip or take pictures? The SX10 IS lets you do both at the same time.

The SX10 IS doesn't include any type of memory, so make sure to pick up an SD™ card.

Features

LCD Monitor: The Canon PowerShot SX10 IS has a 2.5" low-temperature polycrystalline silicon TFT color vari-angle LCD monitor featuring approximately 230,000 pixels. The monitor has a 100% picture coverage. The high-resolution screen offers a crisp, clear picture to make shooting, playback and using the camera's menu functions especially convenient. The vari-angle LCD monitor can be rotated 270-degrees and swiveled 180-degrees so you can take pictures at nearly every angle. It also features Night Display for easy viewing in low light applications. When shooting in dark conditions, the camera automatically brightens the LCD monitor to suit the brightness of the subject, making it easier to frame the subject.

Viewfinder: The digital camera also features a 0.44" TFT color viewfinder with approximately 235,000 pixels and a 100% picture coverage rate. The viewfinder also has a dioptric adjustment between -6.0 to +2.0m.

DIGIC 4 Image Processor with iSAPS Technology: The PowerShot SX10 IS features the DIGIC 4 Image Processor, designed to improve processing speed, image quality, and efficiency. The DIGIC 4 processor provides faster camera startup, autofocus, and playback, and assures that every image is more colorful and vibrant. The iSAPS (Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) technology uses an internal database of thousands of photographs to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.

Face Detection Technology: The DIGIC 4 chip includes Face Detection technology. Face Detection finds all the faces in the frame and sets the most suitable focus point. In addition the digital camera features Face Select and Track which lets you highlight one face among several in a scene, and the camera will then concentrate on that one person, even as they move around the scene.

Recording Media: The PowerShot SX10 IS records images on SD (Secure Digital), SDHC memory card, MMC (MultiMedia Card), MMCplus card, or HD MMCplus card.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images or moving images with monaural audio. Still images are recorded in JPEG format and movies are recorded in MOV format (Image data: H.264, Audio data: Linear PCM).

Image Sensor: For optimal image quality, the camera uses a 1/2.3" CCD image sensor with approximately 10.3 million total pixels and 10.0 million effective pixels.

Still Image Resolution/Compression: For each resolution other than postcard, you can set the compression to Superfine, Fine, or Normal. Postcard compression is fixed at Fine. There are seven still image resolutions to choose from:

  • Large (10): 3648 x 2736 pixels, 4:3 aspect ratio
  • Wide (7.5M): 3684 x 2048 pixels, 16:9 aspect ratio
  • Medium 1 (6M): 2816 x 2112 pixels, 4:3 aspect ratio
  • Medium 2 (4M): 2272 x 1704 pixels, 4:3 aspect ratio
  • Medium 3 (2M): 1600 x 1200 pixels, 4:3 aspect ratio
  • Small (0.3M): 640 x 480 pixels.

Motion Video Resolution: Movies in standard resolution with stereo sound can be recorded up to the capacity of the memory card (4GB max) or 1 hour, whichever comes first. The unit features two movie resolutions:

  • 640 x 480 pixels (30 frames/sec)
  • 320 x 240 pixels (30 frames/sec)

Optics: The PowerShot SX10 IS is equipped with a 20x Optical Zoom lens with a focal length of 5.0-100mm (35mm film equivalent: 28-560mm) that allows you to shoot any scene from wide-angle to telephoto. The camera uses a VCM (Voice Coil Motor) for high-speed, quiet, energy-efficient lens movement with precise control. Focal length is conveniently indicated on the lens barrel. UD glass effectively suppresses chromatic aberration, while enhanced negative refractive power ensures that distortion at the wide-angle is also corrected. Further aberration is controlled with the inclusion of a double-sided aspherical glass-molded lens and ultra-high refraction index lens.

Digital Zoom: The 4x digital zoom extends the camera's telephoto capabilities to a total zoom of 80x. The digital camera allows you to adjust the Zoom between 4 settings.

  • Standard: enables shooting at zoom factors of up to 80x with digital and optical zooms combined at a focal length of 28mm to 2240mm
  • Off: enables shooting without digital zoom with a focal length of 28mm to 560mm
  • 1.4x: digital zoom is fixed at the select zoom factor of 1.4x for a focal length of 39.2mm to 784mm enabling faster shutter speed and less chance of camera shake
  • 2.3x: digital zoom is fixed at the select zoom factor of 2.3x for a focal length of 64.4mm to 1288mm enabling faster shutter speed and less chance of camera shake

Note: The digital zoom cannot be used in Widescreen mode.

Safety Zoom: Based on the number of recording pixels set, the Safety Zoom feature calculates the maximum zoom factor beyond which image quality will begin to deteriorate. The digital zoom will then pause at this zoom factor for a moment until you want to zoom even closer.

Safety Zoom Factor
Recording Pixels Zoom
Large(3648 x 2736) 20x optical
Medium 1 (2816 x 2112) 20x optical
Medium 2 (2272 x 1704) 28x digital
Medium 3 (1600 x 1200) 46x digital
Small (640 x 480) 80x digital

Optical Image Stabilizing: The Image Stabilizer function allows you to minimize the camera shake which results in blurred images when you shoot distant subjects that have been magnified or when you shoot in dark conditions. You can select Continuous stabilization, Shoot Only stabilization (active when shutter button pressed), Panning stabilization (only stabilizes vertical motion), or Off.

