Our take on the Logitech® Harmony® 900

Enjoy easy, full control of your whole system with this stylish remote

Get easy, intuitive control over just about any home theater system with Logitech's Harmony 900. This universal remote combines both IR (infrared) and RF (radio frequency) technology, so you can operate your components even if they're hidden out of sight. The remote's sharp-looking color touchscreen clearly displays common activities, like "watch TV" or "listen to music." When you select an activity, the remote instantly evaluates your system, conveniently turns on or off the appropriate components, and even selects the proper settings for you.

In-hand

Control your gear — even when it's in a cabinet or closet

RF extender

The Harmony 900 emits powerful RF signals for operating components you've placed out of sight. Just plug the included RF extender into a power outlet and stow it behind your hidden components. Then connect the two tiny IR "miniblasters" to the extender, and position them in front of the components. The extender picks up the RF signals sent by the remote and converts them back into IR signals which your devices can understand.

Sculpted buttons

Ergonomic design for easier navigation

The remote's contoured shape fits naturally in the palm of your hand for comfortable operation. Its sculpted, backlit controls are logically and neatly arranged, so you can find the button you're looking for by feel. Plus, the Harmony 900 features a set of red, blue, green, and yellow buttons that correspond to the colored buttons on most Blu-ray player remotes. Use the convenient docking station to charge the remote, and to keep it in an easy-to-find location.

Internet setup

Easy, web-based programming

Harmony's online wizard makes set up a snap. Just plug the remote into your computer with the provided USB cable, visit Harmony's website, and answer some simple questions about your system. That's it — the setup wizard automatically downloads the necessary codes and programs the remote for you. The site remembers your settings, too, so it's easy to reprogram the Harmony 900 later if you change or add components.

Features

Overview: The Harmony 900 Advanced Universal Remote provides simple, intuitive control of even the most elaborate entertainment system for anyone in the family. The remote setup is accomplished through Harmony's interactive web site. The Harmony 900 Remote can control up to 15 devices, including home automation devices such as light and climate controllers.

Setup: The Harmony Remote Activities are configured through unique Web Wizard tools on HarmonyRemote.com. Using Logitech's Smart State Database of over 225,000 electronic devices from over 5,000 manufacturers, you can easily customize the remote to your system. The database, together with IR learning, ensures support of all infrared-controlled devices made by any manufacturer, including Televisions, A/V Receivers, Cable/Satellite Boxes, VCRs, DVD Players, CD Players, Game Consoles, Mini Systems, Computers, and Home Automation devices.

Wireless RF Connection: The Harmony 900 provides wireless RF connection so there is no need to aim your remote directly at your components, allowing you to even control devices that you keep behind closed cabinet doors and walls (up to 100 feet away). The remotes wireless RF connection is easy to install. The Harmony 900 comes supplied with an IR blaster and two IR blaster extenders that are placed by components you want to control. The Harmony 900 remote sends RF signals to the IR blaster which then turns the remotes RF signals into IR commands that your devices can understand.

Full-Color Touch Screen: The Harmony 900's full-color touch screen gives you easy, one-touch access to any entertainment activity such as watching a DVD, watching TV, or listening to music.

Sculpted Backlit Buttons: The Harmony 900's sculpted backlit buttons allow you to easily operate the remote in the dark, while its ergonomic design allows the unit to fit comfortably in your hand.

One-Touch Operation: The Harmony 900 uses Activity Control to give you one-touch control of your entertainment system. You can use one of the touch-screen's Activity buttons to power on your TV, DVD player, A/V receiver, set all your inputs and even activate play without having to program time consuming macros. Once all of your equipment is "on", the buttons on the remote are also automatically configured for the appropriate operation.

Red/Blue/Green/Yellow Buttons: The remote includes the four "color" buttons (Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow) that correspond to the same buttons found on Blu-Ray player remote controls. These buttons are short cuts for selecting items on some Blu-Ray disc menus. They can also be used for BD-Java interactive operations.

System Off: One push of the off button turns off all the equipment in your system.

Help: If you have a problem completing an activity function, the help button will guide you through the fix using the interactive multi-color display. The remote will ask a series of questions, such as "Is the TV on?" or "Is the volume turned up?" in order to troubleshoot the problem and correct it.

Flash Memory: The settings are stored in a non-volatile flash memory so they will never be lost, even when the battery needs charging.

Lithium-Ion Battery/Recharging Docking Station: The Harmony 900 includes a removable rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, which provides up to a one-week charge under normal use. The remote comes with a docking station that keeps the remote fully charged. Because the docking station is horizontal, it allows the remote to be used while charging.

Harmony 900

Written By Scott, Chandler, AZ on Tuesday, January 31, 2012

The Harmony 900 is pricey, but it delivers. The initial setup is fairly easy depending on what you want your remote to do; it took me a little while (and some "tweeking") to get the remotes soft buttons to allow certain device functions that I used on the individual manufacturers remotes. The backlight function is a nice feature and pretty much activates by merely picking up the remote. The help menu is extremely convenient and comes in handy should one of the devices not operate properly.
Pros:
Very easy to use; perfect for the wife and kids!
Cons:
A bit pricey.

