About the Sonos Playbar

Tara W.

The sound bar for music lovers

This is no ordinary sound bar. The Sonos Playbar connects to your TV to play movies, TV shows, and sports with vibrant, room-filling sound. But, unlike most sound bars — and like all Sonos speakers — it offers wireless access to a world full of music. That includes Pandora®, Spotify®, Apple Music, thousands of internet radio stations, and more. Control the Playbar using your TV's remote control and using the free Sonos app for smartphones and tablets to stream digital music.

The technology behind the Sonos Playbar

The nine-speaker Playbar features three tweeters and six midrange speakers for cinematic sound without loading your room up with speakers. Built-in amplification and processing can handle Dolby® Digital and lossless audio formats. And the Playbar's automatic equalization self-adjusts to the program material to provide rich, seamless sound.

Three options for home theater sound

Clearer TV sound
All by itself, the Playbar acts as your front left, center channel, and front right home theater speakers. Connect it to your TV with an included optical digital cable for clean, clear sound from TV shows and movies.

Add bass
Pair a Sonos Sub with the Playbar to add bass impact to your home theater system. The Sub pairs wirelessly with the Playbar at the touch of a button. It's a simple way to enjoy rich, full sound.

Get surrounded
Add two Sonos One, One SL, or Play:5 speakers to the Playbar and Sub for a complete, wraparound movie theater experience in your living room. Like the Sub, the rear speakers connect wirelessly to the Playbar so you don't have to run speaker wire around your room.

Note: You can set up a home theater system with the Playbar , the Sub, and other Sonos speakers as surrounds, all without making a wired connection to your router. However, for challenging Wi-Fi® environments we recommend adding the optional Sonos Boost (not included) to make a stable wireless connection.

Sonos controllers

The Sonos app gives you easy wireless control

Control the Playbar volume and mute functions using your existing TV, cable, or universal remote. The free Sonos Controller App lets you control the Playbar with your smartphone or tablet and allows you to stream music to the Playbar even when your TV is off.

Spotify®, Apple Music™, SiriusXM, and more at your fingertips

The Sonos system works seamlessly with a host of streaming music services, including Pandora®, Spotify, Apple Music, Rhapsody®, TIDAL and more. You also have access to thousands of Internet radio stations from around the world through TuneIn Radio, and terrestrial radio stations through iHeartRadio. If you subscribe to SiriusXM Internet Radio, you can tune into all your favorite programming on any Sonos player in your system.

Play music stored on your iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch®

Sonos now gives you convenient wireless access to music and podcasts stored in the Music app of iOS devices, for playback throughout your entire Sonos system. This feature works on devices running iOS6 or later (see below for full list of compatible Apple devices). The system even lets you connect multiple Apple players at once. For instance, you can queue up songs from your iPhone to play in the kitchen while you cook, and your spouse can stream a podcast in the den at the same time.

Sonos PlayBar: Complement your flat-panel television with the Sonos PlayBar soundbar speaker for rich, room-filling HiFi sound. The Sonos PlayBar is simple to setup, control, and expand. It requires only two cable connections - a power cord & optical digital audio cable. The PlayBar supports playback of all sources connected to your TV; such as cable/satellite, Blu-ray/DVD player, video game system, etc. The Sonos PlayBar can also wirelessly stream music from your computer, as well as various online music services and Internet Radio. The PlayBar can even sync with other Sonos speakers wirelessly. The unit can be controlled from your TV's remote, or by your Apple iOS device or Android smartphone using the free Sonos App from iTunes or Google Play.

Note: The PlayBar works with all amplified and non-amplified Sonos products (sold separately).

Active 9-Speaker Design: The Sonos PlayBar soundbar speaker features a sophisticated 9-speaker design with six midrange drivers and three tweeters (the left & right tweeters are angled for a wider sound stage). Each speaker is driven by a perfectly matched Class D amplifier. The PlayBar acts as your front left, front right, and center-channel speaker.

Optical Digital Input (Dolby Digital/PCM): The Sonos PlayBar soundbar speaker connects to your television via its optical (toslink) digital input. The unit supports both Dolby Digital (5.1ch) and PCM (2ch) audio signals through its digital input. Make sure to turn your television's speakers off.

  • Dolby Digital: Your television's off-air and network movie apps can be delivered in Dolby Digital format to the PlayBar. The PlayBar will decode and utilize up to six discrete sound channels (five channels for center, right front, left front, right rear, and left rear; and 1 discrete Low-Frequency Effects (LFE) or subwoofer channel) available through the Dolby Digital format. Not compatible with Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS HD, or any other surround format (only supports Dolby Digital 2ch to 5.1ch).
  • Stereo/PCM: AV sources connected to your TV (such as Blu-ray, cable/satellite, video game) are delivered in Stereo/PCM format to the PlayBar. The PLAYBAR will decode the Stereo/PCM format into a left front and right front channels directly from the 2 channel Stereo provided and will decode a matrixed center, right rear, left rear, and subwoofer channel from the audio signal.
Note: The digital optical output terminals of most newer flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box).

Trueplay Tuning (for Apple iOS): The layout of a room, and where a speaker is placed, can have a significant impact on the sound that you hear. Trueplay, an auto-tune app within the Sonos App, uses the microphone in your Apple iOS 8.0+ device to measure how sound reflects off walls, furnishings and other surfaces in a room, and then fine tunes the Sonos PlayBar speaker to make sure it sounds great no matter where you've placed it. The Sonos PlayBar speaker already sounds fantastic, but Trueplay brings you even closer to how music should sound. Completing Trueplay tuning for a room takes approximately 3 minutes from start to finish.

