About the Onkyo DP-X1

Ralph Graves

For serious audiophiles

I'm not going to say the Onkyo DP-X1 perfectly reproduces sound — but it comes pretty darned close. When I auditioned this portable player I found that Onkyo's advanced electronics delivered my high-resolution audio files with finely detailed and lifelike sound. The DP-X1's compatible with high-resolution downloads from sites like HDtracks. You can play FLAC, WAV, and AIFF files — even MQA (Master Quality Authenticated), an up-and-coming high-resolution audio format that preserves the magic of the original studio recording in a format that is still small enough to stream. And the DP-X1 has both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi built in, so you can enjoy optimal sound from all your digital music and internet music services, too.

Dual DACs and dual amps for uncompromising digital sound quality

The DP-X1 has two high-performance ESS Sabre digital-to-analog converters (DACs), capable of decoding sampling rates up to 24-bit/384kHz. Uniquely, this player also features dual ESS Sabre 9601K amps and dual headphone outputs: an unbalanced output for standard headphones, and a balanced output for high-performance 'phones. The DP-X1 actually offers two types of balanced output modes: one that provides greater stability, a cleaner signal, and greater spatial dimensionality, and another with increased power output.

You'll enjoy spacious, clear sound with well-defined bass whether you're using high-performance headphones or a pair of entry-level models. Even compressed formats like MP3 will sound better through the DP-X1's processors.

Touchscreen convenience and ultra-precise EQ control

The player's 4.7" color touchscreen is simple to navigate. And it displays artist and title info as well as album artwork. An advanced built-in equalizer lets you adjust up to 16,384 discrete bands so you can get your music to sound exactly the way you want it. And it can store up to 1,000 EQ profiles, so you don't have to put up with one-size-fits-all settings.

Physical buttons provide basic controls without turning on the screen

Basic control buttons along the side of the player let you operate the DP-X1 without having to turn on the screen, which can help save power. An analog volume wheel lets you make minute adjustments to the volume level. The beveled inset let you operate the volume wheel even when the player is resting flat on a surface.

Wi-Fi for more music

Built-in Wi-Fi lets the player wirelessly connect to the Internet, so you can access a world of music from services like Spotify® or Pandora®. The DP-X1 is also compatible with higher-resolution audio services, such as TIDAL, and Onkyo Music, and can play their music at full resolution.

Stream with Bluetooth

The DP-X1 also has built-in Bluetooth with high-performance aptX® audio coding, which lets it stream to compatible wireless speakers and headphones at near-CD quality. This player's a great choice if you have a high-performance wireless powered speaker, such as an Audioengine B2 or a MartinLogan Crescendowireless home speaker.

Expandable memory

The DP-X1 comes with 32GB of internal memory, but that's just the start. It also has dual microSDHC cardslots that can each accept a 200GB card. That gives you a maximum of 432GB of memory space. And of course, you can load more tunes on extra cards and bring them along for a virtually unlimited amount of digital music files.

More details on the Onkyo DP-X1

Product Research

Features

High-Quality Components: The Onkyo DP-X1 hi-res portable digital audio player delivers exceptional sound quality thanks to its dual ESS Sabre DACs & amps, symmetrical twin DAC & circuit design, noise isolating circuitry, and closed loop configuration. Your digital music library will sound the way the artist intended.

  • Dual ESS Sabre DACs & Amps: Two ESS Technology Sabre ES9018K2M 32-bit/192kHz DACs and two Sabre 9601K amps allow for extraordinary power and control from a portable device. The double ESS Sabre ES9018K2M DACs and double ESS Sabre 9601K amps make balanced output possible via a 2.5mm output.
  • Symmetrical Twin DAC & Circuit Design: Optimal component placement of the twin DACs and amps for symmetric circuit design (short, equal distance) yields greater control over balanced signals.
  • Noise Isolating Circuit Design: Similar to the build used in audio receivers, the DAC & amp board is separated from the CPU board to minimize noise and maximize performance. Within the DAC & amp board, the audio circuitry and switching power are also separated to reduce noise.
  • Closed Loop Design: The DACs & amps have their own capacitors to provide a clean audio signal with closed loop design that improves audio signal quality for all audio formats.

