Our take on the Linksys® by Cisco Media Hub (NMH410)

by Tara W.

Store your family's entire collection of music, photos and videos in one central location, and access it from any room in your home. The Linksys by Cisco Media Hub makes it easy to keep your digital entertainment organized and backed up. Its compact size lets you store it just about anywhere. And the hub is DLNA-compatible, which means you can access files throughout your home on networked computers and other A/V gear, like a Linksys by Cisco wireless multi-room music system.

Ample storage and easy operation
Cisco's hub features 1 terabyte of built-in hard disk space, which gives most people plenty of room to store and back up all their files. Plus, it features an empty storage bay for adding an extra hard drive as your media collection grows. It's a snap to load your files, too. The included software automatically finds movies, music and photos on your networked computers and copies them to the Media Hub. Or upload files directly using the two USB ports or multi-card reader.

Access your entertainment collection at home and across the country
Have you ever been on vacation and wished you could share a particular song or picture with your friends or family? This Cisco hub lets you access your media collection using any computer with broadband Internet access. Whether you're traveling across the state or around the world, you'll be able to link up to your Media Hub at home. Play your favorite music in a hotel room or show home videos while you're visiting family. (Service included free for one year.)

Features

Overview: The NMH410 Media Hub contains a 1 TB (1000 GB) pre-installed Serial-ATA hard disk drive, with a second SATA hard drive bay available if you want to add more storage space. The Media Hub has an LCD screen with a navigation pad and memory card slots on the front panel. You can store thousands of songs or photos or hundreds of movies for access throughout your home with the LinkSys Wireless Home Audio system. Multi-stream capability lets you enjoy different media simultaneously: watch a movie while the kids listen to music, and your spouse browses photos.

Typical Uses: The Media Hub can be used for the following purposes:

  • Centralized Storage: You can copy all of your media files from all your computers and network devices throughout your home, so all your content is stored in one location for convenient access. Plus you have backup copies of your media files. You can access the files from anywhere in your home through your network, or with Remote Access Service (fee-based service--1 year included with product), you can access files remotely on the Internet.
  • Digital Media Sharing: The Media Hub automatically indexes the digital media files it stores, so you can use a web browser to access them through the Media Browser. The Media Browser also lets you access files on USB Storage Devices and Memory Cards connected to the Media Hub.
  • On-demand Backups: NTI Shadow is a backup tool installed with the Setup Wizard. A default backup job with an "On Demand" option is created. You can use the LCD screen on the front of the Media Hub to initiate a backup job. In addition to backing up files on your computer, you can also backup USB storage devices and Memory Cards.
  • Automatic Backup of Computers: During installation of NTI Shadow, the Setup Wizard also creates a default backup job, which runs automatically.

LCD Screen: The Media Hub has a 1.8" LCD screen with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels and 64,000 colors. The LCD can be used to check system status, configuration and media card backup, and import progress.

Memory Card Slots: Two memory card slots are provided on the front panel for direct import of photos, music, or video stored on the cards. One slot is for Secure Digital (SD) memory cards, as well as MultiMediaCards (MMC), extreme Digital cards (xD), and Memory Stick (MS). The other slot will accept CompactFlash (CF) cards.

USB Ports: Two USB ports are provided, one front and one back, for adding USB hard drives or USB flash drives to access your portable files. Both ports are USB 2.0 compatible.

Media Importer: The Media Importer is an import tool automatically installed by the Setup Wizard (on supplied CD-ROM). It is used to automatically find, copy, and update media files to the Media Hub. Files using the following file formats and extensions are imported:

  • Music: .mp3, .wma, .wav, .m4a, .aac, .lpcm, .ogg, .flac, ac3, .mpa, .aif
  • Photos: .jpg, .png, .tif, .bmp, .gif
  • Videos: .mpg, .mpeg, .mp2, .mp4, .avi, .wmv, .vob, .divx, .3gp, .vdr, .asf, .mpe, .dvr, .xvid, .m1v, .m4v

Ethernet Port: The 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet port connects to an Ethernet network device, such as a router or switch. Two LEDs on the port indicate the speed of the connection (unlit=10 Mbps, green=100 Mbps, orange=1000 Mbps), and activity on the network (amber).

Drive Bays: The NMH410 contains two drive bays on the top of the unit, protected by a cover. A 1 TB SATA hard disk drive is pre-installed in Drive Bay 1. The second bay is open and available for installing a second SATA hard disk for additional storage.

Minimum Requirements: The NMH410 Media Hub requires the following for setup and operation:

  • Windows XP or Vista with 32-bit Browser
  • CD-ROM drive
  • Internet Explorer 6 or Firefox 2 or higher
  • Adobe Flash Player 9 or higher
  • PC required for setup
  • 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet connection (network adapter, router, gateway, switch or hub port)
  • Broadband Internet Connection

Love It!

Written By Michael, Washington, DC on Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Got my Media Hub about a month ago and love it! It was EXTREMELY easy to set up and it found my pics, videos, and music files and saved to the 1TB hard drive during the setup process. I have linked my Itunes and other download engines directly to it and can load pictures right from my camera!

I have had my computer for many years and even though it had ample space at the time I bought it...that space just seems to "disappear" over time and wanted to continue to have the ability to access my music files, videos, and pictures without having to move them to an external drive that is not immediately accessible like this one.

Best of all! I can access these files over the internet so I can listen to any of my tunes at work, show friends and family pictures even if I don't have files with me, etc...

I highly recommend the LinkSys Media Hub
