Loaded with features and ready to roll

If you're in the hunt for a do-it-all car stereo, look no further than Alpine's CDE-HD149BT CD receiver. It packs a serious sonic punch and you'll also get features like an HD Radio® tuner, built-in Bluetooth®, and Pandora® Internet radio control, too. Alpine's user-friendly controls round out the package, with an innovative new smartphone-based app for tuning your system.

Sound control, just a swipe away

Alpine puts pro-level audio tuning in the palm of your hand with the Alpine TuneIt App, an award-winning smartphone app designed exclusively for select Alpine receivers. Download the free app onto your iPhone® or Android™ smartphone, and you can create a user profile with information specific to you, your vehicle, and your Alpine system. Then it's a simple matter to import sound settings for your car from 3,000 options in Alpine's database, or use the app to adjust the receiver's time correction feature, 9-band parametric equalizer, frequency filters, and Media Xpander yourself. Save up to 100 different sound settings — whatever you want to match your music or taste. Alpine TuneIt App even lets you create a profile on Facebook so you can share settings with other users.

Bluetooth® for hands-free calling and audio streaming

If you don't have Bluetooth in your car, you'll love the capabilities the CDE-HD149BT offers. No more fumbling for your phone when you get a call — pair your Bluetooth equipped phone with the receiver and you'll talk hands-free when you get a call. And since the receiver imports your phonebook, outgoing calls are easy to place too. If you store music or stream audio programming on your smartphone, you'll be able to listen over your car's audio system without any wires — simply select Bluetooth Audio as your source and tap into all the content you enjoy.

Built-in HD Radio™ with iTunes® tagging

HD Radio

Alpine's HD Radio tuner lets you tune in digital AM/FM broadcasts, significantly pumping up the sound quality. Participating FM stations sound about as good as a CD, while AM stations offer enhanced reception similar to traditional FM. Plus, when you connect your iPod® and tune into an HD Radio station, you can "tag" songs you like for later purchase from the iTunes® store.

Pandora® in your car

Your smartphone and the free Pandora app are the key to enjoying the variety of musical options available on Pandora. Android and BlackBerry® users get full control through the Bluetooth connection, while iPhone lovers just plug in through the USB port. You can change stations, skip tracks, and rate songs just like you do online.

HD Radio: With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. HD Radio lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-like sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free.

    • Station Text: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. The built-in HD Radio tuner displays song title, artist and station information on the display of the Alpine CDE-HD149BT.
    • Multicasting: Multicasting is the ability to broadcast multiple program streams over a single AM/FM frequency. this increases the amount and diversity of content choices. A maximum of eight multicast station channels (HD1-HD8) can be selected on this unit.
    • Preset Tuning: The built-in tuner provides 12 FM and 6 AM preset stations. Stations can be preset manually or automatically. Sub-program services of multicast stations are not included in the automatic memory search.
    • Search Functions: The Alpine CDE-HD149BT offers various search functions to help you find the analog or digital AM/FM stations you are looking for. You can search for only digital AM/FM stations (Digital mode), or both analog & digital AM/FM stations (Hybrid mode). Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. Distance seek tuning allows both strong and weak stations to be tuned. You can even search for a radio station by its frequency, using the head unit's rotary encoder.
    • Listening Modes: The head unit provides four reception methods in order to receive Digital & Analog AM/FM signals according to your own preference and signal strength. Choose from Hybrid (receives both digital and analog stations; if the digital signal is weak, this mode will switch to receive the analog radio signal automatically), Digital (receives only digital radio signals even when the digital signal is weak), Digital MC (receives the digital radio signal while listening to a sub-program service of a multicast station), or Analog (only receives the analog radio signal, even when the digital signal is strong).
    • Live Mode: While receiving a live AM/FM broadcast, you can select an optimized receiving method according to your own preference and the signal strength. Choose from Analog (while receiving a live broadcast this unit will only receive the analog radio signal even when the digital signal can be received), Digital (while receiving a live broadcast this unit will keep receiving the digital radio signal even when the digital signal is week), or Listen (while receiving a live broadcast this unit will use one of the Listening Modes - Hybrid/Digital/Digital MC/Analog).
    • FM Tone Quality: You can set your preferred tonal quality, when listening to FM analog radio stations. You can choose between HiFi (high-quality sound), Normal (standard setting), or Stable (noise control).
    • iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from the HD Radio broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store. You can "tag" up to 50 songs. Your iPod/iPhone must have at least 50MB of free space to "tag" and transfer songs. iTunes 7.4 or later is required to purchase "tagged" songs.
Note: More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to www.hdradio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

Your iPhone or Android smartphone will also need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs. The unit also supports playback of MP3/WMA/AAC music files loaded onto CD-R/RW discs.