Two Types Of Balanced Drives (BTL & ACG): Balanced output via the 2.5mm 4-pole jack supports the more standard balanced (BTL) drive as well as the more esoteric Active Control Ground (ACG) drive. ACG drive is a different form of balanced drive where the amp's cold side actively drives to create an ideally stable GND. Power gains and increased sound separation increase stability for a clean signal and greater sound clarity, especially compared to unbalanced drive.

  • BTL (Balanced): The BTL drive supplies increased power. Power gains and increased sound separation associated with balanced output are repurposed to create increased stability for a clean signal and greater sound clarity, especially compared to unbalanced drive.
  • ACG (Active Control Ground): The ACG drive gives greater stability with increased S/N ratio, greater spatial dimensionality, and clean sound; plus greater delineation for lower frequencies in hi-res audio; and overall robust sound.

Android OS & Google Play: The Onkyo DP-X1 utilizes a super flexible and intuitive Android (5.1.1) operating system & user interface, plus a fast quad-core 2.2GHz CPU and 2GB RAM with support for powerful digital signal processing (DSP) and the latest Android compatible applications. And because the DP-X1 is based on the Android platform, it also supports the Google Play Store. From The Google Play Store you have access to many apps like Tidal, Spotify, & Pandora for almost endless music streaming and downloading resources.

Touchscreen & Physical Buttons: The Onkyo DP-X1 features a 4.7" (1280 x 720) capacitive touchscreen display for control, song/artist info, and album art. The capacitive touchscreen display allows for intuitive use of flicks, taps and scrolling gestures that smartphone users are already accustomed to. All touchscreen icons, physical buttons and knobs are positioned with one handed operation in mind. Playback control in the music player supports flick gestures for track advancing, and tapping the progress circle allows for direct control of track positioning. Physical buttons offer quick music control with no need to turn on the touchscreen display.

Built-In & External Storage: With 32GB of internal storage and dual microSD card slots, storage can be expanded to 432GB. Each microSD card slot will support SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards up to 200GB. No microSD/SDHC/SDXC memory card is included (all sold separately).

Hi-Res Audio: The Onkyo DP-X1 was designed to support many audio formats, including compressed, lossless, and hi-res audio. Maxing out at 11.2MHz DSD support, the DP-X1 also supports up to 384kHz/24-bit audio, with support for WAV, FLAC, ALAC, & AIFF.

  • Supported Audio Formats: DSD (DSF/DSDIFF), FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, Ogg-Vorbis, MP3, AAC, & MQA (via free update)
  • Sampling Frequencies & Bit-Rates: 44.1/48/88.2/96/176.4/192/352.8/384 kHz (16 bit/24/32-bit), 2.8/5.6/11.2 MHz (1-bit)

MQA Compatible: MQA is not typical hi-res, a high bit-rate or high sample rate audio. It is a completely new and different way of capturing, delivering and reproducing audio performances, and it preserves the magic of the original studio recording in a format that is still small enough to stream

Note: Support for MQA format comes mid-2016 via a free update.

Upsampling & Conversion: The Onkyo DP-X1 has the ability to upsample & upconvert your digital music library to make it sound even better through its microUSB-B/OTG digital output (not analog output).

  • Hi-Res Upsampling: The DP-X1 upsamples 44.1k, 48k, 88.2k, 96k, 176.4k, and 192k music files up to 352.8/384kHz through its microUSB-B/OTG digital output (not analog output). Enjoy all your digital music content upsampled to Hi-Res audio quality.
  • DSD Conversion: Turn on "Real-Time DSD Conversion" and the DP-X1 converts music files such as MP3, WAV, and FLAC into DSD-quality audio through its microUSB-B/OTG digital output (not analog output). Use of oversampling and pushing bit quantization outside the audible spectrum allows for very clear audio signals. 44.1k, 48k, 88.2k, 96k, 176.4k, 192k, 352.8k, and 384k music files can be converted to DSD 2.8/5.6Mhz.

X-DAP Link: Manage and transfer your non-DRM protected music on your Windows or Mac computer to the Onkyo DP-X1's built-in memory or insert microSD card (not included) using X-DAP Link. The DP-X1 will connect to your computer via the included microUSB-to-USB cable. X-DAP Link searches your music libraries, including music purchased from other services, and transfers the song and related metadata to the selected storage location on the DP-X1.

