Our take on the Alpine CDA-105

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Simply serious sound

Alpine built the CDA-105 as a no-nonsense music machine that will serve as your control center for even the most sophisticated audio system.

Alpine CDA-105

Play your favorite CDs, or load up a disc with your favorite MP3, WMA, and AAC files. Pack a USB flash drive to the brim for even more options. Whatever your source, Alpine's digital-to-audio converter and impressive internal amplifier will do justice to your favorite driving music.

Adding on to your system

You'll get full control of your iPod® — even your iPhone® — through the CDA-105's USB slot. No adapter is necessary, but Alpine includes an iPod cable so you can leave your other cable at home. The CDA-105 offers three sets of preamp outputs for connecting amps and subs. You can add Alpine's Bluetooth® adapter for safer hands-free calling and audio streaming, or tap into satellite radio's wealth of entertainment with an optional tuner.

For especially big music libraries, Alpine's Percentage Search function uses the preset buttons for quick jumps to specific parts of the list (Preset 1: 0% to 16%, Preset 2: 17% to 32%, Preset 3: 33% to 49%, Preset 4: 50% to 66%, Preset 5: 67% to 82%, Preset 6: 83% to 100% of the song library). Since you can just jump to a segment of your library with a touch of a button, you'll save yourself from scrolling through each song one by one.

Add an HD Radio™ tuner for improved AM/FM sound quality — FM sounds almost like a CD, while AM sounds like traditional FM. And while your iPod's connected, you can even tag songs you hear on HD Radio stations for downloading later in iTunes®. You'll be reminded of the songs you tagged the next time you sync your iPod with your computer.

Fine-tune your sound with IMPRINT

If you're into sound quality, Alpine's optional IMPRINT™ sound processor and KTX-100 tuning kit can transform your car into the perfect listening space. It uses a microphone to analyze the acoustics in your vehicle, then works with the CDA-105's MultEQ feature to adjust the receiver's output for the best possible audio performance. IMPRINT

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check Hands-on Research for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Alpine stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Alpine, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Display Features

Detachable Face: The unit features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The CD player comes supplied with a face-case to protect the detachable face when you have it off the chassis.

Display Contrast: You can adjust the head unit's display contrast for better visibility from -5 to +3.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead; when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Audio Section

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

  • CEA-2006 Power Rating: 18 watts x 4-channel
  • Max Power Output: 50 watts x 4-channel

Sound: The Sound Setting functions provide control over your system, so you can tailor the sound to your personal tastes:

  • Bass Control:
    • Bass Center Frequency: 60Hz, 80Hz (default), 100Hz, or 200Hz
    • Bass Band Width: 1 (narrow) to 4 (wide)
    • Bass Level: -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
  • Treble Control:
    • Treble Center Frequency: 10kHz (default), 12.5kHz, 15kHz, or 17.5kHz
    • Treble Level: -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
  • High Pass Filter (HPF): the speaker level and front line level outputs have a selectable crossover (HPF); off (default), 60Hz, 80Hz, or 100Hz
  • Loudness: Loudness introduces a special low and high frequency emphasis at low listening levels to compensate for the ear's decreased sensitivity to bass and treble sound at low volume

Subwoofer Pre-out: In addition to the front and rear preamp outputs, the CDA-105 has a dedicated subwoofer output with a variable level of 0 to +15. When the subwoofer is on, you can select either System1 or System2 for the desired subwoofer effect.

  • Subwoofer System 1: subwoofer level changes according to the main volume setting
  • Subwoofer System 2: subwoofer level change is different from the main volume setting; even at low volume settings, the subwoofer is still audible

Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is powering all the speakers in the system, you can turn the internal amp off, which will improve the sound quality.

Audio Mute: Activating the Audio Mute function will instantly lower the volume level by 20 dB.

Interrupt Feature: When a device having the interrupt feature (such as a cellular telephone) is connected to the receiver, the audio signal will be automatically muted whenever the interrupt signal is received from the device. The supplied wiring harness contains a pink/black Interrupt lead that needs to be connected to the device's interrupt signal connection.

Sound Processing (with optional PXA-H100)

Imprint: With the addition of the optional PXA-H100 Imprint box (500PXAH100, sold separately) and KTX-H100 tuning kit (500KTXH100, sold separately) a car's inherent acoustic shortcomings can be overcome with the MultEQ feature. Imprint also gives you much more sound adjustment flexibility as detailed below.

