Versatile connections for your system

The Audioengine D2 offers three ways to incorporate it into your home audio system:

  • Type B USB jack lets you feed one of the USB outputs of your computer into the D2's wireless transmitter, bypassing your computer's sound card for higher-quality sound with stored music files, online music services, and Internet radio stations. The D2's USB port can accept data rates up to 24-bit/96kHz, allowing you to transmit high-res music wirelessly.
  • Optical digital input gives you an alternate connection for your PC, or any other PCM optical digital audio source. Send a high-quality wireless signal to your stereo system, and take advantage of the D2's high-performance DAC for better sound.
  • Wireless USB-to-optical digital converter — If you already have a favorite DAC, the D2 can provide bit-perfect wireless USB-to-optical digital conversion, or serve as a wireless link between an optical digital audio source and a separate DAC with optical digital input.

A pair of high-quality gold-plated RCA outputs on the receiver/DAC lets you connect the D2 to your home audio system's amp, receiver, or a set of amplified speakers.

Features

Overview: The Audioengine D2 Wireless Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) lets you wirelessly stream music from your computer (PC or Mac via USB) or another digital source (via optical digital, 2-channel PCM only) to your stereo system. The D2 uses the 2.4 GHz range, scanning the spectrum to select clear channels. If it detects deteriorating RF conditions, the system will select a cleaner channel, and move without any drop in audio. In this way the D2 can co-exist with other LAN devices.

Additional Receivers: Two additional receivers (772D2R, sold separately) can be added to the system (for a total of three) and paired with one transmitter simultaneously.

Simple Installation: The D2 system consists of a wireless transmitter and receiver. Simply plug the D2's transmitter into your computer's USB port and it becomes a sound card that transmits your computer's audio wirelessly to the D2's receiver, which connects to your home receiver via a stereo RCA or optical digital connection. The included transmitter and receiver are paired at the factory.

Audio Outputs: The D2 receiver has analog and digital audio outputs:

  • Analog Output: stereo RCA outputs
  • Digital Output: optical digital output (Toslink)
Note: If connecting to a television set's optical output, please make sure that you are able to select PCM as the default optical out audio format from your television's Audio menu. This DAC is not compatible with multi-channel audio signals and will not work with televisions that do not output PCM.

Power Supply: DC power supplies are included for both the transmitter and receiver. The transmitter can also be powered by a 5 volt USB port.

We don't sell the transmitter by itself. You can purchase additional receivers but the transmitter is only sold bundled with a receiver.

Hi, with this transmitter, can I still use the Mac's volume control to adjust volume of the audio at the receiver? Or is the output fixed at 100% at the receiver, meaning a preamp is required for volume control? Thanks!

the D2 bypasses the sound card in the Mac, which a good thing as you get the much higher quality DAC in the D2 to process the sound. As such, you cannot use the volume on the Mac but must use the volume knob on the D2........however, if you are playing from something like itunes, which has a volume slider, you can control from there, but the volume knob on D2 is still the master. Hope this helps, and BTW, the D2 is awesome - great sound quality

Confused. If supported incoming sample rates on optical digital connection (from computer to D2 transmitter) are "up to 192kHz", but transmitter sends music over-the-air at only 24-bit/96kHz data rate, what use is the optical input to transmitter? Am I confused? Probably. So, how do I hook up to take advantage of 192kHz? (I can hear the difference on my system.) Thx

Yes, the wireless transmission is at 24/96 but an incoming signal with more information (optical 24/192) will still perform better than an incoming signal with less information (USB 24/96). The wireless convenience is definitely a trade-off but you will still benefit from the optical input and higher bitrate when available. Hope that helps!

You can use any optical or RCA output on the amplifier. I would only use the headphone output as a last resort, but it will also work.

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The USB input on the Audioengine D2 is only compatible with a computer. It will work with both PC and MAC but you cannot connect an iPod or iPhone directly into it unfortunately. I didn't try from a different floor but I did try from different room; one in the front of the house and one in the back of the house with 2 walls in-between. I was using apple TV to accomplish the same thing prior to this purchase but apple TV limits the size of the file and it doesn't have a DAC. This had a DAC but also limited the size of the file so the sound quality was not any better. My goal was to improve sound not just move it wirelessly from my computer in my office to my stereo in the family room. I ended up returning this. I now use a mac mini at the source in my family room and have it connected directly to a DAC then into my home stereo system and the sound is incredible. It cost more but worth it in the long run. I can also control the music from my iPad.

Yes. My computer is in one room with the Audioengine transmitter station hooked to it and the the receiver is in the living room about 100 feet away hooked into my stereo amplifier. I use it primarily to stream internet radio but also use it to play music from my iTunes library.Occasionally the transmission will turn off/on but I think it is related to the internet/radio transmission vs. the Audioengine, because I have never noticed it when playing iTunes . I am very happy with it's performance.