Rear-Panel USB Port: The Alpine CDE-HD149BT features a rear-panel USB (type-A) port attached to the rear-chassis by a 9" cable, and comes with a 5' USB extension cable. The USB port enables connection of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) device; such as select portable digital audio players or USB thumbdrives. The USB port supports audio playback and control of MP3/WMA/AAC audio files stored on these portable USB mass-storage class devices. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (max. 1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

Note: The unit's USB port does not support connection of an Android OS device. You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track. For discs and USB devices without CD Text or ID3/WMA tags searches are made using the track numbers associated with each song.

Playback Modes: The Alpine CDE-HD149BT offers Repeat and Random playback modes.

    • Repeat: Repeat Play (repeats playback of current track/file), Folder Repeat (repeats only files in current folder).

    Audio Section

24-Bit D/A Converter: The Alpine CDE-HD149BT uses a 24-bit D/A converter for superb sound quality and playback of your music.

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

    • CEA-2006 Power Rating: 18 watts x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Max Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels
Note: Add the KTP-445A (500KTP445A, sold separately) Head Unit Power Pack to deliver 45 watts x 4-channel RMS of power. The KTP-445A is compact enough to install behind the Alpine CD receiver. It plugs in-line with the head unit's wiring harness, so you don't even need additional wires.

6ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The CDE-HD149BT has three sets of 4-Volt RCA pre-outs (Front/Rear/Sub) for connection of external amplifiers. The unit's front & rear preamp output can be faded, while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Note: When an external amplifier is connected sound quality can be improved by stopping the power supply of the built-in amplifier.

Subwoofer Control: When the non-fading subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can adjust the subwoofer's volume, low-pass filter, & phase.

    • Volume: There are two volume (system) modes for the unit's subwoofer output. System 1 (subwoofer level changes according to the main volume setting) or System 2 ( subwoofer level change is different from the main volume setting (0-15); even at low volume settings, the subwoofer is still audible.
    • Low Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer output low-pass filter can be set to 20Hz, 25Hz, 31.5Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, 160Hz, 200Hz, or Off (through). The slope of the low pass filter can be set to 6, 12, 18, or 24 dB/oct.
    • Subwoofer Phase: The subwoofer output phase can be set to Normal (0°) or Reverse (180°).

High Pass Filter (for Front & Rear): The Alpine head unit is equipped with a high-pass filter for its speaker-level output and front-channel preamp output (when activated). You can set the unit's high-pass filter to 20Hz, 25Hz, 31.5Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, 160Hz, 200Hz, or Off (through). The slope of the high pass filter can be set to 6, 12, 18, or 24 dB/oct.

Preset/9-Band EQ: You can select from 11 different EQ presets to get the best sound from all your sources. You can choose from Flat, Pops, Rock, News, Jazz, Electric Dance, Hip-Hop, Easy Listening, Country, Classical, or User. Using the head unit's 9-Band EQ (in User mode), you can modify the EQ settings to create a response curve more appealing to your personal taste.

    Band Frequency Q-Width Level
    1 20 Hz - 100 Hz 3.0, 4.0. 5.0 -7 to +7 dB
    2 63 Hz - 315 Hz
    3 125 Hz - 500 Hz
    4 250 Hz - 1 kHz
    5 500 Hz - 2 kHz
    6 1 kHz - 4 kHz
    7 2 kHz- 7.2 kHz
    8 5.8 kHz - 12 kHz
    9 9 kHz - 20 kHz
Note: The settings of the 9-Band EQ, Time Correction, and X-over can be stored in the preset memory (1-6).

Audio Enhancements: The CDE-HD149BT offers the following audio adjustments to enhance your in-car listening experience.