MultEQ: MultEQ, developed by Audyssey Labs, automatically optimizes the audio for the listening environment inside your vehicle. The Imprint kit includes the hardware, software, and microphone necessary to measure multiple positions in the car and capture frequency and time domain information from the vehicle's actual acoustical environment. Once the car's speaker location delays are measured, along with the frequency peaks and dips caused by the absorptive and reflective materials in the interior, MultEQ creates a set of equalization filters to correct the frequency response and time domain problems for each speaker in the vehicle. It also removes sound distortion caused by the specific acoustical problems in the vehicle by applying unique FIR filters, using more than 500 points along the frequency spectrum per channel. This optimizes the sound reproduction to the specific vehicle listening environment with much greater precision than can be achieved using typical graphic or parametric equalization. The result is a more accurate soundstage and smoother, more natural sound optimized to match your vehicle.

Equalizer: 10 typical equalizer settings are preset at the factory for a variety of musical source material. You can select from - Flat, Pops, Rock, News, Jazz & Blues, Electrical Dance, Hip Hop & Rap, Easy Listening, Country, and Classical. The head unit will also save six custom EQ curves you create by adjusting the units built-in EQ. Choose the parametric or graphic EQ:

  • 5- Band Parametric EQ: The built-in Parametric EQ allows you to adjust the following 5 frequency bands in 1/3 octave steps from -6 to +6 dB at a bandwidth Q factor of 1, 1.5, or 3:
    • Band 1: 20 Hz to 80 Hz
    • Band 2: 50 Hz to 200 Hz
    • Band 3: 125 Hz to 3.2 kHz
    • Band 4: 315 Hz to 8 kHz
    • Band 5: 800 Hz to 20 kHz
  • 7-Band Graphic EQ: The built-in Graphic EQ allows you to adjust the following 7 frequencies from -6 to +6 dB:
    • Band 1: 63 Hz
    • Band 2: 150 Hz
    • Band 3: 400 Hz
    • Band 4: 1 kHz
    • Band 5: 2.5 kHz
    • Band 6: 6.3 kHz
    • Band 7: 17.5 kHz

Crossover: The active crossover can be used as a 2.2 channel (3-way; low-pass subwoofer, band-pass midrange, high-pass tweeter) or a 4.2 channel (2-way; high-pass front and rear, low-pass subwoofer). A crossover limits the frequencies delivered to a given speaker, so you send only the frequencies for which the speaker is well suited. The crossover adjusts the high pass filter or low pass filter of each band along with the slope and output level. You can adjust the following crossover settings:

  • 4.2 Channel:
    • High Pass Filter: the front and rear outputs are individually adjustable; crossover from 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
    • Low Pass Filter: the subwoofer output can be stereo or mono; crossover from 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
  • 2.2 Channel:
    • Tweeter/High Pass Filter: crossover from 1 kHz to 20 kHz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of 6, 12, 18, or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
    • Midrange/Band Pass Filter: a band pass has both high pass and low pass filters; HPF 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct; LPF from 20 Hz to 20 kHz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
    • Subwoofer/Low Pass Filter: the subwoofer output can be stereo or mono; crossover from 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB

Time Correction: The time correction feature delays the audio signal to the speakers closer to the listener. This effectively creates a perception of increased distance for those speakers. Time Correction allows the listener to be placed at an equal distance from all speakers for optimum staging. You can adjust the distance of each speaker and subwoofer (6-channel) to the listener from 0 to 132.7 inches.

Media Xpander: The MX (Media Xpander) function makes vocals or instruments sound distinct by restoring sound quality typically lost during recording or transmission; this function helps restore audio information that becomes obscured when audio is compressed. The MX function can be applied to all sources, except AM radio. There are three settings and each source can have its own setting.

Overall great, one flaw

Written By ChrisH, Phoenix, AZ on Tuesday, October 04, 2011

I've used this HU for about 6 months. Overall, It's one of the best HU's I have had. Controls are easy, the options are nice, display is big and has large text, and has an iPod hookup (which I use with my iPhone 4;works great). There is only one major issue I had with it. It's not easy to read in direct sunlight. There is an option to turn up the contrast, which helps, but not quite enough. Usually I can read it unless i shade over it with my hand to block the sun. At night, no problems at all. Anyways, can't complain too much because it's a great price, and I have adapters to hook up AUX and USB so it's very flexible.

Fails at media library organization

Written By SagaciousB, Austin, TX on Monday, October 03, 2011

The stereo sounds great. Its somewhat unintuitive when it comes to using the bluetooth features, but once its set up the A2DP streaming works quite well. Handsfree may be another story and people have complained about being able to hear me. I can't say its the best system for bluetooth.