Note: Trueplay is currently not compatible with Android.

Equalization (EQ): During the PlayBar setup process you will be guided through its audio calibration process. If desired, you can change the sound settings (bass, treble or loudness) for the Sonos PlayBar. Bass boosts lower frequencies, treble boosts higher frequencies, while loudness boosts both bass and treble to improve the sound at low volume.

Sound Options: The Sonos PlayBar offers various sound settings to customize your listening experience.

  • Speech Enhancements: The Speech Enhancement setting makes the TV dialog easier to hear.
  • Night Sound: The Night Sound setting adjusts the audio for night time viewing so you can reduce the volume and still experience proper balance and range. At lower volumes, quiet sounds are enhanced and the intensity of loud sounds is reduced.
  • Audio Delay (Lip Sync): You can increase or decrease the sound delay if the image on your TV and the sound from the PlayBar are not in sync.

TV Auto Play: When TV Auto Play is set to On, TV audio automatically plays through the PlayBar when you turn on your television. If music is playing when the TV is turned on, the music immediately stops and the PlayBar switches to TV audio.

Wireless 5.1ch Speaker System: Add a Sonos Sub and a pair of Sonos speakers for a wireless 5.1ch surround sound experience (sub and speakers sold separately). Now you don't have to run wires to a powered sub or rear speakers to enjoy true 5.1ch audio. In conjunction with the Sonos Boost, you can even use the Sonos Amp as a rear amplifier with separate rear speakers; in this configuration you will still need to run wire between the rear speakers and the Sonos Amp (Boost, Amp, and speakers sold separately).

Note: Each Sonos product in the 5.1ch speaker system must be utilizing the same Sonos S1 ("legacy") or S2 ("new") operating system and app.

Mounting Options: The PlayBar can sit above or beneath your flat-panel TV on a shelf, or mounted on a wall using optional wall mount bracket (616PBWLMNT, sold separately). When mounting the speaker below a television, allow 1" of clearance between the PlayBar and the TV. When mounting the speaker above a television, allow 2" of clearance between the PlayBar and the TV. Do not place the PlayBar in a cabinet or on a walled shelf. Both ends of the soundbar speaker should be at least 1' from a wall or other obstruction.

Network & Multiroom Audio

Sonos Wireless Multiroom Audio Eco-System: The PlayBar is part of the Sonos wireless multiroom audio eco-system consisting of a family of wireless network speakers, players, and amplifiers. Start with a single Sonos product and add more Sonos products over time. With multiple zones, you can play the same or different songs in different rooms of your home. Compatible distributed audio sources include internet radio, online music services, local network music libraries, as well as hardwired inputs. Up to 32 Sonos devices and 16 groups can be connected in one system. The Sonos Amp is compatible with the new Sonos S2 operating system (OS) and the older Sonos S1 operating system (OS).

  • Sonos S2 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos Five, ARC, Sub (Gen 3), and any Sonos products released after May 2020 will only be compatible with Sonos S2.
  • Sonos S2 and S1 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos Play:1, Play:3, Play:5 (Gen 2), Playbase, Playbar, Connect (Gen 2), Connect:Amp (Gen 2), One (Gen 1/2), One SL, Beam, Amp, Port, Boost, Move, and Sub (Gen 1/2) support both Sonos S2 and S1 operating systems.
  • Sonos S1 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos CR200 Controller, Zone Player, Bridge, Connect (Gen 1), Connect: Amp (Gen 1), and Play: 5 (Gen 1) will only support the older S1 operating system.

Notes:

  • If you have have both, older "legacy" Sonos products and newer Sonos products in your system, you have the option to create two separate eco-systems - one that will be controlled with the older Sonos S1 controller app and the other that will be controlled by the newer Sonos S2 controller app.
  • Click here for more information regarding Sonos "Legacy" S1 versus the new Sonos S2 Operating System and App.

Two Ways to Connect Wirelessly: In order to enjoy internet radio, online music services, your local network music libraries and Apple AirPlay 2, you'll need to connect the Sonos PlayBar to your home's wireless network router and ISP (internet service provider). Sonos brings your great sounding music wirelessly to any room in your house, without a big wiring project through WiFi or its SonosNet mesh network.

  • WiFi Wireless Network: Sonos can also operate over your home's existing WiFi network (802.11 b/g; 2.4GHz). Because you are connecting wirelessly to your home's existing WiFi network, you do not need to hardwire a Sonos Boost to your router/modem. The Sonos system's wireless range will be dependent on your home's existing WiFi network. Sonos products manufactured after March 2014 are loaded with the proper firmware and ready to go out of the box for WiFi connectivity. All Sonos products manufactured prior to that date will require a wired connection to facilitate a firmware upgrade and hereafter they will be able to work over WiFi.
  • SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network: Sonos can utilize its own SonosNet proprietary wireless mesh network technology to provides superior wireless range for whole-house coverage, ensure synchronous music playback, and avoid sources of wireless interference. The transmitting range of the Sonos wireless system is approximately 100', depending upon your home's layout. In addition to the Sonos Port, you will need a Sonos Boost (sold separately) connected to your network router/modem via a Ethernet cable.
Notes:
  • You cannot connect the Sonos system via both the SonosNet proprietary mesh network and WiFi; you will need to choose one. Sonos recommends using its proprietary SonosNet wireless mesh network over WiFi when applicable.
  • The Sonos proprietary mesh network will provide a more secure wireless connection with fewer interruptions for optimum performance.
  • WiFi is subject to greater interference from other WiFi and 2.4GHz devices on your network.
  • WiFi connectivity is not compatible with 5GHz (you will have to use the Sonos wireless mesh network in this case).

