About the USA Spec iPod® Interface for GM

Zak Billmeier
You can take it with you. Just because you've got a factory radio in your General Motors car, doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod or iPhone® (and the hours and hours of music it contains) at home. Just install USA Spec's iPod interface — it not only allows you to listen to all your favorite tunes through your car's speakers, it even lets you control song and playlist selections right from your radio. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more.

Just mount the compact interface box in a hidden location in your vehicle, and connect the adapter cable to rear of your compatible 2000-up GM factory radio — you won't have to disconnect your CD changer or satellite radio. Plug your iPod into the interface, and you can control volume, source, song selection, and up to five different playlists right from the radio or with your steering wheel audio controls. Or you can switch to "Direct Mode" and use your iPod to access all your songlists. The interface charges your iPod while it's connected.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

Compatibility Note: If you have a newer iPod/iPhone device with a Lightning connector, then you will also need Apple's Lightning to 30-pin adapter. Be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

Features

Overview: This interface adapter (PA15-GM) connects a compatible iPod or iPhone directly to select GM car audio systems for optimal playback sound quality. This interface allows your iPod or iPhone to co-exist with GM navigation, CD-changer, XM radio, or DVD system; and controls your iPod or iPhone via both the in-dash radio and steering wheel controls. The adapter's on-board software translates commands from your GM radio's CD-changer controls or XM Band controls into commands for your connected iPod or iPhone. The USA Spec iPod-to-GM Interface (PA15-GM) offers the following features:

  • Directs the iPod's audio output to your GM's vehicle audio system for optimal sound quality playback
  • Supports your iPhone's audio streaming apps, such as Pandora, Livio, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM & more (in Direct mode only).
  • Controls the iPod via vehicle's radio and steering wheel controls (when applicable)
  • Charges the iPod's internal battery, and charging stops automatically half-hour after the iPod is paused; the iPod goes into sleep mode when charging stops

Vehicle Compatibility: Please consult the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to see if your vehicle is compatible.

iPod Compatibility: The PA15-GM is Made for iPod/iPhone compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features when connected to a compatible GM factory radio (as of 3/4/2015):

Notes:

  • *Requires Apple Lightning to 30-pin Adapter (sold separately).
  • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

iPod Text: Artist name and song title can be displayed on your factory radio using the GM radio's XM band.

None: Some GM radios will only allow disc number and track number to be displayed.

Operation Modes: The iPod interface adapter features the following modes of operation:

  • Direct Mode: In the Direct Mode, the LCD screen and the controls of your iPod or iPhone remain functional. In this mode, you can control your iPod or iPhone's music using the iPod or iPhone's click-wheel or touch-screen. You also have track up/down controls from the GM radio. No text will be displayed on the factory radio in this mode. In addition, Direct Mode allows the playing of streaming music applications, such as Pandora.com, and SIRIUS XM Online radio from your iPhone or iPod touch.
  • Folder Mode: Folder Mode allows you to access 4 folders - Playlist, Artist, Songs, and Album on your iPod or iPhone from the GM radio. Your iPod or iPhone's folders are accessed with the factory radio's preset buttons. You will be able to view artist and song title information on the LCD display of your factory radio. Your iPod and iPhone's screen and controls will be locked.
  • Playlist Mode: This mode allows you to access Playlists and Songs on your iPod or iPhone from the GM radio. When the iPod or iPhone is connected to the GM factory radio via the PA15-GM, the interface scans all available Playlists and folders on your iPod/iPhone and will automatically assign the first 4 Playlists in alphabetical order (they must be Playlists you created in iTunes). Your iPod and iPhone's screen and controls will be locked during connection. The factory headunit will not display artist name or song title information.

Note: To switch between Operation Modes, you will need to configure the dip switches (1-4) on the side of the interface.

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps & view song/artist information from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA15-GM, there is an auxiliary input (stereo RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, or game system. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected. To use the auxiliary input on the interface, dip switch #1 must be set to the "On" position.

Q
I've been using this for two years without any issues. As of a few days ago, it no longer sees the iPod, it only sees the two XM radio preview channels. Anyone know what may have happened?