I primarily bought this stereo to try to go CD-less. I was very excited about throwing a huge flash usb drive in my center console, hidden from view, throwing 16GB of music on it accessible through the head unit. Think again. This unit only supports a total of 100 folders (including subfolders!). What the heck? Are you kidding me? What kind of asinine limitation is that? Worse, it sorts your music BY MOST RECENTLY COPIED TO THE DRIVE. What? Not alphabetical? Not by artist? By when I copied it to the drive?

I'm so disappointed in this purchase. They may have a high quality amp, but that's about all Alpine got right in this system. They really better learn how to organize and navigate a large digital music library or they can kiss their company goodbye.

Alpine CDA-105

Written By Ficoy, Sunnyvale, CA on Monday, September 26, 2011

It's a great dash: looks good and sounds good, and the ability to control illumination color is a plus. The headunit has pretty much all the features you could want.

The only downside is that there is only 1 line of display.

Great Price + Features

Written By , Colorado Springs, CO on Wednesday, September 07, 2011

I bought this head unit to integrate with the Alpine KPT-445 and wanted iPod control.

Good items: 1.The iPod USB and AUX-IN connections are in the back of the unit allowing the iPod to be stowed in the glove box and the AUX-IN cable to be stowed when not in use. 2.The folder structure is easy to navigate with minimal self training. 3.Plug-and-play with the KPT-445 4.iPod cable included

Items it lacks are: 1.3rd Band for the EQ (no midrange adjustment), have to spend extra $ for IMPRINT 2.iPod/iPhone access to audio controls while plugged-in (as most Apple approved products also don't allow) 3.Pandora control is not accessible when an iPhone is plugged into Apple plug (would have had to get different HU for this feature) Pandora does work if plugged in with the AUX-IN. That said, my iPhone is usually available to plug into the 1/8" AUX-IN, and the iPod stays connected in the glove box, and both can be selected independently as a source. 4.AUX-IN cable sold separately 5.Changing the color of the buttons does not change the color theme for the whole head unit.

Overall it is a great head unit for a closeout price. Get one while they are still available!

Very Happy

Written By MarkM, Jamestown NY on Sunday, September 04, 2011

I've only had the receiver in for a couple of days and I'm real happy with it. I've never replaced a car stereo by myself before and decided to give it a go. It was actually quite easy. The free mounting equipment and wire harness worked perfect. I only wish the receiver had a USB port in the front instead of having a wire hanging out from under the dash. I'll just find a way to mount a USB recepticle into the dash. Other than that it works well and sounds great and I highly recommend this product.

I have been wanting to upgrade my stock stereo system in my 90 Mustang for a while. Installed this head unit with the KTP455 power pack and WOW! What a difference. Crisp and Clear with much more detail than the stock unit. This really woke up the stock speakers. Can't wait till my polk speakers arrive! The alpine is easy to navigate with the ipod. I have used several different head units and would say this tops the list. Clarion is a close second.

Alpine CDA-105

This is a great product and installation was a snap! I put it in a 1996 Miata without a problem. USB/Ipod connector is great. I can use inexpensive flash drives, rather than my Ipod touch to enjoy my music on the road!

Great Stereo for my G35

Written By Dave, Addison, IL on Thursday, August 25, 2011

I bought this stereo to replace my stock stereo in my Infiniti G35. I had the dreaded radio/heater problem that is so common with this car. I was looking for a stereo that had USB input, great sound, good radio reception & affordable. This unit has it all! I love it. Crutchfield offers 50% off the metra kit with purchase! I'm real happy with the stereo & crutchfield's price & support!

Sounds great!

Written By Gbo, Ohio on Monday, August 22, 2011

Sounds great, great price, but the display leaves a lot to be desired. I would of given it a 5, but the diplay is hard to read and the red back-lighting looks horrible. I will keep it just becasue the car I installed it in is not a daily driver and is only driven in good weather, on the weekends.

Awesome Stereo

Written By Jake, Dayton, OH on Saturday, August 20, 2011

just installed this stereo today in my 98 Nissan Maxima. the instructions from Crutchfield for some parts of the install were a little vague and generic, which led to some issues with the fit of the stereo and tray compartment underneath, but it wasn't too hard to work out. as far as the stereo itself, the display looks great, the controls are easy to use with my iPod, and it sounded 10 times better even with my stock speakers still in. once i put kicker ds65 speakers in both the front and rear it sounded incredible. i would definitely recommend this stereo for anyone wanting to use their iPod in the car... although note that if you didn't realize it, the usb cable doesn't connect to the front of the receiver, so you have to drill a hole in the tray underneath if you don't want to run it to the glovebox....wasn't a big deal, though. overall, the stereo is great and gets 5 stars but the installation instruction from Crutchfield wasn't all it could have been