Ethernet Port (10/100 Mbps): In addition to its built-in SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network and WiFi, the Sonos PlayBar is also equipped with two Ethernet ports (10/100 Mbps). Use one to wire directly to your router to operate Sonos if WiFi is unstable, or use the Ethernet port to provide Internet accessibility to non-wireless devices if you're using a SonosNET Boost setup.

Optional Voice Control: You can control your Sonos system through any Alexa or Google Assistant enabled device (including the Sonos One, Sonos Beam, Amazon Echo, and Google Home - all sold separately). Specific control functions will vary by digital voice assistant.

  • Amazon Alexa: You can ask Alexa to play music on a specific Sonos device in an specific room of your home from these featured music services (Apple Music, Amazon Music, TuneIn, Pandora, iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, & Spotify). Using the Alexa app, you can group your Sonos products and your Alexa-enabled devices together. This makes it easier for Alexa to control your Sonos products based on which room or area they are in. You can pause, resume, and skip songs, as well as change the volume with all Sonos compatible online music services. Click here for more information regarding Amazon Alexa on Sonos.
  • Google Assistant: You can ask Google to play music on a specific Sonos device in an specific room of your home from these featured music services (Google Play, Spotify, YouTube Music, Pandora, Deezer, Tidal, TuneIn, and iHeartRadio). You can pause, resume, and skip songs, as well as change the volume with all Sonos compatible online music services. Click here for more information regarding Google Assistant on Sonos.
Notes:
  • The Sonos PlayBar does not have a built-in microphone for voice control. A separate Alexa or Google Assistant enabled device is required and sold separately for voice control.
  • You can only configure your Sonos system to work with one digital voice assisant; choose either Alexa or Google Assistant (you cannot use both). You will need to search and enable the Sonos skill from the Alexa or Google Home app on your mobile device or computer. Your Sonos equipment and Amazon Alexa-enabled devices must be on the same wireless network.
  • Sonos and Alexa or Google Assistant work together using a single Amazon or Google account. If you have a second Sonos system in another location, you'll need to use a second Amazon or Google account if you'd like to use Alexa. An Amazon or Google account can only be in use on one Sonos system at a time.

IR Sensor/Repeater: The Sonos PlayBar speaker does not come with a remote, but does offer a built-in IR sensor and IR repeater. You can program your TV's remote control to operate volume up/down of the system. If the PlayBar blocks your TV's IR sensor, the unit's IR repeater allows the remote signal to pass through the PlayBar to your TV.

Note: Many newer TVs are coming with RF remotes and don't offer IR functionality. In this case, you would not be able to program the soundbar and TV remote to work together.

Automatic Updates: The Sonos PlayBar supports free automatic software updates so you will always have the newest features and music services to enjoy. Simply register the One and Sonos will automatically notify you when software updates are available through the Sonos S2 Controller app. By simply pressing one button your system updates itself. The Sonos PlayBar must be connected to your home network and the internet for automatic software updates.

System Requirements

Internet Service Provider: You'll need a high-speed, wired internet service provider connection such as cable, fiber, or DSL. Wireless internet connections such as satellite, mobile hotspots, or 4G LTE routers can experience delays between the internet connection and Sonos and are not supported. Using these types of connections can cause music to not play, skip, or cut out completely.

Wireless Setup: Your network router must broadcast a 2.4GHz signal for Sonos products to connect to. If you have a dual band router (2.4GHz and 5GHz), do not disable the 2.4GHz signal. Wireless-N and Wireless-AC routers should work with Sonos as long as they are still broadcasting over B and G WiFi. Most Wireless-N and AC routers should do this unless manually configured not to.

  • The network must not contain enterprise access points that have been configured to require certificates or other forms of enterprise authentication. If you are using multiple access points, make sure they are all set to the same 2.4GHz wireless channel.
  • Networks using wireless range extenders are known to cause issues with Sonos systems that are configured in a wireless setup. If you need to extend your home WiFi to use Sonos in a wireless setup, we recommend using a WiFi mesh router to do so.
  • Sonos cannot connect to guest networks or networks that use a Port page to login.

Wired Setup Requirements: A Sonos system operating in a wired setup will require one of your Sonos products to remain connected to the router via Ethernet cable at all times. If your Sonos system is in a wired setup and you use a WiFi mesh router with multiple wireless nodes, we recommend wiring your Sonos product directly to the primary wired mesh node. Avoid wiring any Sonos products to the wireless mesh nodes. If you are on a corporate or advanced network, it must not block Spanning Tree Protocol (STP).

Note: Ethernet over Power devices (also known as HomePlugs or Powerline adaptors) are not supported by Sonos. While they may work for some systems, they tend to cause intermittent problems with Sonos. EoP adapters create an added delay between your network and Sonos. If the internet connection is too slow or the delay is too great, it can cause your music to skip or cut out completely or your players to drop off from the network.

Sonos S1 or S2 Controller App: Sonos offers a Sonos Controller app for Apple iOS 11.0+, Android OS 7.0+, Mac OSX 10.11+, and Windows 7+. The Sonos S2 is a new app and operating system (OS) that powers the next generation of products and experiences. In addition to new features, usability updates, and more personalization moving forward, Sonos S2 enables higher resolution audio technologies for music and home theater. Most Sonos products are compatible with S2. Some older Sonos "legacy" products will not support the advances of S2 due to their memory and processing power. The older Sonos "legacy" app is referred to as the Sonos S1 app.