Continuous Shooting Mode: You can use this mode to shoot successive frames while the shutter button is fully pressed. There are three modes:

  • Continuous: records approximately 1.4 images per second, focus is fixed on the original subject distance
  • Continuous AF (auto focus): records approximately 0.7 images per second, focus adjusts as needed
  • Continuous LV (live view): records approximately 0.8 images per second, focus is fixed at a manual setting

Self-Timer: The self-timer starts when the shutter button is pressed. The delay time can be set to 10 seconds, 2 seconds, Custom, or Face Self-Timer. The Custom Timer allows you to choose a timer delay setting of 0-10, 15, 20, or 30 seconds and the number of shots, up to 10. The Face Self-Timer will not shoot until after a new face is detect within the composition. You can change the number of shots for the Face Self-Timer from 1-10.

Note: If the camera does not detect a new face within 30 seconds during the Face Self-Timer, the camera will automatically release the shutter.

AutoFocus Modes: The camera utilizes TTL (through-the-lens) automatic focusing with two auto focus modes:

  • Continuous: the camera is constantly focusing wherever it is aimed, even when the shutter button is not pressed
  • Single: the camera only focuses when the shutter button is pressed halfway, conserving battery power

AutoFocus Area Modes: The camera features two area focusing methods:

  • Face Detect: camera automatically detects the position of a face and uses the data to set the focus and exposure while shooting; the digital camera can recognize up to 9 faces
  • Center: camera fixes the AF frame at the center; this is recommended when the target subject is at the center of the composition
  • FlexiZone: AF frame can be moved manually to the desired area (FlexiZone), making sure the focus is exactly where you want it

AF Zoom: You can zoom the display of the AF frame to check focus when shooting or right after taking a shot.

AF-Assist Beam: The AF-assist beam will sometimes emit when the shutter button is pressed halfway to assist focusing in certain conditions, i.e. dark conditions. The AF-assist beam can be turned off. If animals are your subject, turn off the beam when shooting in the dark to avoid startling them.

Manual Focus: You can select a Manual Focus mode if you want more control, or cannot achieve a good focus automatically. When in the Manual Focus mode a magnified image appears in the center frame on the monitor and a scale is displayed to indicate the approximate focal distance.

Focus Lock: If it becomes difficult to focus on the subject due to low contrast to the surroundings, close up and far away subjects in the same shot, or quickly moving subjects, you can choose to lock the focus or auto focus on an object at a similar distance, then shoot the picture after recomposing the shot.

Focus Bracketing: The camera automatically takes three shots; one at the manual focus position, and one each with focus positions preset farther and nearer. The three shots are taken at the same interval as continuous shooting. The farter and nearer focus positions can be set in three steps - large, medium and small.

Focusing Range: The camera features the following focus ranges:

  • Normal: Use this mode when the distance from the end of the lens to the subject is 1.6' to infinity (W), 3.3' to infinity (T)
  • Macro Mode: You can shoot an object at a close distance or approach an object to shoot close-up. The focusing range from the end of the lens 3.9" to 1.6' (W)
  • Super Macro: You can shoot an object at even a closer distance or approach an object to shoot even more close-up. The focusing range from the end of the lens 0.0" to 3.9" (W)
  • Manual Focus: In this mode the camera can focus from 0.39" to infinity (W), 3.3' to infinity (T)
  • Sports Mode: Use this mode when photographing sporting event when the distance from the end of the lens to the subject is 3.3' to 13.1'.

Shooting Modes: Using the Mode Dial on the top of the camera, you can select from numerous shooting modes:

  • Auto: camera selects the settings according to surroundings and conditions
  • Creative Zone:
    • Program AE (P): the camera automatically sets both the aperture and the shutter speed
    • Shutter Speed Priority (Tv): when you set the shutter speed, the camera sets the aperture
    • Aperture Priority (Av): when you set the aperture, the camera sets the shutter speed
    • Manual (M): you manually set the aperture and the shutter speed
    • Stitch Assist: used to shoot overlapping images that can later be merged (stitched) to create one panoramic image eon your computer

    • Color Accent: use this option to have only the color specified in the screen remain and to transform all others to black and white
    • Color Swap: use this option to transform a color specified in the screen into another
  • Movie: for shooting motion video (you can shoot a high quality still image while shooting a movies)

Exposure Compensation: When shooting against a bright or dark background, you may need to correct the exposure so that the subject is correctly lit. Set from -2 to +2 in 1/3-stop increments.

Locking the Exposure Setting (AE Lock): You can set the exposure and focus separately. This is effective when the contrast is too strong between the subject and background, or when a subject is backlit.

Auto Exposure Bracketing: In this mode, the camera automatically changes the exposure within a set range to take three shots at the same interval as continuous shooting. The images are shot in the following order - standard exposure, underexposure, and overexposure.

Metering Modes: You can select from the following metering modes:

  • Evaluative Light Metering: used for standard conditions, the area within the frame is divided into several zones and light is measured based on subject position, brightness, direct light, and backlighting
  • Center-Weighted Averaging: averages the exposure from the entire image, but places more weight on the subject at the center
  • Spot AE Point: meters the area within the spot metering frame at the center or FlexiZone of the LCD monitor

i-Contrast: When shooting scenes in which faces or subjects appear darkened you can set the camera to automatically detect faces and dark areas and compensate brightness levels while shooting.

ISO 3200: The PowerShot SX10 IS features ISO 3200 and High ISO Auto settings that reduce the effects of camera shake and sharpen subjects in low-light situations with high shutter speeds, giving you greater flexibility for shooting. ISO speed settings include 80, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200 High-ISO Auto, or Auto.

Flash Modes: The PowerShot SX10 IS has a built-in flash which can be manually opened or closed as needed.