    • Media Xpander: Alpine's exclusive Media Xpander is engineered to bring out the musical details lost in compressed media, and it is adjustable per source to get the most out of your digital audio media. The Media Expander makes vocals or instruments sound distinct regardless of the music source. You can customize the Media Xpander to suit your personal taste by adjusting the level (0-8) for Bass, Mids, and Highs. The FM radio, CD, USB, iPod, Pandora, Bluetooth, and Aux will be able to reproduce the music more clearly even in vehicles with a lot of road noise.
    • Time Correction: This unit is able to delay the audio signal to the speakers closest to the listener with its built-in Time Correction feature. This effectively creates a perception of increased distance for those speakers. Time Correction allows the listener to be placed at an equal distance between the left and right speakers for optimum staging. You can adjust the distance (0-132.7") of each speaker and subwoofer to the listener.
    • Spatial: This feature allows you to change the soundstage of your music in the vehicle. You can select from three modes.
      • Front Wide: Creates the effect of widening the front sound field by delaying the sound of the front speakers.
      • Rear Wide: Creates the effect of making the front sound image clear and far by delaying the sound of the rear speakers.
      • Off: No effect is applied (default)
    • Source Volume Level: The output level of each source (Tuner, Disc, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, Pandora, Aux) is individually adjustable from -14 to + 14 dB.

Alpine's TuneIt App: The Alpine TuneIt app is an easy-to-use sound-tuning app that also offers Facebook notifications. Download this free app (from Apple's App Store or GooglePlay) onto your Apple iPhone (iOS 6.0+ ) or Android smartphone (2.2+) and create a user profile about your vehicle and sound system. Your iPhone must be connected to the CDE-HD149BT via the appropriate Alpine iPod connector cable (500KCU445I/500KCU471I sold separately) or the Dock-/Lightning-cable that came with your iPhone. Your Android smartphone must support A2DP/AVRCP/SPP Bluetooth profiles and be paired with the Alpine receiver. Your iPhone or Android smartphone will also need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi.

    • Sound Tuning: The Alpine TuneIt app turns your iPhone or Android smartphone into a sound tuning interface for the CDE-HD149BT. Follow the simple graphical instructions on your phone to adjust sound settings for your specific vehicle or choose from pre-made settings in the database. Settings that can be adjusted include Parametric EQ, Bass Engine SQ, Crossover, and Media Xpander. As you change settings on your smartphone, you will hear the results, so you can customize the sound to exactly how you want it. You can make and save up to 100 different sound settings in your account, which is helpful if you want various settings to use for specific types of music. After tuning your system, upload your settings to the Alpine Cloud Server to share them with other Alpine fans. You can also check out other user's settings and rate them. The more active you are, the higher your profile status progresses within the app.
    • Facebook Notifications: The Alpine TuneIt app also keeps you in touch with your Facebook friends. When you receive a notification, you will get a visual alert on the smartphone and the head unit, plus a sound alert through your car speakers. The visual notification includes the Facebook icon and the sender's name, with the profile picture shown on the phone. You are then able to listen to the notification via TTS (Text-to-Speech) through the head unit and your vehicle's speaker. You can even "Like" the notification from the head unit's front-panel controls. In order to receive Facebook notifications on the head unit, the Alpine TuneIt app must be the active app on your smartphone.

Note: Access to the Alpine TuneIt app will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or smartphone to connect to the Internet. You will also need to turn on the GPS function of your phone.

Beep Guide: This function will give audible feedback with varying tones depending upon the button pressed. The volume of this feature can be set from 0-7.

    Display Features

Fold-Down Detachable Face: The Alpine CDE-HD149BT features a manual fold-down face-plate which is detachable to deter theft. A hard-plastic face-case is provided. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. The fold-down face requires 1.875" of space to open.

2-Line LCD: This unit is equipped with a 2-Line white-backlit LCD, so you can easily view AM/FM stations, CD-Text, and ID-3/WMA/AAC tag information.

Text Display: Text information, such as the disc name and the track name, will be displayed if playing a CD text compatible disc. It is also possible to display the folder name, the file name, and the tag information, while playing a MP3/WMA/AAC disc or USB device. This unit can scroll the disc and track names recorded on CD-Text disc, as well as the text information of MP3/WMA/AAC files, folder names, and tags. There are two Text Scroll settings.

    • Auto: The CD text information, the information of folder and file names, and the tags are scrolled automatically.
    • Manual: The display is scrolled when a disc is loaded or when a track is changed.

    Clock/Calendar Display: The CDE-HD149BT provides a clock (12hr) & calendar (mm/dd/yy) display.

Variable Color Button Illumination: The head unit lets you choose between Blue, Green, Red, or Amber button illumination. The LCD text will remain white.