  • Sonos Products That Support the Sonos S1 and S2 Controller App: Play:1, Play:3, Play:5 (Gen 2), Playbase, Playbar, Connect (Gen 2), Connect:Amp (Gen 2), One (Gen 1/2), One SL, Beam, Amp, Port, Boost, Move, Sub (Gen 1/2).
  • Sonos Products That Only Support The New S2 Contoller App: Five, ARC, Sub (Gen 3), and any Sonos products released after May 2020.
  • Sonos Products That Only Support The Old S1 Controller App: CR200 Controller, Zone Player, Bridge, Connect (Gen 1), Connect: Amp (Gen 1), Play: 5 (Gen 1).

Notes:

  • If you have have both, older "legacy" Sonos products and newer Sonos products, you have the option to create two separate eco-systems - one that will be controlled with the older Sonos S1 controller app and the other that will be controlled by the newer Sonos S2 controller app.
  • Click here for more information regarding Sonos "Legacy" S1 versus the new Sonos S2 Operating System and App.

Supported Audio Files: Supported audio files from online music services and local music libraries include MP3, WMA, AAC, OGG, FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, and WAV. Sonos can supports FLAC music files up to 16-bit/44.1kHz for "CD-quality" sound. All supported sample rates include 16kHz, 22.5kHz, 24.0kHz, 32.0kHz, 44.1kHz, and 48kHz. Internet Radio streams are supported only in WMA, MP3, and AAC.

The optical cord that came w playbar no longer stays in. I've had to tape it into place. Are there any optical cords that can solve this w/o tape? Plug in and stay in?

Sounds like the tab on the connector has somehow broken off. I have never had this problem. You should simply be able to order a replacement cable to solve the problem.

how fast dose internet speed need to be? the ad say high speed internet how fast?
ralph  Oct 24, 2019
3 answers
A
Hi Ralph, thank you for your question. High-speed internet connection via your high-speed DSL/Cable modem, or fiber-to-the-home broadband connection, is all that will be required for use of the Sonos Playbar. If you only have Satellite Internet access, you may experience playback issues due to fluctuation in download rates.

Yes, Video does run through the sound bar. Just the sound from TV through an optical cable. Hope that helps.

A
I hooked it to a Samsung 4K and it worked fine. I don't know why it wouldn't be compatible with an Apple. To be sure you might check with the retailer.
randy  Mar 13, 2019
A
Playbar only connects to an optical audio device, which apple tv does not support, but your TV might. Otherwise, you may want to check out the Sonos Beam, which has HDMI support
andrew  Mar 13, 2019
A
The Sonos Playbar does not support HDMI directly it does support optical sound which can easily be plugged into your TV.

Q
Does it switch to 2 channel mode when playing music? If not, does it just matrix a center signal?
jaime  Feb 18, 2018
2 answers
A
The PLAYBAR will decode the Stereo/PCM format into a left front and right front channels directly from the 2 channel Stereo provided and will decode a matrixed center, right rear, left rear, and subwoofer channel from the audio signal. So, no there is no "stereo mode" for playing music.

What am I missing, if anything, as far as sound quality going from a Marantz NR1508 A/V receiver and LCR speakers... to this SONOS Playbar with sources (BDP, TiVo,..) connected to LG OLED TV via HDMI and the digital audio output via optical to Playbar? Does it recognize/support all the latest hi-resolution audio formats; DTS HD, Dolby Digital/Atmos, TrueHD,..etc? I plan on eventually upgrading to SONOS 5.1 w/ SUB and Play 1 SAT's.

Will this work with my 2017 LG OLED55B7P TV via optical audio output - support multichannel/5.1 surround sound? I've read that some TV's can't send digital surround sound formats through the optical output.
darryl  Jul 11, 2017

A
I've heard that as well... I have a Vizio set and it was able to pass through the 5.1 audio signal. I chanced it and bought the playbar anyway without knowing because I really liked how it sounded. If you're really considering it, you might want to look up hdmi arc pass through boxes with optical out as a contingency in case it is not working the way you want.
reuben elijah c  Jul 11, 2017
A
Hi Darryl. I had the same concern when I bought my Sonos Playbar. Some TV do not send a digital Dolby 5.1 signal through digital optical out. I recommend that you check you TV specs. It should be clearly listed. I also recommend you check with Sonos. I have Sony and Samsung TV and it works perfect with Playbar. The LG OLED should support Digital Dolby out. However it's always good to verify it. Also, sometimes the set top box provided by the cable provider has stereo output as default that needs to be changed as well. Good Luck.

Will this work with my Wi-Fi, or do I have to connect it via ethernet to the DSL modem or Apple Airport Express, if it's the only SONOS speaker in the house? I plan on adding SUB and Play 1 SAT's later.

It will work on WiFi just fine, no needed hardwired connection. I use the PLAYBAR, SUB, and 2 PLAY 1s in my setup with no Ethernet hard wire connection, all WiFi.
ryan  Jul 11, 2017
A
It must be connected to the WiFi modem. Additional Sonos components connect wirelessly to the playbar.
lori  Jul 11, 2017
Q
Why does it require an Optical cable w/ TV? So wireless use via Wi-Fi is only for playing music from mobile devices, as well as transmitting HT audio to SONOS SUB and SAT (Play 1) for 3.1/5.1 surround sound?
darryl  Jul 10, 2017
3 answers
A
That is to connect a record player directly to the sound bar
betty  Jul 21, 2017
A
The only direct connection between your TV or DVD player (or other device that supports optical connection) is an optical toslink connection. To stream music, you must have a Sonos network in your home. The network will support all their other products - Play 1,3,5 etc. Then get the Sonos app and you can play music anywhere those speakers are located, directly from your mobile devices. Hope this helps -
richard  Jul 12, 2017
A
The optical cable is the most efficient means to transmit audio from the TV. You want the fastest connection to avoid audio lag when watching TV; you don't want every show looking as if it was dubbed.

