Tips for better home audio
- Get a wider frequency response — Frequency response indicates
the range of sound a speaker can reproduce. A large tower speaker may have a frequency
response of 30-25k Hz, meaning it will play very low bass on up to very high treble.
By comparison, a compact satellite speaker may have a frequency response of 70-20k
Hz, meaning it will play midrange and highs, but you'll need a subwoofer to deliver
bass. For full-range sound, make sure your speakers collectively cover all of the
frequencies humans can hear (about 20 Hz to 20k Hz).
- Use high-quality wire and connectors — Remember the "telephone"
game where kids whisper a message from one to the next? The larger the group and
the weaker each link in the chain, the more distorted the message is at the end.
Similarly, the wiring you use to connect your receiver and your speakers can make
a significant difference in sound quality. Better speaker wire and solid connections
help minimize distortion for top-notch sound.
- Get voice-matched speakers — Voice-matched speakers possess
a similar timbre or tonal quality, resulting in more seamless and convincing wraparound
sound in a home theater setup. Get voice-matched speakers by staying within a series
of speakers from a single manufacturer, or going with a pre-matched, multi-speaker
system.
- Place your speakers carefully — Setting up your speakers
at optimal locations, angles, and heights around your room can give you better sound.
You might need to wall-mount your speakers or position them on stands in order to
aim the sound for best performance.