Operating System Requirements
Windows 7 (32-bit/64-bit), 8 (32-bit/64-bit), 10 (32-bit/64-bit)
Mac OSX Yosemite (10.10), El Capitan (10.11)

Onkyo Music: The OnkyoMusic download service offers the latest music releases and remastered albums in hi-res for beyond-CD quality audio. Install the OnkyoMusic app and there is no need to sync with a home computer. Music can be purchased and downloaded directly from the app within the DP-X1 portable digital audio player.

Fine Tuning Controls: The Onkyo DP-X1 provides a variety of audio controls to fine tune your music for the ultimate listening experience.

  • High Precision EQ: With up to 16,384 discrete bands to select from and the ability to save up to 1,000 EQ profiles, the linear-phase finite impulse response (FIR) equalizer offers high definition equalization with zero loss in audio quality.
  • Sound Presets: Experience sound presets created by professional musicians.
  • Digital Filters: By modifying the filter characteristics of the built-in digital converter you can modify the audio sound quality for output to headphones. Sharp, Slow, & Short digital filters adjust sound characteristics on the fly. The Sharp mode improves linear startup of sound, bringing the sound forward. The Slow mode improves response, particularly for stringed instruments, allowing for softer resonance and natural sound. The Short mode keeps the sound characteristic neutral.
  • Lock Range: You can improve sound quality by adjusting the lock range of the audio input signal's jitter (modulation). Adjust the 7-position lock range to limit jitter noise, improving S/N ratio. Narrowing the lock range will dampen jitter noise's effect on sound.
  • Stand Alone Mode: In Stand Alone Mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the touchscreen display, which are sources that can create digital noise, are turned off. During Stand Alone Mode, use the physical volume knob and playback buttons to control your music.

Wired & Wireless Connectivity: With its 2.5mm/4-pole balanced output, 3.5mm/3-pole headphone jack, micro USB-B/OTG digital output, and wireless playback options, the DP-X1 offers plenty of ways to enjoy music.

  • Balanced & Unbalanced Analog Outputs: The Onkyo DP-X1 is fitted with a 2.5mm/4-pole balanced output (32-600Ω) and 3.5mm/3-pole headphone jack (16-300Ω) for connecting a set of headphones or external audio equipment.
  • microUSB-B/OTG Digital Port: The DP-X1's microUSB port lets you connect a headphone amplifier or D/A converter, that has a USB connector. You will need a USB OTG cable (sold separately) to connect to this unit. Make sure you have the correct type of USB cable for the USB port of the device you are connecting to the OTG cable. If it is a microUSB port, you can use the USB cable included with this unit.
  • WiFi & WiFi Direct: The DP-X1 features built-in WiFi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac), plus WiFi Direct (via free update) that enables the device to connect to your home's network and the internet in order to access Google Play, plus stream audio wirelessly to network audio speaker systems.
  • Bluetooth w/ aptX: You can listen to music wirelessly by using Bluetooth enabled devices, such as headphones or speakers. The coverage area is about 33'. This unit also supports aptX, so you can enjoy higher quality wireless sound by connecting headphones and wireless speakers that support aptX.

Rechargeable Battery: The Onkyo DP-X1 hi-res portable digital audio player's built-in rechargeable battery (1630mAh/3.8V) delivers approximately 16 hours of playback time, so you can carry an expansive library of hi-res audio and listen for extended periods of time. The approximate 16 hours of playback time is based on 96kHz/24-bit unbalanced output. The battery can be recharged via a free USB port on your computer/laptop or a USB/AC power adapter (sold separately).

Firmware Updates: You can update the software on this unit to the latest version. A message is displayed on the unit's touchscreen when an update file is released for the software. Simply tap the message and follow the on-screen instructions to update.

Back Up: You can back up the device's apps and settings to a Google server.

Yes. Use the headphone output. The player has a "line out" setting that sets it for maximum output for this purpose. Since it has wireless I use it to stream Tidal with a decent minijack to RCA cable (e.g. Audioquest) and it sounds much better than using an ordinary MP3 player or phone.