Does the BRIDGE need to be located near the sound bar, or can it be located in he basement, where my Internet/router is located..??
freddie  Apr 29, 2017

Location of the bridge only matters if it causes you to lose connection. Test it in the basement and if it works there you are golden
harold  Apr 29, 2017

It can be located anywhere. It needs to plugged into your router and as long as your within reasonable Wi-Fi range it will be fine. Sonos no longer needs a bridge by the way. I still use mine because that is how it was originally set up. Good luck.

I am considering this to replace a large center channel. My question is this.. Can this be used as a center chanel with the rest of the theater system receiver and speakers? and also be able to be used with just the tv when 5.2 is not needed or wanted..? Thanks.
earl  Feb 26, 2017
3 answers
A
The play bar works really well. I like the fact that with sonos you can build your system and add on at any time. First I purchased the play bar then added the sub then the two rear surround speakers. The play bar works as three speakers ( center channel, front right and front left) when complete with the 5.1 system.
lindsay  Feb 28, 2017
A
This is not really a replacement for a center channel. It can replace a center channel and a left and right front speaker. It also can NOT be combined with the rest of our system. This is a powered sound bar that works and sounds amazing. I CAN, however, be used in a 5.1 set up but ONLY using other SONOS products for the subwoofer and the real channel speakers. Amazing system if used to its full capabilities.
walter  Feb 28, 2017
A
I don't think it is a 1:1 replacement of a center channel. It is more suitable for someone like me who had a high powered surround sound that was never turned up and wanted a simple system that worked with my other Sonos speakers. It will not compete with a 7.1 or high end 5.2 system

How do I know if my current Internet connection will support a Sonos system (PlayBar and 2 Play1s)?
ronald  Nov 24, 2016

As long as you have a broadband internet connection, it will support any configuration of Sonos speaker(s). You will need a Sonos Bridge, which acts as the Sonos speakers' connection to your router either wirelessly or through an ethernet connection.

A
HI. I am a Sonos user and love the product. As far as I know there is not any restrictions. You just need to purchase the sonos wireless box that hooks directly to your router and all your sonos products work wirelessly

My current setup is that everything comes to my AV receiver and from there HDMI to TV for video and the audio to wired speakers from the receiver. Can I connect the Soundbar to my receiver via an optical cable and get rid of the wired speakers? And I would also like to add 2 PLAY 1 in rear to get 3:1
chinmay  Mar 12, 2015

I'm planning to split the fiber optic audio signal from TV to a sound bar with Play 5's in the rear and component system with 6.1. The end result is a casual theatre sound for everyday and 6.1 for the big action movies. Either setup probably allows internet radio to flow through the soundbar and rear channel speakers when TV is off.

Thank you for your response George. I definitely don't want wired speakers. Looking at other question/answers and product information it seems that everyone is connecting the Playbar to the TV but I was wondering if it is possible to connect it to my AV receiver.

You don't need wired speakers with the playbar.I use the playbar as my main source of audio and have other Sonos wireless speakers as my secondary audio.

What placement options are supported or recommend for the sound bar? Should it always be positioned so the wider edge faces the room and the narrow edge faces up/down? Or can I lay it flat (in front of the tv) wide edge facing up and still get good sound? I want to lay this on my tv stand but am worried about the ~5" width blocking the bottom of my TV.

Hi Jim, You can place the sound bar an which way and get amazing sound. I have mine laying flat in front of my flat screen. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Keith
keith j  Dec 16, 2014
A
I have mine positioned in front of my TV, laying flat as you describe. The sound is still great. The bar has an IR sensor on the right side and a repeater in the rear that allows it to repeat commands from my remote to the TV's IR sensor. If they did not have this, I'm sure the TV's IR sensor would be blocked by the speaker. This setup is not perfect, though because I think it forces me to repeat a button press on the remote, occasionally. Still, it is not a deal breaker and I still love the speaker.

Q
I don't want to buy both the soundbar and a Play 5, but am curious about the fidelity of the soundbar for music when compared to the Play 5 (or other music-only speaker from Sonos). Can the soundbar provide decent music fidelity in a sizable room?
david  Dec 10, 2014
8 answers
A
Hi Dave I consider the Sonos soundbar to be great for music output. I have 4 Sonos Amps, the soundbar, and 2 play threes. I am pretty picky and I have never considered needing any enhanced sound in the room where the TV is. Two other thoughts... -buy the soundbar through Crutchfield and if you don't agree, Crutchfield's no-quibble return policy is there for you. -maybe silly, but with the soundbar you can play the TV sound through any other Sonos component. This is useful when there's sports events, etc and you can play teh sound throughout other rooms or outside.

A
I just use it for my big screen tv so I can't answer your question about music fidelity...sorry!
carol  Dec 13, 2014
A
Yes, the player sounds just as good if not better than a play 5. Now, 2 Play 5's in stereo pair will blow the playbar out of the water! But then again, 2 playbars in stereo pair will blow 2 Play 5's out of the water.

