About the Tascam DR-22WL

Ralph Graves

When you need an extra hand

Ever try to self-record while playing an instrument? You have to prop the recorder up someplace out of the way, turn it on, then rush back to your instrument — and do the reverse when you stop playing. With the Tascam DR-22WL, those days are over.

When you need an extra hand

Ever try to self-record while playing an instrument? You have to prop the recorder up someplace out of the way, turn it on, then rush back to your instrument — and do the reverse when you stop playing. With the Tascam DR-22WL, those days are over.

Tascam Dr-22WL

The Tascam DR-22WL uses built-in Wi-Fi to establish a wireless connection with your smartphone. With the free Tascam control app — available for both Apple® and Android™ — your smartphone or tablet becomes a remote for the recorder. The app not only lets you start and stop recording, but also adjust levels and EQ — right from your device. The recorder creates its own Wi-Fi connection, so it doesn't require a router. That means you can enjoy convenient smartphone control just about anywhere.

One more thing — the DR-22WL can simultaneously make a high-resolution recording and a smaller file-sized MP3. Wirelessly transfer the MP3 to your smartphone or tablet and upload to SoundCloud, Facebook, or other social media sites.

Wi-Fi controls

The DR-22WL features two built-in condenser microphones that pick up sound in all directions for flexible placement options. Capture recordings on microSD cards, either as space-saving MP3s or as high-resolution 24-bit/96kHz WAV files. Transfer files to your computer via USB for playback and editing, or via a Wi-Fi connection to your smartphone or tablet.

Record and share

The DR-22WL can simultaneously make a high-resolution recording and a smaller MP3 file that's easier to share via the Internet. Wirelessly transfer the MP3 to your smartphone or tablet and upload it to SoundCloud, Facebook, or other social media sites.

Versatile recording options

Use the recorder's Auto Level to automatically set the input levels based on the loudness of the incoming signal. Peak Reduction quickly lowers mic input levels during loud dynamic changes, like when the drummer comes on too strong. A limiter keeps sudden loud bursts of sound from distorting your recordings. The built in low-cut filter reduces low-frequency noise like wind if you're recording outdoors. And you can enable any combination of these features using the recorder's simple push-button controls and LCD screen or from the control app.

Playback and editing options

In addition to the DR-22WL's built-in speaker, you can monitor playback with a pair of headphones through the recorder's minijack output. During playback, you can add up to 99 markers to a recording, so you can easily highlight key moments from a speech or a rehearsal. And you can use the markers for some simple on-board editing, like separating a track into multiple parts or deleting extraneous material. Record an entire band performance and save a particular highlight as a short snippet for easy access. Or loop that section in the rehearsal studio so you can re-learn that brilliant improvised riff you just came up with.

Ultra-portable and tripod mountable

The DR-22WL is small enough to stick in a gig bag or backpack and keep with you all the time. Hold it in your hand, set it down on a table, or even connect a tripod to the threaded insert for added stability and placement options.

    Specifications

    General Features

Overview: The TASCAM DR-22WL is a hand-held portable stereo digital recorder that is designed for musicians. You can make high quality recordings using the WAV format (including Broadcast Wave Format compatible), or a large number of recordings in MP3. The recorder includes a slot for a microSD/SDHC/SDXC card, and includes a 4 GB card for hours of recording time. It has two built-in microphones, an External Mic/Line Input, a mono speaker, and a line/headphone output. The DR-22WL operates on two AA batteries (included).

Blackfin Processor: The DR-22WL is equipped with a Blackfin 16/32-bit embedded processor made by Analog Devices. The processor controls digital signal processing, enhances performance, and reduces power consumption.

Built-in Wi-Fi: The recorder has built-in Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11 b/g/n 2.4GHz) that allows you to control the device, transfer files, and stream audio to your smartphone or PC. Using the TASCAM DR Control app (available via free download for iOS and Android), you can start and stop recordings from across the room, search for and play back files, adjust recording levels, switch on the low-cut filter, and other functions. Audio from the recording can be streamed to your smartphone so you can check the recording using the headphone jack. Recorded tracks can be wirelessly transferred to your smartphone or laptop, and uploaded to SoundCloud for uploading to Facebook, Twitter, or other social media. Music files can also be emailed from the app. The app is available for iOS devices running iOS 6.0 and newer, or Android devices operating on Android 4.0.3 and up.

LCD Display: The DR-22WL features a 1.75" (diagonal), backlit, monochrome LCD (128 x 128 pixels) which indicates recording and playback information. The recorder will display the elapsed or remaining recording time in hours, minutes, and seconds.

Date and Time: The recorder features a built-in clock. If you have set the time and date, information as to when a sound file was recorded is stored automatically with that file.

Microphones: The unit features two high quality condenser microphones mounted on the top of the recorder. The mics are angled in XY position to give you ideal stereo imaging. The angle of the microphones cannot be adjusted. The mic capsules are able to withstand up to 120dB SPL without distortion, so you can record concerts and rehearsals without worrying about clipping.

Mic/Ext Input: Located along the right side is a stereo 3.5mm input for connecting an external mic or an external device. The built-in microphone, and the settings of left/right channels is disabled if an external microphone is connected. If the external microphone requires plug-in power, the DR-22WL can be set to do so.

Low Cut Filter: The device features a low-cut filter that can be engaged to reduce noise, such as wind noise, during recording. You can set the cut-off frequency at 40Hz, 80Hz, 120Hz, or 220Hz.

microSD Card Slot: The DR-22WL Digital Recorder features a slot for inserting a microSD card. The recorder is compatible with microSD cards from 64 MB to 2 GB, microSDHC cards from 4 GB to 32 GB, and microSDXC cards from 48GB to 128GB in size. A 4 GB memory card is included. The maximum recording time is as follows:

    File Format Recording Setting Capacity
    (hrs:mins)
    4 GB
    WAV
    (stereo)
    16-bit 44.1kHz 6:44
    24-bit 96kHz 2:04
    MP3
    (mono/stereo)
    44.1 kHz/48kHz 320 kbps 29:48

Formatting Memory Cards: Memory cards can be formatted in the unit to prepare them for use. Formatting will erase all of the data on the card.