Auto Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead (orange); when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Demo Mode: This unit has a demonstration feature for its display which can be turned On or Off in the menu.

    Remote Control

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).

Optional Wireless Remote: The Alpine CDE-HD149BT is wireless remote control ready. Simply add on the Alpine RUE-4202 IR remote (500RUE4202, sold separately) to make it even easier to control the head unit's functions.

Does this radio connect with the old school style connector from the radio antenna?

Depends on the vehicle. My Honda Pilot antenna connector fits right in. I also had the radio in a 1998 Mercedes and it required an adapter.

Yes it does as I remember it has a female connector on the back so it accepts the male lead from your antenna
    brett  Dec 11, 2019
    A
It's been 2 years, but I do remember having an issue with my antenna connection that turned out to be a non-issue because I was able to pull off a conversion plug at the end of my existing 2001 Rav4 antenna wire, previously used to connect to a CDA-9811, revealing a "male" antenna plug that fit perfectly into the CDE-HD149BT. The resulting antenna wire was a little shorter, but still long enough to reach the radio. I don't know if this resulting plug would be considered "new-school" or "old-school".

My girlfriend's iPhone X worked with it however I wasn't super impressed with the stereo. I've had Alpine stereos for over 15 years and it looks like Pioneer headunits work better with smart phones.

Yes it can. The usb port is located on a cable that comes out of the back of the unit which allows you to route and hide the port in the center console, glove box, or anywhere you can imagine! I routed mine to a custom port for the usb and aux right in the front of the dash. Allows for a much cleaner install, no memory stick poking out of the face plate!!

I have it installed on a rough riding miata where it's exposed to the elements and it's still alive after a year of use. If you are really concerned about exposure to things and vibration, maybe go with a marine certified deck.

Hello Shane! I can't say that this Alpine unit would be more or less durable than others for your application!?! I think it would work fine in a semi! As for sound quality you will be super happy. Great sound and ability to tune it the way you like to hear it, and without the app too. Excellent unit and well worth the higher price! Good luck! I put it in a jeep that sees mild off roading and it's held up well. Lots of dust and vibrations. The tune profiles definitely sound good as long as there is one made for your make and model. One thing though I think it got real cold one night and now there is a white line across the very bottom. Doesn't really affect anything but still annoying. Most likely a warranty issue but didn't want to go through the whole inconvenient process.

on the rear of the unit, there is a cd input type plug that the manual does not identify, can you tell me what it is please? thanks
    david  Oct 16, 2017
    1 answer
    A
There are actually 3 sets of "RCA" outputs on the rear of the unit. They are for connecting stand-alone amplifiers. One set for the front left/right speakers, one set for the rear left/right speakers, and one set for a (or a pair of) subwoofer(s). The only other plug on the rear of the unit is an 1/8" female plug for the AUX input. This AUX in is mounted on a short, (maybe 3"?) cable on the rear of the unit on the same side as the antenna input. Hope that helps.

The faceplate is absolutely removable. Only issue I had in my particular situation was that the trim kit (the free one sent with my HU) crowds the faceplate right where it attaches/detaches to the HU. I'm able to get it off and on, but I do have to be careful when detaching/attaching the faceplate. Unit is pretty awesome. You'll like it if you choose to purchase it.

Certainly worth the money. Its not the graphics that make it better its the clarity of the text. On the 148BT the font is pixelated. The 149 gives you a more clear view of all your text features like phone numbers, music listings, graphics, etc. Hope that helps!

Almost anything that supports the Bluetooth standards of a specific device can pair with that device. Keep in mind that Bluetooth is evolving and there are multiple standards and older car audio units may support an older more limited standard that that supported by a new iPhone. That said, those devices that provide an iPod adapter, I have had luck using adapter cables, even ones with a 3.5 audio jack and just jacking into the audio output of any device. Likewise, I have used Lightning adapters to use new iPhone devices with older style connectors successfully.

I've only noticed that when the phone is too far from the head unit, or if there's something between the phone and the head unit. And by "too far", I'm talking like 1.5 to 2 feet -- the phone has to be really close to maintain a good connection. Enough so that if its even in my left pocket while driving, and there's another phone in my pocket as well, the signal for music streaming might start to drop out. Moving the phone closer to the unit has cleared it up every time.