Hi, I have both the Sonos Playbar and the Play 5 and I have to confess that I very rarely use the Play 5. The Playbar is at least on par with the Play 5 so if you want just one unit, my suggestion is to go with the Playbar. If you can find the resources for the subwoofer I would strongly recommend that also - I makes a big difference.
jan s  Dec 11, 2014
A
Hi Dave. I have enjoyed my sound bar and play 5 for about a year now. I truly love both. I have the advantage of the sub woofer, and highly recommend that you purchase it with the sound bar. Both the play 5 and sound bar are fantastic, but as an audiophile (or at least I like to think I am) I found the addition of the sub unit essential. I had severe buyers remorse about the whole system until I opened the box and let the system fill my home with music. Though expensive, it is worth every penny. I have sold and installed High End home automation and music systems like Nuvo in many homes, I was stunned when one of my good customers showed me what he had put in his beach house and was more amazed when I found out what it cost vs. the 30 to 50k of other systems. I highly recommend Sonos for its seamless set up and expandability, but mostly the excellent customer service and top notch sound quality. Hope this helps, Happy Holidays!
anthony d  Dec 11, 2014

The Playbar can fill most rooms with quality sound. It has a very diffuse sound field. The Play5 has great sound but lacks any appreciable stereo separation. I would consider buying two PLAY3 for good stereo sound. Any Sonos option would be augmented with the addition of the Sub.
michael  Dec 11, 2014
A
I have a sound bar connected to a TV and use it that way the majority of the time. However, I have used it for music and the fidelity of the sound bar is very good. The room that I have it in is around 700 sq ft. I do not have any other speakers connected to the system and the sound bar is very loud and clear. I have other Sonos components in other rooms of the house and the components are played through Bose speakers. The sound bar music quality is as good as these other players. I do not have a Play 5. I do have the smaller Sonos speaker (a Play 1?). The sound bar produces a much better sound than the all in one sonos speaker.
steffanie  Dec 11, 2014
A
I own both the play 5 and sound bar. I have not compared them head to head but am very impressed with the fidelity of the sound bar. The sound bar and sub is a combination that can not be beat and leads to great video concerts. Sonos has recently upgraded the software for the sound bar leading even better tunes.

My sound bar is connected directly to the LG flat panel LED TV with an optical cable and it works well. The cable box (Comcast) remote controls the TV and the Sound bar volume. I like simple systems so I have not added any other components to that particular setup.

The Playbar connects to your TV's optical audio-out. If whatever you connect to your TV feeds sound to the audio-out will play on the Playbar. So it is more a question about the capability of your TV then the Playbar

There is an optical audio cable that needs to run from the play bar to the tv. So any audio you feed to the tv will play through the play bar.

You just want to make sure that the front area that says Sonos faces you. I don't really anticipate the sound being off if you had it flipped around. The location of your power outlet and how the cord runs from the bar to the outlet could be an aesthetic issue I guess.
jason  Oct 13, 2014

We bought one for our summer house in Maine and it's worked well for almost 2 years now. I'm fairly certain you could mount this any way you want and it would still function properly. It's really just a big speaker that's solidly built, so it could be wall mounted, ceiling mounted, hung vertically, hung horizontally etc. The input/output jack connection area is at one end on the back side.

Also, have you tried disconnecting your Playbar to see if the video quality returns to HD? Just trying to rule out whether this is some strange coincidence or not. Like Luis said, an optical connection from your TV to the Playbar shouldn't result in any signal loss from the cable box to TV.
jason  Jun 17, 2014
A
Could you elaborate on your connections? I assume you have cable box to TV via HDMI and then TV to Playbar via HDMI or Optical? In this configuration, I don't think the signal from cable box to TV should be affected by the connection from TV to Playbar.

robert  Feb 13, 2014

The answer is yes, you should be able to. Make sure your TV has digital optical output to connect it and then setup is pretty easy. Ideally you want to be able to then turn your TV speakers OFF and have the SONOS be the TV speaker when TV is on. I wasn't able to do that with my Samsung TV. Not a huge deal, but there are times when you're turning the volume up or down and your TV might say one level of volume but the SONOS is above or below that. Like I said, not a huge deal but fyi. Long answer for yes, you can control SONOS with your cable remote as the SONOS is technically your TV speaker and the cable remote is controlling the TV.

I'm interested in the Playbar but don't use Apple or Android products - are Sonos products useless to me?

Hi Daniel. I purchased the play bar and one of the speakers last year. The play bar itself will work with a compatible tv. However, it would not really be beneficial for you to purchase the speakers if you do not have music you want to play from a phone or tablet. If you just want better sound from a tv, then just get the play bar.

The Sonos system can be used with your PC or Mac. They have software for both. Additionally, once the Playbar is set up with your TV there is no need for the software unless making changes or adjustments, or if you plan to play music with it. Hope this helps.

Just a few comments from a Sonos newbie - - If you plan to add Play:1's or 3's to complete your system then I believe that you need to set it up through the Bridge component which means you need the iOS/Android. I assume that you have a wireless network. - If you only are using a Playbar then you may be able to set it up just using your television. Others would have to answer that issue. - Have you considered getting an inexpensive, perhaps used, iOS or Android device? I have the Playbar and two Play:3's and love the sound. I also have a Play:5 and Play:1 in other rooms. The ability to stream play lists and radio stations to any of the setups is great.

Sonos products are controlled by Apple or Android devices. If you don't have a device that will control your system, yes it would be useless to you. Sonos products do not come with their own remote.

