Each cable features two solid copper conductors to resist electrical and magnetic interference that can add brittleness to the sound. The center conductor is surrounded by a layer of air-filled PE insulation, which absorbs next to no energy and prevents signal loss and distortion. Triple shielding surrounds both conductors, eliminating almost all electronic noise, for the cleanest signal possible. Sidewinder cables feature precision gold-plated RCA connectors attached with AQ solder for a low-distortion connection. All solder tends to impede the signal, but AudioQuest's special solder blend has been optimized to provide a solid connection and excellent performance. That's because we have our own in-house Product Research team — they open the box, verify contents, check the owner's manual, and record dimensions, features and specs. We stay on top of new products and technologies to help people make informed choices. Features Conductors: Sidewinder has identical conductors (22 AWG) for the positive and ground connections. Underneath the 100% coverage foil shield is a bare conductor, exactly the same as the insulated center conductor. The conductor under the shield does double duty as a low distortion audio connection, and as the drain wire connecting the shield to ground. Solid conductors are the most important ingredient enabling Sidewinder's very clear sound Metal: Sidewinder's LGC (Long Grain Copper) allows a smoother and clearer sound than cables using regular OFHC (Oxygen Free High Conductivity) copper. The "HC" in OFHC means High Conductivity. OFHC is a general metal industry specification as to "loss," without any concern for distortion. LGC, with it's fewer oxides within the conducting material, less impurities and less grain boundaries, has better performance. Insulation: Sidewinder uses air filled FPE (Foamed Polyethylene) insulation on both conductors because air absorbs next to no energy, and Polyethylene is low-loss and has a benign distortion profile. Thanks to all the air in FPE, it cause much less of the out-of-focus effect common to other materials. Terminations: Precision gold-plate plugs are carefully attached with the very best solder. Through choice of flux and metallurgy, the audioquest solder has been optimized to make a low distortion connection. AQ solder does no have a high silver content because the more silver there is in solder, the more difficult it is to make a good connection. I wanted to see how it worked before splashing the money on the $1500 Squeezebox, so I connected it to my Musical Fidelity A5, driving JMLab Grande Utopia Be speakers. My speaker cables are Nordost Valhalla, my other interconnects are a mix of Valhalla and Valkyrja. The AQ Sidewinders have an amazingly pure sound with very warm mid & midbass, excellent highs, which surprised me - the beryllium tweeters on the Utopia series will bring any high frequency flaw to light instantly, but the Sidewinder isn't shrill or overly bright as many other cables in it's price range tend to be. The bass response is very accurate, with tight control and extension to 18hz. Soundstaging is also excellent, I can pinpoint the musicians on live recordings easily. I also tried the Sidewinder between my Tri-Vista 21 DAC and A5 instead of my usual Valhalla, with an Esoteric Platinum cd transport. Clearly, it's not nearly as good, but it still sounded smooth and warm and wasn't embarrassed by a $7500 cable...I was highly impressed. I honestly can't recommend the AQ Sidewinder highly enough. My 2m version cost only this much, and to actually fit well, albeit temporarily, into my system thoroughly impressed me. 2 out of 2 people found this helpful Was this review helpful?