Not 100% sure as I've yet to have this issue.. the HU seems to be smart enough to pick up anything I've attached to it thus far- but when I use my phone through the USB, it reads everything out of one folder from my phone (have android). It's supposed to also read up to 8 layers of folders and I believe it should automatically alphabetize them for you as well. Two questions I guess: What kind of USB drive are you connecting & Have you tried a different thumb drive or device?

Question for android phone users: How is the sound quality while playing Pandora through the Bluetooth? Is there no other way to access Pandora other than Bluetooth? I use an HTC Desire 601, should there be any issues with playback through this model of phone? Thanks for any help.

The sound quality is great. I have played Pandora in the USB mode, but it does not sound as good. As long as your phone has Bluetooth capability, it should work fine. I would download the Alpine Tune-It App if you can.
    rich  Nov 06, 2014
    A
The sound quality streaming blue tooth to the receiver is great.. Pandora is limited by it's own quality (which is pretty bad) so I do not use that app or recommend using it with anything other than a portable pool speaker. Try Milk or IheartRadio, their codecs are better and the music selection is better as well. With Milk you can even set it to player in higher quality at the sacrifice to data usage. I also use the mini usb to connect sometimes and works well too. My only complaint is that if you do not have your phone ready for pairing (bluetooth on, in the area, etc), you have to restart the power on the receiver to get it to pair. But it is pretty infrequent that it happens. Hands down a great unit all around.

Dear Jay, I purchased the 149 last year and like it very much. To the extent that the 149 will not fit your truck may have to do with inputs and not other factors, such as DVD inputs, phone features and connections, etc. The technical folks at Crutchfield are very good about explain these kinds of application/fit subtleties; give them a holler before you get too caught up in others' minutia about their specific applications. I had a previous Alpine head unit in a 2003 Dodge Ram pickup, and it worked beautifully. Best of luck.

Thank you! I have the 149 in my 911 match with R series separates for the front and 6" R series in the rear and 2 - 8" R Series subs all matched up with the PD series 5 channel amp. I was hoping to do the same set up for the truck. Only with a 4 channel for the speakers and a single channel for 2 10" R series subs under the back bench. If we are only talking about 1/16" I think I can work that out. Thank you for the help and input!

Hi, I went ahead and checked the actual dimensions for the 148 vs. the 149. The only thing that I think will cause you problems is the difference in depth. The 148 is 6 5/16" deep and the 149 is 6 3/8" deep. I know it doesn't sound like much, but depending on the kit you use to install the radio into the dash it won't go all the way in. Personally, I thought the units looked identical in the pictures, but the 149 is just a bit deeper. I have the 149 and its a really nice unit. Hope this helps!
    joseph  Aug 04, 2014

The 149 is quite deep, and without a little modification it might stick out from your factory radio housing. I bought the 149 for my Land Rover, and I had to modify the rubber grommet that screws into the back of the unit in order to get the radio pushed far enough into the bracket behind the dash. Otherwise it poked out about 1cm.

The screen is the primary difference between the two. The motorized faceplate (which is removable) opens up when you're looking to insert a CD. I chose the 149 and do not have any regrets.

The display is the biggest difference...and price. You are better off with the 149. The display is much better. I am so glad I decided to get the 149 for that reason alone. All the other features are fairly similar. So if the display isn't a huge factor, save the $50 and get the 148. But from my personal experience, spend the extra money. I purchased an Alpine with the 148 display and it was very difficult to see. So I sent it back and I got the CDE-HD149BT and I'm glad I did.

I bought this unit over the summer and still have it in my 1995 Suburban. The display screen, having song/station/information does not change. All of the other display lights do change. You can see the blue square signature Apine brand button in the picture is blue - this changes to red, orange, and green. There are a lot of other backlit buttons and styling that all change as well. It was a bit of a letdown, as I went to the inordinate and probably over burdensome effort to change all of my dashlights to red. I'm an Alpine brand guy, and saw that at the time, the units that would do what I wanted were a little over my pricepoint or didn't have a particular feature I wanted. I'm happy with it, basically because Alpine is still a pretty solid brand and delivers on all other features when other brands and units have failed me, i.e. bluetooth, pandora functionality, iPhone 5 compatibility, etc.). There may be some others now that have everything change, I haven't done much research since. Good luck. It'd be interesting to know what you end up with - this unit is still pretty good, I might install it on my wife's car just for the bluetooth and iPhone functionality and go for something else myself. If you're looking to do what I did, change all the dash lights, let me know what you ended up with