The sound bar is still amazing without mobile devices. As long as you have wifi, sonos is a great product. One thing they don't mention is that you can link multiple speakers automatically to the sound bar to get surround sound. You still can control the speakers from any computer that is connected to the wifi and has the Sonos software. I have the soundbar and two Play 1's and am looking to get a Play 3.

I'm a big fan of Sonos products; they can handle many functions. My primary use of my PLAYBAR is simply as a soundbar for my Samsung LED TV, connected to each other via an optical cable. It can also be used it as a speaker for streaming content with an Apple or Android product, but when used simply as a standalone soundbar (for your television), I think it's great.

With the wireless setup and multi-room capability there is still a lot of benefit to the Sonos Platform. Assuming you have a PC, you can still control the system with out an apple or android mobile device. However, the convenience and capability of being able to control the system from from a mobile device is definitely a big part of the overall experience.

Do the stateside models come with an international power supply 110/220 volt or only 110? I am currently in the US Military in Italy so for now I would need a 220 power supply.

Hello again. SONOS replied... Hello Steve, All Sonos components (excl. the CONNECT:AMP, which features a hard-button to switch voltage) feature a power-supply which automatically switches to the correct voltage. 110-240v indeed means that you can use Sonos devices in Europe without any problem. Kind regards, Bjorn L (Employee) about 3 hours ago .

HI Tex 1st, Thanks for your service in the US military. My Playbar plug input is labeled "100v - 240v". However I don't see any place where you would tell it which voltage you are connecting to. I see no mention in the owner guide either. I forwarded the question to the SONOS support site.

I don't believe they come with 110/220 supply. How about one of those international power converter plugs?

We checked on the back of our Sonos. Looks like it just allows for 110. Call or email Sonos to see if you can get the other voltage supply.

Looking at the specs the Playbar is equipped with a universal power supply that can accept 100-240 V at 50-60 Hz. You might need an adapter to handle any differences between US and Italy with blade arrangement.

Q
I have heard some issues with the Sonos system (thinking of purchasing the Playbar with two Play 3 speakers) producing 5.1. It has something to do with the TV output maxing at 2.0. Is there a way around this to get a true 5.1 sound?
dan  Jan 17, 2014
6 answers
A
It depends on how the output for your TV is configured. Generally most modern TVs are capable of providing full Dolby 5.1 via the optical cable, however your TV may be configured to output PCM (2 channel) by default. In this case you will need to go into TV settings and update the audio output format. You can then go into the settings section of the Sonos app and see what type of input is being provided.

I would definitely be getting the sub with the bar and two play 3s for the rear speakers. I'll probably stay away from the front speaks for the moment due to $. I read on another site that an optical switch can be used to obtain the true 5.1, has anyone tried it yet?

The Sonos Playbar was my third attempt at purchasing this type of speaker for the TV (and the radio value as well.) I have never measure the output from the Samsung TV, so I can't specifically address your question. However, the Sonos system with the subwofer sounds great in my 20' x 20' living room.

Hey Dan B, I have purchased many speakers in my day and I am very impressed with the output and sound from this product. But remember this is still a center speaker...I would recommend the left and right channel speakers as well as the rear left and right wireless. If you like more bass of course get the sub..I'm telling you the sound is better than going to a theater! Coolest thing about this product is you can control it from your IPad like i do...I think it is worth the extra money...Purchase it from Crutchfield..NO shipping or tax and if you don't like it you can always send it back w in 30 days...That is as good as it gets! scott  Dec 16, 2013

robert  Dec 17, 2013

The Sonos Playbar is similar to all Sonos units. Software updates and Internet based music must have a hard-wired internet connection somewhere in the Sonos system in order for those signals to get to the Playbar. If you don't already have a Sonos system and have only the Playbar, then the Playbar itself has to have a wired connection to your router. You can also buy a Sonos bridge, which serves only as an Internet connection unit, for about $50. Once the bridge is plugged in to your router, all of your Sonos units, including the Playbar, will have wireless access to the Internet through the bridge. Once the Sonos system is up and going you can use your iPad wirelessly as a controller, but Sonos cannot access the Internet directly through your iPad.
j j  Dec 17, 2013
A
You need an internet connection if you wish to have an internet radio source like, Pandora or Spotify. Place and pug-in the sound bar. Then, connect the Sonos bridge to your wireless router via the provided ethernet cable, and then use the the controller app to find the sound bar. It's a quick, easy snap. It's very intuitive. The sound bar can be connected to your router directly, via an ethernet wire, but since they are including the Sonos bridge for free, you don't need it. Or, as stated, you sync it with your router wirelessly. The controller (there is no remote control) is accessed via an app on your computer, laptop, smart phone, or iPad. I have the controller loaded on all of them, so I can access the controller screen wherever I am or whatever I'm nearest to. By the way -- it sounds terrific! I have the sound bar linked with two Sonos 5s for surround sound, a Sonos 3 in the bedroom, and a Sonos 1 in the kitchen, too. It was EASY to install and link. Music and TV in less than 30 minutes from boxes to SOUND.
craig  Dec 16, 2013
A
My experience is that you need the bridge. You hook the bridge up to your internet router (wherever that may be in your house) and then the playbar communicates through that. When I tried it without the bridge it didn't work. You can also probably call the company to make sure there is no other way, but I don't think there is.

I have a complete whole house Sonos system already installed to play my Pandora and Spotify tunes. If I hook up a playbar, can I stream the tv through it, while playing music through the rest of the Sonos network? And when the tv is not on, can I use the playbar as an additional sound component for my music? Or, does it have to be one or the other?