Nice!

Written By Converterjoe, Dothan, AL on Friday, January 06, 2012

Upgraded from one of the original web-based Harmonies, which by the way still works fine. But I wanted touch screen to select activities and more customization. This remote has it all. Almost went for the big-dog 1100 but I'm glad now that I settled on the 900. The RF to IR adapters included with the 900 are awesome but adding them to the 1100 puts you in at about $500 total! No more open cabinet doors and worrying about line of sight. Sweet! Setup was very straightforward for me because I'm already familiar with the Harmony software. Don't be intimidated if you're a newby, though. Step-by-step instructions are crystal clear and will have you up and running in no time. Great product. 2 weeks in and not a single issue. I've got the PS3 adapter as well and it's the same no-hassle, bug-free setup and operation. The PS3 adapter seems a little pricey to me but if you really want just one remote that does it all you kinda gotta have it. You won't be disappointed with this remote. Good job, Logitech.
Pros:
It works!

It works!

Written By BobT, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL on Wednesday, November 30, 2011

This is the first universal remote control that I have purchased that actually works. The set up process at first looks somewhat overwhelming. After gathering the model numbers and initiating the programming process, it became clear that the hard work has already been done. For example, when entering a make and model for a component, the screen provides an example of the format the model number should take. That provided comfort that the correct numbers were used. The most confusing aspect of the programming is the assignment of inputs and outputs. I made a couple of errors in the initial set up, but they were easily corrected.

This is a great product and I am preparing to purchase a second unit for our other television.
Pros:
I have multiple vintages of electronics associated with our television. After gathering the components model numbers, truly the hardest part of the process, I logged into the Logitech website and the hand held was programmed. Now I have one, not four remotes controlling our AV center. A single control allows basic on/off function, but also volume, channel, and other functions historically only controllable using the factory remote.
Cons:
After beginning the process of uploading the commands to the remote, a screen message stated that the DeskTop Messenger is not compatible with the Microsoft 2010 software. It would be nice to know compatibility issues up front. (searching the internet revealed no "fix"foor the issue.

Pretty Cool Remote

Written By pinch, NJ on Sunday, October 16, 2011

Bought to replace older version. Needed IR function as equipment is located in a closet downstairs. This is our third remote in 6 years. Original "custom" was the "bat wing" $1,200 Universal remote that I always had to call for service to make any changes. Then we switched to Harmony 800 series, which worked well, but it was time for a replacement due to normal wear and tear. New 900 series model was MUCH easier to install, especially the IR blaster. Old model, both the remote and the blaster had to be hooked up to the PC to sync. My PC is on the 2nd floor, the Audio closet in the basement... so lots of stairs last time. This one only the remote has to sync, the blaseter "just works" and did not have to hook up with little adhesive contacts to each unit. One blaster is working all equipment in the closet. The 900 is much easier to set up and has room for 24 icons. Downloaded icons / images for channels from www.iconharmony.com. Easy and made donation for freeware. Well worth it! Only "hickup" was that I could not just upgrade/transfer equipment settings from the old remote for equipment set up. (I probably missed a step in set up) Had to create new User ID and rebuild from scratch. Overall, a heack of a lot better that the "old days"! Enjoy! The price is a bargin for what you get and as always, Crutchfield service cannot be beat - Thanks!

Software Isn't compatible with Snow Leopard or Lion

Written By Phil, Santa Barbara, CA on Tuesday, August 09, 2011

I couldn't get the computer to recognize the remote on my IMac using Snow Leopard. Going to the Logitech site they acknowledge that the software isn't compatible with the latest two versions of Mac OS. They suggest a work around of running the computers in 32 bit mode which I tried with no luck. Finally, I loaded the software on an old Windows laptop which allowed me to set up the remote. This is my third Harmony remote, and as far as features, it does a great job. I'm upset that a company like Logitech doesn't provide software which is works with contemporary operating systems, and then to compound the situation there is nothing in the start up guide that highlights this issue. Shame on you Logitech!

Almost Perfect

Written By RogerP, Kentucky on Wednesday, July 06, 2011

I replaced a Logitech 880 with the 900 because my new DirecTV receiver had some commands that I preferred to be on hard keys rather than soft keys. The 900 is comfortable to hold but is a little long so using the touch screen is sometimes a two hand operation. I would also liked to have had a "list" button as a hard key in the middle of the remote since I used the recorded list of shows fairly frequently. The RF to IR works beautifully, although the rumor is that it has limited range, but in my home use that has never been an issue. The software is reasonably good and isn't terribly hard to use but it does take a good while to get everything configured perfectly. All in all, I think the 900 may be the best remote available for the more complex AV scenarios.
