Our take on the Panamax M1500-UPS

Get peace of mind and the convenience of continuous power for your home theater components with Panamax's M1500-UPS. Lightning strikes, blackouts, and "brownout" low-voltage conditions can impair your gear. This power conditioner uses a battery to supply uninterrupted power to your audio/video equipment, allowing time for an orderly shut-down and protection from damage. The M1500-UPS also ensures that your system settings remain intact, and your DVR continues to handle scheduled TV recordings.

Consistent, clean power for top-notch A/V performance
A line conditioner filters out noise to help your gear achieve peak performance. Automatic Voltage Monitoring circuitry keeps outgoing AC power within an optimal voltage range for your audio/video system. Front-panel displays let you closely monitor voltage, battery charge, and load level. And a line fault indicator alerts you to any faulty wiring within your system.

Connect and protect up to six components
The M1500-UPS has six surge-protected outlets — two of which are "critical load" outlets that take precedence over the other four outlets. Let's say you have a DLP projection TV plugged into a critical load outlet, for example. It's important to cool down the DLP's lamp to prevent damage to the bulb in the event of a sudden system shutdown. The UPS cuts off power to the four non-critical outlets, reserving battery power for the fan that cools your DLP's lamp. This UPS also features a unique learning IR function that you can program to send out shutdown or standby commands to components such as a home theater projector. (Requires infrared flashers, not included.)

Safeguard your computer, telephone, and modem
Two protected Ethernet jacks connect the UPS to your home computer network or telephone to prevent power surges from coming in over the line. An RS-232 port allows communication between the UPS and your PC. Use the included software with your laptop to program the UPS with your preferences during setup. Or, if you have a home theater PC in your system, you can keep it connected and rely on the UPS to automatically save and close your open computer files when the power goes out.

Features

Overview: The Panamax M1500-UPS-PFP is an all-in-one Uninterruptible Power Supply, Voltage Regulator, Surge Protector, and Power Conditioner which is programmable via supplied software.

  • Uninterruptible Power Supply: A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) maintains power temporarily to ride out short black-outs or brown-outs preventing lengthy restart sequences. It allows safe shut down for extended black-outs. DVR's can continue to record. Unique IR control (Patent Pending) allows ceiling projectors to cool their lamps properly to prevent damage from excessive heat before shutting down
  • Voltage Regulator: Voltage Regulation (keeping voltage within nominal operating ranges) prevents equipment lock-ups due to power sags and keeps equipment from heating up (power supplies require more current when voltage is low).
  • Surge Protector: The M1500-UPS-PFP features exclusive protect and disconnect circuitry to prevent damage to your equipment in the event of a catastrophic surge such as lightning by completely disconnecting AC power to connected equipment.
  • Power Conditioner: Superb noise filtration is combined with our patented over/under voltage protection circuitry.

Home Cinema Power Control Software (Version 1.2): The Home Cinema Power Control software is designed for use with Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. It works in conjunction with the UPS to provide full protection of home theater equipment including digital video recorders, home theater PCs, and video projectors/lamps. This program may be used temporarily during the initial system setup or used to manage your home theater personal computer (HTPC).

  • UPS Initial Setup: An installer can use a notebook computer to set the variables within the Home Cinema Power Control software. Once the setup is completed, the notebook computer can be disconnected and all the settings are stored in the UPS.
  • UPS Manager: The UPS can provide continued power to the HTPC to maintain recording capabilities if it is being used as digital video recorder. It is also capable of saving open documents and shutting down the HTPC during extended power failures. This requires a permanent RS232 connection to the HTPC and having the Home Cinema Power Control software running in the background on the HTPC.
  • UPS Schedule: There is also a Scheduled feature that can automatically save and close open files and then shutdown the computer and UPS at a user specified date and time as well a re-start the computer at a user specified date and time. Use of this feature is optional and is not required for the power failure shutdown to occur.

Note: The UPS will provide surge suppression, automatic voltage regulation and battery backup without this software. Automatic shutdown of an HTPC requires the used of this software.

Critical Load Function: Using the supplied software, you can set the unit's Critical Load Function. This function sets the battery capacity level at the point where the no-critical load outlets are turned off and all remaining battery power is reserved for equipment plugged into the two critical load outlets. This value is stored internally by the UPS and is not dependent on having the software running on a computer.

Learning IR Control: The learning IR function lets you program the UPS to send standby or shut-down commands to components such as a DLP ceiling projector. If the power fails, the DLP projector's lamps are turned off while the UPS continues providing battery power to the projector's cooling fan. Proper shutdown is ensured and expensive lamps are protected from damage. The UPS can learn two IR commands. The learned commands will be transmitted on both output jacks so you have ability to control two different pieces of equipment or use a two-step macro for one component.

Front Panel Display: The M1500-UPS-PFP features a front-panel LCD display which indicates the following.

  • Power On Indicator: This LED illuminates when the utility condition is normal and the UPS outlets are providing clean and protected power.
  • Battery Level Indicator: This is a visual indication of the battery charge. If battery capacity is under 25%, no indicator LED will illuminate and UPS starts beeping (if the audible alarm is enabled)
  • Battery Mode Indicator: This illuminates during utility failure or an unsafe voltage condition, indicating that the battery is supplying power to the connected equipment.
  • AVR Indicator: This indicates that the UPS is operating in automatic voltage regulation (AVR) mode. When the led is illuminated continuously, it indicates an input over-voltage and the AUPS unit reduces the voltage to the normal operating range. When the led is flashing, it indicates that the input line voltage is low and that the UPS is increasing input voltage to the normal range.
  • Line Fault Indicator: This LED will illuminate to warn the user that a wiring problem such as a bad/missing ground or reversed wiring exists within the AC receptacle. If illuminated, disconnect all equipment and contact an electrician to insure outlet is properly wired.
  • Unsafe Voltage Indicator: This LED will illuminate to inform the user that an unsafe line voltage is present and that UPS has switched to battery power. This could be either an over-voltage or under-voltage.
  • Load Level Indicator: This is a visual indication of the UPS load. The 1st arrow will illuminate when the load is above 25%, the 2nd when above 50%, and the 3rd when above 75%. The 4th arrow will flash when load is between 85% and 100%.

Rear Panel Connections: All of the M1500-UPS-PFP's connections are found on the unit's rear-panel.

  • Non-Critical Load Outlets: Four battery powered, surge protected and AVR outlets for connected equipment insures temporary uninterrupted operation of connected equipment during a power failure.
  • Critical Load Outlets: Two battery powered, surged protected and AVR outlets for critical-load equipment insures temporary uninterrupted operation of connected equipment during a power failure.
  • Circuit Breakers: Resetable circuit breakers provide optimal overload protection
  • AC Power Cord Receptacle: 3-plug AC port for supplied 6' 3-Prong AC power cord.
  • RS232 Serial Communication Port: The serial port allows connection and communication between the UPS and a HTPC (Home Theater Personal Computer) or home automation system. If used temporarily during setup (with the included software), it allows the installer to program a number of variable including the Critical Load Battery Threshold. The unit comes with one 6' DB 9-Pin cable.
  • IR Output Jacks: Two standard 3.5mm mono minijack ports for connection to an IR flasher (sold separately).
  • RJ11/RJ45 Jacks: The RJ11/RJ45 input and output jacks protect standard telephone line, modem or network cable. The unit comes supplied with one 6' telephone cord with RJ-11 jacks.