I returned the sonosplay bar asI felt the sound was average for the cost. I believe you can use it the way you want and it will become part of your sonos system.

You can listen to the tv with the sound bar and still use other sonos speakers on the network. When the tv is not on, it is another sonos speaker. If you are listening to the tv and decide to turn on music through the soundbar, the tv sound shuts off for the music. Sound is great. Has nice 'nighttime' volume feature on control and another to bring out voices.

Hi Gary. I have a Sonos playbar and I have an answer to your question. You can use the Sonos playbar as an extra music component to your entire Sonos system to play your music. If you turn your TV on, your Sonos playbar will stop playing music automatically and converts to a TV sound bar, and the rest of your sonos speakers will continue to play music until you shut them off. However when you use the playbar as a TV sound bar, and shut the TV off, you have to "group" the playbar back in to play your music again (it doesnt do it automatically). Hope that helps Vinnie
vinnie  Dec 15, 2013
A
I also have a complete Sonos system, with a playbar. The answer to both your questions is yes. You just go to the "group" option in Sonos and select which componets you want to connect together and which you want to use independently at anyone time, like the TV. Hope this answers your question. JN BTW, after going through two other playbars for my TV, Sonos is the best, plus it can be part of house-wide audio system.
j n  Dec 15, 2013
A
Yes to both questions. If your Sonos system is set up to identify each room separately you can listen to music in other rooms while watching TV and listening via the soundbar. The soundbar should be connected to the optical audio out connection on your TV to get the TV audio but the soundbar just like the Connect 5, etc will pickup Pandora etc via the Sonos bridge linked to your computer. I have my apartment set up for Sonos network in every room including the soundbar and TV in the living room and it works great.

Yes but hook it to your tv of choice through its optical vice the add sonos component thru sonos setting Tv can be streamed while playing music because renenber it's has potentially 32 channels to work with. Lastly if the TV is not on the playbAr can be used as an additional sound component for your music Hope this helps and if you don't have the sonos sub I would recommend it to get the full understanding of what your equipment is capable of (1 playbAr 1 sub & 2 play 1 = 5.1 sound) ! Either way enjoy the wonderful world of sonos
emeka  Dec 15, 2013

Gary, Yes the playbar will become the speaker for the TV. In the setup you will infact keep the tv muted always. The other sonos components in your home can play other Music, while you watch tv. The playbar is just another sonos speaker when you are not using your tv and can stream music. Works really well and sounds great!
sunil  Dec 15, 2013

Yes and yes to your first two questions. And, when your TV is on and linked to your soundbar, you can extend TV sound to other selected units if you wish.
peter  Dec 15, 2013

Gary, I use the playbar exactly as you outlined in your question. Once the playbar is hooked up to your TV and network you can do any of the following: - listen to TV on the playbar and simultaneously listen to music on other sonos components - listen to TV on any sonos component on the network - listen to music on the playbar Mike
michael  Dec 15, 2013
A
Yes, the Soundbar and its associated surround speakers can be used as your TV speakers or as a regular Sonos player. The Soundbar can be used for TV when the other players are streaming music. When the TV is on, the Playbar will automatically choose that as the source first but it can be changed to other sources.
michael  Dec 15, 2013
A
The Playbar senses when audio is present from the TV and plays that source. If the TV is off then the Playbar acts as an additional Sonos component. If both are on then the TV has priority.
dennis j  Dec 15, 2013

I've had the playbar for a few months. It works as an independent Sonos component. Play TV on it, and different sources on other speakers. The playbar will play any source you put it on, whether the TV is on or off.

Yes to the TV - it is a separate "room" the PlayBar and works great - both as the TV speakers and when I use it to play music...obviously, it cannot do it at the same time - play music AND be the TV sound. EnjoY!

I have an Energy Power Bar Elite as well as the Sonos Sound Bar. Both are quite good as soundbars but I selected the Sonos bar for a larger room (20 x 25ft) that functions as a personal gym where I wanted flexibility to play the TV, some work-out music, or internet radio. The Sonos unit sounds great in the large room and has sufficient base response on its own so I have not added the subwoofer at this time, but I may do so later. In short, the flexibility of the Sonos unit to play multiple sources of music in a larger room without having to add extra electronics or run extra wires was a perfect solution for me and it works quite well.

I bought another Bluetooth soundbar before I decided to purchase sonos and the main reason for that is because of the wireless connection without Bluetooth. If you use your phone to control Bluetooth sound bar then if you get a call or step out if the range, the music will stop. Sonos doesn't have that issue. Quality is great especially if you get the subwoofer as well. I know the price is steep but if you plan to expand your stereo system at your house with Sonos for all rooms, there is nothing better in the market than Sonos.

Their 60 day guarantee is amazing and crucial when deciding to purchase a major piece of electronics. I have 3 SONOS sound bars in my home and I can honestly say that the sound quality is amazing. Great for movie and music playback. I would recommend this product and Crutchfield to any and everyone looking for a great piece of electronics. We have had the Sonos soundbar for 4 months now and it has exceeded my expectations. The sound is crisp and clear and I highly recommend also purchasing the Sonos sub as this will compliment the soundbar. I've had energy speakers and sub before but this system is far better in my opinion. Read the ratings online and most people are very content with their Sonos system. I can almost guarantee that you will add more Sonos systems to your collection because they are that good and Easy to set up.

You have to remember that this is more than just a soundbar. It's also a wireless music streaming device and integrates nicely with other Sonos gear. It may be pricier but I already have a sonos system in my house so to have it integrate seamlessly into my existing system.