USB: The DR-22WL has a Micro-B (High speed) USB port on the side for connecting the recorder to your computer for transferring files or for providing USB bus power. A short USB cable is provided with the unit. With the optional TASCAM PS-P515U AC adapter (which plugs into the USB port), you can operate the unit on ordinary household current. The DR-22WL is compatible with the following Operating Systems: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 (including 8.1) and Mac OS X 10.2 or later.

Headphone/Line Out Jack: The DR-22WL has a 3.5mm stereo jack for plugging in a pair of headphones, or for connecting to an external device. You can listen to files played back or monitor the recording as it is made.

Power Requirements: The recorder is powered by two "AA" batteries. You can use either alkaline (included) or Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) rechargeable batteries. Battery life for continuous operation is as follows:

Recording WAV, 44.1kHz/16-bit Alkaline: about 17.5 hours
    Ni-MH: about 13.5 hours
Playback WAV, 44.1kHz/16-bit Alkaline: about 19 hours
    Ni-MH: about 14.5 hours

Tripod Socket: The DR-22WL is equipped with a standard 1/4" tripod socket on the back so you can mount the recorder onto a tripod, if desired.

    Recording Features

Recording Format: The DR-22WL records audio files in WAV and MP3 formats. You can choose from the following recording options:

    • WAV: 44.1/48/96 kHz, 16/24-bit
    • MP3: 44.1/48 kHz, 32/64/96/128/192/256/320 kbps

Maximum File Sizes: You can set the maximum file size in the Menu. The choices include: 64 MB, 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, or 2 GB. If the maximum set file size is exceeded during recording, the unit will automatically continue recording in a new file. It cannot exceed a recording time of 24 hours.

Scene Dial: The DR-22WL has a rotary Scene Dial that sets the recorder to the optimum settings for the most common subjects. You can choose from the following:

    • Easy: The EZ mode is designed for beginners, and sets the auto level and 40Hz low-cut filter functions.
    • Loud: This setting is for recording loud events, such as rehearsals or concerts. The limiter is set to On, the 40Hz low-cut filter is enabled, and the trim level is set relatively low.
    • Music: The Music scene lets you record live acoustic music, classical concerts, and other unamplified performances. The 40Hz low-cut is set to On.
    • Instrument: The Instrument scene is ideal for recording individual instruments. The limiter is turned on to control levels.
    • Interview: This scene is designed for recording the voice, whether for interviews, lectures, voiceovers, or other spoken word events. The recording is set to Mono, the low-cut filter is set to 120Hz, and the levels are set to Auto.
    • Manual: All settings are made manually. This scene is for users with recording experience that want more detailed control.
    • Overdub/Airdub: The Overdubbing function lets songwriters assemble a song by recording over previous takes.
    • Play Function: The Play Function scene lets you adjust playback speed, which can be useful when transcribing texts or rehearsing music.

Recording Levels: After selecting the input (built-in or external), you can adjust the input levels to prevent recorded sounds from being distorted due to excessively high input signals, or from being inaudible due to excessively low input signals, compared to noise. There are three level adjustment functions:

    • Peak Reduction: The input volume is reduced automatically to an appropriate level when excessive high signals come in.
    • Automatic Level Control: The recording level is controlled automatically to increase or decrease the input level when the input signals are too small or too large. This mode is useful for recording at meetings. Manual adjustments to the recording level cannot be made.
    • Limiter: Engaging the limiter prevents distortion of sounds when excessive high input signals come in suddenly. This mode is suitable for live performances with large volume changes. You can adjust the level manually during recording.

File Names: Each time a file is recorded, a file name is assigned to the recording. The file name can be either a 6-character word or a 6-digit date (yymmdd format). You can set the word file name, while the date file name is automatically set using the unit's internal clock.

Marks: The DR-22WL lets you place an electric mark in a recording to identify specific points in the recording. Mark information is stored in the file with numbers between 01 and 99. Marks stored in a WAV file are BWF-compliant, and can be added automatically or manually. During playback, you can immediately move to marks in the currently selected file when paused.

Pre-Recording: Pre-recording enables you to start recording up to 2 seconds before you press the Record button. This enables you to avoid missing the exact moment a recordable event begins.

Self Timer: Like a camera, the recorder's self timer lets you start a recording after a set period of time. Self timers can be set to 5 seconds or 10 seconds.

    Edit and Playback Functions

Playing Back Files: The DR-22WL lets you view the contents of the Music Folder containing the audio files on the microSD card. You can play or erase selected audio files, organize them into folders, and add tracks to the playlist.

Divide: A recorded WAV file can be divided into two at a specified position. This allows you to edit out unwanted portions of a track by placing them in a separate track and deleting them.

Playback Functions: You can access various playback functions from the menu. You can playback a selected section of a track repeatedly (A-B Loop Playback), or change the tempo of music without changing the pitch in a range from 0.5 to 2.0 times normal speed in 0.1x increments (Variable Speed Audition, or VSA).

    Q
digital recorders with blue tooth capacity?
    rigoberto  May 10, 2016
    1 answer
    A
Digital voice recorders (like this Tascam model) have their own built-in microphones for recording the live sound in the vicinity of the recorder. The DR-22WL model specifically offers a 3.5mm input you can use to connect an external microphone so, if you wanted to add a third party Bluetooth microphone, you can connect the receiver to this input for recording to the internal memory. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5