I had the same problem after a year and a half, parts for this kit weren't serviceable so I ordered a new one and just swapped the iPod cable. That was the fix, and now I have spare parts in case the module goes bad haha.

Q
Can this work with a Samsung/Android phone?
david  May 06, 2015

A
The plug thats included with this set is for older apple products with the 30-pin connector. It doesnt have a micro usb plug, and you will not be able to control or charge any Android device from the head unit. But it does have an rca input, so you can do what I did and buy an auxiliary to rca cord, plug the two rca plugs into this device and the other end into your phone, and that will work like a regular aux input.
merle  May 08, 2015
A
you could plug the aux input function into the headphone plug on the phone. but you would have to control everything on the phone. there would not be any control from the radio. you could get a cheaper aux input adapter that would do the same thing.
brian  May 08, 2015
A
I don't think so. Works fine for up to 4th generation iPod, iPhone and iPad.
horace  May 07, 2015

The one that I bought works with iPhone, but there is an rca jack hookup on it also. But I wouldn't be able to control my iPhone with the steering wheel controls. Basically it would be like a stereo with an aux jack on it. Maybe they make one for androids?

Q
Do you need to have the satellite radio option for this to work. I have the standard radio no xm in my 2006 silverado?

Q
Does this allow you to answer phone calls through the stock head unit and speak through the factory microphone?
thomas  Mar 30, 2014
7 answers
A
No, it does not. This just allows you to listen to music or movies through your stereo and speakers.
scott  Mar 31, 2014
A
No, but I think there was a Bluetooth option that might work for that. You can leave it connected to the vehicle and use the phone with ear buds though.
aaron k  Mar 31, 2014
A
No, just music only from your music files, pandora, itunes radio etc. No phone calls. GPS will come thru speakers. Bought this for both my Nissan Pathfinder and my Chevy Avalanche, and love it alot.
john  Mar 31, 2014
A
No it won't.
stephen  Mar 31, 2014
A
Not that I could figure out. It doesn't seem to use the car's internal phone system at all. I usually talk through the iphone with the iphone's external speaker on so it can be hands free. This interface is pretty nice overall. It's a less expensive option compared to completely replacing the head unit with a bluetooth capable system.
david  Mar 31, 2014
A
This interface does not let you answer the calls and speak with the factory mic.
david l  Mar 31, 2014
A
No. This just allows you to play music from your iPod. If you are using an iPhone and a call comes in, it will stop playing the music, but you will have to use the phone to receive the call.

I was just curious if it works with the iPhone 5?

Yes it will work with iPhone 5/5S. Buy the 30 pin to Lightning adapter from APPLE, not a aftermarket one, and you will have no problems.
john  Mar 31, 2014
A
yes it will work for the iPhone 5 but you must buy the apple adapter they have available to switch it over to the newer charge port.

Thomas, The one I bought was for my daughter's 2006 Chevy Colorado. She has an iPhone 4S, so I can't say from experience that it will work with an iPhone 5, but their compatibility table says it will, as long as you have the adapter from the old style iPhone connector to the new Lightening connector. One word of caution - make sure you check compatibility on the Crutchfield site with your specific head unit (OEM or aftermarket, whatever you have). Some of the controls for the iPhone from the head unit will only work with certain stock radio models. Good luck - I love this adapter, and will be buying one for my son for Christmas (2003 Jeep). I also have one in my 2003 GMC Sierra with a JVC head unit. These things are the best!

Works with my iPhone 5
kris  Dec 11, 2013

It will if you buy a lightning connector
david l  Dec 11, 2013

I wish I had a answer but I only use my iPod with it...but I feel certain that a iPhone will work with it
scott l  Dec 11, 2013

Mine worked with an I 5 phone.
ed  Dec 11, 2013

I can not say that it works with iphone5 but I will say that it is finicky piece of equipment. I wanted to keep the factory look in my wife's Tahoe and went with this over a aftermarket radio...best bet is to go with a LCD screen with ipod/iphone controls enabled on the head unit....I and my wife are very disappointed in the USA Spec Ipod Interface for the GM and felt like we wasted out money.
stephen  Dec 11, 2013
A
Yes it does.
